As a Portland native it is great to hear the champ talk about Portland wrestling. I grew up watching it on KPTV in Portland. Great memories. I even met Don Owen as a kid at one of the Saturday night shows in the 1980’s.

I remember being a kid and watching Sandy Barr Portland wrestling back in the late 80s. I'd try not to fall asleep waiting for it to come on. I think GLOW wrestling came on shortly after Portland wrestling if I remember.

From what I heard Don Owen was one of the fair promoters. Any thoughts on Paul Boesch(Houston)?

Patera, Portland is his hometown, but I don't think he ever actually wrestled here.

Don had the reputation of being one of the best pay-off men around, the Northwest wasn't the biggest promotion around, it's take-in wasn't great, but he always paid exactly what was promised. He didn't pay a penny more than that but he never paid a penny less. His brother Elton who ran Eugene and Southern Oregon on the other hand, he was the very definition of the word cheap, from his choice of suits and cigars to his attempts at cheating wrestlers with both hands.

The classic Don Owen story is that he'd always give the wrestlers on the Thanksgiving match frozen turkeys. One year the midget wrestlers were featured on the Thanksgiving match. When they went to the designated grocery store to redeem their free turkey gift tickets, they were presented with Cornish game hens. COLD BLOODED - LOLOL.
