Netflix’s Hollywood is a fantastic series that keeps you guessing throughout its entire 7 episode run. However, many audience members couldn’t help but feel like the payoff to all that build up is a bit lacking. But why? Why aren’t some people happy with the ending?
See, Hollywood gives us a look at the glitz and glam of the golden age of the movie business, only significantly more gritty than we are used to. This is the show’s major selling point. Taking something that is often presented to us in a clean, largely wholesome way, and giving it to us raw and unfiltered.
Which is why the sort of sudden tone change at the end, might have left people with a bad taste in their mouth.
Now, before I dive into what exactly I mean, I’m gonna slap up here a spoiler warning, since I am going to be talking about the end of the show here. I’d highly recommend checking out the show before you watch this video. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
Ok, now let’s get into exactly what I mean here.

They explain in the plot why it ended the way it did. They say the Meg can’t die because that will tell all the little girls of color that there’s no point in trying. So they follow their own plot and every POC and gay person gets their happy ending.

As I see it, the happy ending was the series' way of suggesting an "if only" scenario. After showing us the darker side of Hollywood at that time (that was all too real), the show offers us an alternative outcome for the industry, and world, if only a few people had chosen to do the right thing, sooner. We have the progress today, sure, but "Hollywood" wants us to think about how much more quickly it could have been achieved, if only...

Vonnie Stewart you can't just make a tv show about a historical figures, make it completely inaccurate and say "you shoulda googled it". It's like putting Martin Luther King in a show and making him a pedo, or putting Hitler in a show and making him a nice guy, completely unacceptable because it rewrites who they were in life. I think it would have been ok it fictional characters but not with real people

The happy ending was great. Honestly as a poc myself, I was expecting the worse outcome because of the time period and what the show set up. To be surprised by a happy ending shows our own social conditioning to expect the worse in stories like these. While I understand the tone shift is a bit jarring, that truly seemed like the whole point of it all. You also have the bonus effect of people researching some of the real characters and realizing the harsh reality that so much still needs to change. There’s still so much we need to stand together and support.

    • @EskChan19
      @EskChan19 4 года назад

You didn't expect the worse outcome because of conditioning but because you knew the facts. Having the show change that just to not hurt your fee-fees is patronizing and dishonest. In the end, all this does is say that the people making this think that people of color cannot handle the truth and need to be buttered up. All it shows is that these people think that you can't handle reality and need to be told that everything went well in the end. And you celebrate that these writers think that you are too weak and emotionally unstable to handle the truth. Congratulations POC, you played yourself.

Woah, @Randy19, that’s NOT what this STORY says when it gets a happy ending. I do not think the writing suggests a weakness in colored people’s perception of the world...how bout WE LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD, what’s wrong with a good story that happens to give ME and maybe some like me or similar a good feeling instead of the ones the real world often gives us....have a good day smh 🤦🏾‍♀️ (oh and the pic is me so yeah I’m a black woman)

I binge watched the whole series with my husband, and I must say I was very confused with your affirmation that the series was so dark. From the beginning it felt to me that the story took a very realistic but hopeful approach to everything, not shying away from showing that things do have a dark side to them, but instead choosing to focus mostly on the small victories the characters had over those difficulties, which eventually grow into larger and larger victories for themselves and the world around them.
All that said, I'm no expert. One of the first thing I did say to my husband at around the midpoint of the season was "I love how realistic and humane the story feels (even if I now know it's not historically accurate), while not being overly dramatic and dark." So I still feel it reached a good balance between dark undertones and a hopeful theme of overcoming difficulties and changing the world as you do so.

So I haven’t seen this so far but what if the ending of “Meg” had been tweaked as well as the ending of the series. Have Meg decide to climb back down but instead get blown off the Hollywood sign. Have the movie be a successful box office hit that becomes a classic but gets snubbed at the awards show. Basically they create a masterpiece of a movie that shows life isn’t always perfect and they are recognized for it just not formally as that wouldn’t be “appropriate” for the time piece.

No way the all- white male Academy would have awarded Meg that much... & it was definitely a tone switch that was too abrupt. Anna Mae Wong should have won of course, but yeah right..5 Oscars? Now if we could have seen behind the scenes changes in the Academy that would be better. And believable.

Never in my life have I ever saw a show with so many "happy" persons, pairs and "happy" $ex scenes.
I am a very tolerant man.
    I understand inclusion.
But ALL the Netflix originals have "happy persons" in them(interrasial "happy" $ex) and it's ok, but Hollywood.....omfg they stuff this "happy" thing down our throat like no other !!!
In this show, 90% of the persons are "happy" !!!!
This show has 85% "happy" $ex scenes and 15% "non happy" $ex scenes.
This show and Netflix is trying to tell us that, today, "happy $ex" is normal and at every corner, and that heterosexual $ex is not normal and not at ever corner.
I don't know who makes these decisions at Netflix but this is fucked up.
Both are normal...and I couldn't care less...but when a TV show/movie etc tries to force a different reality down my throat, I have a problem !!!!
I liked the show a lot besides the 80% "happy" scenes.

In the end, all this shows us is that the makers of this series think that people of color and gay people cannot handle reality and need things to be sugarcoated for them. It shows us that they think that they need to protect people of color and gay people from history, because we can't risk letting any of their feelings get hurt. And that's just sad. And that people celebrate this and agree with them that we can't let PoC and LGBTQ people ever not feel like the world is a perfect box of chocolate is disgusting. It's patronizing and tells us exactly how weak the makers of this show think these people are.
