An MJD video without any issues? Impossible. You have outdone yourself, Michael.
The issue is the laptop is now running Windows Me. /s lol
Impossible.
Maybe the video is incomplete.
~~ Obi-Won
I like to imagine Michael as an exaggeratedly obese unbathed neckbeard, it really spices up the experience
@@windowsxseven Why?
@@windowsxseven i imagine him as a completely normal, casual looking guy
Wow, Luna and Clouds was a combination I never knew I needed! 😍
Me either. It looks pretty!
"To uninstall an operating system, you should uninstall an uninstaller for it."
- Microsoft, 2001
The unbranded 'Microsoft Windows' logo also used to appear when XP was going into hibernation mode.
Or shutting down when you're using AT instead of ATX PSU, with the infamous:
"It is now safe to turn off your computer"
This was a cool video. Brings back a lot of good memories. I remember as a kid starting out with Windows ME then later upgrading to XP in the mid 2000s.
I love how the windows xp uninstaller is just like uninstalling any other program (same ctrl panel uninstaller layout). Imagine if a curious user uninstalled xp and went back to their old os, that'd be funny!
I love you you're my favourite os
I actually did it back in the time on my grandpa’s pc
yeah it's funny
@@wohao_gaster7434 Windows 7 and XP were the shit
... i told ya to downgrade windows 10 to windows 1.0
Hey Michael, with the theory behind the uninstall boot screen, it is the same one as the upgrade screen taken from the setup OS (which was first used in a Server 2003 beta). By default, that screen is disabled on clean installs due to the /NOGUIBOOT parameter used in txtsetup.sif. In addition, the uninstall progress screen is actually same setup program as normal setup but uses a bunch of 16-color bitmaps (the setup is incapable of producing 256 colours or above).
woah, its the actual martin nobel
hey :))
I guess we all like something in common:)
I was gonna say I think I remember seeing a grey progress bar in Windows Server 2003
I remember doing this, i had to. I needed MS-DOS for some things that were important
Important things like what?
Couldn’t you use DOSBOX or something?
@@kooldogkid149 I don't think DosBox existed back then.. DosBox was only made when Vista 64 bit version completely broke DOS Applications due to removable of 16-bit support (NTVDM).
why are people replying to this like downgrading to win me is one of the seven deadly sins
@@tamoghnapal6619 but I remember LGR using it in 2009 for a vid on an XP 32-Bit Machine tho.
There's another instance of the low color setup mode and it's also the same for that boot screen.
I believe it also happens when upgrading from Win9x to XP
2:22 From a technical point of view, when the system boots into text mode setup (the part before graphical setup. In this case, it's just a bitmap overlapping the text), at that point the OS can't check for the SKU. Because of this, it just displays a neutral boot bitmap without SKU details or anything
adding to this, the XP bootscreens don't actually have different bitmaps for each edition, there is only this one neutral bitmap and then NT init writes the SKU text on top of it.

@FasdusWisdom ?
Great video Michael! Definetly somthing like was done in the past. I was wondering since Windows 11 has been out pretty recently you can do a history of the Winows 11 development. Something that hasn't been done for quite sometime. I liked the other Windows development histories you've done!
Oh man, I wished I had this option back in the day... I had a laptop with Windows ME back in the early 00s, and after getting thoroughly sick of ME's antics I upgraded it to Windows 2K... a bad move, as that computer was just not powerful enough for that OS. It worked, but it was really sluggish to do pretty much anything. But unfortunately 2K didn't have this downgrade feature, and during the upgrade it had helpfully converted my HDD from FAT to NTFS and there was no reverse conversion process available. So I was kinda stuck unless I wanted to wipe my HDD and start from scratch... and given I also didn't have a CD burner to back up everything, I was stuck with that very slow computer for like a year or two before I managed to borrow a friend's CD burner to back everything up... and then I "upgraded" to Debian, because I was rather cheesed off at Windows by that point.
Heh, I just left a pretty similar comment. The details are different but the sentiment is the same… and we both wanted to go back to ME due to being less laggy!
