  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, also known by his initials SGA, is a professional basketball player for the Oklahoma City Thunder of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He has made a significant impact in the league with his versatile playing style
He was born on July 12, 1998, in in Hamilton, Toronto in Ontario Canada, to Charmaine Gilgeous and Vaughn Alexander. Shai grew up in Hamilton, Ontario. His mother, Charmaine Gilgeous, was a track athlete who competed for Antigua and Barbuda at the 1992 Summer Olympics, and his father, Vaughn Alexander, coached him in his youth. Shai’s athletic prowess can be traced back to his parents, especially his mother’s Olympic background. He has a younger brother, Thomasi Gilgeous-Alexander, who plays college basketball for the Evansville Purple Aces and a younger cousin, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, an NBA basketball player for the Utah Jazz.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is in a relationship with Hailey Summers. The couple hasn’t been shy about flaunting themselves on their social media accounts. Hailey is a Canadian soccer player who currently plays for the University of Albany. She is a graduate of St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Ontario, Canada.
Shai attended St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School and Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School in Hamilton. He later transferred to Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to further his basketball career, graduating in 2017. Despite not making the junior team in grade 9, Shai played on the midget squad and continued to develop his skills, eventually transferring to Hamilton Heights Christian Academy for better exposure and competition.
The point guard of the Thunder has traveled from Canada to Tennessee, Kentucky to Los Angeles, and now to Oklahoma City. At the age of 16, he left his hometown of Ontario in search of a place that would expose him to college coaches. He’s had to prove himself at every step of the way, begging for opportunities from teams that never gave them to him in the first place. Florida coach Mike White offered him a scholarship months after he arrived in America. Shai accepted a high-major offer out of desperation, but he still desired more. Alexander, a four-star recruit, according to ESPN, initially committed to Florida before reopening his recruitment in October 2016. He received offers from Kentucky, Kansas, Syracuse, Texas, but chose to play college basketball at the University of Kentucky which had always been his ideal school.
While playing College basketball for Kentucky he was recognized with several accolades, including SEC tournament MVP in 2018. Shai played one year of college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats, quickly becoming a top prospect for the NBA draft. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander began the 2017-18 season as a reserve, trailing freshman point guard Quade Green, but he still averaged more than 30 minutes per game. Alexander exploded against Louisville in December after a tough loss to UCLA, scoring 24 points, grabbing five rebounds, four assists, and securing three steals. He was a steady contributor for a “struggling” UK team that went on a four-game losing streak during the season. Kentucky lost in the Sweet 16 to Kansas State after playing really good basketball in the first two rounds against Davidson and Buffalo. Gilgeous-Alexander’s final college basketball performance was a missed three-point attempt at the buzzer. He declared for the 2018 NBA Draft on April 9, 2018.
Shai was drafted 11th overall for a professional career by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2018 NBA draft. He was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers the same night. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, set a season-high with 24 points in a 127-131 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on December 17, 2018.
After a successful rookie season, he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019. The athlete tied his season-high of 24 points against the Golden State Warriors on January 18, 2019. Eleven days later, he was named to the World Team, which will represent Canada in the 2019 Rising Stars Challenge. On October 8, 2019, Shai made his Oklahoma City Thunder preseason debut against the Dallas Mavericks. On December 19, he scored 18 points and hit a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Thunder to a 104-103 victory over his former team, the Los Angeles Clippers. Moreover, he recorded his second career triple-double four days later with 27 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists in a 108-94 win over the Denver Nuggets. He was named to the NBA All-Star team and the All-NBA First Team in 2023.
