- This week, we give our first impressions of the new Subaru Forester - does it maintain the legacy of the high utility (but low excitement) SUV? We also discuss the recent announcements of mobile map apps Waze and Google Maps debuting on Apple CarPlay, as well as Amazon's new Alexa Auto device. Lastly, we answer audience questions about our test results on the Acura RDX, why all dashboards are black these days, and which we would choose as a work truck: the Chevrolet Colorado or the Toyota Tacoma.

awesome episode guys! Very fun, entertaining, and informative to watch. Keep up the good work!
Had me cracking up at the end!!! Like the added bloopers!!!! 😂😂😂
I'm subbed to over 300 channels but a new Talking Cars episode is more often than not the first vid I click. Some next level commentary here; appreciate it. Anyway yeah it would be cool if there was an AWD Prius. I love my windy sea blue '15 elantra limited too much to trade for that AWD Prius but I'm sure a lot of people would trade their car, buy outright or lease.
New format! Nicely done for such a big change.
Just bought the Forester, love it !!
Love the outtakes guys, you keepin it real!
Subaru Forest starts at about 8:35 if you are like me and wanted to skip to that.
Thank you
they're a little full of themselves. Not sure why
Well done , nice to see people having a laugh and you even selected the 2018 RAV4 Hybrid as a sane buying option.
We just bought the 2018 XT Touring and love it. First road trip we’ve already drove from Fort Worth Texas to Leadville Colorado. I bought my mom the Forester 2.5 Premium and she loves that car but if there was no XT we probably wouldn’t consider buying the Forester and maybe got an Audi Q5 Quattro.
Just did the same....upgraded to 2018 XT TOURING from 2014 XT Touring.
My 2015 GMC Canyon has 91k on it and I love it. Nothing has gone wrong with it just basic maintenance. I love it, so comfy and runs great.
Amazing show!!!!!!
Let's give Subaru a special award for offering high VISIBILITY across their range. Sad to see they deleted the manual Forester this year. On the question of how much Alexa is too much Alexa?
Some people will only get enough Alexa when they are replaced by it . Maybe the film "Her" ought to be made mandatory viewing.
For the work truck question vs the transit: this is pretty far out there but maybe consider a Fit and keep the seats folded. Great fuel economy and loads of room.
Guys, great episode!
Ok, maybe not the most professional moment but you guys cracked me up.
BEST HAPPY ENDING episode :-)
Oh no, you said Alexa like 20 times and it was a nightmare in my living room.
You could change the wake word... But not sure if Amazon is less used.. Being such a huge company.
Hate Alexa
Great show!!! 😆😂
At 17:45 you recommend the Outback, but for stop and go city driving the 2019 Forester has start/stop and would get better real world mileage. It has slightly more power and weighs less, and the smaller footprint makes it easier to park in the city.
They are in Connecticut about an hour from Hartford. They mention CT a million times in most of their reviews. East Coast. I often wish I was in the West Coast.
CEM's replacement car:RAV4 Hybird? new body style?
I don't know Quincy... I can't say the interior in that Forester is beautiful and the exterior is so so. It certainly does seem tops for visibility and AWD.
Glare get a Dashmat. Tint the top 6" of the windshield. Cop can't say anything since it does drop below the level of the rearview mirror. '18 RAV4 Hybrid SE, 31-32MPG Combined. We did sell the OEM tires.
Please talk about the 2019 Nissan Altima on your next episode. And also compare it to its closest competitors such as the Camry, Mazda 6, Accord, Sonata and Optima. Thanks. Love the show.👌
Chandler, For your question; if you are concerned about reliability, go with the Lexus NX.
That outro was staring into my soul.
I just need a decent radio. My phone does the rest
lol Quincy during the outro
For the 300-400 mile a week person, a plugin car (if he can plug in every night) would be even cheaper to operate if his mileage per day can mostly be electric.