The only time I actually uninstalled Windows was when I installed Windows 10 on my Windows 7 computer via windows update. The computer didn't performed well, WiFi didn't worked properly, few drivers had issues and so on. Then I saw the uninstall in the add/remove programs and I was happy to get rid of that windows 10 thing.
I actually saw this feature when upgrading Windows and some times when upgrading or installing a fresh copy, the installer said that if you do install, you would not be able to uninstall and revert to previous OS.
You can also downgrade from Windows 95 to Windows 3.1x, but only if the disk geometry matches and you aren't using disk compression. If the disk geometry doesn't match, you'll end up with a bunch of corrupted files and you won't be able to boot.
Woah, an MJD video where nothing went wrong? Impossible! Jokes aside, awesome video! I've definitely done my fair share of upgrades over the years, but not once have I ever attempted to downgrade back to the previous OS, so that was interesting to see, and...insanely fast, too! Way faster than I thought it would have taken.
Windews XP is the best Windows!!! Im using 7 rn because of compatibility but 7 is second best! Keep up the good work it's entertaining and it's making me happy in my time with cancer. I'm at the hospital right now and you're videos are helping me going through all this! continue!
Oh, this seems immensely fun. I didn't know that was a thing you could do.
bi flag logo epic
Same. I didn't knew it was possible to revert to a previous system without reinstalling it-
Is this the man made hole of degeneracy
That gray boot screen load bar feels uncanny
I love how this is going from arguably the best Windows of all time to arguably the worst Windows of all time.
Imo, Vista is the best Windows of all time.
The problem really were Internet Explorer 5.0 which one could install on windows 95 and the computer went totally ME ,crashes, freezes ,visal artifacts with the ui -IE 5.5 was stable
the best windows of all time is Windows 12 for sure
Nah for me, Windows 7 was when it hit its peak
@@hercegmaniac1820 Vista had a great UI. It was just too slow and ahead of its time.
The ultimate Micheal MJD April Fools video, everything goes exactly as planned.
...Okay, the video was uploaded a few days before April Fools but the joke still works.
The setup/uninstall screen you see is a bunch of bitmap embedded as resources in usetup.exe (or smss.exe in normally text-mode setup stage)
There's a trick to fallback to text-mode. To do this, when upgrading to XP, remove the disc after 9x setup and during reboot
In Traditional Chinese version, the fallback text-mode one isn't the blue background as normally do
"I have a nice laid back video"
No, Michael. You just jinx'ed it right there!
I tried Windows 98 or ME, maybe both on my D600, and the only problem I had is that the Radeon 9000 drivers for 9X just never got very good before they stopped making new 9x drivers in early 2004.
I managed to find some ok ones at one point, mine runs stable enough.
I saw you uploaded a new video, so I made my breakfast, made a cup of tea, beamed RUclips to my TV and got comfy, only to realize the video is only 4 minutes long instead of the usual 20 minutes.
Well played, enjoyed the video nonetheless
This is already an MJD classic.
For the upgrade part, like Martin Nobel said, you have to upgrade to XP from 98 or ME in order to have the ability to uninstall, and upgrading from 2000 will not work
You have made a good decision doing this. It really feels like going back in time.
I remember this, I installed XP on the family computer but the PC would stutter more and some of the games and programs would not work. My father got someone from IT and he installed a fresh copy of Win 2000, I could have just uninstalled it. Now 2000 was also NT based, the games did not work but those programs did.
I did this for my now 5 year old. Wanted something for him to play old dos based games like The Incredible Machine & math mountain etc. that was a little more intuitive to operate than running & troubleshooting stuff from dosbox, and I wanted the spiffy desktop themes too. he just clicks his desktop shortcuts and goes.
Wiped my old Dell Dimension tower but I dont remember how I got ME on without a boot floppy.
did something with portable linux on a USB drive or something. I dont remember what. I dont think the B110 has UEFI iirc.
Still works and its ludicrously fast on a 2.4 celeron with 1gb ram, did kernelEX and whatnot. finding sound card drivers was definitely the worst part.
I remember the XP boot screen used to say Professional (or the edition you had). I liked that but then the changed it in later versions of XP. I don't use XP any more but I did like that. I know there are ways to change the boot screen but I just never bothered to try it, messing with a thing like that might cause more trouble than it is worth if done wrong.
