All it is now is who does the "coolest" highspot.. there is really no long term story telling. I liked it better when they didn't have a ppv every month
What's right back then, that's missing today imo- the business was presented as more sport than entertainment. It felt like championships were really being chased, storylines were built, championships could change hands at house shows, and rivalries were really heated. But, that's just what I think.
Kayfabe money is the biggest missing component these days. These guys are supposed to be there to earn a living, so being champion means more money, getting fines for breaking the rules (run in attacks, etc) means less money, getting suspended means less money, winning matches means more money. And it helps the other way too. This rivalry is so heated I'll take the fine for punching him backstage, I want to get my hands on him so bad I'll take an unsanctioned (therefore unpaid) match. The earnings used to be such a key component in the storytelling.
I remember staying up till 11:30pm on Saturday night and watching wrestling with my grandfather. I think I was 7 or 8 years old at the time. I really cherished those times.
My totally old-school-biased top "5", imho: RP and Nature Boy are interchangeable as THE top two of all time. The other 3 places go to The Rock/Stone Cold (tied), Hogan/Savage/Warrior (3-way tied), and maybe Snuka/Foley/Shawn Michaels/'Taker (4-way tie). Honorable mentions (or maybe just a whole other list) for Bret Hart, Kurt Angle, Bob Backlund, Rob Van Dam, Super Crazy, Eddie Guerrero, and Terry Funk. Sorry, you can call me indecisive if you want-there's way too much talent in the classic roster.
Piper was a genius him and Dusty my all time favs RIP. Great to watch these old clips reminds me of when i was a kid. I had one pawpaw loved wrestling, one hated it. When i went to my dads parents i got caught up on my wrestling. Miss those days
When wrestling was wrestling beautiful man this is a very good classic I remember all this stuff every Saturday morning or Saturday evening after cartoons and fishing shows
I was 7years old when this aired, I have enjoyed watching this video, I would love to see 1 of Flair and Greg Valentine when they were the N.W.A. tag team champions.
This took place right here in Raleigh, NC thirty-three years ago this month and it seems like it was yesterday. This was RASSLING' and not SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT!!!
+JohnBlack2345 Yea, now there called "International Objects." And I'm like, whatever. I'm so glad that I used the smarts the good Lord gave me, I stopped watching that crap. And by that crap, I'm referring to the wrestling that's on TV today, cos its nothing but a garbage dump snooze fest. This video here however, is CLASSIC!!! But I sure's hell cant say that about the crap they have on TV these days. I'll pass.
JohnBlack2345: they were later called "INTERNATIONAL" objects, because the F-word was now the N-word in terms of racism toward other countries. I AM NOT MAKING THAT UP.
I loved that match!! I love both Roddy and Flair! Rick wanted to talk about getting punched it the face with a foreign object lol! Like Rick never cheated LMAO loved it!!!!
Two masters of the microphone. Rest In Peace, Hot Rod. They didn't make as much money back then, so I wonder if the coat Flair ripped up was from the Good Will.
That video clip has the same quality as all my old tapes of Wrestling from the eighties, wore out from repeated recording. It's an ode to the love we had for Wrestling before it became Wrasslin. If you want a real laugh put on Closed Captioning.
Now we got "Pretty Boy" Scooter Boo and Meatball Robinson (525 pounds)defending the Soap and Water tag team titles against Kris Jenner and Khloe Kardashian in a cage. smh..
It really sucks that Piper died, he was one of the true great heels of wrestling. Every-time I see anything with Piper, I still think of him hitting Jimmy Snuka with that coconut on Piper Pit.
Carl Lawton many of the black wrestlers talked about how racist he was. I liked Piper until I saw the interview he did with Rocky Johnson and Tony Atlas talking about chitlin and watermelon. Fuck him.
@@Batony Thanks for the info. When we got cable TV up here in CT. back in ,1981I found out about Georgia Championship Wrestling and would watch it every Saturday afternoon. Thought it was a lot better than Vince McMahon's lame stuff. Then a couple of years later WWF grabbed all the good wrestlers WCW & NWA.

