That picture of supersons appearing as Sal described the destruction Bendis wrought when he took over Superman hurts my very soul
Radical Raddish yeah that broke my heart
tradgey
Sal: You know who fits it? You! *points to camera*
Me: Yay!
Sal: You sucker.
Me: Oh.
I'd rather be a headcanon editor than having the carpet pulled out from under me every 10 years. Ask your significant other what they think.
"Marvel will do anything as long as it makes them money. DC will do anything as long as it satisfies the ego of 3 people working on editorial level. Against better judgment, ON BOTH SIDES". - Sal Crivelli
It's because of lines as the one above that this show is the most quotable comic book internet shows out there hahahaha
He should be writing some big comics, he's actually a writer.
@@WannabeWryter yes
This is going to be good. The episode, not the actual comic.
Treating Bendis as an ominously menacing comic book villain is actually quite appropriate. He usually ends up ruining these characters' lives in his runs...
Just ask Carol Danvers.
And Hawkeye, and Scarlet Witch, and Moonstone, and Rocket Raccoon…
"You can't even keep to the continuity in your own book."
Yes, Ben. That's how Brian Michael Bendis operates
Bendis doesn't care.
Not even bothering to read the stuff he wrote.
Sal's idea for Rogul Zaar being a nerd at Lobo's high school is perfect. I would read it in a heartbeat.
Goddamit, Ben, not a full minute in and you already got me...
Sal: "Bendis came..."
Ben: "... all over the pages..."
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏👏👏👏
"it's funny how much you care."
summed up brilliantly
Yup, spot on, the mentality of most current writers at the big 2
*No one, literally no one, absolutely no one:*
*Lois:* "hElLo, pUliTzEr!"
I think you mean HeLlO PoOlItZeR!!!
Ah shit, here we go again
ah shit here we go again indeed
There are no words to describe how much I hate Bendis' Superman. And this, ladies and gentlemen, was the catalyst for it. Bendis' complete disregard for continuity and complete misunderstanding of the appeal of Jonathan Kent is agonizing for me, as a fan of Tomasi's Superman and Dan Jurgens' Action Comics. Thank you for covering this.
I 100% agree with you & whats funny & kind of sad is that 10 or 12 years ago (right after Infinite Crisis or Final Crisis) if Bendis came to work the Superman then, all the decisions he would have made would have been awesome & the execution would have been stellar too. It was around the early 2010's that Bendis's creative spark died
@@oatmat Superman was my first time reading Bendis. And, after three issues from each series (especially after someone said the word "autistic" as an insult in Action 1002) I had to drop it. The free pass that he's gotten to completely ruin everything that Tomasi, Gleason, and Jurgens set in place is infuriating. The Man of Steel, Superman, and Action are the only comics that I've ever hated. And, coming from me, that's saying a lot. Now I understand how Spider-Man fans have felt for the past ten years.
What also kills me, besides what has been said before, is the fact that it is clear that Bendis' big vision for the book is super uninspired. The way he uses Jor-El is just how Batman has been using Talia and Ras since Damien was introduced. Rogol Zaar pretty much is just a dumber retread of both Lobo and Doomsday. And, let's not forget, the use of retcon and attempted erasure of the marriage to Lois is exactly the type of stuff people hated from Marvel that he was pretty much ingrained with during his time there (although, the problems with marriage there seemed more to be at Quesada's feet, but whatever, retcon still was a Bendis era staple of Marvel writing).
Well. He didn't have a COMPLETE disregard for continuity, as Sal pointed out. But yeah, Bendis' run seems pretty awful.
Facts well said bro
Fun Fact: I made a D&D character named Rogal Zaar and made him the most arrogant and strongest character ever. In his mind, he’s already won because overdevelopment!
Oh man. Buckle up everyone Sal's gonna take us on a Bendis ride!
I want to get off Mr Bendis' wild ride
I just jumped off the Bendis ride 😂😂
@@marcushamner5994 Dude, you okay? That ride got too wild.
Because Bendis is coming
Ethan wins. "He looks like a character from Duck Tales."
I feel like that’s an insult to ducktales more then anything.
Nuclear family Superman is the best Superman.
I miss kid Jon.
Once Bendis is off the book someone will fix it and I can resume reading Superman... hopefully.
@@Syntherus just bring back Manhattan or Mxyzptlk and have them de-age Jon or have Flash or time travel to stop this stupid shit
@@seanrutherford728 I'll even take Damian stabbing him and John falling into a Lazarus Pit.
@@WannabeWryter I'll take it being Brainiac in disguise and the real Jon never came back (Seeing as Future state Jon locks Metropolis in a bottle like Kandor.....How suspiciously Brainiac-ish of him

Also he does what in Future State?
