    As someone who was actually there, and right in the direct middle of the crowd, I can assure that it was even more awesome in person. The weather was PERFECT - about 80 - 85 degrees with almost no humidity. The sound was ambient and crystal clear. It was bouncing off the buildings -- surround sound --- but with no apparent distortion. Performances were wonderful, and so was the crowd, many of whom stayed after to pick up what little trash was left. Wonderful to see Nigel and Dee in person, and the guitarists (Tim Renwick and Richie Zito) were also great. There was absolutely nothing about this concert that I didn't like. I wish the video that came out had the ENTIRE concert on it and not just highlights. Every song was just FANTASTIC. Wish someone would release a DVD of this, as the VHS copies I have seen are horrible. It was probably the greatest concert I have ever, or will ever go to. I was just 16, and it is one of the highlights of my teen years. Will never forget it. One to tell your kids about!

      I hate to sound like a pathetic aging hipster, but I wish wish wish I was born 20 years before I was..... I wish I could see Elton in his prime, before surgery took away his falsetto. I saw my first Elton show just a few months ago and it was nothing short of amazing, but damn I would kill to be able to see a free EJ concert in Central Park.

    I was at this concert with my best friend. We lived in a small apartment 1/2 block from the park. What fun we had! I was never a big Elton fan, but watching an amazing artist like him can turn a person. My best friend died 13 years later. This song has had very special meaning for me ever since.

    No offence against Elton John today, but this performance was absolutely mind-blowing. If he gets on stage and does something when he's 80, I'll watch...and it will be good. But in his prime, this guy had complete command of the emotional state of everyone in hearing distance. One of the best songs ever, and a monster exhibition of it.

    My grandfather lived in North London in the early 1960s and used to get Jazz and Blues records imported from the US by a local record shop. Every time he would go to pick them up he'd notice they'd clearly been opened and played, and suspected the culprit was this dorky teenager with glasses who worked there, and who's name was Reginald. Years later when Reginald Dwight changed his name to Elton John and became one of the biggest rockstars in the world, my grandfather couldn't believe what had happened.

    I have been collecting rock music on my new ipod, from the 50s to the 00s, and the 70s rule. There is great rock in each decade, but in my opinion the 1970s were an explosion of great performers, great songwriters, and great bands that we have never seen before or since. This song must be counted in the Top 10 greatest rock songs of all time.

      I agree. He and Nigel were treated so badly in 1975 and then 1985 when they were sacked for no reason. They played on his biggest albums, built the songs and vocal harmonies and were on all the big tours. They were with him from day 1 and to be sacked with no explanation was terrible. Good to see Nigel Olsson is back now, since 2000.

    • @homeone4054
      @homeone4054 6 лет назад

      I read recently that in 75 Elton was already discussing the Dodger Stadium concerts with Nigel...and then sacked them. Someone must have had a word or three in his ear. There were rumblings (according a transcript of an interview with Nige I foundl) that certain people felt he and Dee were earning too much out of the Elton show. I do enjoy listening to the ROTW/Blue Moves band too - for different musical reasons - but whilst they were probably technically better they lacked soul and drama in how they played. Notwithstanding that, I am a great great fan of Roger Pope's drumming and there are certainly songs on those albums which Nigel wouldn't have come close to playing.

      No! Bernie writes great words. Elton writes great piano parts. That's it. Davey, Dee and Nigel built the songs. The music. The vocal harmonies. The groove. The vibe. They were a band in the proper sense despite it always being portrayed as Elton being the creative force and them as support men. It was a travesty the way he treated Dee and Nigel in 75-80 and then from 85-92 (when Dee passed) and 85-2000 when Nigel came back.

    Elton, the first rock star to play Central Park. Yeah, it was free, but Elton had the draw & star power to pack in half a mill. I'd like to see enema or poop dog do that. This is the best concert opener ever. From the erie wind & bell tolling to the resounding building to crescendo is awesome & breathtaking. Where in the fuck would we of been without this man's great music?

    Elton wrote this piece thinking about what type of music he'd like at his funeral... I surely want this played at mine. Take a good look, folks. This is one of the most talented men alive today.

    In his prime here! Can see the energy there! Always loved the part at 4:48 where the keyboardist looks over at Elton when he drops in to Love. Just a cool moment of a musician in the moment.

    I saw him last year- the first minute of the song, spent waiting for him to play, was the longest minute of my life. Such a terrific song, thanks for posting.

    And 28 years later, he finally came to Burlington Vermont, led the show off with this song, and it was non-stop hits for 3 whole hours. What was considered a status symbol(ticket to show) turned out to be an experience of a lifetime. I play this song and I'm right back in that grandstand seat. Thank you Elton.... for everything.

    For those wondering YES it was on the great lawn in Central Park NYC. I was a senior in high school and played hookey traveled from philly, and it was awsome. I'm 47 and hundreds of shows later both large and small this is still one of the best songs preformed live in front of tens of thousands all there to s