Where did you get this footage? it's classic! Do you have the promo where Greg Valentine brags about breaking Flair's nose and he says "It always was a big nose but at least it was straight. Now it's crooked"! LOL
Thank you Mr John Black 2345 The CRAP they call wrestling TODAY, will never measure. The WRESTLERS did the promoting , all the announcers had to do was tell the dates and locations.
Today's wrestlers could only DREAM of cutting vinettes and promos like this. These days are sadly, long gone!
All it is now is who does the "coolest" highspot.. there is really no long term story telling. I liked it better when they didn't have a ppv every month
These confrontations and promos really pumped up the hype and excitement leading up to big matches. This is what I really miss!
kenpalmer1965 ,. Me too I watched all these matches when I was a kid these kids today don't know good wrestling
I will watch the “old stuff” over and over rather than tune in to ANY of the crap that passes for Rasslin today...
Same here
Yup
Amen to that times 10! 🙏 🙏
exactly they will NEVER have the type of entertainment today that they did back then, the wrestlers today are a bore
Amen
Two of the best talkers of all time.
Roddy Piper was the single best thing to have happened to wrestling entertainment for he was endlessly entertaining.
Agreed!
My all time favorite

RIP Roddy. One of the Greatest of all time!
They did this great confrontation and in real life, were great friends.
I remember staying up till 11:30pm on Saturday night and watching wrestling with my grandfather. I think I was 7 or 8 years old at the time. I really cherished those times.
2 of the top 5 GREATEST wrastlers ever
1- Hogan
2- Macho Man
3- Piper
4- Flair
5 Andre the Giant
My totally old-school-biased top "5", imho:

1. Flair
2. Piper
3. Muraco
4. Macho Man
5. Superfly Snuka
That's the list.
I like how flair put over the TV belt instead of tossing it to the side like it was beneath him
Piper was a genius him and Dusty my all time favs RIP. Great to watch these old clips reminds me of when i was a kid. I had one pawpaw loved wrestling, one hated it. When i went to my dads parents i got caught up on my wrestling. Miss those days
I remember watching this on T.V. when I was like 10-11 yrs old !! Remember this like it was earlier today !! :-)
I like the old wrestling better especially Mid-Atlantic and Georgia Championship Wrestling
When wrestling was wrestling beautiful man this is a very good classic I remember all this stuff every Saturday morning or Saturday evening after cartoons and fishing shows
Two of "THE" gr8est talkers and workers in the game!!!!! ;-)
"Here comes the Slim Whitman of wrestling, woo, woo!" Roddy was hilarious.
The two best talkers ever in professional wrestling! Hands down!
This was great to watch, love those day's on life. Rip Roddy
I was 7years old when this aired, I have enjoyed watching this video, I would love to see 1 of Flair and Greg Valentine when they were the N.W.A. tag team champions.
Both are legends!!!
I remember watching this when I was 10 years old I just started watching wrestling then those were the good old days
This took place right here in Raleigh, NC thirty-three years ago this month and it seems like it was yesterday. This was RASSLING' and not SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT!!!
Wtf is 'Rassling'?...
LOL!!! It was an old school term that Jack Brisco used to use quite often to refer to professional wrestling.
This was about the time when Piper won the title from Flair and Flair was getting ready to win the 10 lbs. of gold (World Title)
I gotta say I'm more used to Ric being the heel while Roddy's the face but I have to say that either man plays either role quite well.
I love Flair, but Piper just completely outshines him here. Great work by both guys.
Flair is just being a vanilla babyface, not the REAL Flair
Two absolute legends. Wow.
Two of the best. Classic.❤
Roddy Piper: Pro wrestling’s embodiment of The Joker.
Definitely the agent of chaos!
Piper on that Aries shit gang gang

Love these old school promos.
the infamous foreign objects. Whatever this crap is today it will NEVER compare to pro wrestling back in the day.
so true

