The best explanation I found so far FINALLY! Now I have to make my portfolio by today and send it. I know tomorrow is the last decision day for admissions and yet, most of my works are at home (I'm in hospital)... I'll have a loooong day...
@@ArmandoBash Luckily it went well, I had to ask a quick review to someone who just finished his BA in Illustration. Before send it, the same person suggested me to apply to both the 3y and the 3y + foundation course since from his own experience he got rejected just for one very tiny error, so I did like he said. He was right, they rejected the application in the 3y one (I had no mistakes in my portfolio, the problem were the "low" credits to get in) and got me in with no problems in the + foundation one. Now I successfully passed the foundation year and got in the 3D Animation course 😍🤩🤩
I never hear anyone ever talking about industrial design so it was nice to hear of someone else who knows the struggle, I'm just now finishing my 3 year in ID and I've just realized I'd rather do set design so I'm making my portfolio for that. Thank you for the clear breakdown
I say that all the time even tho I am in a portfolio course for my dream art school, getting Highers for Art and Design and willing to work for Blizzard. Some people say that all the time but who knows maybe you suck at drawing portraiture but amazing at landscapes, bad at props but good at visual effects and abilities. No one is bad at one thing an concludes it as a whole. Go for your dream job! You're a champ
I really loved your work! I'm an Industrial Design student in the states, and for my school, anyone was allowed to sign up for the 1st (out of 4) year studio. That's where we were taught how to draw like an Industrial Designer, and had mini projects assigned to exercise our creative skills. Then after the year was over, we compiled our best work (and a written essay) to submit to a jury to be scored. The top 36 scores then get to continue the program! btw, Jacob, I found your channel not too long ago, and I'm totally in love with your vlogs! Keep it up, and I'm so so so excited to see more :)
the best explanation i found so far, its really helpful for students who struggle with their portfolio. thank u soo much for sharing it, and ohhh myyy i really loved your work :))
This year I will start highschool and I want to make small steps for my portfolio. I asked lots of people but nobody really explained this good so thanks😁😁😁
i watched all of your videos in the last couple days and i have to say it was a really good time! i love the 20h study thing and i'll get to it myself since i love to learn new things. i'm getting into hand drawing and i look forward to your vid on perspective!! i've been working on 3D softwares, photoshop and indesign quite a bit the last 3 years and i really want to up my game! i really like that mix of hand + digital drawing that you did and your arts on the wood board are absolutely stunning! i look forward to see what you'll design in the futur, near and far. i think my favorite design is the knife. did you try it to see if it was as good as you thought? the handle might be too light?
i was talking about your final model but after thinking about it i figured that it was pretty easy to change the weight based on the material of the handle. i have a couple kitchen knives with the blade and the handle made out of the same material but the handle is a shell that contains a specific amount of sand to get the perfect weight wich i found very interesting!
@@mustafadiwan3276 its tough, well at least for me, with brainstorming ideas, idea development, yes we involve heavily with 3D software & also the toughest part is MODEL MAKING! its killing me.......but well its fun!
i was so eager to get into graphic design in the design university in my city, knowing damn well I'm jus an amateur illustrator, making art as a hobby. I'm even more skeptical in getting in now 😫I've been wanting to change programs (I'm currently in accounting, totally on the other side of the spectrum) but i feel like i just haven't done enough work yet to make a portfolio D; lol and my current art block is def not helping. I've got work to do
Hi Jacob! Thanks for sharing this video it's really helpful!! Is it okay to make a design portfolio based on traditional medium? I'm so worried about my portfolio. I'm good enough in drawing and painting I almost know how to work with different materials but I've never worked with computer stuff and do digital things. I've a lot of illustrations, logos, etc. But all of them done with traditional medium.
hi!...you're doing great with these videos..and it helped me . So I really really like to talk to you in person about the Design universities and how to get in there :D
Can I send portfolio online ? my university that I wanted to go It stay another country and I don't have much money to pay to go there but I want to go to that university because It's my dream .
I recommend finishing them up. Many design school replicate what design companies look for in a portfolio. So understandable, they want finish work. They want to know if you can start and complete a project. Otherwise why would be the point in hiring/accepting students.
how can I make strong resume to getting job in creative field ( concept artist or something like that).. lot's of things on internet , I'm confused. hope you will help :)
Hey Jacob! I am applying for a design master's! I have an engineering background with one project done in my final year. So, I have a sketchbook full of product concepts, logos, storyboards etc. How can I present them in my portfolio? Also my sketches are pretty amateur. Please help me out! PS: Can you make a video about prototyping for design portfolios, like how tos, what to do etc
V A N I L L A S A D B O I You have to prove that you are good enough fot the university, here in bohemia it is on every art school. Industrial / product design talent exams usualy have some sort of modeling and drawing stuff in them, it is different because you dont have to be good, you have to prove your talent and that it is worth for you to study there
sasa barták that sounds really long. I live in the UK and when I applied to do product design at uni, all I had to do was write a UCAS statement, which is basically a cover letter but more generic because I had to apply to five different unis using the same statement. After the statement, I went to interviews and I brought my portfolio, where I was asked why I wanted to do product design and who my favourite designer is.
sasa barták for my process I sent the statements off in October and I did most of the interviews in late January and early February. The unis took around a month to decide to offer me a place. I had to choose which university as my fist choice and my back up choice. It was so long and annoying.
i think your portfolio has too much text / i build my presentations/portfolios on /dont tell me show me/ rule but ye if you dont have much content it can help.
but i really like how you showed us the whole process and now it becomes the full circle and lot more people will understand what does it mean to study design and i love the way you present it it fraking fresh and awsome! am already studying design but if there in that time would be this epic set of videos from student point of view it would clear lot of missunderstandings of what am really going to study and my way would be more efective. best regards! stay strong.
Absolutely. The goal is to show them that you are creative. However, saying that, if you are wanting to get into product design it is more important that you show your CAD and drawing skills.
hi man, i love your videos very much as they give a sight on how designing school works. only one little remark, i think you have a bit too much mimiking going on, which give your videos a kind of cringy allure. besides that, awesome.
When u say "not expecting super skilled work" I still get anxiety because college portfolios on RUclips are all super skilled
i have send mine tomorrow, and im looking at these youtubers, and im like IM GONNA STUDY SOMETHING ELSE😂
