- Here I describe the great helm from a Historical point of view. Advantages and disadvantages of this superb piece of medieval warfare. Towards the end of the video I also wear the helm and share with you my impressions first hand

Thank you
If only you are grossly incandescent
My favorite kind of medieval helmet :)
scarecrow gamer You have been watching quite a few of my videos on a row I see :D Thank you for your time ^^
and yes the great helm is a good looking one
Again great choice of music at the end, one thing i love about this helmet is how imposing the wearer looks
***** It does, it really looks good *__*
especially with a white shirt ;D
Ofisil as opposed to beige?
Yeah
just what i need not bullet proof but Allah proof
Wow, you're a special kind of dumb, aren't you?
helmets on swords dipped in bacon's blood DEUS VULT!
helmets on swords dipped in bacon's blood DEUS VULT!
max linger to Muslims Swine are unclean not sacred so they would have no problem bashing in a crusaders head/helmet with a mace!
Lmao I'm Muslim but I bought one of these on Amazon because I don't care
Shame the flat top was so susceptible to blunt force, which made them construct it with a rounded top later on. I personally think the flat top version looks a lot better (and more iconic), but looking better obviously won't save you from injury or death. It also looks intimidating as barely any other helm (maybe some decorated ones) though. Just imagine facing against a line (or multiple even) of knights or soldiers wearing these.
It's just a flesh wound helm
A flesh wound?!?! Your arm's off!
Another great video, you are the master of presenting important information and lots of it within a short space of time.
subscribed, beautiful descriptions and i see you have more vidoes of the sort, thank you so much for making something like this, looking for something like it for a while :D.
PridefulGaming I am glad you subscribed, welcome to the noble ones :D
My favorite helm. Thank you. Non nobis Domine, sed nomine tua da Gloriam.
Good video, one other disadvantage I think you missed is the flat top
shane Byrne True, I did mention it in another video but don't remember which one xD anyhow THANK YOU :D
Thanks for the reply, keep up the good work buddy
ahh back when he wasn't jesus...
Lord Gopnik Would this video be considered "B.C" then? XD
He looks better as Jesus
I subscribed because your videos are very informative and enjoyable :)
Nazgul0984 Thank you so much I am glad you like them :D
and welcome to the family ^_^
Metatron No problem and thanks :)
KNIGHT SOLAIRE!
Brooks ^^
Jojo?
“If I didn’t know better, I’d say you have feelings for me! Oh don’t mind me. Ha ha ha ha”
It looks quite great, some very interesting history too!
So what keeps the helmet separated from the head? Like if there was a strike on the side of the helm, is there anything to help cushion the impact from the helm to the head? I would think there might be a pillow type thing at least on the top area?
Very good guess, yes you can have padding, or mail underneath the great helm, and in some cases even a secondary smaller helmet called bacinet. If you look well even I use a little white coif above my head for wearing comfort. You can kind of notice it if you pause the video at 4:26 when I wear it and at 5:48 when I remove it I pause a second to take the coif off as well :) every part of plate armour was worn above some kind of padding :D
Cool, thanks! I saw that little pad thing, and now I am glad to know what bacinet means! I have seen and hear that term a number of times but never knew what it was ^,^
That was a curiouse little pad thing! I totally missed it lol.
Personally I have always known this as the "pretty good helm".
0:30 Wrong. Samurais never wore this helmet.
Just got one for my bday this helps a lot thanks
Deus Vult!!! Man i love this helmet.
I like/love the great helm because the look is very intimidating cuz you can't see his emotions. The flaw is there is no or little neck protection unlike the closed helm which had a bevor.
You could wear a chain coif underneath it.
Love these helmets when paired with decoration...👌🏻
By far the best video on the greathelm, subscribed.
I'm just curious, does that helm have a liner? And where did you get it from?
TeutonicPenguin I don't think the helm has a liner @4:24 you can see he's wearing a coif and I'm not sure if its the same one (or how good it is) but there is one on amazon for like $80. hope that helped
Thanks! I wasn't looking to buy it. (I already have 4 helmets. :p) I was just curious as to where he got it from. I've seen a few on ebay but they were waaaay overpriced.
I just want to add, there is no vision at your feet. You have to anticipate where you step. You just can not see or even look very far down. Condensation build up is also a fun, drippy, bonus.
wearing time!! great video metatron!
