Why has no one mentioned anything about The White Stripes’ Little Songs? If you take a look at the band’s discography, there’s a trend that they kept going throughout their entire six-album run.
It started with “Little People” on their self-titled debut.
Then “Little Bird” on De Stijl.
White Blood Cells gave us “Little Room.”
There was “Little Acorns” on Elephant.
“Little Ghost” on Get Behind Me Satan.
And finally “Little Cream Soda” on Icky Thump.
With how calculated Jack White is when it comes to presentation, there’s just no chance that this was a coincidence. Of course it was intentional. And knowing that they would continue this trend, would the group have put some extra thought into what these “little” songs would represent over the course of their career? Most of them are far from the Stripes’ greatest hits, so is there anything that makes these songs more significant? Well, let’s take a closer look at The White Stripes’ Little Songs.

Jack said in a interview when Icky Thump came out that Little Cream Soda was untitled and Meg noticed that they didn't have a "little" song title yet and had a minor freak out about it. Jack said they just called the song "Little Cream Soda" because of the word. Elsewhere he said he noticed the "little" thing and thought it was a subconscious accident, and the only song that has any real meaning with the word would be "Little Room."
Yeah. I enjoy this content too but for the above average Jack White fan this isn’t really new information, or accurate information for that matter.
Jack isn't exactly known for being entirely objectively truthful. Artistically truthful, yes.
Jack White: "I think they're onto us."
He calls up Meg and is like, “Look I know we’re divorced but somebody just found out about the little song thing.”
I bet Jack laughs at these videos saying, “dude I just wanted to write a song about a kid”
"i just wanted a good backstory for why meg is bad at drumming"
@@alonedownthere47 buuuuuut, she isn’t.
@@alonedownthere47 If the band had another drummer, or more, Meg would still be considered the best, she is perfect for the concept.
@@alonedownthere47 she don't got crazy chops, but she not bad
@@alonedownthere47 weak people cut down and insult others to elevate themselves.
Little Acorns didn’t have to go that hard
but it did
The first time I listened to it I was about to skip it cause I thought it was ridiculous, until I heard the music start, and was like "Hot damn, that's an mf bop"
Love that song so much I got some of the lyrics tattooed on me
Oogly Sproggs as you should lol
"Hot damn, that's an mf bop" 🤣
Middle 8: hmm I think I'll do another white stripes video
I'll talk about them any chance I get!
@@Middle8 you talking about the white stripes is great
@@Middle8 dont stop
Great idea
@@Middle8 Can you make a video about Nirvana? I've fallen in love with them again over quarantine and I think there is just so much to look into with Kurt's songwriting.
Also, it's always a good day when you upload, so thank you.
For me The White Stripes were one of the most creative bands ever, they were a duo, with a identity like the Ramones or AC/DC, their colors, formation, names, even the instruments! They revive the Delta Blues from legends like Son House, Robert Johnson and Blind Willie McTell, they play Garage, Punk, Country, Folk, Rock and Blues. All that in the early 2000's and become a mainstream band! That's something that with todays mainstream music seems almost impossible!
it's a shame that their feat is more possible than ever but seems so impossible
One of the mostest everest
“Tell me you don’t listen to modern music without saying you don’t listen to modern music”:
Big facts
One of the most creative? LMAO! They’re a retread of everything that came before them.
I won't ever be tired of listening the White Stripes or people talking about Meg and Jack!
I dont usually comment on youtube but gotdamn the quality of these videos are insane both the content and production are through the roof this is some good shit keep it up and once again GOTDAMN
LOOOL thanks!!
Little Room came on my playlist right as my bus pulled up to school the first day of freshmen year and now I listen to it at the beginnings and ends of each school year.
I used to listen to “we’re gonna be friends” on my walk to the first day of school every year.
Little acorns is so underappreciated
Mort Crim was a long time anchor on the local Detroit NBC affiliate. He was a legend. When he retired he started doing these Paul Harvey type segments like Little Acorns and syndicating them to radio stations. I remember hearing them on my way to work. Jack uses inspiration wherever he finds it.
I always loved that one. “Be like the squirrel…”
Its one of my favorites "be like the squirrel girl, be like the squirrel"
I always loved 'Little Ghost,' hits me in the bluegrass feels.
"LETS TAKE A CLOSER LOOK"
*paging Polyphonic
“Let’s take a little closer look.”
Hey you should talk about Jack White's solo career, specifically boarding house reach.
The White Stripes basically is his solo career, lol
I would like a video on this
@@cassanateli The White Stripes wouldn't be anything as we know it without both Jack and Meg, get outta here.
@@cassanateli nah man. The album I was talking about, boarding house reach, is VERY different from any white stripes material. Much more electronic/blues oriented than hard rock.
@@cassanateli maybe listen to the album first lol
Little Cream Soda is the ultimate Stripes jam. One of their top songs for me.
Agreed, thank god for that nephew.
