FF7 Rebirth is my favorite game of this year. I put in 140+ hours, and the vast majority of those hours were 100% quality. I just....man, I just wish that ending was different.

I just finished the final boss on my first playthrough. It took 174 hours of game time. I did all the sidequests, mini-games, and exploration I could along the way. The only thing I left incomplete before heading to the final area was the last proto relic. I'm pretty sure based on those recommended levels that it is intended for post game, so I'll be doing that next. I wouldn't say its a perfect game, though I loved the story part of the game and the music a hell of a lot. However, I was constantly dragged down by the mini games with terrible controls, the combat challenges with vague descriptions of what to do that only lead to frustration, and the the fact that the game is simply far too long. Yes, its a much more manageable game if you skip the exploration and the mini games, and the sidequests, but that's half of the game. So while the pacing works if you skip those things, you end up missing half of what makes the game what it is. There are also a handful of story moments that really don't make any sense and never get addressed, but I'll leave those alone for spoiler reasons.
Overall, when the game is good, its great, but when it has issues, its terribly frustrating to the point of it not being fun. I got so frustrated with mini games and VR/Musclehead challenges on numerous occasions that I had to stop playing or constantly swear at the screen

I've been playing the game since launch day and am about to start Chapter 12. I'm curious what the "certain change that takes place regarding one of the main characters" is referring to (either I haven't got there yet or didn't pick up on it). What Chapter does this change happen in?

I’m in the middle of the REMAKE game right now. I have this to say. I keep forgetting to "analyze" enemies. I pretty much remember to try to stager every unique enemy now. But now I have two things to try to remember before I finish them off. Annoyingly this really takes me out of my battle rhythm as I have to be careful not to kill things too quickly before I do these two things first now. I'm not a fan of this design for unlocking side quests. But I'm going to try.

My review of the game is simple. It's like a great soup, with tiny chunks of turds sprinkled in that give me an overall negative experience. I generally like completing games, at least to enjoy all the content. I 100% platinumed Remake, and after, I really felt it was a grind and that the juice was not worth the squeeze; it was enjoyable to play through on story mode, but to get 100% was a grinding slog that violated the number 1 rule of ANY game design. IT NEEDS TO BE FUN.
Challenge is all great and dandy, BUT it ought to come in the primary gameplay that the player purchased the game for. The battle system and exploration in FF7 Rebirth are excellent. - I don't hate everything about the game, a lot of it is very good.
What is awful are the portions of the story gated by having to play frustrating minigames that are watered down, inferior versions of other games, and NOT FUN. They also resort to double dipping. Playing Rocket Leauge with Red XIII for the second time was a SLOG. It's an inferior version of the game it's similar to as well.
Many of these minigames are the kind where after you beat them, you never want to see it again. That's a replay factor of -10. I don't feel like playing Queen's Blood, I'm not into card games, but it's a requirement on the boat, just as the boxing crap is at the Gold Saucer. Did I feel accomplished after either? Nope. Because they took me out of the game that I wanted to play for longer than I cared for.
It's not a "skill issue", as I am able to 100% them. I even did it on the Chocobo gliding minigame, but after, again, the juice wasn't worth the squeeze. That god-awful boxing game gates the ribbon, but it's NOT fun to slog through. If these minigames only gated achievements and not important gear like that, OR story progression, then I'd be bothered a lot less by it. If you want the best stuff, then you are forced to play games that aren't fun and that aren't what you expected when you paid for the game. I'm the kind of person who will force myself to do things I hate for something I want, but a lot of gamers are not and will be very put off, feeling they aren't good at something they like. They no longer like it after.
Right now, a lot of people are avoiding this game because of the gating content of those minigames. They have come to expect the slogfest from Square Enix. Again, they ought to not be necessary for story progression OR important gear. I doubt anyone would have complained if the only way to get a ribbon was morphing a super-boss version of Marlboro, OR, it was a reward for careful exploration like in the original game in the Temple of the Ancients.
All signs are that this game isn't underperforming, and the digital download date is now showing that along with physical in Japan and the UK. Everyone I've talked to avoiding this has to complaints. 1. The Story changes, and 2. The minigames gating taking their time away from what they want to be playing. At this point, it'd be hard to patch and change around story cutscenes, that ship has sailed, and I'm willing to forgive a game if it is fun. Heck, I'm even willing to grind through the minigames, but I do NOT enjoy them. I tolerate them only enough to get through them.
Square could at least patch the game to make the QB tournament optional, as well as the boxing game at the start of Gold Saucer, and add secondary methods to get the same gear by getting good at the core game. Those minigames ruin the fun of the main core gameplay for a lot of people, and make no mistake, a lot of people are not buying it for that reason alone. They are the sprinkles of pre-digested waste in what would otherwise be a great soup.

Well, you got to admit that at least the combat in the game and the vast open world are awesome. The characterizations of the cast are spot on. Don't let a few minigames ruin it for you Bro.

@@billdunn4573 Re-read my long post. I'm not letting it stop me from playing, but I'm also not going to be an elitist gamer who laughs at those who are frustrated by mini games that aren't the core game, which frustrate them. Can you see how SE games getting a reputation for that can eventually hurt sales in a drastic way? I want this game to succeed financially and get SE to invest that into a 3rd installment and make it incredible. That means I have to be willing to accept when someone points out a major flaw, especially if it's one that could be patched. Now, I'm not saying you're doing this, but lots of gamers will argue with anyone who points out such a flaw, pretending a game is perfect in every way when it's struggling in sales. That actually isn't helping. I was unable to convince anyone else to buy the game and just slog through the minigames, and I realize that making them optional in a patch, in a way that they don't gate anything but an achievement, would go a long way. I'd like more people to realize the good portions of this game too.

I thought temple of the ancients was abit of a slog, but it also had some really exciting moments after you made it through those initial parts. I didn't have an issue with the ending per say, just the way it was delivered. I'm well acquainted with the OG game so although still very confused i understood more or less what was happening. I felt sorry watching new players witness the ending and were just left scratching theirs heads in bewilderment. There's no reason it needed to be that convoluted.
