  • A higher number of pixels is not always a good thing! In this video we explain the advantages to lower megapixel cameras for video and why 4K cinema cameras use less megapixels than most modern photography cameras.
    The Canon EOS R5 (and R6) as well as the Sony A7sIII are great cameras. They all have their pros and cons. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
    Cheers,
    Cliff & Kajun

    What camera do you use, and if you could would you get the *Canon EOS R5* , or the soon to be announced *Sony A7sIII* _(coming July 28th)_ ? Also, *why?* 🤘

      Great video. I’ve heard that more megapixels for video isn’t always better but never understood why. Thanks for explaining. We have been using a canon 80d with sigma 18-35 for the last 3 years along with iPhones for our videos. The only other lenses we have are kit so I don’t really count those and hardly use them. Been thinking about using the 80d specifically for studio setup and purchasing another camera for anything outside of studio in the next 6 months to a year. Will use 90% for video, occasional pictures. Torn between the R6 and a7s3. What are your thoughts on the r6 vs a7s3? I’m not really worried about switching brands, I love tech and the process of figuring new stuff out.

    • @CliffKajun
      @CliffKajun  4 года назад +1

      Thank you! I think you are in a unique position where I wouldn't call it switching brands, as much as I would say you are finding your brand. We started out with canon, and did not have enough invested into it to mind the switch. (mom just got a great camera for mother's day 😂). In my opinion, Sony is better for video between the two. What you might consider doing, is buy an A7iii for about $1200 and either sell it to upgrade or keep it as a great B cam. (just a thought). Canon and Sony are both great for video, but if you had to start from scratch, I give _Sony_ the edge. I don't expect the A7sIII to take great photos. That's where your canon, or a older A7III *might* be better as a backup.

    The extra green pixel is used for the luminance (brightness)

    • @CliffKajun
      @CliffKajun  4 года назад +9

      That makes perfect sense, thanks! I also found this after taking the time to research this part:
      _A Bayer array consists of alternating rows of red-green and green-blue filters. Notice how the Bayer array contains twice as many green as red or blue sensors. Each primary color does not receive an equal fraction of the total area because the human eye is more sensitive to green light than both red and blue light. Redundancy with green pixels produces an image which appears less noisy and has finer detail than could be accomplished if each color were treated equally. This also explains why noise in the green channel is much less than for the other two primary colors (see "Understanding Image Noise" for an example)._ - Cambridge in Colour

    • @Hangs4Fun

Because the human retina is naturally more sensitive to green light in daytime vision.

      I was reading that same article. Plus, ironically was watching theY channel "extrashot" and his Sony A7iii Colour Settings (to get close to GX9 S.Cinetone)
      He does one of the best explanations and animations ive seen on how Bayer sensors work, work a watch if you havent seen it yet.
      Im interested because he is likely to produce a similar video on creating a custom picture profile for the Sony a7S3 to get as close to s.Cintetone as possible..

    • @Hangs4Fun
      @Hangs4Fun 4 года назад

      @@CliffKajun ruclips.net/video/UxzgMkVjKo4/видео.html this is what I have heard, that each pixel measures the amount of light hitting each photosite during the amount of time it is exposed, that measurement of light is the amount of luminance. So regardless of what filter matrix you put in front of them (most use bayer with RGGB), each photosite is a measurement of luminance. demosaicing is done to figure out the color of each pixel, but it all starts with every single pixel (for bayer that would mean red, 2xgreen, blue) has a luminance value in binary form streaming RAW to be processed... Any way, this is a great video for not only creating a PP for a73, but also a quick overview of how light is gathered and turned into color, since that matters when you are trying to reproduce another camera's color science. If you are getting the a7S3, extrashot channel will likely be publishing an s.Cinetone picture profile settings , and if you are interested, subcribe.

