Donnie Yen is no joke, this man has studied so many forms and he's applied them together in such an entertaining way that he's set the bar very high for martial arts cinema. In Flashpoint for example, he demonstrates kickboxing, jiu jitsu and parkour ALL in a single scene. Then you watch him perform Wing Chun in Ip Man, and he's able to become a completely different person (I seriously had to check whether it was the same actor).
Even in movies where he wasn't the director, he's always had the mentality of a director so he always has perfection in mind, able to determine what movements look good on screen at certain camera angles. Just watch him in the Behind the Scenes of the knife vs baton fight scene of SPL.

He was already featured in mainstream American action movies. The most obvious one I can think of is "Blade" (1 or 2), starring Wesley Snipes. I'm pretty sure there are others though.

i hated Donnie Yen's Ip Man phase. Though he, himself did an awesome job, the movies were way too pro-Chinese. Wing Chun is great in theory, but has failed over and over again when pitted against other styles. Also the Ip Man stories were far too focused on making China the moral country, and all the foreigners deserving of a beatdown.
how would you know that Wing Chun has failed over and over again when pitted against other styles?
the first few UFC's demonstrated it. Also even before UFC, there were many demonstrations of wing chun vs karate, and muay thai in the 1960s, where a well known wing chun practitioner, ( name is not coming to mind right now), lost to other styles repeatedly.. Bruce Lee started on Wing Chun, but only kept its theories, forsaking most of its actual techniques. It's always the same lessons: the Wing Chun guys usually get outflanked, outfootworked, and overpowered. They have trouble dealing with attacks that come outside the centerline, and their multiple strikes are trumped by a single hard deadly strike.
notf noio I hope you know that multiple striking aka chain punching features only in Ip Man's legacy winchun? Another thing is that there is no Ip Man's winchun as such but rather a plethora of styles his disciples came to develop in different ways. The continental winchun and its Vietnamese counterpart are strikingly different.
alright i hope that the other styles are more effective. The handwork that i've seen in most Wing Chun styles are ineffective against a trained puncher. Chi Sao, Chi Na, are effective against slower, telegraphic strikers, so possibly useful against the untrained hooligan, but typically against a trained boxer, the punches are too fast and come at unpredictable angles to react to.
notf noio In other branches of Wing Chun Chi Sao has very few things to do with combat application per se -- that is a training technique used to train certain qualities and NOT a fighting method. Moreover, it's not an exclusive feature of Wing Chun as it is encountered in a number of other traditional styles from China. I knew a guy who trained in non-Hongkong Wing Chun and pretty much devastated several boxers during a "friendly spar". One of those had his elbow broken, others suffered some smaller injuries.

I like DOnnie Yen but I feel like his movies use too much wire work, one reason I like Bruce Lee's movies is cause of it's practical choreography
+Bre Fujimoto You're right, most of Donnie's moves aren't practical at all in a real fight situation. I think most people know that, but they sure look great in a movie. The intensity and speed of his moves just look so good in any fast-paced action sequence. In the end, with these martial art movies, it's all about style. It's not what moves you do, it's how you execute the moves.