I know this episode has been out for awhile but this is quite literally an hour of Sal going "Bendis didnt read that" and "But thats over now" and it's amazing
Every time I rewatch an episode of Back Issues I always wish that I could click the Like button again.
my too
we can only hope that the supernal algorithm of the RUclips Gods takes note
Yessssss I can't wait for Sal to tear into this book, and my third shift has officially become way more entertaining thanks to you guys; Keep up the amazing work guys.
Caca poo poo. Dan Jurgens was also kicked off his fantastic Superman action comics book.
The Rebirth Action and Superman books complemented each other so well. Jurgens created Jon Kent and Tomasi/Gleason honored that while also expanding on it. Then Bendis comes along and not only throws all them off their books but also throws out everything they did with Jon and the Superman family. Yes I'm still bitter lol.
@@Sulufy Hey sulufy. Arslan here. Hope you are doing well.
There is a question I like to ask.
Do you think that DC editors will reboot Superman/Action comics again after Bendis leave the series?
Ah the introduction of everyone’s favorite Superman villain. What’s his name again? Roogly zoogly?
OrionJacobson lol yup indeed
😂😂
Your profile picture is awesome! I love X-Men the Animated Series! Excelsior!@
The tragedy of what Bendis did to Tomasi and Gleason's Superman. So upsetting.
And also not forget the hard work of Dan Jurgen on Action comics series and his introduction of Jonathan Kent.
@@arslanbaig1943Then Taylor came in.
13:13 the Rogol Zarr character design discussion always kills me
Bendis was marvels super spy. A+ double agent
The idea of Bendis actually being brought to DC by a double agent higher up, with a mission from Marvel, to "break" all Super books would make the most sense considering how atrocious was what Bendis did (and he still continues to write on DC...)
Just think: in an alternate timeline where Tom King learned his lesson about Superman much earlier than he actually did, and Bendis learned his about Batman much earlier than he did, instead of getting two awful runs and a couple of decent mini-series, we got Bendis on Batman and King on Superman.
If anyone finds a wormhole to that universe, let me know.
Oh no it’s bendis superman plus sal *grap popcorn* dis gon bee GUD!
How is it possible to character assassinate Jor El, a guy who didn't have any kind of character to assassinate in the first place? My hats off to you, Bendis.
"Bendis is coming" isn't as bad as CW's "Superman is coming in Supergirl"
That wasn’t real
@@Dusty_Byes it was.
@@Dusty_Bin my head canon it is...now
Yay! I finally get to know what happens in this story and continue to not read bendis' superman
Damn the continuous roasting of Roggle Zarr is so fucking fun.
"You can't phantom zone all your problems away." That is going on a shirt.
Seriously though, was anyone excited when Bendis was announced to be taking over Superman? I screamed in protest when he took over and cried when he ruined Jonathan Kent. Bendis is 80% collassal miss, 10% convoluted but okay story, 10% great story.
@@thrawncaedusl717 I agree that his work on Jessica Jones, a (fantastic) Bendis original character, and DareDevil were great. After all, crime and noir stories seem to be his specialty. Many of his earlier team stories were also great and led into amazing events like Avengers disassembled. Nevertheless, the vast majority of his post-2011 works, that don't involve the aforementioned, are inconsistent but usually bad. He'd occasionally write a half-decent story that starts out great, especially ones consisting of teenagers, but they always peaked in the middle only to crash in a glorious flame of suck by the end. The rest of his stories just came across as one-note or unreadable, especially when he tries to mitagate the issue through wordy banter-style dialogue. Honestly, it felt like he spent the latter half of this decade riding on the coattails of Mike's Morales and the Ultimate Spider stories.
The one Bendis story that everyone seems to think is great is his Daredevil run. But all the same complaints apply equally there. I guess the difference is people didn't really like Bob Gale's run on Daredevil, but he spent a lot of time in six issues to rebuild Daredevil's supporting cast after Kevin Smith's run. He had supporting characters from his law firm, a good potential love interest, and an emphasis that his secret identity was now safe. Bendis literally threw all of it away but threw in a reference to the story to show that he had some vague idea that it happened.
I just love how Superman loves to smile because even in darkest times like these lol he can still crack a smile I love it
After two great years of Superman during Rebirth this began the downfall
The first dc book by bendis. This is gonna be great.............
Man I really wish Geoff a Johns has a chance to tell his story
Tom King: BENDIS’D!!!
I was actually buying Superman and keeping up with it. Since Bendis took over, I refuse to buy anything until Bendis is off the book and Jon is back to his appropriate age.
My friend, the damage is done.
Wow. Bendis really dropped so many balls on this one. Super Sons was a great and fresh idea. And people liked it.
The hell happened to the Bendis who wrote Ultimate Spider-Man? That was a revisionist take while also keeping the heart of the characters and connecting to readers on an emotional level.