Thank you so much!
Can you also show the insides of your helmets? What's in there? And could you also wear it together with a mail coif?
Is the helmet loose during activity?
Excuse me but what is your head circumference? And what supplier provided the helmet in the video?
I was waiting for the wearing and it deserved the dramatics...how awesome does it look with the eyes piercing out..makes anyone look a hard bastard..lol
Definitely one of my favorite Knight helmets.
I metatron, I have a question about Horns on the Great helm ( specifically Teutonic models )
Nearly everyone with which I’m talking about the Teutonic Knights is saying that these helmets were very easy to grab on the wings or horns, is there any truth about that ? I personally don’t think that it would have been that easy to just grab a knight who trained his whole live on his helmet/ horns and then kill him, what are your thoughts about the horn decoration ? Practical and designed for battles or just a cool looking but unpractical piece of helmet ?
I'm not Metatron and this is 2 years late, but as someone who's been making a 13th century Teutonic Knight impression kit I've done quite a lot of research on the Order, including their helmets. The winged great helms, while they did exist, were not used in battle as far as I can tell because from personal experience they are in fact quite easy to grab. From the information I've managed to gather they were used ceremoniously, but before battle the wings would be removed or the helmet would be replaced by one without wings.
@@ubristanianempire4007 Crested helmets were used widely by German nobles, from personal experience I can tell, that the moment someone tries to grab them they expose them selves to the blade and would basically die.
It depends on the crest you are using. I have an imperial Hand on my Helm, I imagine Wings or horns are a bit different also from balance, but they were definitely used in battle, maybe not by the teutonics, but by normal nobles.
A manuscript from the mid 13th century tells us and I’m gonna try to translate the quote to English „Knights, with their crested helmets charging the Danish king“ this was a Description about the campaign of the North German lords against the king of Denmark, I guess we will never fully know, but it is very much possible that some mad lads used such helmets during cavalry engagement. We also have to consider, in the 13th century almost NO noble knights were fighting on foot, they were used to only fight on horse back during what we would consider a tradition battle.
Sir. Metatron. I was wondering if you were going to acquire, and teach us about the Sugarloaf helm. I believe it was also in the Great Helm Family, so to speak?
I have a question how do you put a hand on top of your great helm
I should think that more breaths would be desirable for better breathing and ground vision, with a 2nd layer of steel for reinforcement. Were there more expensive great helms with those features?
Yes, there were different styles and there were great helms which had better ventilation than the replica I have. Also consider that historically many knights would first wear a bacinet and on top of that they would wear the great helm, so at the end of the day they were wearing two helmets, the great helm being the second one, thus it's dimension, whish some times was really big. (as we see in some tapestries and medieval iconography)
Have you found any historical evidence of completely cylindrical great helms, ones that didn't have the upper half section sloping / narrowing inwards?
I've been looking into buying a great helm for quite some time now, but I'm not sure if I should get an early transitional helm, with the open back, or if I should get a great helm like the one in the video
Siegfried von Haus I would definitely go for the full closed great helm, I think it looks a lot better ;)
Siegfried von Haus you could even consider a sugar loaf one ;)
I've never been a fan of the sugarloaf shape. As far as looks I like the open back and closed equally, but the open back has much better ventilation and I don't think it hinders hearing quite as much. Btw, how comfortable is it when worn with a mail coif?
Believe it or not I find it more conforable when worn over a mail coif, but yes ventilation become quickly a problem if you intend to fight in it
Well I actually intend to wear it in public during the first week or so of summer, so ventilation still might be an issue
I want one it looks really cool
Where did you buyed that Great Helm and how mush it cost now?
possibly $90, matters
What was usualy worn under the great helmet? I read that they wore another type of helmet under it, is this true and if not what did they wear?
NubNaKub like a headpad?
generally, what was worn was an arming cap (perhaps with some padding) and a mail coif. however, and this became more common as the 13th and 14th centuries went on, a close fitting helmet called a cervelliere was sometimes worn under the helmet as well, later becoming the bascinet. it’s also very possible the helmets themselves had padding.
one of my favourite helmets, Deus Vult
Hey you know how is called the "turban" that some crusader helmet have? For example that "turban" that teutonic knights helmets have
Where'd you get this helmet at?
