Exactly. I see a lot of "woke" posts all around that condemns the show and calls it dangerous. I think that those people are being severely condescending towards the show's audience. Hollywood is so over the top, that no one in their right mind would think that it reflects reality in any meaningful way. Claiming that the show is dangerous is not far from claiming that The Sound of Music is dangerous towards our understanding of holocaust survivors. And this is exactly the point. Hollywood is not only trying to mimic the style, clothes, music etc. from that period, but also how stories were told. I think that the key was when they discussed whether to rewrite the ending of Peg/Meg. This was a discussion that pointed back on the show itself. They said they were doing it because they thought it would be more empowering for women in Hollywood. Obviously everyone is painfully aware of reality (and in this context: the real story of Peg), so rewriting history isn't the same as deleting it, it's a tool to inject hope into people and battle cynicism. This was also the function that movies had during that time and during the great depression, where reality was exceptionally bleak.

Camille deserved so much better. While the other main characters (Archie, Jack and Rock Hudson) have MANY insight in their lives, where they are from, their conflicts and motivation (all of the men show their passion, why they wanna be in hollywood, and how long they are willing to go to achive their dreams for MANY times in the show), camille has just a few scenes developing her character. Until more than half of the show they really just don´t show enough of her. They say she is the best actress in the studio but they don´t show that, she only is shown acting 2 times before the casting (the 2 maid scenes). They cast her as the protagonist of the movie but until half the show she is NOT a protagonist in the show. The show portrays her more like an idea ("we want a black woman in a lead role") than a human character that the audience roots to overcome racism in hollywood and achieve the goal of being a successful actress. I really wish they have invested in her character development as much as with the men.

Judy Garland did give a better more emotionally involved performance but the film cost $5.4 million, double than it should. As a result, it would unlikely break even; it was a small story told on a big budget. In addition, she had no studio behind her and was not too well liked professionally. There may also have been a minimalist costume design and so he was being tested. The film might have a specific audience target in mind. Let me be the one to say that Hollywood gives hints of the book Star Power written by the late Scotty Bowers. The underbelly of LGBTQ Hollywood actors being matched with dates from a gas station within the same town. Very little diversity being catapulted during the celluloid era in the golden age of entertainment. Mr. Bower himself told me once that it was rare for him to set up interracial relations, though it was done just as it was. Either way, I love this re-imagination through Ryan Murphy's perspective; it couldn't be more fitting.

Yes she played maids roles as did all other Black actors and actresses in most roles, but Hattie was extremely wealthy, lived in a Mansion in an all White neighborhood and was loved and respected. Hattie was quoted as saying her fellow Black peers would condemn her for the roles she played and she said " I had rather play a Maid for $500 per week than be a maid for $5 per week" . Hattie was not segregated into another room at the Oscars. She was seated toward the front with other Black actors and actresses. Watch her win the Oscar on the GWTW anniversary issue and see.

Hattie McDaniel did not play a maid in gone with the wind, she played a slave. Not a maid. Very different. Her role and the roles of all the other “black” characters in that book and film are evidence of how the lives of black people were framed so as not to matter in all forms of American media. This film scores of others are forms of fiction that make it impossible to empathize with the “black” characters. This framing of “black people has bled into real life making it easy for non-“black” people to see a “black” person be harmed or killed unjustly and feel...nothing. Not even a drop of empathy, rather many focus on arbitrary things in the life of the harmed or killed “black” person to make it seem like they must have deserved to be harmed or killed. Hollywood is and always has been (from Birth of a Nation, until now) a propaganda machine. A very successful one at that. They just tried to change history by calling a slave a maid. Oh the caucasity.
