Redwoods treewalk and geothermal hot pools ROTORUA, New Zealand | NORTH ISLAND NZ TRAVEL VLOG 5/5

- Опубликовано: 14 авг 2020
- This is the final vlog from our North Island NZ road trip that we shot a couple of weeks back. We've been to Rotorua many times before, but there's always so much to see and do in this city renowned for its fascinating geothermal activity. Rotorua is located in the Bay of Plenty region in New Zealand.
En route to Rotorua from Gisborne, we decided to make a quick stop to check out Lake Okataina but it wasn't much longer before we finally arrived at Redwoods Treewalk. This was something on our 'must do' list for Rotorua especially since there was a special on where you could do both the day and night time walks for $30 per person (normally you would have to pay for each walk so $60 per person).
Redwoods treewalk is a unique tree top walk suspended high up above the forest floor and takes roughly 40 minutes to cover the course. We recommend going later in the afternoon so that you can enjoy both the day and evening views as the sun goes down. It's quite a different experience at night when all the lights come on too. You'll want to line up relatively earlier for the night walk as the queue can get pretty long if you go too late.
Redwoods Treewalk
Address: 1 Long Mile Road, access off Tarawera Road, Whakarewarewa, Rotorua 3010
Hours: Monday - Sunday 9:30am-8pm (up to 9pm on Saturdays)
Rotorua is famous for its geothermal activity, hot pools, mud pools, and geysers and there are a few main places where you can check this out but Peter's favourite to see all this is Wai-O-Tapu. Here you can see acidic green lakes and the massive champagne pool where the natural colours are very vivid and striking. With 3 different walks you can do around Wai-O-Tapu, you can easily spend around 2 or so hours wondering about.
Wai-O-Tapu
Address: 201 Waiotapu Loop Road, Rotorua 3073
Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Sat & Sun 9am-4pm
Closed Wednesdays and Thursdays
Something we really enjoy doing in cold weather is going for a soak in mineral hot pools. We find it's a great way to relax muscles and joints. An awesome thing about Waikite Valley Thermal Pools and what drew us to it is that it has private hot pools that you can book for 40 minute time slots and that also gives you access to their public pools. Best of all it's only a few bucks more than the general admission price and pools are drained and refilled daily.
Waikite Valley Thermal Pools
Address: 648 Waikite Valley Road, Waikite Valley, Rotorua 3077
Hours: Monday - Sunday 10:30am-8pm
To wrap up our time in Rotorua and our North Island road trip, we went to Saigon '60s for some delicious Vietnamese cuisine. We love Vietnamese food and were very happy to come across this place. Highly recommend their spring rolls! It transported us right back to Vietnam.
Saigon '60s Vietnamese Cuisine
Address: 1205 Fenton Street, Rotorua 3010
Hours: Monday - Sunday 11am-8:30pm

I ALWAYS go to Saigon 60s when in Rotorua!! Yumm
Oh my goodness it's sooo good right!? Those springrolls legit taste like what we got to eat in Vietnam and I wish they had a store here in Auckland! That would be the best lockdown snack 😁💕🤤😋
Rotorua is such an amazing destination!!! When I was there in February, I did a canopy in the forest. It was soooo much fun!!
That sounds awesome! We love Rotorua too, been there heaps and there's still new things to see and do 😁👍
@@PeterandYen 100% agreed
Thermal pool looks perfect for a cold day and after your biking experience
It was a totally relaxing and great winter activity ☺️👍
The redwoods tree walk looks so majestic at night. Hopefully when I get to Rotorua, I get to experience it. I've enjoyed your series of your travels in the North Island. I look forward to you next video.
It was an amazing experience and we're a bit sad at the end of this roadtrip. We were even looking at ways to extend the trip but we were running into bad weather so made the call to come back to Auckland. Will be back at it again once the lockdown in New Zealand is over 😁✌
Ohohoh hot spring! Look at the smoke coming out. It's like s movie scene!!!