Damn good videos man subscribed.
Gerardo Maldonado I am glad you like my videos Gerardo, and thank you very much for subscribing :D Welcome :D
Interior suspension?
The vision was narrow was because it was made for jousting not for hand to hand combat. While jousting, the rider on need ms to see the target in front of him so the vision was narrow.
erm, this was a combat helmet, not a jousting helmet. i think what you mean is that it was meant for horseback combat. in any case, there’s contemporary artistic evidence showing knights in great helms fighting on foot.
how is it suspended on the head?
Srachael lockheart some included leather suspenders
Leather suspenders and a strap on the chin
a very iconic Templar helmets
How old were you back then
This video was aired 2 years ago ;)
The distribution of kinetic energy would be bad because the flat surface
I could be wrong, but I don't think people will be driving any weapon purely across the top of your helmet. The person wearing this helmet won't bend their head down so that you can get a good shot on them, so really I think the weapon would be hitting the intersection of the top and the face -- the corner. Could still be bad, but maybe not because of the flat surface.
A curved top is better for distributing force sure, but this helm gives a +9 to your badassery and a +17 to your Deus Vult. With the full set it also adds a +110% to your chance of reclaiming the holy city.
Must take a lot of research to make this, well done.
Where can i buy one? *-*
Swaggersouls anyone?
Praise swaggersouls
If I was to describe this video with a singular word it would be great
In the book "The Hundred Years War: The English in France" by Desmond Seward he claims that by the start of the hundred years war the great helm had begun to lose popularity, but wasn't extinct of course. Whatever was available was of course to be made use of, especially for Edward's army.
PunkHippie1971 with the evolution of swords into longs swords towards the later ages flat topped helms became less popular because absorbing a blow that hits you directly on the top of the head would have very bad repercussions, broken neck, brain damage etc.
Didn't crusaders wear great helms during the first crusade?
+UDK Dehumanized No, the first crusade was before the great helmets appeared. The earliest example I've seen of a depiction of what would be eventually become the great helmet are from the very beginning of the thirteenth century - just over a hundred years later. Mind you that's still an early form, basically just a facial mask attached to the helm.
just for looks i like the corinthian helm
it would be cool to see a video go over the barbute if I spelled that right
Should been longer...........much longer. Something about a Frenchman explaining medieval warfare that just goes better than a Englishman doing the same...

Deus Vulting commence!
I think my helmet is too long then. It sits on top of my shoulders. (Regular built guy).
So I think I must cut it. I wear a cap underneath it but still it's too long and kinda big. When I turn my head it's turning inside of the helmet. Sth about foam could fix. But yeah. Seems too long
Au, Thor! Maybe you own a Pembridge style greathelm, which is meant to be used with a bascinet underneath
i dont think the great helm was still worn in 1540... maybe 1440
Miesya i think it wasn't used since the XIV cnetury, it evolved in a another kind of helmet called frog mouth, also the visored helmets like the bascinet, the armet or the sallet were more practical in battlefield.
It doesn't really go with that shirt.
Maybe if you wore a jacket of some sort. Maybe a dark tweed.
Gambeson
For some reason, in this video, you remind me of James May.
+Elite Khajiit a little bit
1540?? As far as I have seen from artwork and fencing treatises, those helms spanned from the 12th to the early 15th when the sallet and the armet began to take europe by storm and, to be honest, the 16th century is all about the Burgonet lol.
CoryZamparelli I was puzzled by that date aswell, because sometimes we read that it was surclassed by the bacinet and they stopped using it in the 15th century but then I have read people saying that it was used untill that date.
Consider I made this video a long time ago and now I have more experience in matter of helmets, but what makes me think is probably what usage of the helmet we are talking about, because differentlyu from the Frog mouth that was only used in tournaments the great helmet was used for both tournaments and battlefield, so the later date could refer to tournaments alone.
Another point of interest is the fact that I have seen in iconography a great helmet with visor, which did exist, and had the exact look of a great helm but couldbe hinged up, a sort of in between specimen of bacinet and great helm.
Very good points. I had forgotten to consider tourneys and the like. Well either way I enjoy the videos! In particular the video about games and their atrocious depictions of fencing.
CoryZamparelli I am glad you do ^^ many more videos coming :D
My helmet is famous
