I really want to see you do the originals from 1968-1975. No CGI, the budgets kept getting slashed, despite the previous movie's success, and yet they turned out quality stories. I really think you would enjoy them, plus you could see the parallels between the original Septilogy and the most recent trilogy.
James, you know I ain't much on special effects. But I totally agree with you here. Excellent movie that could not have it's impact without FX. Kudos for showing this Trilogy. Peace James.
In terms of actual filmmaking achievement, this is always one of my favorite movies. To be able to take a premise that is so absurd on its face and make it into an incredibly emotional and philosophical story that outshines most traditional war films is honestly astounding.
First time watching this one was at a triple feature of the first two before the midnight release of War. Such an amazing experience and seeing the huge level of production and cgi quality as well as Caesar’s journey all in one sitting on the full screen will still be up there as one of my fav cinema moments!
Andy Serkis is a darn treasure of cinema. Woody Harrelson is a darn beast, as usual (in a good way). I’m glad they didn’t kill Maurice, cause I was expecting that heartbreak.
I know most people love Dawn more than War, but I truly love this one and think it's the best of the trilogy. Also, James you're great at catching the very intricate technical aspects of filmmaking that not many audience members catch and as another fellow filmmaker it's greatly appreciated from you. Love what you do brother.
This makes me wanna watch the trilogy again, the way you got caught up in this was infectious! And truly it has to have at least one of *the* best scores out there. The movies, amazing as they are, wouldn’t have been the same without it. And I love how we all get captivated whenever Maurice speaks.
SPOILERS: This movie is truly a masterpiece. Caesar’s story ends perfectly. I don’t think it should’ve ended any other way. It’s truly a happy ending. He got his “people” to safety as his final mission I suppose. He made sure that everyone that he cares about made it to safety and then dies peacefully. Truly a perfect ending.
This movie is epic and when I first watched it in the cinemas I was surprised how little action there was in the film, but I think the fact that it's more of an emotional drama made it more effective and ended the trilogy on a great note!
I feel like this movie trilogy gets forgotten about a lot. Three great films with great stories, scores, acting and special effects. Considering that these are based around CG characters and still can give you the same emotion as a real cast would really set this apart from films trying to do a fraction of what it did.
ROB ROY. The best movie no one's seen. Stars Liam Neeson & Tim Roth. Was released a month after "Braveheart" and thus, was overshadowed by it. But like Braveheart, Rob Roy is about a factual Scottish person a few centuries after William Wallace. Tim Roth stars as one of my all-time favorite villains in this one. In fact, Tim Roth received his only Oscar nomination for his role in the movie. Just had to mention as a recommendation. Don't think you'd be disappointed.
I used to watch a lot of movies with my grandfather, he's 85 years old so he's seen a lot of masterpieces and he has a very good memory. Even though he's not really a movie lover, he always appreciates me showing him new movies and he literally told me that the last real masterpiece he saw was this movie with me ! ^^ Now I would also like to ask you James if you have seen the original "planet of the apes" movies from the 60's ? It would be super interesting to see you react to those movies so you can see how good they still are (the first and fourth especially) and how many references they put in the recent movies you just finished.
Hey James- From one film guy to another, I really dig your breakdowns of some of the more technical filmmaking elements of the movies you explore- not always the typical stuff that audiences notice in movies but you've got great insights- Keep up the great work man!
Hey man! Thanks for that. I try my best to give a proper balance while also making things enjoyable and digestible. Nice to hear it’s been good so far!
The way this film ties into the original film is cool, the Simian Flu has evolved and causes humans to regress essentially into apes while it makes the apes smarter as in the original series the remaining humans had de-evolved basically into Neanderthals and became the animals themselves.
YO James, idk if you've seen them before, but if you want to watch a deep dive into this trilogy here, there's a RUclips series by StorySteet on each of the Apes movies that are about an hour long each. They are an excellent watch and I highly recommend them if you've got the downtime. Regardless, loved the commentary bro, stay safe
I love the parallels between scene of the guns shooting in the Darkness being the only light on screen in Batman and the gun in the Darkness in this- yup Matt Reeves
What I loved is that karma and irony got Colonel McCullough in the end. He became the one thing that he hated so much. In his mind, if you couldn't think or feel, you're basically a mind less animal. That was a fate worse than death for him. Not only did this man killed his own son, but also killed and tortured not just apes, but humans too. Glad Caesar didn't put a bullet in him even though he had EVERY right to do so then and there! I wouldn't blame him too. But hey, he killed himself so Caesar wouldn't have to lol.