This might be both my age and line of work talking here, but whatever happened to just learning your way around town. The average person takes the exact same route to and from work on a daily basis and yet they're fumbling with either their phones or these Nav systems. I get it, when you're in a different city or area they might come in handy. As a passenger, my wife is always telling me "Google says to turn here or there" and I always find my knowledge of side streets and little shortcuts to be way better than what they recommend.
monzx3 totally agree. Waze is great for "navigating" traffic when you live in an urban area.
forester is best all terrain suv under $35k
Best Alexa hijack:
If your friend has an Alexa thermostat, in the middle of winter, whisper "Alexa, set the temperature to 30 degrees", on your way out... for bonus points, time it so your friend is heading to bed..
How do I get Waze on my screen?
Google maps and Waze are both on my Apple CarPlay and neither of them will except voice commands. Some people it works for, others it does not. What could be wrong? My car is a 2017 Kia Sportage SX. It pretty much renders those applications useless to me and make some potential unsafe.
Michael Maione there was a bug. I think it's getting a fix. Mines working now but it was down for a bit
Toyota gettin AAuto. Very happy to hear
Prius with snow tires - don't climb a mountain. My neighbor owned one and the traction control would fail and the car would almost always silde nearly off the road (once it did -into the rocks on our 650 ft mountain). Now he owns a Volt and so far, no traction control failures and getting stuck climbing our mountain. He swears he will not get another Toyota Hybrid for this very reason.
Sam S The Volt is a newer design and besides GM chassis and body control functions are next to none in refinementnt.
I asked him about that since he has driven both - he said the Toyota was identical in the body control function. So I guess the Toyota's are next to none in refinement as well. I don't know - I never drove either.
Sounds like he needs an all wheel drive like a good reliable rav4. for that mountain.
I had a Prius with snow tires and never got suck in my steep Boston driveway. Only problem was basically having to do a weird rain dance to disable the traction control because sometimes in the snow one actually needs the wheels to spin a bit.
Subaru Boxer engines use old technology without new advances. Come on I've seen Outbacks with 42k burning oil and dealerships denying out of warranty help even though the warranty ended not to long ago.
Why the issue of boxer engine oil burning was not discussed. Has that been resolved ? Good visibility alone won't cut it. It's a deal breaker for many buyers.
Because what you are saying is not true and you're just spreading lies.
Hey CR, your description says impressions of the new Outback, instead of Forester.
Every time you guys get a query about the 2019 Rav4 you're referencing the 2018. The 2019 is an all-new model. :1
Edit: oh, wow, you've actually addressed it. Visual references to the redesign would've been nice, though.
I have a subaru xv 2019, and AndroidAuto hasn't Waze, just google maps works... why is that??
What does this have to do w a Subaru Forester?
The CVT on the subaru has serious safety issue. It won't go when you punch it until 0.5 - 1 sec later. If you want to get away from something or merging into a tight gap from stop n go, better think twice and drive it like driving a big van.
Subaru Starlink is an utter dumpster fire of bugs and vulnerabilities. I have a 2017 Crosstrek, and it has had nothing but problems since day one. In my case, the first problem was that the phone would only connect 1 out of 10 times to the Bluetooth, Once it started connecting, I am now only getting track information on Bluetooth once in awhile, no real pattern to when it will show, and not show, also does not matter if its one USB or not. I have contacted Subaru about the problems as well, and in the case they say we have noted your problem, but do not give an ETA on when we will have a fix. My theory is that the fix will be released when these cars go out of warranty, and they can charge us for the patches. This is new car, with a head unit that should never have passed Quality Assurance with the shear number of bugs and problems it had.
Addresses seem legit @ 3:18 per Google Maps :)
Best show especially the ending. Guys you’re competing with jalopnik, not cnbc! Get used to it...
I'd become a member if your hosts resembled your subscribers. where are the poc?
