    I had ICL 13 years ago. My right eye was never right from day one. Vision would change dramatically daily. Some days ok. Some days horrible. Doctor said it was a perfect surgery. No issue. The other eye was amazing. Better than 20/20. They kept my vision good (considering the issue with the one eye) for about 9 years. Then I had to get glasses. So was it worth 9 years of not wearing glasses? Worth the risk? Looking back I don’t think so. I had been wearing glasses for 30 years. I was used to it. And not wearing them for 9 years didn’t really change my quality of life all that much. So I’d recommended seriously considering having an option surgery when it’s not all that life changing.

      Hi Brett. Have you still got the ICL's in your eyes because if so, you must get an ECC (Endothelial Cell Count) check because this can reduce to to the stage of corneal transplant being needed if not caught early enough!

    1. Infection: Any surgical procedure carries a risk of infection, which can potentially affect the eye and vision.
    2. Cataracts: There is a risk that the ICL might cause or accelerate the development of cataracts, especially in younger patients.
    3. Increased Intraocular Pressure (IOP): The ICL might cause increased IOP, which can lead to glaucoma if not properly managed.
    4. Halos and Glare: Some patients might experience halos or glare around lights, particularly at night.
    5. Vision Loss: Although rare, there is a small risk of significant vision loss due to complications from the surgery.
    6. Lens Dislocation: The ICL can sometimes shift out of place, requiring further surgical intervention.
    7. Endothelial Cell Loss: The procedure may cause a decrease in the number of endothelial cells in the cornea, which are crucial for maintaining corneal transparency.
    8. Retinal Detachment: This is a rare but serious complication where the retina separates from the back of the eye, potentially leading to vision loss.
    9. Inflammation: Post-surgical inflammation is possible, which may require medication to manage.
    10. Corrective Lens Power Issues: In some cases, the ICL might not provide the desired correction, leading to the need for additional procedures or glasses/contacts.
    11. Need for Future Surgeries: The ICL may need to be replaced or removed in the future, depending on the patient’s eye health and vision changes over time.

    I think I'll stick with glasses and contacts. I'm around -8 and -9 in my eyes, and almost 40 yrs old. At possibly $4k USD per eye, that will easily pay for glasses and contacts (and eye appointments) for the rest of my life. 🤷🏻

    Can you please tell us where to find data or evidence that daily disposable contact wearers have a 1 in 1000 chance of losing “2 lines” in a year? I find this to be very interesting and would like to read some more on the subject. It sounds like the risk is being attributed to just wearing contact lenses, not poor handling or improper use?

    • @theveganflower5135
      @theveganflower5135 2 года назад

      I was wondering this too. I lost 2 lines in 2 years. Those 2 years I had many issues with my contacts and was constantly needing steroid drops. I asked my optometrist about it a few weeks ago for my yearly checkup and she said it wasn't anything I've done. That it's actually very lucky I had kept 20/20 vision with how long I used the same brand for. I had asked the optometrist last year too and he too said it wasn't anything I've done to lose 2 lines and gain 1.5. That the risk was already there. I'd just like to see the research or something to better understand the risks.

  • @-1-2-1-
    @-1-2-1- 2 года назад +14

    More misleading marketing from Reinstein. He is playing down the significance of loosing one/two lines. This explanation is extremely misleading as loosing one/two lines BCVA is a terrible loss and can be devastating. If they REALLY wanted to educate the patient they should suggest trying out glasses +1D. NO ONE WILL FIND THIS ACCEPTABLE. It is a common misconception that 20/40 driving standard is fine and he is playing on this. It is actually severely disabling and detrimental to quality of life - just try it before surgery!

    • @LadyBovine
      @LadyBovine 2 года назад +1

      I agree with what you're saying, but I wanted to add that I think most people could adapt well to *+1 glasses given some time. I had to wear glasses before my ICL exam, and continued to until my surgery. Those were old glasses that were in practice undercorrected by about 1.25 diopters each eye, and as much as it was a bit shockingly bad at first (going from contacts), I actually got used to it to the point where i was thinking "this isn't so bad" within some weeks. Loss of two lines is still a significantly bad outcome if it's uncorrectable, but you could live a fairly normal life with less than razor sharp vision. I can't speak to double vision or other vision artifacts which might be much worse. I still agree the risk message is a bit sales-pitchy here, like you said.

    Honestly speaking, as a patient, I do need to understand risks that are involved in a procedure . However, as a professional, you need to give me a good recommendation. instead of telling me:" I have told you all the risks and now it is up to you to decide if you want the surgery to be done or not". No ! you need to make a decision for me in this circumstance and willing to take the liability of any outcomes. That is what professionals for.

      Come on, be an adult and make a decision. Doctor's job is to make you understand the risks and your job is to make a decision. Either take the risk or not. What you are saying is for doctor to become similar to your patrons(parents) and make that decision for you. Similar to brainlessly following wills of your parents either for marriage, college, profession etc. You have own your own life. And life is all about making decisions. You cant shift the blame and responsibilities to others, they are not your parents, and you are not a kid. If you still can't make a decision, you gotta grow up. May be you are not old enough. I aint trying to disparage, accuse or blame you. I had similar experiences before i turned 16. Then i learned about being an adult, made decisions by myself and owned my decisions and bore my blames. You cant always follow someone's advices, no one is gonna live your life for you. Grow up.

      @@Justice680 that's not so bad. 16 years is a long time glasses free. My doctor told me that the risk of developing cataracts due to ICLs greatly increase after 40s and 50s. Retinal detachment is very rare with ICLs. Are you back to glasses now? How's your eyesight and eye health? 16 years is good value for money but I hope the ICL didn't damage your retina or cornea

      @@Justice680 it's unrealistic to expect perfect vision after 16 years. Vision will fluctuate. That's obvious. So long as your retina is not compromised you can still have good vision
