Nicolas Harnoncourt used to do wonderfully eccentric performances very much like this. He did a recording of the Four Seasons that you either loved or hated....I personally loved it. This interpretation is very much like that and I love it. Music should be alive and fun. We should always be striving to find that which moves us when we perform any music. Bravo to Mr Sato.

And, the last of Vivaldi's sonnets:
    Allegro non molto
To tremble from cold in the icy snow,
    In the harsh breath of a horrid wind;
To run, stamping one's feet every moment,
Our teeth chattering in the extreme cold
    Largo
Before the fire to pass peaceful,
Contented days while the rain outside pours down.
    Allegro
We tread the icy path slowly and cautiously,
for fear of tripping and falling.
Then turn abruptly, slip, crash on the ground and,
rising, hasten on across the ice lest it cracks up.
We feel the chill north winds course through the home
despite the locked and bolted doors...
    this is winter, which nonetheless
    brings its own delights.

Wow I really like the dramatic effects that are presented to depict the winter chills that have arrived (maybe people coughing in the first minute is a winter effect LOL). The tempo in the first movement is also faster than usual but the group executes it skillfully. The solist's interpretation is also very interesting with legato playing that seems to be telling the story of life in the middle of winter in Venice. In the second movement, I could imagine Vivaldi describing him enjoying a bonfire in his house while watching the snow falling outside. Winter also evokes a sweet sentimentality. In the last movement, the tranquility of winter is interwoven with the bone-piercing wind from the ocean.

Totally insane, unbalanced emotionally, megalomaniac performance - however, that is what tempest is about, isn't it? Moreover - it did force the audience to get out of its conventional mind, didn't it? and even more than that: it forced the music to get outside from the concert-hall, to nature itself, and that is all music like this is about, isn't it? So all of you and Sato especially - Bravissimi!!!

This is one of my absolute favorite versions besides Voices of Music version but they’re both incredible and I’m a modern violist who uses baroque techniques including baroque tuning. I just love the baroque period and I’ve played on a baroque viola and it’s an amazing experience and I enjoyed it and I use a baroque bow from time to time if I’m performing Bach or another baroque composer. Edit: As a modern violist I think everyone should not forget about the baroque period and should try to utilize more baroque techniques and try to use baroque tuning as well.