    Definitely nice video overall. You briefly described an advantage of shooting in 8k and cropping in for 5 seconds out of the entire video. Wish this was emphasized more because I definitely will benefit from the cropping in and more detail. Also, I hear oversampling and downscaling to 4k from 8k may reduce low light noise. I get that the EOS r5 can't shoot 8K for very long, which may be fixed with fans and software upgrades, but emphasizing the power of 8k for maybe 20 seconds would have been nice. I'm not giving a thumbs down because this video deserves some praise and respect

    This is a very nice and honest video. There are just a few videos saying that you (we) don’t need to upgrade every year. It's a marketing move of course, but I still stick to my camera from 2017 and she's still giving me great results. I have a Canon 5D Mark IV but I'm having issues with the noise at night. We create videos for my Org and is mostly at night. Any recommendations? I'm open to try other brands and cameras just for video. Thanks for the video, now I understand better how all this works.

    not all 12MP sensor is equal, if sony A7S iii gets BSI cmos sensor it would be a killer in low light!

      Very true. The reason we didn't discuss the quad Bayer sensor (effectively a 48mp with a little processing improvement in low light), is because we are fairly certain it will be a 12mp BSI CMOS sensor. We will know for sure in 3 days!

    That was a great explanation and some wise words of advice. I'm new to the camera scene but have a lot of experience with guitarists and other musos, and there are gear guys and music guys. The gear guys are always looking for the higher specs, but really you can make music on a cheap instrument - especially if you practice. Maybe its the same with photography? Thanks again for the clip 👍🇦🇺

    This was a great explanation and really thought out and the visuals of pixels was on point. Reading the comments on the Sony Alpha Rumors site, people complaining about the a7s3 only being 12 mp. I would love to link them this video haha. If someone needs 8k, a mirrorless hybrid is probably the wrong market to being looking in, and if you need more megapixels, sony and now canon offer cameras with much higher resolution. Just dont get the people complaining about the a7s3, just dont buy it then haha. I personally will be refreshing B&H to drop my preorder!

      Thank you! There's a tool for every job. I personally have no intention of recording and editing 8K (on a regular basis) until I have a true cinema grade camera with an extremely powerful editing machine. Not to mention the continued learning, failing, and experience along the way. 🤘

    The s1h from Panasonic has amazing low light capabilities and it's only 24 mega pixels. I'd like to see how well the A7sIII compares. Does 12 mega pixels make that big of difference in low light?

    • @CliffKajun
      @CliffKajun  4 года назад +1

      I personally do not have any experience with the sih, but have heard it does really well. Our a7iii has 24.2mp and does fantastic in low light. IMO, I would stick with what you have if you already like it. I think the 12mp will be slightly better (just for video), and the camera as a whole will too, but not necessarily worth the switch anytime soon.

    • @legendp2011
      @legendp2011 4 года назад

      @@germancreatives88 I used a custom colour profile on my sony, and somone mistook me for shooting on an Arri Alexa, it's all about the lighting, set design, actors (I don't use s-log, I get the colour as close to perfect in camera so I only have to tweak it slightly).
      there are videos showing how to easily fix the sony skin tones as well (I can link one if you want)

    • @abzde
      @abzde 4 года назад

      @@germancreatives88 I think you're right. I watched a video where the colors degraded on the Sony a7iii in low light, but the Panasonic s1h kept good color accuracy in low light. This might have something to do with the dual native iso that the s1h has.
      Unfortunately it looks like the Fx9 has dual native iso and the a7siii will not. I guess Sony wants to make sure the a7siii does not compete with the low light capabilities of their high end models like the Fx9.

    What mount and display are you using for your drone?

    • @CliffKajun
      @CliffKajun  4 года назад +1

      It is a dji crystal sky 7" high brightness monitor with a dji hood and random $40 Amazon mount. At $700, I honestly can't recommend the monitor unless you have a very specific need for it, like livestreaming from the drone to a multicam system. (Hdmi out). The monitor is much brighter, but, and this is huge, the software/hardware is very buggy. It can get choppy while flying and can even be risky when buzzing trees, etc.

    The problem is that unfortunately most people buy based on hype and brand loyalty and companies capitalize on that. I have see too many comments making fun at Sony for the lower megapixel count. People just have to find a way to justify their choices when they really don't have to. Then they end up spreading ignorance. Thanks for this amazing video and all the efforts that was put into it.