😁 it is! For a small country it has such varied natural scenery
Thank you for the content and information on prices etc I’m prepping for our trip in 3 weeks will definitely check these places out
No worries hope you have a great time 👍
I've enjoyed this whole vlog series💕 The redwoods look amazing. It'd be worth it just for the night light show. I thought my color settings were off looking at the green Springs/ Lake. Everything there looks like its out of a fairy tale💕
Yen you're so gorgeous😘 Looking like a model there in the springs You deserved it after the bikes and stairs you previously did.
That food looked delicious as usual. Large portions.
I hope you and your families are staying safe. Thank goodness you're in a country that has real leadership to handle the covid crisis. So I know the cases they've just found won't turn into many.
Love too you both💕💕
Have you guys done the South Isle?
Thanks so much Jen ❤️❤️❤️☺️ you're too kind! ❤️❤️ Yea the colours there are amazing, all natural and so vividly striking. Looked like what I would imagine some radioactive pool to look like lol 💚 Yea we were planning a South Island trip but we're back in lockdown here in Auckland so have to stay at home for 2 weeks 😅 hopefully we'll be able to travel domestically again soon when it's safe for everyone to 🤞
We had a trip planned to go to the snow (Mt Ruapehu) a few days ago over this weekend but unfortunately the lockdown prevented that and we had to again cancel plans and bookings. Thankful we got to enjoy a lot of travel around North Island beforehand though ❤️🙂 Stay safe and take care! 👋
Thank's so much😊 Take care. Regard from Chile 🇨🇱
That is a line there, good thing you have the tea to warm up
By the time we got back there were lines stretching two times when we started. They must have been freezing 🥶 😂
This forest looks impressive. Have a nice day!
Pretty cool and so tall ay? ☺️🌳💚 Have a great day too Thu 🙂👍
Love your road trip series guys! Thanks for showing us around your beautiful country New Zealand! 😍😍😍
Thanks for flowing along with us 😊✌ new Zealand is an amazing country that's for sure. We're planning to go south island sometime too once the lockdown is over
Loving the light show! Great idea for them to set that up as another attraction
😍👍
Ahhhh.... a NZ private onsen experience! 😍😍😍
✌😁 so relaxing
Wow didn’t know they do the Redwoods walk at night, beautiful! :)
Yea! It's quite a different experience! Too bad couldn't pick much of it up with our camera but it's definitely worth experiencing both I reckon ☺️👍
We can see why that is Peter's favorite geothermal hot spring
😁✌ so cool right! Dinosaur 🦕 🦖 land
They made everything very well harmonized with the nature. And look at the night view! Jesus. It is such a romantic atmosphere 🥰
So glad that they managed to engineer this park to be able to grow with the trees 🌳 not restricting them in any way 🙌
Knew yen would go for that hearty soup 🍜 🤪 and peter goes for the savage mode 🤣 , the ASMR CRUNCH 😅
😂 yen n her soups 🍲 especially noodle 🍜 soups 🍲 I'm more a rice and carbs kinda guy 🤤👌
Hello again guys! Another beautiful vlog! The Redwoods treewalk looks so beautiful! Love the fact that they’ve considered the trees and environment while building the treewalk! The lights and sparkles at night also looked stunning! Will definitely visit when we go to NZ! The thermal pools experience also looks absolutely relaxing! Great destination! Fantastic series guys! Have loved following your journey! Can’t wait for more series to come! Take care, Alditha
Thank you Alditha 👋😁💕 Rotorua is a really popular tourist destination both for kiwis and overseas people alike. Heaps of stuff to do there. This is actually our second vlog from rotorua ✌️☺️ It's great the ecological engineering they did. Had a whole expert German team fly in to design and build it all 👍☺️ Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend and take care! ❤️👋😁
Wow that bridge from redwood looks so fun and amazing to walk thru! Reminds me of Pandora tree of life! In avatar...where the blue people lo e on!! This is a place to visit!!! Looks soooo fun!!