A wee bit late, but he became the corporate guy
1:01:23 Oh wow, I had no idea the higher ups were against what Tomasi was doing. Them allowing Bendis to destroy it all makes much more sense now. Anyone know if Tomasi has talked about this in an interview or something or does this info come from other unamed sources at DC unhappy with what Bendis did?
It's Dido, he doesn't like the idea of characters getting older, that's why Nightwing went away for a while and we hardly see Robin now. Because it ages batman and it's the same reason why they ruined superman
I have talked to tomasi personally myself and I asked him how he felt like when they age up Jon and he was upset about to the point he didn't want to talk about it
more like Rem Lazar amirite? holy shit this episode was so hilarious
Rem Lazar came in Bendis at nigh-I mean came to.....
This is my favourite episode of Back Issues. It’s the one I come back to when I’m feeling bored or down. It’s great. Thank you Sal and the rest of ComicPOP for this.
Dan DiDio always screws up Geoff Jhons' plans. He wanted nightwing dead back in infinite crisis, flashpoint wa supposed to be a fun time travel book and he turned into an event and now with rebirth he messed up everything jhons built up. First, by killing the superman family dinamic, then aging up Jon and finally killing Wally West character, which was also part of doomsday clock. Man, he was mentioned in the last issue and then, 2 issues of heroes in crisis, he became a killer.
Wait...so Conner wasn't the one who was supposed to die during his final fight with SB Prime?
@@vincentblanco2032 nightwing was supposed to die technically before infinite crisis started when bludhaven gets bombed
Ah, yes. The six issue mini series that made me quit Superman. This ought to be fun...
Almost made me quit, but I've been picking up a couple issues, none for Action yet tho.
_she's not afraid to wear a cape_ *INDOORS* _without Superpowers!_
HAHAHAHA 🤣🤣🤣
I was not ready... Bendis coming to superman is still an open wound...
love the retcon one edit: make Rogol Zar Lobos best friend from high school who was killed in battle with Lobo. Upon hearing about his survival he returns to earth only to find the biggest nerd in school has stolen his identity.
Congrats you wrote a better origin for rogal zar
I keep trying to google Rogol Zaar years later to finally fully find out what his deal was and all his wikis are still barebones as hell. Even obsessive comic book nerds couldn't give a shit about this character. Amazing.
Back Issues on the Superman story that made me drop the book after 2 straight years. Sweeeet. Can't wait to see how Sal does this!
"He looks like a Ducktales character!" XD
I was hoping for a Superman story but not like this. NOT. LIKE. THIS. D:
Great job on this sal. So much face palm in this episode. Nj always represents.
Alternative Title: Superman is ruined by Bendis
Edit: Oh my God it's worse than I thought.
Another one would be "DC's One More Day", which turned into Weeks and Months, and most likely Years.
This is one of my favorite shows on You Tube.
Thank you for all the great episodes.
I am excited for the next one.
I got back into Superman comics with Rebirth Action Comics. It was the first time I ever picked up a monthly book as it was coming out. I loved that run. And then, Bendis
“Did you just edit me?”
To which I immediately thought “Don’t edit me, bro!”
How is it possible that Back Issues feel more refreshing as time goes on? Excellent job with incredibly insightful commentary. You guys are the best!
Someone high up at WB/DC apparently just hates the idea of Superman being a happy family man. We supposedly almost got an animated series based on the Tomasi run but WB turned it down.
Tim Chindles yup and it looked tons of fun and awesome
They did WHAT ??!
I thought that was what Superman and Lois? It's a tv show on the CW that sees Superman and Lois with 2 kids in Smallville....WB didn't turn that down.....
Rogul Zar is like the Pitt with a haircut and A manicure lol
Didnt marvel tweet a parody of the "Bendis is Coming" ads. With a sad Ultimate Peter Parker and it said "Bendis is gone, left, or leaving"
It would be better if Miles (who imo was better written by the next writer) and peter and tony stark (for civil war 2) cheering.
What peeves me about them completely retconning out the Superman/Wonder Woman relationship, is that you could easily just say instead that the new canon is "Supes and Wondy were a thing for like a year but it didn't pan out" and you wouldn't need to ignore entire runs for it to work.
Or heck, judt give action to new 52 supes and superman to fsmily man superman. Have it both ways. I was infuristed when nre 52 supes blew up and never bought rebirth.
@@ianmckee4726 Rebirth's got some gud shit tho.
I love this show, seriously, and their comments are spot on. Bendis is a good writer, for a stand-alone story, NEVER for continuity books.
Can we do MR MIRACLE by Tom king
Rogolzaar looks like he's wearing 3D glasses on his motorcycle
I love coming back to these and hear you guys predict what’s going on in comics rn. Like Lois being editor.
After hearing that Bendis knows about the show... I want Bendis on the show when they rip apart one of his stories.
Funny enough, I met Peter j tomasi last year at a con. asked him about bendis and he was not pleased lol
The story is horrible, but they reactions and commentary are amazing. I haven’t laughed so hard in months.
