After rewatching the series, Zhen Huan was very sincere towards Lingrong. It was Lingrong’s maid and Huanbi who did things that created misunderstandings between the two.
lingrong's maid was a spy for the empress! in the beginning after the empress and huafei sent the new girls gifts, lingrong's maid pushed for her to wear the jewelry gifted by the empress. and when the empress found the vodoo doll, lingrong accused the maid of betraying her at first but the maid defended herself by saying she wasn't the one who tidied the bed (even tho lingrong never said the empress found the doll in the bed!)
I really love how Lingrong's success and failure were both caused by Zhen Huan giving flowers: her successful selection as a concubine was because of a flower hairpin given to her by Zhen Huan, while her miscarriage was caused by contaminated flowers sent to her by Zhen Huan. I also really love how they played the song "采莲" during Lingrong's death --- this was the same song the Empress had someone teach Lingrong how to sing so she could gain the Emperor's favour in Episode 31. Essentially all these show that Lingrong has been nothing but Zhen Huan and the Empress' pawn her whole life. The symbolism and details in this drama are truly great
I think that's why this is such a great drama to rewatch, there's no way to pick up on everything in one watch, and even after several rewatches you can still find something new.
Lingrong definitely broke my heart. The world has beaten her down so much that she truly thought she was worthless even though she was definitely one of the most talented in the harem. she was an expert at incense , singing, even ice skating etc. It's too bad the empress got to her. I understand her pov but I wish she had the strength to at least speak her true thoughts before causing the death of so many. I did love her moments leading to her death. The relief she had and how almost happy that she at least got to die with her own hands via those almonds.
At the begining of the drama I really liked Ling Rong, she was just a girl wanting to gain some status to his family especially her mother... however due to all the things that she made (like betrayal and using shady drugs) my feelings for her turned from love to hate.... LingRong: *talks about a tragic past and why she acted like she did* ZhenHuan: Cool...but still murder Me: LMAO
Aw dang I did forget she knew about the cream. I love how patient Zhen Huan is in order to bring down her enemies. Unlike the Empress, who pretends to take time in her plots, she's no match for Zhen. I'll bet the palace kitchen knew what they were and the Emperor, or his close servants allowed their delivery because it'll absolve the Emperor of directly ordering her death out of "respect" for losing their child. I love the Empress popping up behind Lingrong in the vid. Was hilarious!
Considering no one said a word about it after LR died, you're probably right. It's still kind of wild to me that they even keep it in stock though 😂 She certainly did take her time- the empress' look of realization shows just how shocked she was to learn that ZH knew and just didn't say anything.
I don’t think they kept it in stock though? They had to specifically ask Zhen Huan for permission about whether or not to give them to Lingrong. Probably after Zhen Huan gave the OK they procured it from somewhere to give to her
@@lilytay9211 Fair enough, I guess I was making assumptions about the timeline. SPSh comes in to see ZH, tells her about the almonds, and then the scene immediately after is ZH going to see LR. That made me think she went to see her immediately afterwards. Perhaps it was a different day...
Finally, after a week, Drama recap came back with another episode! Honestly, this is Emperor's fault at the end of the day. He literally treated Ling Rong like a pet bird.
Yup. This happens time and time again. He treats them like trash and then gets surprised when they eventually snap. Btw thank you, it makes me so happy that someone looks forward to my videos 😊
Regarding the almonds, it's not really surprising. The harem always had various methods of suicide available for whenever the emperor "granted" death on someone. Typically they'd be presented with a tray holding a cup of poison, a dagger, and a long piece of silk to choose from, and the variety of poisons were abundant. All that poison had to be kept somewhere, so... the almonds were probably on hand just like those were, for whenever they were needed. In the scene before Zhen visits An Lingrong for the last time, Zhen's eunuch informs her that An has requested bitter almonds. This was a plain request for death by poison, and Zhen points out that the emperor ordered An to be confined but not to deny her anything. To me this has always been closely tied to all those times you hear the phrase "lock him/her up and keep them from killing themselves". The emperor asked for An to be locked away, but did *not* specify she was to be kept from suicide. So... Zhen approves of the request, and the kitchen delivers the bitter almonds to An. For both Zhen and the emperor, allowing her the almonds neatly ties up the An problem without either of them having to dirty their reputation with *ordering* her death. I'm no poison expert at all, but I guess cyanide (which suffocates you) is one of the quicker and easier ways to go. At least An didn't splutter blood all over herself for 15 minutes while delivering dramatic last-words like some ppl in these dramas do :P
Also, there were MANY instances of the Empress pitting Lingrong and Zhen Huan against each other. That time when Lingrong was waiting outside the palace was one of them also
Even though I feel sad for Ling Rong, I can't feel bad about her ending. Ling Rong was written as a very realistic character. Who else in ling rong position wouldn't turn 'bad', after getting looked down on by everyone. My only problem with her revenge, or way of avenging herself. Was killing children and trying to kill zhen huan father in prison. Yah, she was being pressured to do it by the empress. But the was such a drastic turn from her old character that my pity for her was slowly disappearing. Perhaps if she stayed to herself like zhen huan in the earlier episodes or expressed her feeling if abandonment to zhen huan. Things would have been different. But honestly with how the story was going these options would have been unlikely to happen.
