Jon and Martin are currently living in Montana. They unfortunately had been given all the tapes Jon recorded over the years and decided to trick a podcast company known as rustyquill, to use those tapes as a "fictional story" as a means of income for their retirement.

Sadly, Jon's guilt led him to do exactly what the web wanted again, and now he is exactly what he said he didn't want to be. Another mystery.

why would you hurt me like that
Literally ALL he had to do was wait five minutes for Martin to get there. The outcome would've been the same, but they would have lived. Even if they're alive now, we'll never know. No one will. I am....huh
Dang you are right 😦
@@rorygiambalvo2955 Alternatively, all he had to do was not give Georgie that damned lighter. Then the outcome wouldn't been different; Jon and Martin could've lived for some time, at least until The End took everyone, including the Fears themselves.

Me:. Tough
To quote the man himself "Empathy only holds you back in the end"
@@nateds7326
It’s quite clear from that quote that he is an empathy less man/human/horror or what ever he is, empathy is what makes you think about things & try to do the best for everyone & save them or at least try to save as many as you can. Empathy is what makes one human🤔🤗
"Thats rough buddy"
Parallels 159 there dunnit? “His only wish was to die alone” “tough.”
The ironic thing is that if Jonah had just left well enough alone and kept body-snatching, he probably would have lived forever like he wanted.
The irony of the eye
... why the heck didn't he think of that?
No. The End comes irregardless of bringing fear into the world. The heat death of the universe is mundane, sure, but it's an inevitable end all the same. That's the thing about The End. It was always going to come eventually. Best he could hope for would be to slip through infinite multiverses, gaining "true Immortality" be skipping into younger universes to avoid The End. It wouldn't matter though. The lack of The End can't exist without The End to prop it up, and if The End exists, the lack of it can't. The End would come for all that is and isn't eventually. Which, ironically is why The End can't ever, truly exist, not really. The End comes for Non-existence too, and so heralds the beginning, which is needed for The End in the first place. Let's say Eventually, The End of the entirety of The Omniverse,, the song that sings itself upon the tale of the tale that speaks of itself, were to speak of it's end, and stop singing. What then? Eventually the End has to End, and so The Dream dreams itself anew. In theory, on a grand, cosmological scale, everything exists in cycles. But that doesn't mean Magnus could slip through those cycles forever. Everything Ends, eventually. And then nothing ends, again.
Well the Web had other plans lol
Until his eyes rotted out of his skull, of course.
Bad communication got the Web to win.
It's not bad communication, it's stupid Archivist.
didn't they plan to do this? except for jon and martin dying. but the "killing the eye" thing. i mean it went into other dimensions right?
@@thedistinguished5255 Yes, they dumped the fears down the reality hole into other dimensions. I'm SURE the Fears won't EVER be back hahahahhaha
The Web knew this would happen. It primed Martin to trust Annabelle rather than Jon, everyone turned on Jon always so he went crazy with guilt, then they 'voted' to terrorize the multiverse so Jon went on his own to try to take over and kill the Fears. He would've succeeded perhaps if Martin hadn't betrayed him and told the others to go early, preventing Jon from securing the building. Martin's need to control Jon (out of love, sure, but still control) was part of this. The Web tugged at Georgie, making her want the Web's special lighter, and when Georgie asked to keep it, Jon didn't even hear her, the Web deleted the knowledge from his mind like always. So Georgie had the special lighter to set the gas main on fire.
Nothing Annabelle said could be trusted. It was all manipulation. Martin WAS the Web's agent of control without being aware of it, just as Jon was used without being aware of it.
I'm not sure what happened. Jon could have been pulled along with the Eye, like Annabelle planned on doing. But Martin? Maybe. Haven't watched the Protocol yet.
Guys, I'm crying, as you all also probably are but... they kissed. We have to at least be happy that the last thing Jon and Martin did in this episode was say I love you and kiss.

genius bit of audio editing adding to the narrative: john's voice is consistently his elevated avatar voice throughout and then the web's tapes start pulling around 18:32, and we get consistent tape noise until a tape-scratch at 19:36 and then we're dropped into an intimate moment. it's just martin and john -- no tape (hence no web), no avatar voice (hence no eye), just them. two people, whispering to each other in their final moments, honest and real. "where you go, i go." "that's the deal." and then the tape noise starts back up again. why does the web give them this moment? it doesn't matter, i don't think, in the end. what matters is that john and martin have a moment to re-anchor themselves, recommit to each other using lines that sound like vows. til death, but hopefully not to part. god, i love this podcast.