This movie is a modern masterpiece to me. Like it is rare for me to like see a trilogy that has 2 great movies in it, one of them being actually fantastic, but then I can easily just go, "yeah but THAT ONE". War is to me the best one, just without even questioning it. Honestly one of my favourite movies of all time.
One of the greatest endings of all time and One of the best trilogies of all time. Bittersweet, tragic and beautiful at all the same time! Andy Serkis deserves an Oscar for this epic performance!
its rare that a trilogy gets better with each establishment but planet of the apes is one of the rare exception, war imo is the best of the trilogy and one of the best sci fi movies I've seen. usually you have a bang in the first film, then the quality goes down or it reaches a height in number 2 and then quality decreases in the 3rd but this just kept going up, kinda like the lotr trilogy, incredible incredible film and trilogy.
One of my favorite movies of the last decade. Due in no small part to fact that imo it function’s as god dame near a remake to my all time favorite film apocalypse now
Even told me 20 years ago I'd be in love with a movie trilogy about talking apes I would have slapped you. But this movie series has given me chills and tears and I've owned all three and have watched them many many times.
Let's go James always coming in clutch with a great reaction don't even have to watch it to know it's going to be good!!!! Keep up the great stuff brother.
My mom taught me all my critical thinking. We would talk about anything and everything, and although we've always been different people we've always shared a passion for Cinema. She saw some of the original Planet of the Apes movies and she could not finish them because she couldn't stand the Apes being hurt. Her favorite land animal is the orangutan and when the trailer for the first remake movie trailer came out, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, she cried when she saw the orangutan rendering. It was so beautiful and she couldn't look at any of the promotional stuff after that, she was just so sad thinking of them getting killed. She went back to Mexico and we don't talk much (I can't go back and I wouldn't be welcomed as I am) but I hope she was able to watch the remake trilogy all these years later. She would have loved it, and been happy to see how all the Ape deaths were honored. She would probably cry when she realized the Orangutan character lived in the end.
Fun Fact: Ty Olsson (the Red Gorilla) was also in _Rise of the Planet of the Apes_ as Chief Hamill, the police officer in the helicopter who shot at Buck.
That happens to me a lot to. I forget exactly what happens in movies all the time. But once you re-watch it most of the time you notice something you didn't the first, second, third time watching it or however many time you watch a movie.
The fact this story started with humans testing a dementia/alzheimer's drug on apes, to it ending where the virus humans accidentally created ended up killing them and wiping out their ability to speak, is so profound and tragic.
The final chapter in the Planet Of The Apes Saga, but there are talks of a new film trilogy in the works, where it will take place 200 years after the events of this movie.
Thinking of a couple you may like. Das Boot directors cut is a WWII submarine movie. The Beast is a tank movie about a Soviet tank crew during the Invasion of Afghanistan.

If you've yet to see _Planet Of The Apes,_ do. The 1968 classic and reboot trilogy are all the same universe (more or less - _Rise_ references the astronaut mission). The original run of films is 💯 worth viewing - each, just as epic, profound, & disturbing in their own way.
@@jdksdj11 you are correct about Caesar in Conquest. But I was referring to the original 1968 film. The ape who led THAT revolution was named Aldo. I should've been more specific my apologies 😅

If you're familiar with the original series, and payed enough attention during this one, you can see that there's a lot of set-up for the events of Planet of the Apes taking place 10-20 years after War. That worries me. I can see Cornelius growing up to be a doctor trying to find a cure for Nova with Taylor's arrival throwing things into chaos but can this kind of story, or any of these characters, be even remotely as good as what we have as things stand?
Andy Serkis played Ceasar and is responsible for most of the emotional that you see, its CGI to an extent but he is the one portraying the emotion. There is a behind the scenes about it you should check it out!