This was my first time reading anything Bendis so I've been giving him a chance. I'd say I do enjoy his AC run far better than his Superman. To inconsistent for me, some things don't make sense and we still don't know shit about Rogol Zaar. Been considering maybe dropping his Superman run at least. Jurgens and Tomasi/Gleason's run was perfect, imo. DC should had kept them on till the series was declining or until they're ready to move on themselves.
14:08 Blathering Blatherskites! What's Rogol Zaar doing in Duckberg?!?
This is a Magnum Opus episode... One of my favorites. Whenever I suggest this show to ppl, this is the episode I send them. The first ten minutes alone is worth the price of admission and it only gets better. I don't know why but every time I hear Sal forced for say Rogol Zaar's name 😂🤣😂🤣... Magnum Opus of Back Issues ppl... Magnum Opus.
“20 seconds ago” a new record for me I guess. Looking forward to hearing about this one !
And DC before you even knew what Bendis was gonna do,
You printed it,
You packaged it,
You slapped it on a comic and now you're selling, you're selling it, and well...there you go.
Im rewatching this now and it reignited my Bendis Superman hate. Thanks a lot Bendis!
…But also i love a lot of your work
I am a fan of Bendis and I do collect his Action Comics run but I definitely empathize with everyone who misses the Tomasi run. I miss it as well and as much as I'm looking forward to what next in Action Comics and Legion of Superheroes, I would have loved to have seen Tomasi finish his story first and hopefully we get to see Batman get a similar treatment with Selina in this current run with Tynion at the helm. I'm so excited for their kid. 😄
Sal - There's a moment where Ragrzah says Are... are you speaking to me?
YOU HAVE NO NOSE!!
Im dead 😂😂🤣
Meanwhile in an other universe where Marvel and Dc get their §#/] together and don't fight over a nickel issue, there's an overestimated Amalgam character named Rogol'doff that has a rich history with Ultimate Spider-boy!
This book actually pisses me off, I usually try not to get upset by stuff like comics but my god. Superman and the Super Sons stories where fanatic. We where actually seeing Superman and Jon grow and change as characters. The family aspect of the stories where great and they actually just threw it all away. Now Superman stories suck again when they where finally good again. Now we don’t have good Superman movies or comics. Being a Superman fan is hard!
So I took a break from comics since around July last year. I was excited to see this back issues episode to catch me up... now I'm really upset that they ruined everything they had going for them. This and Guardians of the Galaxy have permanently soured my opinion of Bendis, who at one point was maybe my favorite writer.
“I don’t have object permeance” lmaooo
So glad I woke up early to watch this before class
The Off the Rack reviews were great and I couldn’t wait for the back issues
Me: Bendis, how many layers are there to the Earth?
Bendis: 3?
Me: Where's the mantle?
I was considering buying this min series but after watching this video, I don;t think I will. You have just saved me about twenty something dolalrs. Thank you.
When I saw you were doing this book I was 'well this is going to suck'
But then I remembered Back Issues is better with bad books, got on board and I have to say this was great
Thanks guys
Hearing about this pisses me off because I actually enjoyed super sons and it was my favorite thing in rebirth
Armin Tanzarian... Was 'presque vu'ing that like Chekov with 'Botanty Bay' in Wrath of Khan. Then thought "SKINNER!!!"
Bendis finished..... all over Superman.
This is probably my favourite episode in a while!
Rogol Zaar looks like Rune from Malibu mashed up with Morg, the herald of Galactus.
This was one of the most fun episodes EVER!!!
This is the run that got me into Superman.
This bugged the hell out of me because I was really enjoying Jurgens’ run on Action Comics and where it was going…and then it got cut short for this. All the good will Jurgens and Tomasi built up got thrown away.
Every time I hear “Rogel Zaar” my mind thinks of “Rem Lezar” from Best of the Worst.
This video has truly aged like a Fine Wine 🍷 Especially Now in 2020 where Bendis has left though he did shit on the comic on his way out 🔥
I cannot now not unhear Ru Gal Zarr's Jim Cumming's Groggily Villain voice with a 90's filter over it because Ethen hit it on the head Ru Gal Zarr is a Ducktales villain.
BENDIS IS COMING... TO COMIC POP!!!
Okay, we're gonna repurpose this rejected Nu52 Etrigan redesign as a new villain. What would make this less obvious? I know, we'll make his skin pale, bedazzle him with jewels and give him a rad battle-ax!
How I imagine the Rogul pitch meeting going
I took a chance here just to see your version of explaining comics and I have to say - you guys are hilarious and your critique of this book is entertaining.

...or not. Whatever works!¡
This is going to be good. I always love it when a bad story is shredded by you guys.
We deserved Jonathan Hickman & we got a passed his prime Bendis
