  • I have spent the last 10 years helping people to grow their own food at home. And now I wonder about some practices. Is your homegrown food poisoning you? With so many chemicals in use in everyday life and people looking to recycle, reuse and repurpose products in the garden, IT got me wondering how safe tires in the garden are.

Lots of people use tires as raised beds in the garden. Usually to grow potatoes, brassicas, or lettuce. I was recently asked the question by a viewer, " Is it safe to grow potatoes in tires"? I knew what I felt but i delved into the statistics to bring you the facts so that you can make your own mind up.
So in this video, I am going to take you through all the stats I found so that you can decide yourself if your homegrown food is poisoning your family. Stay tuned!

I have a great idea for anybody who likes to use recycled planters. When my old clothes dryer died my husband removed the drum from it and I use that as a planter and it's so big and deep. I painted it up nice and painted a sunflower on it I just love it!

    Hi Tony,
Great information and extremely well presented. This is the best discussion I have seen about tires anywhere. I have always been against using tires for any kind of gardening and as much as I like the concept of earthships I wouldn't want to live in such close proximity to a wall made of tires.

I saw a comment on a RUclips video about using compacted soil in tyres to build earthships from a person who works in the tyre manufacturing industry. This man said that using tyres was a terrible idea as the tyres off-gas some really bad chemicals and he recommended that tyres not be used for this purpose.

Thanks for doing the thorough research. I built a retaining wall with tyres some years back and had to demolish it. The stench coming off them when the sun shone on them was horrendous and I could taste the chemical smell several feet away. Have that leach into my food? No thanks! Hearing what you said, I don't even like having them hang around on the edge of the plot in the shade waiting for some other unspecified use.

1st class video and it brings to our attention the possible dangers of using tyres, another thought is the water run off the roads that must contain tyre dust, this is often run onto farm land and used for crops, your search into the chemical build up of a tire is alarming, well done.

Thank you for doing all this research! It helped me come to the conclusion that I will grow SOME kinds of vegetables in tires but not all. That's because I bought an old house and I wanted to find out if it was dangerous for me to garden near the house when there could be remnants of lead paint in the soil. I found out that you shouldn't eat the roots of anything (like a potato) but that fruits (like tomatoes) do not take any of the lead with them. Leaves are kind of in between so should be avoided. So it would make sense to me that the studies are inconclusive because it matters what the plants do with the toxins in the soil.

I have often looked around the garden and allotment and wondered about various materials.. certain types of weed membrane that shred into fibres and of course, tyres. I know some allotments implement a total ban on tyres and certain carpets. Some trugs (which I have a few) are also made from recycled tyres. I still grow in tyres, but am reducing the usage for my root veg like potatoes hopefully this is my last year. I am less worried about growing fruiting vegetables in tyres because fruiting plants have the ability to filter out toxic chemicals in the soil.

Another option could be by covering the insides and outsides of the tire with a safe material so the rubber won't touch the soil or the plant. I haven't tried this but I am planning to. The tire would be just a reinforcement structure that holds the soil without touching or leaching the soil.

My thoughts are exactly like yours! I'm not risking my family's health. N0 WAY. Growing flowers in them is fine, but actually I just don't want any around as they do leach chemicals and I've seen how people suffer and die from chemicals here in the States. No thanks! Great video and excellent coverage; I appreciate your time given to research it.👵🎶🗽☔😊

Hi from California. I just saw your post on tires. I am not surprise with what you were able to find out. I would like to know is it safe to use plastic trash containers for planting fruit trees, or do you think that they may have the same chemicals as well? We have a lot of gophers and in soil burrowing pests and I would like to use them as barriers when planting the trees in the ground. Thank you for your channel. I find you a great help in gardening.

Zinc is an essential nutrient lead is a poison but the plant has to take the lead up which will be in varying degrees before we can ingest it. Polypropylene pots will also have chemicals that depending on how well they are locked in to them could also leach them out it’s nice to be safe but how far do you go even the most carefully looked after organic soil will have detrimental minerals in them they’re a part of nature, keep up the good work like your vids👍

I can see how all other options should be explored before going with the tire. But if you have no other option, it will be fine in my opinion. Subscribed.

i don`t use tyres but a very well made and interesting video
i would like to ask about all the mulch on your veg beds have you a video of how you use, apply and the thinking behind it
the mulch i take it is the same as on top of the tubs of potatoes which was rapeseed straw which i asked you about being treated with
    eucalyptus oil.

Hiya, Ive never used tyres to grow anything, and after watching this video, I certainly never will, thank you for putting the information out there, as it something I may have done in the future. I was wondering if it would be beneficial for people who already have flowers/food, to line the tyres with a thick food safe plastic...if there is one? Many thanks for the video.

Hi Tony have a few questions about when to harvest potatoes. How many days before I should/could harvesting Marie peer, Charlotte, king Edward, desire, also how do I prepare my raised bed and buckets for next year potato crop. Should I add fertiliser/feed etc and then cover raised beds and buckets to block out light with a ground sheet that will still let water in etc until I am ready to plant next year. Will this give me a better crop.

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  4 года назад

Charlotte around 90-100 days the others around 120-140 days

Thank you for doing this - I'll use it as a reference to send people to. It has always horrified me. I'm all for creative reuse, but all the toxins they're made of and come in contact with, why risk it? The lead in the ground where tires were degrading is reason enough!

Quick tip when using anything in the garden like old tyres, plastic boxes etc check if they are toxic when burnt (google do not actually burn them) if toxic do not use for garden beds instead I use old car tyres for garden seating, water features, tree swing, huge tyres for strength training... bed bases for garden beds..leftover cardboard packaging for killing of grass patches to soil...

    • @simplifygardening

Another poison problem is the broadleaf herbicide sprays most cash crop farmers use on hay and straw. In North America it's used by the huge majority of farmers. The hay is then eaten by the animal where some remains in the flesh and also passed on through the manure where it remains for around 18 months before it totally breaks down. It's also used on pastures for grass fed animals, so you really need to ask where the hay and straw (and manure) come from and whether or not this type of herbicide was used. Bagged manures are no safer since they're quickly composted and distributed with the chemicals still intact, straw mulches are a direct deposit. Why does this matter? Because many of our veg plants are broadleaf and we risk losing them to the silent herbicide killer. Sometimes we simply have no choice over what we can use but we need to be aware of the health hazards involved.
