They believed Elizabeth was illegitimate and Mary, as the descendant of Henry VIII's sister, Margaret Tudor, was the rightful heir. Elizabeth was reluctant to have her killed, so she imprisoned her instead for 19 years

I often wonder how it would be to live during those times. Drastically different in numerous ways but very similar at the same time regarding ppls way of thinking and corruption. As we can see that never changes with the ppl at the top unfortunately.

Thanks for your endeavours to reveal the dramatic history of Scotland especially that of Mary and the scary memories she left behind. I have red before that about the time Mary would be subjected to stricter custody there was already a named banner and flags in Scotland for her return to be restored to her throne. If this is true, it is important to look into it. This will give us a better way to summarize the destiny of Mary Queen of Scots. I consider the Catholic records about Mary to be very important.

I find this era of English Scottish conjoined history most interesting. There are so many facets that contribute and lead towards events of the Jacobite and Georgian era which moulded what became our modern form of government. I hope you don't forget to mention that Elizabeth had herself been under a cloud of possible execution when her elder sister Bloody Mary was on the throne and that may have influenced her prevarication in signing cousin Mary's death warrant. Also it is important to mention cousin Mary's rightful claim to the English throne.
Untanglingling the mass of fact and events during this period is arduous good luck.

It's worth noting that Mary was a member of France's powerful and ultra-Catholic Guise family, who were rivals for power of the ruling Valois dynasty. At the time all this was going on, Elizabeth was actually involved in negotiations to marry either Charles IX of France, or his younger brother Henry, (who went on to become king himself), as well as their cousin Henry of Navarre, a leader of the Protestant faction in France (also later king of France- everybody in this period of French history is called Henry for some reason).
Sending Mary back to France would potentially have given the Guise family an extra 'card' to play, and strengthened their ability to influence French, English and Scottish politics, at the expense of both Elizabeth and her potential French and Scottish allies. Politics in the 16th century was an even murkier business than today, and Elizabeth wasn't just acting out of spite when she imprisoned Mary, and Mary was a smart enough politician that she might well have done the same had their roles been reversed.
Also, although I agree that much of the evidence against Mary for murdering her husband may have been fabricated, I'm not entirely convinced she was innocent of involvement- he was a pretty vile character and she certainly had plenty of motive to want rid of him.

She HAD been trying to secure a papal divorce from Henry, Lord Darnley (the king consort) almost as soon as her son and heir James was born but it seems the Pope wasn't eager to hand it out. However Mary STILL wanted to end her unhappy 2nd union and was known to leave the spot that her husband had been ailing from smallpox just minutes before it blew up! Even so her having an heir would be Mary's ONLY lasting triumph from this marriage and her return to Scotland (and, of course, every single monarch of Scotland and England since then has been her direct descendant ).
As to Elizabeth's marriage negotiations with the French king and heirs? She wasn't about to leave HER homeland much less relinquish (or share) her monarchial clout but she liked to play these Continental suitors against each other to get the most favorable deals possible for England. It's not for nothing that she was considered the model for the 'cat [who]played the fiddle' (or toyed with a target mouse) in the 'Hey Diddle Diddle' nursery rhyme!

Our respective ancestors were transported in chains, endured the lash and their blood, sweat and tears built the land. Why would anyone be embarrassed by that.

But the saddest irony is that the land the Queen of Scots truly loved and considered her home wasn't her domain and birthplace of Scotland where she'd left as a child but instead was France where she came of age. During that time, she had considered Scotland to have been her personal cash cow (and the source of her title of queen regnant which she never let her onetime mother-in-law Catherine de Medici meant she outranked even HER- the French queen consort and queen mother). She had even known to call Scotland 'my savage kingdom' and never entirely shook that belief- even after her forced return.
Of course, she should also never let Queen Elizabeth forget that she was still upset that she had NOT been granted safe passage at sea from France and had had to essentially sneak her boat around English waters to return. However, Elizabeth herself never forgave the Queen of Scots that, as soon as her own half-sister Mary had died, her cousin (and her first husband Francis II of France) had openly claimed the English throne and proclaimed themselves Queen and King Consort of England! IOW, the Queen of Scots had no reason to think that the Queen of England had any reason to trust her much less like her or think that she had to support her as a sister queen regnant!

The already shrewd toddler was heard to say 'Why hap yesterday I'm called Lady Princess and today Lady Elizabeth?'. That she didn't die of neglect or even outright murder during the bad tempered Henry VIII's reign (and had NO ONE besides a few easily replaceable servants helping her- the surviving Boleyns had little if anything to do with her afterwards) is a testament at how determined and resourceful she learned to be from an early age! And then surviving the chaos and intrigues of Edward VI and lastly the paranoia of Mary I's reign she wasn't about to chance any rivals or claimants- going so far as to never marry or even name her successor until her literal deathbed! Yep, the Queen of Scots was outmatched in the wits department from the start even if she WAS more attractive and had borne (as it turned out) the heir to BOTH their kingdoms.

It just makes either look weak.In England the Catholic wanted Mary and the Protestants wanted Elizabeth unless they were Scottish protestant then they just wanted rid of the monarchy all together. I always said Mary hoor a Scott's was much like the roads around Perth.
At least in the sense every road has a massive hole, and constantly seeks to be filled.
She used the 1 o'clock cannon Big Bertha as a sex toy.

Bruce, I've often pondered, what would have happened if Elizabeth had just aided an hurried Mary back to France. She could have settled her in some minor duchy or earldom, and the later machinations would have been everted.
Mary wasn't welcome at the French Court, but Charles IX might have been persuaded to settle her somewhere far from court. By imprisonning her only real rival to the English throne, Elisabeth set in motion the very circumstances that would end in the Babington plot.
The Casket Letters have always bothered me, as it seems obvious they were added to by another hand (Bothwell?).
Walsingham was a right wee evil Bastard.

we use "jiggery pokery" here in NZ too, had no idea it was Scottish! I'd really like to feel sorry for Mary, she being my beloved Charles 1's grannie and all, but I just can't, she's a drip. Whoever did murder Darnley deserves a prize though.

Watching Iain Robertson rambles really got me in the mood for it, would rather do it with someone than myself though, I'm a big feerty at night 🤣🤣🤣

    Bruce hi
If you go to Kielder Castle there is a plaque showing the 1st international match was in 1790 between the Dukes of Northumberland and Buccleugh
The couldn’t do any grouse shooting due to a bird disease so the organised a football match instead
There was unlimited numbers and the game kicked off at breakfast time and at the end of the game , teatime . England had won 2-0
But 8 players where found dead and several more died within 2 weeks
An annual match is still held in the Park of Alnwick Castle , the Dukes ancestral home , the site of the original match is now the home of Border Park Rugby Football Club

It really isn’t surprising Mary chose to go to England after the Battle of Langside, rather than France. England was closer. However also, after the Battle of Carberry Hill Elizabeth showed the most support for Mary out of all Mary’s fellow monarchs. There was a real possibility the Lords would have executed/murdered Mary.
Elizabeth wrote to the Lords threatening retribution if they harmed Mary. Whether this protected Mary or did more harm may be a debate, but Mary probably thought Elizabeth was more sympathetic to her than Elizabeth actually was.