Haha yea it does look a bit like that ay! Such a unique experience 👍
Ur video always make me fall in love with nz .❤☺☺
😁 good good New Zealand is a wonderful place to visit for sure
@@PeterandYen i am planning to study in waikato university.and settle in hamilton in the future.is it a good place to settle????
We've never lived in Hamilton so can't really give you a well informed opinion sorry! We've made a few videos from there before though that might help give you an idea of the vibe. It's peaceful and quiet.
It was so nice to see the trees light up and the hot pools. Great destination. Thanks for sharing:)
😁 awesome experience through the redwoods especially seeing them all lit up at night 🌉 🌙
Another great episode, guys. We really love these road trip episodes. Thanks for taking us around to beautiful places. 😍
No worries guys! Thanks for watching 👀 yen n I both really enjoy road tripping new Zealand 🇳🇿 ❤
I didn't realize how big your camera is. That's a workout. Haha Redwoods sounds like a ton of fun. We've heard there's something similar in the Midwest. Love the bridges. It does remind us of the parks in Germany. Oooohh, the lamps are gorgeous.
😍 magical place right! Yeah this fuji is a bit lighter than the old Canon we had but both are bricks 😂
1:02 Whoaaa Yen holding that machine!! 💪
😁 the Fuji 🗻 is lighter than the old Canon set up
Great Vlog. This was fun to watch and very informative. You guys are great presenters and I wish your channel heaps of likes success.
Thank you glad you enjoyed it and appreciate the kind words 👍
Can't imagine the cold chilly night you guys went through! I would get the heat-pad from Daiso, I'm realllllly scared of the cold (Sue) :P But it's definitely totally worth it for the night lights!! Bet it's so so much prettier in real life~~~ That's why visiting NZ is our dream destination, there's so much beauty in NZ!
Hahaha yeah it was freezing 🥶 at night 🌉 in the redwoods. Surely would have been well into the negatives my hands were frozen holding the camera 📷 😅 but you're right though 💯 worth it. Hope you two do get to visit one day!
Soaking in the water after the bike ride must have been so relaxing! It's quite nice that they have private pools that you can rent. The whole place looked amazing 😃
The natural springs that are all around New Zealand are amazing! Super relaxing and feels so much better knowing the water is naturally heated
The Redwoods Treewalk is amazing! You must feel like flying through the tall trees like Tarzan. Beautiful! 😀
Hahaha yes totally! Reminds us of the video you guys made doing the gibbon experience in laos. We really want to experience that too one day.
I love this vlog! Probably one of my favs!! What a awesome journey in the forest!! That lime juice water in the pond!! So green so different ! The steam coming from the ground so unreal
Thanks Vic! The colours of Rotorua are super cool. Such an amazing geothermal and volcanic land. The pool is super green ay.. looks radioactive lol 😅
Great series guys!! The suspended bridge through the forest is super cool, haven't experienced that! That's awesome they built everything around the trees without causing harm! Geothermal pools are awesome! So relaxing!
Thanks guys! Yea it's very cool the engineering behind the treewalk. Impressive when you see how big the area is too and how many bridges there are! ☺️👍 Hot pools are the best.. especially in winter 😊👌
I did a working holiday in NZ many years ago. I miss it every day. Your videos really take me back. Great footage, and you two are really lovely hosts. Thank you.
You're too kind thanks for checking out our video Conrad. You never know you might find yourself back here one day 😁🤞
You guys are great! I love your videos. Great descriptions, great scenery and great editing. We are looking forward to our trip in late March and early April. Wishing you much success and thanks again for the recommendations!

Wow the Redwoods Tree Walk is so cool! Great series guys I really enjoyed it 👍
Thanks heaps guys! Quite a unique experience seeing a forest from high up off the ground ☺️👍
Such as shame that this is the last episode of this road trip, I really enjoyed seeing and learning about the North Island. Can't wait to see where you travel to next!

