@@PerplexedTheta I'm currently recording a shoegaze album myself, about a girl I was once with, who once made me happier than anyone else in the world, and hope I made her happy too, and we literally broke up a few days ago, but we will remain friends (it's a complicated situation, and what caused us to break up was beyond either of our control)... and I will still finish recording the album, and still be her friend through these times, even if we can't be together
This is Slowdive. Neil recorded 4 demos in a cabin or something privately and came back and Dagger was one of the songs. Once in the studio it went through a few versions from what I recall before getting to the album. This is one of those versions. Neil is singing it.
The sunshine girl is sleeping She falls and dreams alone And me I am her dagger Too numb to feel her pain The world is full of noise yeah I hear it all the time And me I am your dagger You know I am your wound I thought I heard you whisper It happens all the time I thought I heard you whisper It happens all the time She whispers while I'm sleeping: "I love you when you smile" I didn't really lose you I just lost it for a while The world is full of noise yeah I hear it all the time You know I am your dagger You know I am your wound I thought I heard you whisper It happens all the time I thought I heard you whisper It happens all the time
To anyone who's wondering if this is fake, When Neil spoke about Dagger in the Pitchfork Classics Slouvaki doc, he mentioned recording this demo (along with demos for Machine Gun and 40 Days) in a cabin up north all alone. They use this recording in the documentary leading me to believe its legit
Like Neil said, this demo has the lonely feeling from the cabin in which he was living... When I hear it, I think of Neil, strumming his guitar while looking at the sun and the sky, singing, and almost crying...
So it’s very specifically a Neil Halstead solo song, not a Slowdive song as the title advertises, since 80% of Slowdive had no input. Thank you for clearing up the mislabeling of this song. Hopefully the uploader will correct the title, but that would cause it to get fewer views, so we know it won’t be corrected.
@@ibelieveicansoar guess it depends. Technically this demo is just Neil but it he wrote and recorded it specifically for Slowdive (with the final version ending up on Souvlaki), so I don’t think it’s erroneous to say this is a Slowdive demo
@@rusolarusso8372 And for that reason, this song is hitting me much harder than usual tonight... just went through a breakup myself, and it is quite possibly similar to what happened to Neil and Rachel (she left me due to some issues on her side, but we have agreed to remain friends)... similarly to Neil, I then proceeded to record five demos at home (four of which I wrote after the breakup), and will likely include some of those on a future album (incidentally, I will probably use some of them on the first ever shoegaze album I'll record, most of my stuff up till now has been psychedelic rock... I'll release it sometime in autumn, after my noise rock album which is set to be released later this July)
This should've been on the actual album, even at this recording quality - it would've been an interesting "lo-fi" end, like "My Mummy's Dead" at the end of Lennon's Plastic Ono Band. Also, ingonish7 hit the nail on the head.
Matt Silvey yeah i wrote this comment a year ago about someone from long ago. Yet the music makes me feel like she is still beside me at times (sounds stupid AF lol)
Wow, you can really feel the hurt in his voice when he says "I didn't really lose you, I just lost it for awhile."
If this isn't 'bout Rachel I'm Stevie Wonder
Croissantiste it’s definitely about rachel
@@offtop5784 For sure. A relatable pain, at one time in my life! Dating friends or trying to befriend exes is a bad time.

The song is amazing one of the best demos I have heard from them
the acoustic version somehow hits me harder emotionally, but this ones just plain beautiful
I am completely agreed with your point of view!
the most beautiful version ever, hurts even more, a real dagger :'(
Neil and Rachel are the Gods of Shoegaze
Sure
second to Kevin and Bilinda

I prefer this version than the album's version. There is more nostalgia than there.
twin peaks
YES
Neil's last "it happens all the time" sounded so sad
It sounds like...Daniel Jonston shoegaze.
I discovered daniel johnston through this comment, and i absolutely love him. thank you

Yeah I can hear it lmao
Call it by its name: Hi,-How-Are-You-gaze
I love this version sm
Wow! You can really hear a Twin Peaks/Angelo Badalamenti influence here.
It's not influenced by Twin Peaks
it's just 90s

good question, i'm not sure because it's on a bootleg album of unreleased tracks
Me encanta la voz de Neil ♡♡
Magical
1:30 sonds like summer daze from them :)
reminds me of a beloved ex
+PKSkyler thats exactly what this song is about
spacebusdriver yep I know
.
+PKSkyler makes me think of my highschool sweet heart. this was the anthem of my life when I was younger. music is powerful

The lsd version
this one hurts just way too much
oh yea!!!!!!!
anyone else agree this is standard tuning capo on first fret, verse chords are c and Asus?
+Andrew Trujillo I concur.
+Andrew Trujillo it's not a traditonal C, watch the recent videos of reunited Slowdive to see the chording
For the C, pick up the e in the middle and let the d ring open, I'm pretty sure that's how they do it.
For Dagger I play Standard Tuning with verse chords as Cadd9 and Asus
I like playing this song in half step down tuning with similar chords to what your saying.
Whoa, where did you get this???
damn a 12 year old comment
Been around online since I can remember. I’m 34. Found when I was 17?
nice
This is legit the saddest song I’ve ever heard
Key and tempo?
The recording quality seams a lot better, or maybe its that the guitars are tuned a little tighter here.prefer the acoustic version .

yes

thats the good version tbh the other one is kinda weak imho
I think that Simon was pretty when he was young
The albums version is good but I feel that the piano kind of drags it down
WHY CAN I HEAR TYPYING SOUNDS AM I TRIPPING
um, this isn't really Slowdive is it?
It's Neil Halstead demo of 'Dagger' when he was in a cabin. He also wrote "40 Days" and "Machine Gun" in the same period her was up there in 1992.
wtf?
Was a different band member other than Neil singing this? Otherwise I have to call fake
I don’t like the vocals much on the electric version
This is nice, but the acoustic version is definitely better. It's much more affecting and bereft than this version, IMO.
i can happily say i saw these foos in LA last weeknd
I wonder what their lives were like