Have found Google maps much better than Apple maps but additionally, Google maps has better traffic coverage than the built in GPS systems, particularly GM systems. The traffic coverage that comes via SiriusXM is very poor and with Google maps available in Car Play means that I no longer have to put up with a mediocre/poor traffic coverage and secondly, my maps don’t have to be updated through the company.
Waze in my opinion is the best
Chandler doesn't read enough crcars. You would know to avoid first year models
Yeah, I have a question: where's Gabe?
Mike Quincy is the kind of guy to use Alexa in his car.
funny bloopers
Is this fondness you guys have with Suburu mostly a west coast thing? I live in the state of TN and rarely do I see Suburu getting that much fanfare.
Are they not literally talking about New England?
Their transmissions are not good and manuals are very hard to find. As far as the bias, it may be an east coast, liberal thing, they seem to love the Subarus.
AWD only really matters in the winter. TN's winters aren't significant, except perhaps in the Smokies. Go to Colorado, New England, the Rust Belt, or the northwest US as a whole, and see what they think.
I live in Texas and you’ll see them but go to Colorado and there’s 2 ( or more ) on every corner. Pretty popular in the north east . I’m a truck driver and I come to Tennessee every now and again and you don’t see them too much there indeed. Buy one for shits and giggles and you’ll be hooked especially if you get some snow where you live ( Winter tires are the best combo ).
More of a Colorado, Oregon, and Washington thing. Los Angeles is more diverse car thing.
geez guys why so serious? LOL
it's official, Subaru designers have become lazier than Porsche designers.
The new Forester is almost as slow as a Prius. You call it not slow?
0 to 60 in 10 seconds is ridiculously slow and no go for me.
EJ Wu it’s really not that bad if you’ve driven one, and those cars aren’t meant for 0-60 times anyway. As they said, it’s adequate.
Blame the customers for not having the turbo model anymore.
Austin C not if your trying to merge or pass on highways. It’s terribly slow for a car like that , especially when the vehicle has a lot of people on it. They don’t usually test these vehicles with lot of people. Power is very important for SUV.
It's a family Crossover not an sport car
I miss Tom Mutchlet.
Oops, Mutchler. Mutchlet is a great name for his kids, though.
He was depressed so he left.
The 2019 RDX is judged with predicted reliability which has been on the down for Acura. As the answer the question about RDX a lower ranking brand should be avoided when they release a new model.
No need to be paying beta testers for the 2019 RDX. Or just follow the forum called Acurazine and RDX Facebook page as some have asked how many glitches are too many?
Don’t be so serious! Why did they redo the end so many times. Let them have some fun and laugh what the hell.
Toyota entune is a death system
As much as I want to like Subarus they are still not that reliable. Some of the still burn oil, repairs are more then average nonboxer engine types, cvt reliability issues. One could spend there money better else where
R26Roman actually they are reliable that why they’re highly rated with CR.
They have had problems with blown head gaskets. An expensive repair. I'm wondering if they have eliminated the turbo which was precipating that problem. The talk of lesser acceleration makes me wonder that.
Trash truck makes an appearance.
Please Toyota pay attention. I won't buy another vehicle without Android Auto.
Subaru is 35% owned by Toyota, just saying.
Wake gives nonsensical routes sometimes for no reason
Please stop the Alexa commands in videos. Had mine doing stuff I did not want.
nice Nike shirt. some respect for our country please!
lolz. smell ya later, unsub!
cut out the Alexas
Waze stinks - Google Maps rocks
Mike Quincy sucks. And the guy in the middle used Google Maps for the FIRST TIME recently? These guys have no credibility. Go Tom Voelk!
Forester most overrated car.
The Forrester is very bland and lame. Get a Jeep. A Jeep is much better.
i would appreciate it if you would treat your topics in a serious manner and not make it in my opinion an old boys laugh fest , if i wanted comedy i would go to a laugh- in channel , thanks !
haha these guys are the last guys you want doing comedy