Hahahaha cracking jokes isn't my specialty 😅 true that forget that aussie doesn't have this kinda geothermal activity. Y'all should come new Zealand sometime think the whole fam would really enjoy it. That hot pools is family friendly too 😁🤙
That treewalk is beautiful! Reminds us a bit of where we just visited in Penang a few days ago. So peaceful to be among the trees and nature like this
Really cool activity 👍 I really want to go to the gibbon tree adventure in i think it was laos one day.
Okataina lake we came across a sacred ancient burial ground there deep in the woods on one of our school camps in the 1980s. Some how we lost our track and came across it...There we jewels and necklaces layed around the site...It was like something out of a indiana jones movie!..Very graphic and unknown
Its been a great series you 2. What a beautiful country we have :-)
Thanks Jessica 😊 yup totally right new Zealand is amazing
I went to the Waiotapu mud pools almost 10 years ago. I had a great time in Rotorua.
The Redwood Treetop walk was awesome. I didn't know about it. I'll have to go next time.
Yo lin! The redwoods was only created about 4 or 5 years ago so that might explain why you didn't know about it 😁
It feels like we have been hearing a lot about Rotorua from you guys before.
Can see why this is the finale of your North Island trip series 👍🏻
This city has a lot to offer. We would love doing that treewalk activity, looks fun and enjoyable.
Ahhh taking a dip in the hot pools is something we really need right now!
We miss our gym during the lockdown as they have the spa and sauna, however they are currently closed during the lockdown. It has been too long!
Haha yea this is our second vlog from Rotorua ✌️😁 it really is an adventure land there, so much stuff to see and do and something for everyone really. It's a really popular destination for both locals and overseas tourists ☺️👍 aw no hopefully your spa and sauna are able to reopen again safely soon 🤞 really is such a great way to relax your muscles 💕 take care guys and stay safe 🌻💛
Oof the crunch on those spring rolls. And that loaded up banh mi with all the pate. Can imagine how excited you guys had to be to find this spot with your love of Vietnamese food!
Miss vietnamese food so much! There's a new place that opened near us we've been going so much until this whole lockdown thing happened again. Com tam for me and pho for yen 👌😁
Very beautiful video, the tree walk is amazing, we had toured NZ a couple years ago, great to have a NZ fix in lockdown.

The treewalk looks amazing!! Love the suspension!! I think it's totally worth paying for the experience and enjoying the nature! omg Altitude experience, I think I would do the same as you guys, just stick to the bridge hehe! wait... am I hearing.... Studio Ghilbi? Spirited away!!!😍😍😍
Yes! It's a spirited away remix instrumental 😁 the tree 🌳 walk 🚶♂️ was just amazing even doing it back to back 2nd time just as amazing as the first.
First time I've seen your vlogs and it made me gt all teary eye as Rotorua is my hme town and I miss it so mch as I am residing in Brisbane Australia. All the places you went to are amazing. Thank you for sharing your journey and hope to see more
Thanks for dropping us that comment Marlene ❤ lucky your home is only a short plane ride away from Brisbane 😊 we've been going to rotorua since we were both kids, love the place.
Hey Peter and Yen!! That's cool you're going to Rotorua! We haven't heard of any of the places you've been so this has been a beautiful adventure. Love your drone footage!! We would LOVE to do that Tree Walk! $19.50 USD is a great price for this type of excursion. The extreme altitude experience would be fun too! We have some gorgeous Redwood forests in California.. so it's so beautiful to see that in New Zealand. They did a lot to make sure it was sustainable and ecofriendly for sure! Love that you can check it out at night too, and so beautiful all the lights!! We would do the night visit for sure!! That geothermal hot springs.. we bet that sulfur is a big punch to the sinuses LOL!! That is definitely a large and deep hot spring and very affordable to visit! Love you went to a place you could have a private soak!! So glad you had such an awesome experience. That Pho spot... amazingness!! Pho and Bahn Mi are our favorites for Vietnamese!! Thanks for taking us with you, and look forward to the next adventure!! Lots of love to you guys!!
