He did not play the Op.10 No.1 in that case. He played an improvisation over the Op.10 No.1. Both are completely different things and you, or anyone else, can not say that he played 'that' piece as the moment you intentionally deviate from a piece, it no longer remains that piece. It becomes something else which is your own work and can easily get you disqualified from almost all competitive venues. Believe it or not, classical community scorns at such practices until and unless the performer declares in advance that he is going to improvise over the said score and not just spontaneously ruin the expectations of a listener.
I know this is a bit late, but if you listen to all his passages, his emphasis was on the arpeggios more so than the left hand. Is that a correct interpretation? Meh. To each his own I'd say. Besides, it's not as if the left hand was that weak, it's just that much more focus was placed on the running notes in the right.
