- I hope you don’t mind but I've taken a break this week from the normal landscape photography vlog format and put together a montage of drone footage I captured while travelling around Iceland.
Now if you’ve been watching my videos, you’ll know that I like to experiment with the content I create as well as use different music in the background.
I must confess, I have a fairly wide ranging taste in music and I don’t expect that this week’s music will be to everyone’s liking. It was a song I heard before I left on my Iceland trip and it was stuck in my head while I was travelling around. It was always my intention to edit together a series of footage like this to music as summary of the wonderful time I had exploring this incredible landscape and unique country.
The is called Expanding by Johan Borjesson.
It was heaps of fun going through the drone footage from the Magic Pro to put this together.

Thanks Darren, that particular footage of the Black Beach was one of my favourite shots. Even before I landed in Iceland I was planning to capture that perspective because I always found the contrast amazing from the videos I've seen from that location!

You've always had pretty good videos with good and well considered content, especially for what I believe is essentially a one man show, but in this video I believe you've taken huge leap up the ladder of professionalism. Whether its the travel or whatever the hell is it your drinking in these Nordic lands, you're certainly on to something...it's stunning in both content and progress. Wow you really have picked up drone flying quickly!! already looks professional. Certainly miles better than when you tried to do you "makeshift drone shot" on the beach in one of your older videos haha.
Haha I remember that 'makeshift' drone video, that was back when I was talking myself into getting one, I think the Mavic came out only a few months later...the real thing is a lot more epic and a lot more fun to fly! :)

Great selection Andrew. In Iceland at present but high winds are preventing me getting my mavic up very much. It is a beautiful country with landscape changing every few miles.

Just having a cup of tea during a study break when your video popped up. Needless to say I had to watch this before getting the nose back into my notes. A great compilation of all the wonderful vlogs you shared with us whilst in Iceland. The overhead shots of the waves washing up on the black sand looked like they were washing up on the edge of the world.

Gorgeous footage Andrew. I am thinking about a drone but still undecided between the Mavic and Spark.
Thanks John, it's a tricky decision as they are both great devices. It might come down to what you're hoping to use it for. If it's for fun and recreation, I'd go for the Spark. If you are wanting a little more quality in the footage, then the Mavic is the way to go!
Thanks Andrew. I have watched this video several times now. Absolutely stunning location and footage. Very inspiring. As for the drome I think i see it as a tool like my iphone. Something I can shoot casual images and video with so that i can share my experiences with friends. If it grows from there well and good if not at least I will have had fun.
+John Bentley cheers mate, the thing I like about both the Mavic and Spark is they are compact and light. Which means they are easier to carry and therefore you are more likely to take it with you to places you visit. I originally bought mine to improve the quality of the content of the videos but I ended up enjoying flying it more than I expected. What ever one you get, I'm sure you'll enjoy the experience!

Cheers Jeremy, really pleased you enjoyed this video mate! This is my first drone as well, I couldn't be happier with it! It's produces fantastic footage and it's a heap of fun to fly. I use DaVinci resolve to editing and colour grade all my footage, you should check it out, it's professional software by Black Magic but they provide a free version with all the features you need. All the best with your drone journey! 👍

Thanks Steve, that effect was synced manually, I think there are plugins but I haven't got into that side of things...yet! :) This Mavic Pro was my first drone as well and I couldn't be happier with it! It's produces fantastic footage and it's a heap of fun to fly. Hope your's bring you many 'flight hours' of enjoyment! 👍
What a lovely place Iceland is and you've really captured its essence Andrew. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. What were those flowers at 2.30 into the video, they look like lupins? I thought the music went pretty well with the scenery. Looking forward to some new footage and images from down under soon as I need warming up. It is cold and wet and miserable up here now! Lol All the very best.
Trevor Hughes, I believe you are correct on the lupins. They grow prolifically in patches all around the White Mountains of New Hampshire & central Vermont ( my home ) and in various colors as well here in the northern reaches of New England, USA...

I would encourage you to do this sort of thing again Andrew. You have told a visual story without speaking a word... The music was pretty cool too! Don't get me wrong, I am totally into the technical aspects of your landscape photography with your slow deliberate way of approaching a composition... The old saying goes: " You Can't Teach An Old Dog New Tricks ", well I can in all honesty say that that ain't true. I have picked up on loads of new ideas & techniques watching your vlogs... Keep them coming!

Were you using nd filters? What were the exposure value? And style settings?
There was a combination if different ND filters (Polar Pro) and exposure settings...I might do a video on that in the future. I used a custom style to desaturate the footage so I can easily colour grade it in post.

Andrew, I love watching your videos and find them really informative, but have to comment on the weird frame rate, which often makes the footage really jerky.
It's particularly noticeable today with this brilliant video, especially on the sequence of the lupins which looks to be running at about 12fps. Perhaps it's intentional, but have others have said, the footage is stunning so it seems a bit of a shame.
Thanks Stuart, this is something I have noticed as well, I feel it's also noticeable in a section where I'm panning 360 over a road with the mountains in the background. I record at a high frame rate (because I thought that would be best) however I edit the footage at 24fps, so the software drops frames, this is resulting in the jerky effect. I think I'll need to consider the frame rate I capture the footage in a little more carefully. Thanks for pointing it out and providing feedback and know you so to help me improve the content I create here and for that I am very grateful! :)
Hi Andrew. Shooting at a high frame rate shouldn't hurt, but if you're going to reduce the frame rate for RUclips then it's best to choose something that can be divided equally into the source frame rate (which is unlikely to be 24, although the Mavic Pro can record at 48fps). RUclips recommends frame rates up to 60fps, so maybe that makes things easier.
Also check to see how your software is set when reducing the frame rate, some basic settings will just drop frames and the end result will be jerky, whereas there is likely to be an interpolation option and that should produce better results too.