The hero's journey mixed with a dash of dante's inferno, mixed with rom com goodness and heartache was fantastic. Thanks for a solid two months of company while i work my lonely night shifts. Seriously. Thank you.
I just marathoned the whole series in a few weeks. My thoughts:
- So The Web won? The fears got to escape into other universes?
- It sounds like they were created here, from the primitive life that existed soon after the earth cooled. Not from another universe. So that means The Web really got it's wish. To spread throughout the multiverse. Hopefully they can't duplicate the process.
- I saw a comment that suggested Jon & Martin got sucked into whatever world the Fears went to. So hopefully Jon's in a hospital, with Martin by his bedside.
Wow, this series was great. I'm sad that it had an unhappy ending. But it was a great think piece along the way. Good show, Olde Chap.
So, you know how Jon, Martin, the tapes and the Dread powers got sucked into other universes, and now we are able to listen to the tapes? Therefore, the tapes are clearly present in our universe...
Doesn't that imply that all along we were listening to tapes from a different universe, and now the Dread powers are in our universe...
This is also supported by the fact that The Magnus Institute does not appear to have ever existed in our world and I don't recall experiencing any apocalyptic nightmare hellscapes.
@@bookend2002 Yes.
I feel like the dread jumps from one world to the next so each world has a chanse to stop it
They weren’t necessarily created here remember it said Fear wasn’t sure if it just came to be or it if came here “but then it became. Or perhaps it always was and simply entered”

THE MAGNUS ARCHIVES SURE WAS A PODCAST HUH
IT SURE WAS AHAHA. AHAHAHAH. HAH. HAHAHA. HAAAAAAA.
this ending works well because jon, martin and melanie all acted upon the fears that controlled them, or could be interpreted that way, even if they found logical justifications for their plans.
Melanie made sure jonah dying painfully was part of the plan, jon chose the path for himself where he would see the most fear the fastest like an addict, and martin told everyone to go early to ensure the webs plan was in motion regardless of what jon would do, then went after jon alone
all whilst, you know, desperately trying not to act upon fears and give in, all whilst trying to destroy those very things that control them
Erm. Jon took over so other innocents wouldn't be tortured as well. And so he could kill the Fears. As it is, the Fears can come back. A big problem was that no one ever took Jon seriously. They dismissed his feelings over their own desires. It makes too much sense that things were set up that way by the Web.

Okay, so now that the initial sadness wore off, i have a question that's nagging me.
Assuming that the tapes got carried along with the Fears into another reality (presumably ours?), what about that last bit with Georgie, Melanie and Basira, which happened after all was done? How did it reach us? Does that imply that the Web still has some amount of influence in the TMA reality? Or am i just reading too much into this?

