I just listened a second time, and the song sunk in deeper this time. I was going to say, “it sounds like.... John Prine, Jackson Brown, etc BUT no, this is a Dave Morrison song, through and through 😎😍☀️
When I was a young man in the military, overseas in a jungle I had a national geographic moment. I was approache by a negrito or Shaman. People around me were terrified weapons were drawn. This particular group of people were know as head hunters. As I made eye contact with him we approached each other, each of us bowed. He began to speak someone translated and I received a pair of handmade swords. To this day I still don't understand why out of a whole company of Marines I was singled out. Your song brought these memories back to me. And yes I still have the swords
I can only assume that the negrito/shamen, witnessing a group of high strung young Marines freaking out over his presence, may have seen something of a serene soul and kindred spirit in you, Michael. Thank you for your service, and for sharing this tale, good sir!
you REALLY piss me off Dave...... well spoken with a Mark Twain/Will Rodgers logic..... AND a gifted musician and writer.... geeezus... leava little talent for us poor folk.
Thanks Dave. Your song provoked me to "preach" the following. Preaching to the choir just to get an "Amen" is a fruitless exercise. But speaking the truth IN LOVE with HUMILITY produces broken and contrite hearts; the only true sacrifice God honors. See Psalm 51
“If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles.” “Do not engage an enemy more powerful than you. And if it is unavoidable and you do have to engage, then make sure you engage it on your terms, not on your enemy’s terms.” “Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.” “Convince your enemy that he will gain very little by attacking you; this will diminish his enthusiasm.” “The opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.” “It is easy to love your friend, but sometimes the hardest lesson to learn is to love your enemy.” "Build your opponent a golden bridge to retreat across." - Sun Tzu
We need to choose the field of battle so that it is one we can win on. Our enemy outguns us massively. The same was true for Gandhi, Jesus, and MLK jr. I just have one thing to say. Wow !!! You have real musical / story telling talent. I'm not going to tell war stories people that weren't with me wouldn't care about, but when I joined the USCG, post Vietnam, our primary mission was SAR (search and rescue), and Med-Evacs. As the 1980's rolled in, our primary mission was changed to law enforcement, and drug interdiction, while still doing SAR and Med-Evacs. I can tell you, your song hit home and made me think of many times being the first boarding officer to climb aboard a suspected drug running vessel and trying to watch everyone inch of the vessel for a shooter, even though the vessel Captain was told to muster everyone on the aft deck, waiting for the rest of the CG boarding party to board and assist. You hope your shoot / don't shoot training saves you from shooting an innocent person, but when you're by yourself, offshore, on the rolling deck of an unfamiliar vessel, and your back up is a long way away, you hope if something goes down, you're faster than the other guy. The way forward is not by violence. It is by peaceful non-cooperation with the government. Tax protest. Bitcoin. Underground economy. Vegetable gardens and chicken coops.
I just got my capo out and played it as E A B. Nice tune!
Great song for our time! Your other video pointed me here, that Segway was perfect for the lyrics... Eb, yea we do that too, better on the vocals and the hands 😁
Nice tune.
Thank you Dave for sharing your talent with us all!!
Seems there's too much distrust and vitriol on all sides and we keep asking ourselves "how can they possibly think that way." We all think that we're the good guys. It would be nice if we could talk with each other again. Our "leaders" have let us down.

Thanks Dave!!
Nice
Great song Dave!

Thank you Dave. Beautiful.
Great song. I really enjoyed it. Really makes you ponder the words. I am now a subscriber. Thank you.
Anyone else reminded of Warren Zevon? I mean that as a supreme compliment, Dave.