You know, I think LingRong was never as kind hearted as some seem to think, from the very beginning she was more brutal than the other two (remember MZ and ZH were very shocked when she told the servants to kill that maid turned consort (Yu)). She certainly got worse over time, but especially since we only met her at the palace and know nothing about her past, I get the feeling that she wasn't all that pure hearted to begin with. That said, yes ALL of this could have been avoided if she were better at communicating. Every time she felt slighted by ZH she would keep it inside and let it fester, when all she had to do was say something. The harem would be a much happier place if they had a resident therapist.
@@dramarecaps4217the issue with An Lingrong , is that she is a perpetually ungrateful person, she has a low self esteem, she also feels very inferior to Zhen Huan right from the beginning, remember when Zhen Huan's mother came into the palace, she said she was happy she could finally give something to Zhen Huan's family in the position of a master . She was always jealous of the fact that Zhen Huan had everything and she had nothing. And the way she caused Shen Mei Zhang's death , was from a place of pure evil. But then, as I grew older, I just realised no matter how good and superior they are, I can just treat them as supporting roles in my life. I am the lead, the protagonist of my own story. I can understand that due to their circumstances Ling Rong could misunderstand Zhen Huan and vice versa, but harming Zhen Huang child, that was the step too far. And honestly, wasn't that the easy solution to take it out on Zhen Huan? If she was really determined to avenge herself, she would also fight the emperor or empress? I know they are the almighty in the harem, but if you are going to fight to death, you might as well go for the strongest opponent.
I also think she sorta took the easy way out! Lingrong is not very brave or strong, but she knows that with ZH's personality and intelligence, she can get revenge for her, so I guess she thought this was the best solution
I believe the motivation of An Lingrong switching allegiance to the Empress was because the Empress had more power , resources and influence to action things. When the allegiance switching happened, it was when Zhen Huan couldn't sway the emperor in releasing Lingrongs father out of jail. Lingrong also started thinking Zhen Huan's friendship and kindness was insincere, which truly wasn't the case. Zhen Huan tried to foster a sisterhood between the three, An Lingrong just didn't get the memo due to her inferiority complex.
I believe the core essence why Ling Rong chose to avenge herself by harming Zhen Huang, was due to the more personal affection she had felt for Zhen Huang when she at first had thought they shared a sisterly bound. Even though she disliked her role with both the emperor and the empress, she never had felt any true bounding with neither of them and thus their coldness "didn't hurt as much" since she already knew what she was dealing with in regards to both of them and expected nothing less. Due to comprehensive misunderstandings along with her inferior complex, this gradually made her feel betrayed by Zhen Huang on a far more personal level which turned her love into hatred, as this are two sides of the same coin. Regardless, in my opinion Ling Rong took things to far when she harmed innocent children. That's where I draw the line and all my sympathy to her was erased. Nothing justify such action. She got what she deserved at the end. I did not spill a single tear for her.