Co-sign
Totally agree, one of my all time favorites, still listen to it at least once a week. It's actually God who has nothing left to say to Jack, even more epic :)
Fell in a love with a girl is my favourite song
One of their most underrated for sure
it's cool how Jack White's skeletal Garage Rock completely reverses when you hear stuff like Blunderbuss or Boarding House Reach when it's full of instrumentation
Woah, "there's nothing left for me to tell you" line just has made such a new and a big sense for me now (listened to this song like a million times but as a foreigner some thoughts are hard to grasp). thanks, man!
During this entire entertaining breakdown / interpretation the narrator never mentions Jack White's vocal aesthetic. It is absolutely everything, everything in regards to their immense success. Totally unique and existing in some weird divergent plane between baroque pop and art rock glam, it exudes a flamboyant style matching his visual persona and his melodic countenance. White could likely sing a label on a prescription bottle and make it sound interesting.
Did you know "In My Time Of Dying" is a cover of a Blind Willie Johnson song?
Killer production. Felt like I was watching some kind of television show.
I can't get enough of any related to Jack White videos
Little Acorns is one of my favorites of theirs. It blew my little mind when I heard it as a teenager. Made me realize that extremely fuzzed our guitars are good
Creative constraints are necessary in a world where art can be anything. The blank page is larger and more daunting than ever before.
Bruh middle 8 literally just lets me hear new music and talks about it, I love it
Damn. I've been a White Stripes fan for over 15 years and never registered the significance of "nothing left for me to tell you". Thanks for such a well thought out video! I can tell you're a big fan from how well you incorporated their design values into the video's editing.
This video explains why I love the White Stripes better than I ever could. As a designer my mantra has always been ‘less is more’ and that idea can apply to anything, even epic rock music.
PLEASE make as many white stripes content as possible, hell i'll write them myself if it's what it takes. the band has next to no recognition online, we NEED more
Love how you used Cooper BLACK as the font for the titles in this vid.
same font that OFWGKTA used back in the 2008-2012 period
D.P. Argyle it looks like Cooper Black but it’s Goudy Heavyface. Same font the Stripes used on their Elephant album.
@@Middle8 Huh! Ok then - learn something new everyday. Great vid as always!
Dude are you Sherlock Holmes?? What a pick up haha
Beach boys font lmao
I only got to see them once live, my god they were epic, last show of the tour, Jacks voice was just about shot, the guy never held back one bit, every bit of energy was on that stage that night. The way they dressed the roadies like mobsters, the enthusiasm to how they approached just another night in a place where maybe not everyone got it. Jack gets so much credit for his playing and its deserved, but his strong point was always song writing imo, sometimes its more then a catchy riff or beat, sometimes its just that.
The white stripes deserve more people knowing who they are and not just the 3-5 songs that blew up for them. They were one of the only people to keep rock going through the rough years of it when no one was interested in this style of it. Today we have royal blood and greta van fleet who are now the ones holding it together. But I have much respect for Jack White and the White Stripes 👏
Little room has been my anthem for years 🤙🏼
little room is also interesting because when jack was a child he removed all furniture in his little room to keep more room for instruments and slept on the floor in the middle of it
Great video. Followed your podcast on spotify right away. Can't wait to hear more
Great video! Huge Stripes fan here, and I've definitely been aware of the little songs. Thanks for expounding on this little topic.
Dude you are so underrated... you deserve 1mil subs +
Incredible video man! So informative about the white stripes creative process. Really eye opening. Well done!
jack white is in my top 3 favorite guitarists.
I'm so glad you made this video. I hope Jack hears it. I've always wondered how this came about.
Wonder how it came about? Who know what jack was thinking with these tracks, it's all assumption. And I doubt Jack looked at his audience as little birds, may as was say sheep right there, and that's really not in his character.
Thoroughly enjoy your essays. Thank you.
I've been thinking about this for years. Such a good video!
the voice over at the start of Little Acorn sounds like Dennis Prager
Mort Crim
It definitely sounds like Dennis prager even though it is mort crim
@@wolfhaddad7677 oh man…..I could have gone with out that quite correct observation. 😂
Little acorns is probs on of my fav tracks on Elephant tbh
I could watch White Stripes dissection videos all day. So much good stuff
Love these videos man keep it up
I love the white stripes... I feel like a fool for never realising or noticing the thread of “little songs” in their albums. After all this time still leaning new stuff fills me with joy. Thanks for the video. De Stijl is my favourite by the way
Such a good video thank u for making it!
I love your videos. Great editing and story telling
Love your work man!! Keep it up!
Hey, I love your stuff, man. Keep up the great work. I wanted to suggest maybe making a video on Nujabes. Criminally underrated artist.
Really good video on my favourite band. Brilliant
De Stijl is their masterpiece
dude whenever i heard the little songs i just thought they were random and funny but when u explained little room which is the one i’ve heard most out of all of them u blew my mind thank u sm
their debut album for me is gold, I love all the tracks and play some of them in my electric guitar. mostly power chords and some catchy little licks very straight forward and raw...
These videos are so good. I love the editing style.