So, I'm in college, and I got an esa to help with my mental health. Long story short, I ended up with a feral cat. This was in September. And as weird as this sounds, when I first got him home, I started sitting with him and listening to this podcast with him, as well as reading to him. He loves it. When he started becoming more comfortable and more active, we stopped listening as much, because it was really hard to find a private spot for the two of us to listen together. Yesterday my cat got some vaccines, and the seem to have made him not feel very well today. He got put in the bathroom for the first time since he came, and in an attempt to get him to relax, I put on this podcast. I am just in awe of this webseries. I don't even know what to do now. Well, I'm gonna listen to the whole thing all over again.... And then find the other podcasts I hope? But I don't think I will ever find something this amazing. I'm both glad i got to experience this, and very, very sad that it is over. But perhaps it'll be fun starting from the beginning with the knowledge I have now, connecting all the dots again. Thank you so much, rusty quill.
This series man… it kills me every time. Masterfully written, and I can’t say that I’ve ever heard any story better. Congratulations to the writers of rusty quill, you’ve won, nothing will ever beat this.
Well… maybe Protocol… we’ll see
new fan here ! 👁️ i started listening to TMA about a month ago, and it honestly carried me through the past weeks. i will without doubt relisten, thank you so much to everyone involved in the making. what a journey
A new fan as well! There’s a sequel by the way 👀
ive been so bored at work lately that i have listened to the whole tma TWICE in the last 2 months to keep myself occupied. ive listened to this whole podcast 5 times in total and it hits every time
First time finisher, what a trip this was. The only shame is that I came 3 years late
I just want to say, I loved and still love this series dearly and I thank every person who was involved with the making of it. You're all extremely bright and talented people and my only regret is that I may never be even half as talented or as clever as you guys.
Thank you for creating The Magnus Archives (even if I did sob loudly at 2:30AM over Jon and Martin because of it).
I choose to believe Jon and Martin survived and went somewhere else where they could be together and free of the Fears. Maybe they're still pointing out cows to each other to this day.
Getting this notif was emotional whiplash of the highest calibre, _jesus._ I can't tell if seeing that the AR sidequest was posted was better or worse than this
tell me why the only thought produced by my only braincell rn after finishing this masterpiece for the first time is just the word "penoptiJohn" on repeat
Man I just don't have words. This was my favorite work of fiction I've ever experienced, bar none.
Omg I finally finished it, I loved this so much! Thank you for this amzing and horrifying journey!
There was once a girl with a name and no face,
And a woman who lost herself to the embrace
of the hive, and a foolish curator of books
destroyed by his ego, success overlooked,
And a man of the heights, one of falling and mirth
shot by the wolf, and left choked by the earth,
And a being of lies, hidden behind closed doors,
and the girl who replaced it not herself anymore,
And a brute clawed to death, partner one and the same,
All the masks and a martyr who went up in flames
for revenge, and a captain consumed by the mist,
alone and content to no longer be missed,
And a thing that stole faces and names in its glee,
then crumbled as soon as all eyes turned to see
And a girl of inferno who put up a fight,
burnt out into ash in the watcher's sight
And a giant of bones among orchids and roses,
but powerless against the gaze that opposes
And the hunters: of vampires and the darkness of night,
her murdered by kin, him shot out of spite,
by the friend of the wolf that caused havoc and dread;
and put down by desire with a shot to the head,
And a brute from the pair from way back when,
begged for release to stand beside him again,
And a merchant of fear safe in his own oasis,
Left to rot - thank the spider - thought he sat in good graces,
And woman whose hallways were never understood,
laced with lies then dismantled where both had once stood,
And the man due for greatness, in the eye of the storm,
who ascended beyond his stolen mortal form,
and watched all the terror brought into the realm,
by the tainted messiah, and his love, at the helm,
And the knife that brought blindness as both eyes were slain,
lost in rubble,
and only their statements remained.
This needs to be pinned. *chef’s kiss* Well done. 😊
i decided to listen to the whole thing all the way through *checks time* about a week ago. and here i am, 4:48 in the morning, listening to the final tape click off.
what a ride, i knew this was going to be good when i was first recommended it two ish years ago, right around the time these videos were posted. i listened up to episode 90 on spotify before the app stopped working and i moved on for a bit, but i've had a blast this past week and i'm pretty sure everyone else in this comment section had a blast as well. frankly, i with there was more, though i guess that falls to us seeing as the series is over.