@@luzbelle1333 I hadn't thought of it like that, I think you made a really good point! That made their ending even sadder. Even thought she hated ZH, she was the last person she wanted to see
@@ariadreamwrigt4637 Even though I don't justify An Lingrong, I do think she was mislead to a certain degree by her dreadful circumstances which combined with her weak character, along with certain skills, made for a perfect "puppet" to the Empress. I don't really think she would have gone so far as she did if the Empress hadn't more or less blackmailed her to do her bidding. However as said, ultimately An Lingrong choose what she did. Pitty as she could never take joy in her incredible skills, which was far from only her physical beauty. I truly loved her singing voice. Not even Zhen Huang possesed such voice as hers. Nobody in the harem could begin to compare. The empress immediately saw its potential or as she said herself "wish to use that voice". To bad An Lingrong didn't use it better than to sing for another's tones.
Thank you so much for these videos! They're amazing. I feel kinda sorry for Lingrong. Her whole life was spent being a puppet controlled by others. Also, I just watched the Yanxi palace series that you recommended to me. It was sooo good. I really liked the dynamic between the main character and the emperor in that one. It was so hilarious. (Also the emperor in that one isn't as much of an asshole compared to this drama.)
Yes! So many harems to explore haha. YanXi palace is so different from legend of Zhenhuan, much happier and you never really feel too scared for the main lead. I really liked it. Like you said the dynamic between the main couple was also much better, they felt more like equals. What are you watching next ?😁
ultimately what brought down Lingrong was her insecurity, no matter how much she rose in ranks or how much talent and knowledge she possesses, her insecurities and inferior complex were deadly like how she always felt like she wasn't fully accepted into Zhen Huan and Meizhuang which is really sad the two probably didn't see her as their true friend either to some extent (like back in the early episode when they were just newbies Lingrong did something "cruel" for Zhen Huan's sake yet when she and Meizhuang heard about it, they were like "damn, this girl real bad" and poor Lingrong overheard that )
That's why I really like this drama, no one is totally evil. In some ways LR was just a pathetic, insecure girl and you're right, the way her "friends" treated her didn't help
I remember in the first episodes Zhen huan Smelled something bad in her palace and it turns out it was like a incense they put in somebody’s soil to make them miscarry now Zhen huan is doing sort of the same thing
She's certainly no longer the innocent girl she came in as. I will say for this specific situation, she does get a little bit of a pass because both she and LingRing knew that she would miscarry. It was inevitable, it's not like ZH caused her to miscarry when she could have had a baby.
3:03 I thought you differentiated their voices enough. Also, I'm pretty sure Huang GuiFei and Jing GuiFei got in some more blows recontextualizing some of Li Fei's actions and sowing seeds that Li Fei was a bad apple... or bad little bird. I really enjoyed the skit framing you put on.
I disagree. If feel bad for Ling Rong but she wanted to enter the palace, it’s one of those things: if you can’t hang with the big dogs stay on the porch situations. Zhen Huan helped her but she couldn’t force her to be talented etc
I had to watch some episodes twice as I could not understand . Episodes 72 was missing so after made episodes did not not make sense . You did a great job. I love this drama but had difficulty understanding. You are super . Did you do all the episodes . . .? So I can check
Getting the emperor to essentially r*pe An Lingrong puts her in an irredeemable category for me. There's something about that kind of violation that just...well, there's no other crime like that
None of these woman's are saints. At the end it's about survival. Mercy doesn't cut it when the edge gets sharp. Between Ling Rong and Zhen Huang there's a sisterhood spinning out of control due to many misunderstandings within a competitive and hopeless circumstance. All of which eventually turned them into each others worst enemies. The emperor was the main antagonist at the end and therefore the women he kept imprisoned in his harem turned against him and literally ended his life. I loved watching that part.
If lingrong wasnt working for the empress, and gained her own strengths instead of talent. She would've step on zhen huan. All she had to do, was to play a sop role. Learn zhen huan relationship. Never treated zhen huan bad.(Basically stay to herself). While also surviving. And get pregnant at a later stage. Then boom, zhen huan having an affair. She was only threatened ny ling rong , when she thought she could have his HEIR.
Wait, how come Lin Rong can really get pregnant after taking the skinny medicine? And whose baby is that? And why they want to get rid of her pregnancy if she really pregnant?
The skinny medicine did make her basically infertile. It was a crazy fluke that she was able to become pregnant after taking the medicine which they did on purpose to get her father out of prison. The baby really is the emperors. And the skinny medicine made it so that even if she somehow became pregnant (which she did) she would never carry the baby to term. She was always going to miscarry so they were planning on framing zhen, getting her in trouble, but zhen pushed the blame back on them using the flowers.