Hey girls! ☺️👋 We had an awesome time thanks and glad you enjoyed this video and seeing the stuff we got up to too ☺️👍 it's awesome seeing the forest from those elevated views and a hot spring soak on a cold winter's day is true bliss 😊 haha the sulfur smell can take a little getting use to but the views are totally worth it 😁👍 the Vietnamese was legit delicious!! Take care and stay safe you two 💕☺️
redwoods tree walk looks real cool great views the lamps and lights at night look cool too amazing hot pools and springs there the soak in the hotpool looked nice and relaxing nice food is next guess hungry after the walks

Thanks JJ! Which places did you visit and where was your fave? 🙂
@@PeterandYen I'm pretty partial to Kaikoura!! The Bay of Islands is also amazing... I haven't seen all that much, so I'm just eager to explore more!!
Aw nice 👍 hope you'll be able to return soon 🤞 We still dunno when borders will open up fully again but doesn't feel like it's gonna be this year unfortunately for those wanting to visit or move here. Stay safe and take care! 🍀
@@PeterandYen it will happen when it happens! You guys stay safe too and keep up the vlogs! 😁

Yay chicken pho! I am sure you appreciated the warm pho after the cold day. There you go, you just said it as I typed it hahaha
That's yen's go to noodle 🍜 after a chilly winter day here in New Zealand 🇳🇿
Great entertainment thanks.
Thanks for watching 👀
Great meal guys!
Oh no the road trip is over 😥😥
but we are happy we got to see all these places through your videos
We're happy to have you both along for the ride too. Unfortunately new Zealand is back in lockdown right now. But in two weeks when things get better hopefully we can get back to road tripping again.
Beautiful
Peter going for hot spring spa? :D The hot pool is so green, it's like cendol colour, yums! except that pool is acidic haha!
Hahaha yes! Cendol 🤤
That road was a bit claustrophobic. But it need somewhere... that’s good! Haha
Peter you’ve become a pro with the drone. Really captures the natural beauty
Some new Zealand roads are pretty narrow that's for sure. Need to be extra careful driving outside of the cities 🤙
Never been interested in visiting Rotorua before, but after watching you guys, it's definitely on the list now :)
Haha it's a great place 😁 some people don't like the smell though but honestly you get use to it pretty quick plus it's worth it seeing all the amazing geothermal land and doing fun activities in the place ☺️ this is the second time we've made a vlog from Rotorua ✌️😁 First one has the luge ride that the place is well known for 👍
@@PeterandYen I must dig that one up.
That narrow walkway in the treewalk! Like how you walked backwards and talked for that one, Peter
Lucky there was only one way to go or I probably would have tripped 😂
Visited Redwood twice. Bridges not built yet though. Thanks for sharing the latest.
Ahh hope you get to visit next time and walk the bridges too! 🙂👍
The sling grows with the tree 😯! German team - quite the engineering indeed!
Yeah so smart right! Protect the trees 🌳
Great video I love tiki touring nz from the comfort of my couch so thanks .

Kia ora Shannon! Awesome to hear we could share some places with you to check out 😁✌ Rotorua is fantastic! We always love our trips there ❤️
Oh cool! I always wanted to try out that redwoods tree walk, last time I went there I just walked on the ground for free 😂. Nice I like how it doesn’t actually hard the trees 🌳. Nice editing skills blurring out the children’s faces. Rotorua is so cool! Would love to back there and explore all the geothermal parks. Great vlog guys! Makes me miss home for sure. 😆
It would've looked incredibly from the ground up too though I'm sure 😍🌳 they're such super giants ay! Yea figured better to blur kids faces just in case since we accidentally caught them on camera 😅 Rotorua is super cool! Our vlog next week is from some places near there.. hamurana springs and Orakei Korako.. have you been to either before Lana?