Used to say it until SP2 was installed when it became generic. At the same time they removed the copyright date from it too.
Thanks for this! I've been stuck on Windows XP for 20 years.
mjd i love your videos. im pretty sure ive watched almost every one. i always watch your vids before i go to bed
I know this may take a bit of time. But is it possible to do a video downgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 1.0?
Really enjoyed seeing the downgrade for some reason, as much as XP is my favourite operating system
So, about the "Windows" bootscreen:
1. It's actually very commonly seen during Restart 1 of Setup, though I forget if it's during clean installs or upgrade installs
2. It's actually Windows XP's bootscreen (but with the MJD-mentioned Server-coloured marquee progressbar), BUT it doesn't say XP because... it actually does say XP, but Microsoft literally hardcoded a stupid (for bootscreen modders, anyway) black rectangle over the XP part of the bootscreen texture, as made obvious by modding the bootscreen texture and checking it under THIS bootmode (think it's nogui boot).
Probably upgrades, because I’ve never seen that "Windows" screen during clean installs (as for upgrades, I’ve never done XP upgrades)
lol what a way to use only one boot bitmap eh? “Ah we’ll just put a rectangle over the XP part”
I loved Windows ME when i was younger lol. Thank you for upload! 🙂
This can't be one of your videos, IT WORKED!!!!!!!
Wow that was cool, I wish I was older back when 98 and XP on their glory days
Trivia: The Windows XP uninstall screen is actually taken from ntoskrnl.exe, and it doesn't happen in user mode since it's permanently in low color and there's no mouse pointer.
Moreover, behind this "uninstall screen" or "upgrade screen" is actually a text-based installer, which will come up if error occurs during upgrade or downgrade.
The easiest way to get it is upgrade Windows 9x to Windows CTAC))))))))
A while ago I got a thinkpad T43 without realising there were no 98/ME drivers for it. It was the first thinkpad to not support 9x OS's (and the last one to be made by ibm)
Man I needed this tutorial, I have an old pc that just wouldn't install Win ME from the cd
I feel bad for the people who thought Me was the latest Windows with DOS Mode and upgrading/downgrading to it would bring DOS Mode back.
I want to see a Windows 11 -> Windows 1.0 downgrade sequence video 🙃 Can we carry over any settings between down grade versions?
You should do a video on 3DS homebrew like you did for the Wii
An MJD video where everything goes smoothly? Something is very wrong here!
Oh dang. I needed this back in the day but the person who helped me upgrade (the computer admin at my school after hours - she even let me have their education XP license key which was probably technically disallowed) insisted on a format and install as “the right way”.
I didn’t need it for real mode DOS but just because XP was laggy af on that computer, especially when using ethernet networking, so I stopped using that PC. And I’d lost my install of Office 2000 or whatever it was to boot (which I’d made a bunch of animations in PowerPoint on).
But ME ran just fine (and that’s what I had before we’d upgraded). If she’d just done an upgrade the process would’ve taken half the time AND I could’ve undone it at my leisure. Dang
I may be mistaken, but I don't think volume installation media for XP has the upgrade option.
finally, an mjd video where nothing goes wrong
This video seems to be fun and very quick video, but I like Windows XP
Idk why his content is so fun!
Nice video Micheal!
Can you please make a part 2 to “The Beginner's Guide to Wii Homebrewing/
Softmodding” on how to get roms and the other things you can do on the homebrew channel?
Man, back when Microsoft actually cared about its users. That was the simplest thing I've seen in my life.
Downgrading isn't something that got worse over time though, except maybe for the questions you have to respond
I remember back in 98 buying a new machine for the office and we were using tape backup and windows 98 didn't work well with the software and there was no upgrade version of the software, so I downgraded the machine.
Wiped the drive and loaded the windows 95 OEM and then the tape software and restored the backup overwriting the 95 install I had to do to get to be able to install the tape software and then restore the backup
My boss was not happy about using the older OS but I told him there was no alternative
He always wants to be with the newest OS and hardware
This video is bring me back memory of my childhood
This is amazing Mic. Congrats,
Now do a downgrade saga
I think if you were to order a Dell Latitude D610 in 2004, you could’ve opted for Windows 2000 instead of XP. Not quite Windows ME, but also not Windows XP.