Okay, I understand Lingrong not liking Zhen Huan but I never understand how she got to the point wanting Zhen Huan’s family and Meizhuang literally dead because in the show Zhen Huan never done anything to her deserving responses of this magnitude lol. Remember she literally tried to kill Zhen Huan’s dad with rats when he was in jail to be exiled. Lingrong’s dad and family actually can’t benefit from Zhen Huan dad’s downfall because Lingrong dad is a local official while Zhen Huan dad worked for the central government in the capital, they have no connections not crossover at all
Lingrong in the novel could be the good guy from her perspective because there’s a very clear motive while in the show she can’t because her motives are literally just jealousy
People have done worse for jealousy. It can really eat some people up inside and they'll do anything to bring that person down just to feel a little better about themselves. Your last point though is a very good one, she could have done SO much better for herself and her family if she had simply stayed loyal to Zhenhuan. I suppose when she made her choice between the empress and Zhenhuan, she simply chose wrong thinking that the empress would come out on top in the end.
I don't agree with you on the fact that lady sourire used her rather the opposite is,true. It was a big error to have invited such an evil girl back to the palace as it would had saved lady sourire alot of headache and i think lady sourire was too kind to her. This emperor for me is the e cause for all the disorder abd bloody war between the concubine ,very weak emperor that failed to use his power as an emperor to punish the empress and her assistant fleur. If it was difficult for him to punish fleur because of her powerful military brother ,he would have for once and all put an end to the evil actions of the empress but he continued watching by and this led to many other deads, he could have used his power to promote lady Sourire for she had a kind heart but he watched all these women in their merciless fights and did nothing ,really bad how much time he spent solving women fights problems
I totally agree that the emperor is the real problem in all of this, there is so much more her could have done that would have solved or at least mitigated these problems, but he just did not seem to care.

What are you watching next ?😁
ultimately what brought down Lingrong was her insecurity, no matter how much she rose in ranks or how much talent and knowledge she possesses, her insecurities and inferior complex were deadly like how she always felt like she wasn't fully accepted into Zhen Huan and Meizhuang which is really sad
the two probably didn't see her as their true friend either to some extent (like back in the early episode when they were just newbies Lingrong did something "cruel" for Zhen Huan's sake yet when she and Meizhuang heard about it, they were like "damn, this girl real bad" and poor Lingrong overheard that )
That's why I really like this drama, no one is totally evil.
Thank you!
your humour is just my vibe!!
Ling Rong: (Looking at the skies)

😂
I disagree. If feel bad for Ling Rong but she wanted to enter the palace, it’s one of those things: if you can’t hang with the big dogs stay on the porch situations. Zhen Huan helped her but she couldn’t force her to be talented etc
Can't wait for Legend of Lingrong
I had to watch some episodes twice as I could not understand . Episodes 72 was missing so after made episodes did not not make sense . You did a great job. I love this drama but had difficulty understanding. You are super . Did you do all the episodes . . .? So I can check
Yup! Now working on RuYi's royal love in the palace.
Getting the emperor to essentially r*pe An Lingrong puts her in an irredeemable category for me. There's something about that kind of violation that just...well, there's no other crime like that
Fair enough, there were definitely other ways to get LingRong to miscarry, she didn't need to go to this place
@@luzbelle1333i don’t think Causing someone to be raped is morally grey
If lingrong wasnt working for the empress, and gained her own strengths instead of talent. She would've step on zhen huan. All she had to do, was to play a sop role. Learn zhen huan relationship. Never treated zhen huan bad.(Basically stay to herself). While also surviving. And get pregnant at a later stage. Then boom, zhen huan having an affair. She was only threatened ny ling rong , when she thought she could have his HEIR.
I think this too!! Hindsight is 20/20 and I'm sure at the moment she thought she was choosing the right person to ally herself with...
Im pretty sure Lingrong was allergic to almonds. Not because they were poisonous.
@@shyler4444 Thank you!
i say lingrong is pretty yanderu and gay for zhenhuan at the beganing

Including stuffs she did for jealousy’s sake that was not in the best interests of her or her family
Especially she could have ended up with a much higher position for her and her family if she just simply stayed being friends with Zhen Huan
I’m early :DDD
