  • This week, we give our first impressions of the new Subaru Forester - does it maintain the legacy of the high utility (but low excitement) SUV? We also discuss the recent announcements of mobile map apps Waze and Google Maps debuting on Apple CarPlay, as well as Amazon's new Alexa Auto device. Lastly, we answer audience questions about our test results on the Acura RDX, why all dashboards are black these days, and which we would choose as a work truck: the Chevrolet Colorado or the Toyota Tacoma.

    I'm subbed to over 300 channels but a new Talking Cars episode is more often than not the first vid I click. Some next level commentary here; appreciate it. Anyway yeah it would be cool if there was an AWD Prius. I love my windy sea blue '15 elantra limited too much to trade for that AWD Prius but I'm sure a lot of people would trade their car, buy outright or lease.

    We just bought the 2018 XT Touring and love it. First road trip we’ve already drove from Fort Worth Texas to Leadville Colorado. I bought my mom the Forester 2.5 Premium and she loves that car but if there was no XT we probably wouldn’t consider buying the Forester and maybe got an Audi Q5 Quattro.

    Let's give Subaru a special award for offering high VISIBILITY across their range. Sad to see they deleted the manual Forester this year. On the question of how much Alexa is too much Alexa?
    Some people will only get enough Alexa when they are replaced by it . Maybe the film "Her" ought to be made mandatory viewing.

    At 17:45 you recommend the Outback, but for stop and go city driving the 2019 Forester has start/stop and would get better real world mileage. It has slightly more power and weighs less, and the smaller footprint makes it easier to park in the city.

    This might be both my age and line of work talking here, but whatever happened to just learning your way around town. The average person takes the exact same route to and from work on a daily basis and yet they're fumbling with either their phones or these Nav systems. I get it, when you're in a different city or area they might come in handy. As a passenger, my wife is always telling me "Google says to turn here or there" and I always find my knowledge of side streets and little shortcuts to be way better than what they recommend.

    Google maps and Waze are both on my Apple CarPlay and neither of them will except voice commands. Some people it works for, others it does not. What could be wrong? My car is a 2017 Kia Sportage SX. It pretty much renders those applications useless to me and make some potential unsafe.

    Prius with snow tires - don't climb a mountain. My neighbor owned one and the traction control would fail and the car would almost always silde nearly off the road (once it did -into the rocks on our 650 ft mountain). Now he owns a Volt and so far, no traction control failures and getting stuck climbing our mountain. He swears he will not get another Toyota Hybrid for this very reason.

    • @normt5463
      @normt5463 5 лет назад +1

      Sam S The Volt is a newer design and besides GM chassis and body control functions are next to none in refinementnt.

    • @Buc_Stops_Here
      @Buc_Stops_Here 5 лет назад

      I asked him about that since he has driven both - he said the Toyota was identical in the body control function. So I guess the Toyota's are next to none in refinement as well. I don't know - I never drove either.

      I had a Prius with snow tires and never got suck in my steep Boston driveway. Only problem was basically having to do a weird rain dance to disable the traction control because sometimes in the snow one actually needs the wheels to spin a bit.

    Subaru Boxer engines use old technology without new advances. Come on I've seen Outbacks with 42k burning oil and dealerships denying out of warranty help even though the warranty ended not to long ago.

  • @ohcanadaeh
    @ohcanadaeh 5 лет назад +2

    Why the issue of boxer engine oil burning was not discussed. Has that been resolved ? Good visibility alone won't cut it. It's a deal breaker for many buyers.

  • @ShenghongZhang
    @ShenghongZhang 5 лет назад

    The CVT on the subaru has serious safety issue. It won't go when you punch it until 0.5 - 1 sec later. If you want to get away from something or merging into a tight gap from stop n go, better think twice and drive it like driving a big van.

    Subaru Starlink is an utter dumpster fire of bugs and vulnerabilities. I have a 2017 Crosstrek, and it has had nothing but problems since day one. In my case, the first problem was that the phone would only connect 1 out of 10 times to the Bluetooth, Once it started connecting, I am now only getting track information on Bluetooth once in awhile, no real pattern to when it will show, and not show, also does not matter if its one USB or not. I have contacted Subaru about the problems as well, and in the case they say we have noted your problem, but do not give an ETA on when we will have a fix. My theory is that the fix will be released when these cars go out of warranty, and they can charge us for the patches. This is new car, with a head unit that should never have passed Quality Assurance with the shear number of bugs and problems it had.

    Have found Google maps much better than Apple maps but additionally, Google maps has better traffic coverage than the built in GPS systems, particularly GM systems. The traffic coverage that comes via SiriusXM is very poor and with Google maps available in Car Play means that I no longer have to put up with a mediocre/poor traffic coverage and secondly, my maps don’t have to be updated through the company.

      AWD only really matters in the winter. TN's winters aren't significant, except perhaps in the Smokies. Go to Colorado, New England, the Rust Belt, or the northwest US as a whole, and see what they think.

      I live in Texas and you’ll see them but go to Colorado and there’s 2 ( or more ) on every corner. Pretty popular in the north east . I’m a truck driver and I come to Tennessee every now and again and you don’t see them too much there indeed. Buy one for shits and giggles and you’ll be hooked especially if you get some snow where you live ( Winter tires are the best combo ).