Rest in peace and know we will miss you.
I loved that match!! I love both Roddy and Flair! Rick wanted to talk about getting punched it the face with a foreign object lol! Like Rick never cheated LMAO loved it!!!!
Flair never did any under handed tricks, I modeled my career after him.
If you ever seen either one of us, we never cheated.
Roddy Piper won the U.S. title from Ric Flair in Raleigh N.C. on 1-27-1981.
Great to know!!!
Two of the best EVER.
This segment between Flair and Piper is better than the WWF I used to watch at the time I love this.
I don't know if it ever got any better than this.
One of the most hysterical angles ever shot in pro wrestling. It as perfect!
two of the greatest talkers of all time :)
Ty this brings back great memories of my youth when wrestling was really wrestling
"I don't wear rented tuxedos & I don't run around in a skirt"....lmao
Piper was a great heel talker.
Lol just like Christmas.
"Slim Whitman of wrestling", classic Piper. You are greatly missed Hot Rod.
One of the greatest rivalries in sports entertainment
Piper-Hogan was better, in the cartoon at least.
Piper looks like Jack Tripper.
lol, what a blast from the past
😆
Piper vs Flair is equivalent to King Kong vs Godzilla.
Wow this video shows how television used to look like in the early 80's
Two masters of the microphone. Rest In Peace, Hot Rod. They didn't make as much money back then, so I wonder if the coat Flair ripped up was from the Good Will.
Lmao
Used Car Salesmen "R" Us
They made a ton of money back then too.
It was a prop, probably made by the ladies making robes and ring jackets. Some of the wives made their stuff too.
That US Title looks better than the current one.
Even Piper wore the famous kilt before the WWE.
piper was such a great talker.
piper was brilliant in this.
That,s Old School 👈 I Miss the Golden Age of Wrestling . 2 Greatest Trash talkers of All Time.
Who would have known 25 years later they’d be tag champs together
"probably drounding from the size of his nose running" 🤣🤣
this was amazing tv
This is how you cut promos.
definitely!
Piper was always one step away from a psychotic episode.
Ric Flar has been 60 years old since 1981.
Cruising youtube and as I see older and older video of him, I'm becoming convinced he was never young.
just a little before my time, but I am old enough to remember these 2 becoming the 2 greatest heels of my childhood, though for different leagues
That video clip has the same quality as all my old tapes of Wrestling from the eighties, wore out from repeated recording. It's an ode to the love we had for Wrestling before it became Wrasslin. If you want a real laugh put on Closed Captioning.
These people are the greatest actors.
The Slim Whitman AND the Mae West of Pro Wrestling! LMAO!!
Love it, love it, love it!
Back when wrestling was real, and you woulda never convinced my 8 yr old self any different🤣🤣Damn, Piper was the Greatest!
I can't believe this was in 1981.
Bob Caudle with the smirk on his face. He knows he is seeing a genius at work, R.I.P. Rod Toombs.
This is when you were young, that you were scared to go to the show live. Somebody was gonna get hurt. It was great.
Perhaps Roddy's finest moment.
I freaking love this!
Loved this feud. They were both amazing. This is real wrestling, not the crap they have today.
Piper....Classic Piper. We miss you Hot Rod.
One of the funniest ever moments in pro wrestling.
Greatness!!
Piper's had about 4 voice Gimmicks...lol ..The screech when he went wild was off the chain.
How good is this? Piper was fantastic.
I DO miss the territories from back then. You know, when kayfabe was protected like Fort Knox.
Yes, Territories were great
I was that "young man" who caught the foreign object and gave it to Ric.
True story...in my head.
Rowdy Roddy Jack Tripper Piper.
Piper promo gold
The best! All ad libbed.
Now we got "Pretty Boy" Scooter Boo and Meatball Robinson (525 pounds)defending the Soap and Water tag team titles against Kris Jenner and Khloe Kardashian in a cage. smh..
Spoonie G: you really CAN'T go home again.
I'm sorry... WHO?!

PIPER THE GREATEST WRESTLER OF ALL TIMES
No lie. Was making a sandwich, end of the bread, two heels. Ftw

Agree...lol

Interesting how they had Georgia on their map, when it was it's own territory, and one of the most popular TV shows on WTBS at the time.
I think Ole was booking both territories at the time.