now i just have to get my brothers into it so i can enjoy it all again and hear their theories.
The first time i cried during this series. I'm fucking depressed now..
Thankgod fanfiction is but still. Wtf i will never forget this wonderful experience of listening to such a mind-blowing and enjoyable podcast that i found through tiktok suggesting there's whimpering men and a great story. :)
which tiktok sent u here?
Brilliant. Got my heart broken with that ending on the official Rusty site, and here to have it broken again.
Whyyyyy😭😭😭 Such a great series, but that ending you guys. It's by far the most imaginative version of "bury your gays" I've ever seen.
Ending aside, it would have been really nice to see Jon trust his friends and not do the same thing he spent the entire series doing. For all he went through, in the end he succumbed to hubris.
(Moral of the story is guilt will make you make terrible decisions)
And Martin! A literal avatar of the LONELY, chooses to go to hell in order to be with his boyfriend. It could be a nice development for his character, overcoming his fear, but personally I was never convinced of Martin's lonely connection, even with his backstory. Maybe it was Alex's performance, but he just seemed like a very open, very loving people-person from beginning to end, and seeing him give in to Peter Lucas just seemed like an odd and out of character phase to me.
I enjoyed this podcast so much, I binged all 200 episodes in a matter of days. The team did a phenomenal job and the writing was so so beautiful! Wrapping up something so big and so intricate is tricky, especially given the attention to detail throughout all the story, and how airtight the plot was.
It was a good ending, matching the theme of hope and despair of the whole series, and an emotional roller coaster right to the very last minute. But I would have loved for Jon and Martin to have been okay. I get that it's a horror story and a straightforward happy ending would feel out of place, but them ending like that... They deserved more.
But since we don't know that they died, does that mean we could get a sequel following them through the other dimensions?? 👀
Enh. I blame the others. They mistreated Jon from beginning to end, even Martin. If everybody votes to torture a kid, are you prideful to say "Hell no"? Martin knew Jon wouldn't go along with it, and rather than confronting him, he backstabbed Jon by telling the others to go ahead and blow the place up. And Annabelle was pushing things in this direction as well. Georgie didnt get the Web lighter by accident. It was the One Ring of this scenario, conveniently falling from its previous owner to a new one to serve it. (Possibly why there was a tape recorder still there at the end. The recorders followed the lighter. And an example that the Web's power still works even though everyone thinks its gone and they're safe haha)
Time for round 2 of this EP
Thank you. Really. This podcast saved me
I think this maybe be top three peaces of fiction ever for me now..... goddamn what a ride
Y'all are wrong for this. Its been weeks and I'm still trying to make up theories on their survival to comfort myself.
You need some fix its ?
There's no definite endings so you can't be wrong lol... But I get it, gosh
I chose to believe they are happy in some alternate dimension. Alive, happy, and in love. And nothing will change my mind.
MAGNUS ARCHIVES 2?
good news the magnus protocol
I haven't even gotten through 5 minutes and I'm already violently sobbing. I just know this episode is going to hurt so badly, and I'm really amazed at how this all tied together. Sims did a wonderful job, despite the heartbreak that I was not prepared for in my creepy archivist horror podcast, congrats for the finished series, though I am a bit late, it was a wonderful journey
I managed to binge watch this entire thing in 10 days. Could’ve been less. Fourth to fourteenth. It’s been fun ^^
thank you, Rusty Quill, from 2022 ♥
This was beautiful, I loved it the first time and there is just so much left open that I have been in a state of overdrive for the past few months because of how much fanfic fuel it gave me.
Started listening to this last October, my friend recommended me "Welcome to Nightvale" and saw how much I liked it but hated that I only listen to spooky things in the fall
She recommended this and after the first few episodes I couldn't stop listening, Halloween passed and there I was putting it on still cause I needed to know, I wanted to listen. My favorite coincidence was on my birthday I started season 5... When they all sang Happy Birthday to Jon and we got to see everyone again, honestly that was one hell of a gift~
I AM SO DEVASTATED, oh my gosh. I should have known I'd be devastated one way or another, but did you have to rip my heart from my chest like that? 😢😂 In all seriousness, this ending was such a well crafted tragedy! Oh, what a wild ride this podcast was from beginning to end.
