Making a Wood and Epoxy Resin Dragon Egg - Lichtenberg Figure Project

- A Dragon Egg Woodturning project I saw on a Lichtenberg Figure group and it inspired me to make my own. Wood is sycamore, very white and its split a fair bit whilst it dried out. Epoxy resin gives a great deep gloss finish I find.
Turned on my lathe whilst mostly wet it came off easily enough, i used the Alf Rose carbide chisel with a round head for the majority and a skew chisel to true off the base and the bit around the tailstock.
Gave it a good zapping with the Microwave transformer rig and seawater as the solution. I was careful not to get the electric arcing into the 'Base' of this piece. It struggled a bit to travel up and across the curvature of the wood and took multiple wettings. Once done it was scrubbed with a nylon brush under running water to clear excess burn.
Colouring and staining the egg I used a spirit based ink and then diluted with acetone, the acetone evaporates and dries cleanly and carries the colour deep in to the wood. Lightly flick on white paint from a toothbrush to create a galaxy starfield effect using acrylic paint.
The acetone is basic nail varnish remover available from most high street shops for a few pounds or dollars. amzn.to/2pR3jjD

The base was stained with a potassium permangenate mix to add some colour and then finished with osmo polyx.
The egg itself was finished with 2 part epoxy resin varnish Sadolin PV67, good stuff, paints on and settles into a nice clear finish. Rub back with fine wire wool between coats. You can apply multiple coats to give a thick glass like appearance.

Thanks for the video it's been awhile.
Ive got stuff, finding the editing a bit harder going now.
Your editing in this is great Mate must be taking hours!
Ah mate, that laser video took hours upon hours, one like this in about 4 or 5 if im lucky. Honestly the editing takes longer than the project sometimes.
hello Maestro, shared on Facebook 👍💯💯👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Molte grazie, sei molto gentile!
@@thepoultrypeople please 👍
Those massive crosscut saws aren't the easiest things in the world to use on your own are they.
Great video! I've been waiting for this since I saw the egg at Makers Central.
That's beautiful.
* no dragons were harmed in the making of this egg
That’s really cool, cheers Bongo.

P. S. That’s a real objay-dart.
Will Butters try to hatch the egg 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Oooh, that conjures up some stange images 😄
For a man with a beard like bongos , a man who casually has strokes on RUclips ffs haha! (glad your ok) I wouldn't expect something so beautiful it really doesn't look like wood in the end.