Huh...a short video, but I never knew about this.
Thanks!
Awesome video, Michael!
I’m only 11 and I’m very interested in computers and old os es like windows me and vista so I been using virtual machines and that’s why I watch your videos cuz they make me wanna do it more and when I get a job I will buy stuff like this and do things like u
THE SECOND I READ THE TITLE MY HEAD JUST SCREAMED THAT "NOOOOOOO" MEME MICHAEL WHY
These are the videos i expect to see in 2022
this was beautiful I enjoyed this, and watched it from a Mac xD
Awe, I was hoping this would be a longer video.
Hi Michael! I hope you have a great week! :)
microsoft removed the downgrade option on windows vista, 7 and 8
it was only added back in windows 10
Awesome!! Pretty cool to know
Good old "winver", I am still using that in Win10, I learned it on Win 3.1
Awesome video! Could you try Windows Vista with the extended kernel patch? There's been released an ISO with everything preinstalled and patched.
All jokes aside, my installation was clean but I still downgraded to ME until that particular computer died. Kids these days might not remember but early versions of XP were borderline unusable, at least on the non-certified PCs (even those meeting the requirements). ME also had problems on older PCs, but thrived on those made during its lifetime.
I think only Vista and maybe 8 were sluggish on current era PCs.
finally, a -10 minutes video
I'm sure this was called Downgrading [...] to Windows 2000 when I got notified a couple of days ago! Was a previous version of the video removed, then this one put up instead?
Evil Michael MJD be like: but everything goes smooth.
Today I found a Windows XP SP2 upgrade disc in my storage room. Nice.
I had that thing on a Pentium 2 pc.. I remember blue screens
So thanks for uploading today
Adding THIS video to our Facebook Windows Millennium Edition Group
Jesus, you made 3 videos in one week! How can you do that!? I manage to make only one every month! Good Job!!!!!!!!!!
I didn’t know the dell latitude d610 supports windows me coz there were no official drivers made for this OS.
Windows Server 2003 also had the grey loading bar on the boot screen if i can recall
“No.., MJ how could you… NOOOO-“-Windows XP’s final words
Ok Michael be honest, how many cuts did you make to make the video seem faultless? I can’t imagine even a downgrade would go smoothly. Lol.
Yoo, I've always wanted to do this but windows wouldn't let me so this is really cool!
Hopefully the first time anyone actually did this. It's kind of like replacing a passenger airplane with the Hindenberg.
2:12 the splash screen looks kind of depressed that you're uninstalling xp, ngl
IDK why everyone else had such hate for ME, but for me, I had a better experience with ME than I ever did with 95/98/98se. I personally love ME the most between XP, ME, and Win7
When I first saw the thumbnail I was like Why in the world would you do that 😂
Huh. Never knew this feature existed since XP. Windows 10 and 11 had this option too
New series of downgrading windows version
Do the revisiting video of the Chrome OS Flex and now it's working ok no black screen on my old laptop with AMD E1 2100 APU
Hey MJD, I am once again asking you to Setup a Quake server on the Linux PlayStation.
I'm watching this, and commenting this FROM Windows XP. (With Mypal, of course.)
I'm replying this from my phone.
Cool!
Can you try doing a Windows downgrade saga?
Hi Mike your video is awesome. Thank you
You should change this tile to: How to Downgrade Windows XP to Windows ME
Can you do a downgrade chain from Windows XP down to MS-DOS 5.00 next?
as always i like the videos you make but is there anyway to download windows 7 again?
Nice one, though it seems to have been published a few days early.
Are documents and programs installed after the upgrade preserved or does this work like an image of the disk before installing xp? Does it leave any traces of xp related files?
yes you could see a "Documents and Settings" folder for instance
The uninstaller said programs installed on XP may or may not persist, but documents created on XP definitely would persist :)
I've made an upgrade of wME on my Toshiba Satellite Pro 470CDT (AFAIR it was Pentium 233 MMX, 64MB RAM) to XP which worked awfully slow and tried to make a downgrade... Never succeeded. I've tried that few times some time later and it never worked...
i enjoy this Dellgrading