Peter and Yen Yeah it was nice those trees are very cool to look at 😄. True, especially with all the new policies about children in RUclips. No I haven’t! Will be cool to see it from your guys vlog then 😆🙌🏼.
Hope you enjoy it! There's a redwoods tree grove in the hamurana walk and it was so cool seeing them right from the ground up too 😍😍
Peter and Yen Can’t wait time explore it someday! 🙌🏼
When you get older, you start liking things that you didn't used to like :P Oooo that pool is deep!!
😁 yeah even veges are ok now 😂
Hi Guys, You both are doing a very good job promoting your country or should say our country, I love the footage and Drone work, I worked in Waiotapu Forest in the early 70s the headquarters was situated on HW 38 and also the Camp Accommodation was behind the HQ i drove past there oh about 30 years ago on my way back home in the Tuhoe Nation The Urewera National Park a small place called Ruatahuna. there has been major changes to the landscape and Environment over the years.
Ok Keep up the good work ,be safe and look after each other.
Thank you Jonie! The series has been so much fun to put together. Road tripping around New Zealand is still the best 👌 ❤ thanks for sharing your experience working in waiotapu forest too, sounds like it would have been an amazing experience especially in the 70s
Rotorua is very close to nature amazing place love from india
New Zealand nature is just amazing 😊🤙
Thanks for the video, me and my partner were planning to go to Rotorua for a weekend getaway, but then Lv 3 happened again. Keep safe Peter and Yen
Glad you enjoyed it ☺️👍 Hopefully you guys will be able to go soon 🤞 take care and stay safe too 🌻💛
Love the redwood tree walk! The views from up there are stunning although I'm a bit afraid of heights so I would probably find going on the little bridges scary 😅
😁 yeah heights can be tough sometimes usually I'm all good till I look over the side then usually some level of anxiety kicks in
Saigon 60s was awesome food thanks for the tip 🍻
Yum! Miss that place 🤤
I used to love walking through the Redwoods growing up in Rotorua.
They're incredible trees 😍
@@PeterandYen And old.

Hi Barry 👋 unfortunately with new Zealand going back into lockdown doesn't help much either. Fingers crossed we do manage to get over this soon. Glad you've enjoyed the series and do hope that you'll be able to spend 2 months here soon would be great to catch up again ❤
The redwooda tree walk looked amazing! Im afraid of heights but id try this!
It might help overcoming the fear of heights because you feel very safe during the entire time you're doing this walk 😊
Beautiful I've been there with my friends 2 months ago and we went there at night time. I took heaps of photos everywhere other than that its a good experience
It's a really cool experience ay 😁👌 I wish we could've captured the night time better but I guess others will just have to go experience it for themselves too one day ☺️💙
Professor yen explaining why its green 😬😬😬🙌
😁 yen likes to read all the random info panels
The color of the geothermal pool is so unique. It looks like you guys are in Mars. You guys should totally do a snowboarding/skying episode. We're the same about not repeating restaurants unless they are very very good. :-) Delicious find.
😅 we had a ski trip planned to mt ruapehu last weekend but unfortunately new Zealand went under lockdown again.
Man !Look at the crowd here. Heaps of ppl gathering here & having lunch ….. they should sponsor u Peter& Yen
WOW! We did the exact same trip two weeks ago. What a coincidence!
😯 wow, good taste in picking activities 😁✌ rotorua is great right so much different stuff to do.
Hi Peter and Yen! I really enjoyed the past couple of vlogs of the North Island road trip! :D It was so nice that you could do both the day and night walk at Redwoods treewalk! It was such a difference between night and day! :)
When you guys were talking about this vlog's travel route and showed the map of the North Island I noticed that the North Island of New Zealand and the island Hokkaido in Japan, are quite similar in shape 😅
Thank you for the nice video!!
Hey Laura 👋 How's things over in Japan? ☺️ Thanks we're glad you enjoyed the videos! Yea quite a unique experience that treewalk ☺️👍🌳 we enjoyed both the day and night experience. Take care and stay safe 🤞🌻
