McGinest was the man on the 96 team, and it's not surprising Belichick was smart enough to keep him around as long as he could with that phenomenal LB rotation for the early championship teams.

@@dumisatonyjohnson8145 My recall is that he was an OLB who pretty much had his run of the field before guys like Izzo, Vrabel, and Colvin came along to make his job easier. Generally stayed in the box behind the line, but timed his pass rushes very well, and did not get fooled very often at all.

I remember when that SI issue with John Hannah on the cover came out, when I was just a kid. It was the first time I saw an offensive lineman get that much praise, at a time when Payton, Dorsett, Swann, Staubach, and Bradshaw were the obvious stars. Even with the Patriots being up and down during his career, Hannah was always considered the best guard in the NFL, and probably the best O-lineman until Anthony Munoz came up from USC. It would not be unfair to say that Hannah was considered by many to have been the greatest player in franchise history before the 1990's.
Not quite understanding Curtis Martin's omission, unless he's being punished for defecting to the enemy. I cannot say enough good things about Martin, and I'm so glad the Hall of Fame didn't take long to induct him. Also, back in the day, Sam "Bam" Cunningham, Randall's older brother, was a terrific RB, but didn't produce for enough seasons to make this list. Prior to 2001, he probably would have.

-most career quarterback sacks in NFL playoff history (at both OLB & DE)

Personally Troy Brown's always been my favorite player on this franchise.
First of all he's just multitalented and a great addition to an already-loaded roster, very difficult for other teams to plan for.
But to me he epitomizes Bill Belichick's coaching beautifully--if The Sith Lord has a player, he will know everything about how that player can play and how he can help the team win. So he'll try everything, and more often than not he'll be right, the player can execute what needs to be done.

@@gabrieldodds9081 I don't necessarily think that's the case. There were people I remember distinctly in that area who felt Bledsoe could've done just as well and felt he was better in the early aughts. I think the problem for him was obviously Brady's legend just kept growing. But also its easy to see in hindsight objectively, as a non-NE fan, that Bledsoe was replaced not necessarily due to skill level but due to being a gunslinger mentality. He nearly got taken out on the same hit that gave Brady the job in the first place in the playoffs. He still kept making those decisions in games that you he and I knew were not right and he'd still try to make Farve blush (a tall task indeed). Bledsoe was a really good QB for them who never knew how hard to work to become an all time great, and had the awful luck to be followed by arguably the greatest to ever play.

The patriots of the 80s were really underrated by history. We like to think that they didn’t wash on shore until the Brady bellichick era but they had a lot of talent.
If they had kept Mike Haynes I think they have more playoff success. I don’t think he would’ve helped them beat the 85 bears but that was mostly a stylistic mismatch. The 46 demolished the run and didn’t give Grogan enough time to throw to Morgan, and the defense wasn’t as good against the run.

Just like they say “ppl forget the older players when making these lists” they are also living in the past too much. It’s so hard bc there are sooooo many great patriots, but this list needs to be made up of players who won more and some of the old players should be gone

I think Irving fryer was going to meet someone for a little something something he didn't seem like the kind of guy that planned ahead a lot. If you can't buy your coke before the game enough to get you through then you really shouldn't be in the league brother

@Harry Engel Ah ok then. Their history is basically useless until Parcells came. The only two things that happened were A. A fan ran onto the field and won them the game and B. They were AWFUL in the early 90s.

@Harry Engel Well, yes, but what do people remember about the 1985 SB. The Bears. They also think of how badly they were overwhelmed. Tbh, I wouldn't count a lot of the AFL stuff, since in a combined schedule a lot of those teams (early on, especially) would have been middle of the road in the NFL. And in 1976, it really isn't remembered that they were there. All people remember is that AFC Title. SideBar - I think they lose the SB that year but beat Pittsburgh since PITT had all their RBs injured. Pittsburgh would have won the SB if they were healthy (and no this isn't Mark Madden's burner account).

@Fries "a couple of champ games"??? I believe it was 1. 1963 AFL Champ game vs Chargers. They lost. Next was 1985 season SB vs Bears, they lost. Then 96 season SB vs Packers, they lost. That was it until 2001 season. They should have won it all in 1976.

Gronk overrated imo. So much of him is dependent on Tom Brady. I think Matt Light or Logan Mankins deserved some talk. Richard Seymour absolutely needs to be on this list. And Mike Vrabel over Troy Brown tbh.

Martin surprised me the most. If Welker makes the 4th quarter catch in SB 46, he might be on here. It's amazing that you'd have to explain to someone now that Brady was even more locked in with Welker than he was with Edelman. I'm a Giants fan, but Bruschi was my favorite Pat. He would have fit perfectly with Taylor, Banks, and Carson back in the day with us.

This list was made early 2016. If they updated it, Edelman would make it. Personally, I’d put Seymour in Nelson’s spot. Wilfork is probably my favorite Patriot ever. He belongs on that list and IMHO, in the HOF.

Another NFL Films Tom Brady spooge-squeeze. Gotta make sure to stroke it regularly. Ugh.
I'd much prefer the Pats with Grogan or Chunk-it Plunkett at QB, because they weren't so bloody obnoxious.
