I repurposed feral store-bought russet potatoes into my garden years ago when I lived in Louisiana in the USA. That's right. I just stuffed these supermarket potatoes into the heavy clay water-logged red soil of my Louisiana back yard. I didn't hill the soil-- just ran the roto-tiller through the clay and plopped the potatoes into the heavy ground. Reaped a very large harvest, although like you, the potatoes were small to medium sized. They tasted great. What a success. My Cajun neighbors thought I was nuts till I showed them the results. God's hand at work!

Maybe the size of the potato has to do with the soil type? Maybe clay soils make it harder to get big tubers while loose soils are easier. Dunno, might experiment on this.

I recently discovered a cloth pull tie bag (used for storing potatoes to supposedly keep them fresh for longer) that I had hanging behind a door in my kitchen, that I’d not noticed for nearly two years, I had thought it was empty anyway, but there were stalks sticking out of the top, and as it turns out... strings and strings of potatoes... long since turned into rocks, but still! No light, no soil, no water! That’s why I’ve taken an interest now... blew me away lol

I've done this a couple of times now with Store bought potatoes & have ended up with a huge harvest much like yours & I did it in Pots. Also I think the old Wives Tale about not doing it because of diseases spreading is probably a lie propagated by Big Business because if we all started growing our own, we wouldn't be going into the Stores & buying thiers ; )

My first experience with growing something store bought was about 1964 when I was 5 years old and they used to sell popcorn and oil in a bottle you could pop it on the stove and the oils already with it. Well I took about 10 of those popcorn kernels out to the backyard and dug a trench and planted them and within six weeks we had corn coming up out of the ground! My mother could not believe it. We live in a suburban area now where we can't plan anything but since I've watched your videos with the free standing planners, I'm thinking of getting back into some backyard gardening. Thanks Mark! Peace!

I have also cut the ends off of onions and scallions and regrown them from the roots - I never lack for green onions now. Recently, I tried regrowing celery - I cut the last 2 inches off, put that in some water that covered the bottom about 1/2 inch. There is now some beautiful green shoots coming out of the top. It is such fun to see thing like this happen.

This spring they have sprouted again, so will do it all over again. 😊. I put my food scraps under the mulch and now I have butternut squash plant that didnt die off in our winter that has over 6 butternut squashes on it. I did this for the first time this year and I harvested them yesterday, they look amazing can't wait to eat them. Will definitely be doing this again with shop bought potatoes that have sprouted.

You sir are brillaint... you are my 'go-to' person for advise on growing fruit and veges. I have grown most of my plants from store bought produce. Avocados, Calamondin, Spring onions, Onions, Garlic, Sweet potato, Potato, Corriander, loquat, lime, lemon, mango, lemon grass, pineapples, papaya, chilli, capsicum, custard apple etc.. and recently Lychee... and about to try Longan and hopefully get my hands on some rambutan .. I'm in Perth WA.

Great video, thank you for your post. My father used to use store bought potatoes in his garden and he had good luck with them.

Awesome. I'm trying this using sprouted store bought, planted in the ground and backfilled into bottomless pots when the stems were high enough. Three weeks in and they're growing great so far. Will update when harvested, if it all goes well.

I’ve just planted my first potato that was sprouting in the bottom of our crisper. Not sure if it’s the right season for them here in Cooma but I’m keen to give it a go. Your videos are so informative and inspiring. I love your positive attitude and outlook mate. Thank you and Keep em coming!

Greetings from NZ Mark. Just love your videos - you have such enthusiasm and a positive attitude. I've recently planted some feral store bought potatoes in the garden. I heard the same old stories about disease risks etc but thought I'd do it anyway. Free potatoes - why not? They seem to be growing well so can't wait for harvest time. Hopefully I'll get a good crop like yours!

Produced 1.4kg of potatoes using the old close dryer tub. Filled up with sticks, compost & some soil from my garden. I purchased potatoes from local nursery, but now I’m going to try replanting older potatoes. Think I’ll need a bigger patch next time. I’ve plenty of yard, so going to put to use some old wood palings. Thank you for your idea 👩‍🌾