Great job! Your Work is appreciated
Cant believe i JUST found this channel!!! Liked, subscribed.... Now time to binge. *grabs popcorn*
Little Acorns and Little Cream Soda are 🔥🔥🔥
love the video, if you do another white stripes vid maybe you could dive into all their amazing covers they recorded and played live
This is quality. Edited extremely well. Great use of motion graphics.
"Their songs are so easy, even the White Stripes can play them!"
Seems like that was the point.
I was convinced that Apple Blossom had "little" in the title, too.
Nah, just in the lyrics
Man I would love to have a drink with you and talk about music. The White Stripes is my favorite band ever and I haven't noticed this. (even though Little Cream Soda and Little Acorns are two of my favorite songs ever) Also your editing skills are god tier. Great job!
I love Little Cream Soda so much! When the song changes from the heavy distorted rift back to the smooth one, it’s just sooo goood! Little Cream Soda and Catch Hell’s Blues, mmmmmmm, so good! If you want an additional person to get a drink with ya, I am here 😂
I've always wondered about the "little" songs motif in their music as a kid and even made a playlist on it after seeing that they organized themselves together in the "songs" section of my iPod because of the alphabetization.
I don't know if this video answered the question but it is by far the best video I've seen about The White Stripes.
Haha there’s no question to answer. It’s just a click-baity video title/topic that meanders without giving much accurate information. I’m just here to let everyone know to be skeptical of any “facts” this channel presents to us. I don’t know nearly as much about some of the other artists covered here but I’d be willing to bet the hardcore fans are able to point out the inaccuracies in those videos as well.
@@ImLazarusMusic I mean I don't think this vid was clickbaity, it's a pretty niche topic to delve into that I was happy to hear someone besides myself talk about.
@@JakeHGuy I guess it’s just people’s different perception of information being presented. Since there wasn’t anything new to me in this video, and some of the passing information mentioned was inaccurate it felt like clickbait to me. Not to mention the fact that the title says “why have the white stripes never talked about this” and several people have mentioned in the comments that Jack has actually talked directly about it. It wouldn’t have even taken that much research to find out. So, the lack of research about the topic is also what makes me feel like it’s a hollow viewing experience.
@@ImLazarusMusic Oh gotcha yeah I can get that.
Great job on this video!
You for sure have some of the highest quality videos I've ever seen
Your videos are fantastic. Bravo!
I love more than half of the "little" songs and somehow I never noticed these parallels
Simply a great video!
I loved this video, thanks so much
Definitely the best presented videos on RUclips
Been a stripes fan for years, never heard about their "little songs"! Thank you!!!
Little Room's simplicity reminds me of Jack's favourite song, "Grinnin' in your face" by Son House. There's only clapping and singing, the inspiration is obvious
Really good video - subscribed!
Loved this episode!!!!!❤
Great video! Thanks! One comment though, their debut was mostly recorded at Ghetto Recorders, not in Jack White's home.
I’m a huge fan of everything jack does. This video was amazing. Just subbed 🙂
this was amazing, I SO want to make a little album now or at least that little playlist hehe
The theremin on Little People used to give me lsd flashbacks. It was awesome
Nice analysis. What a great band they were.
Great little analysis there.
Another amazing middle 8 video
Thank you!
great video, thanks!
omg man thank you for noticing this!
just hit play and already love it
Great job!
Wow this made me feel emotional. I never even imagined the Little songs were connected. The White Stripes were amazing
Love your videos!
i’ve always thought about this, thank you
I'd love to see a similar video about their "Blues" songs.
Jack White mentioned in an interview that it's an "inside joke" to have a song with "Little" in the title for each record.
This was simply excellent.
First middle 8 video I see. Fucking A. Immediate subscription right here.
REQUEST!!! (I love this video btw ur amazing) you should do a video on Phoebe Bridgers :D you could talk about her lyrics or her many collaborations or something ❤️
sounds kind of like it started as a coincidence and they just went with it til the end. Kind of like how Blink 182's albums used to be released acording to the alphabet
Never noticed that about Blink-182 discography 🤯
And all Kings of Leon album titles having only 5 syllables.
ah blink-182. buddah, cheshire cat, dude ranch, enema of the state, ftake off your pants and jacket, guntitled, hneighbourhoods, iCalifornia, jNine
I remember talking about that with friends back in the day when Enema came out. But yeah as far as white Stripes it basically is a coincidence, Jack has even said so himself. This channel just didn’t research the topic enough.
Growing up the Early 2000's with a parent loving the white stripes. The child touch makes so much sense and throughout life I always come back to hear bits of my childhood. It all comes together and makes my respect for the band go that much farther for connecting child mindset with my own childhood. Appreciate it Mr. White
Try making a playlist and listening to all theese songs in chronological order, it actually flows really nicely.
Love the graphics and prrsentation
Acorns is definitely my favorite Stripes tune
Great video. The only one I think I ever really understood was Little Room. I agree, the simplicity made them great.
Great vid
Love your videos
Little Acorns is one of my favourite songs on the album and my main alias online is Acorn, which the origin of has nothing to do with the song but makes the song for me even better.
