Simply right-click the image, save the file, and open it with whatever photo viewer you use. When you go to click print, make sure it is not being “fit to size” or anything like that, uncheck any boxes that say that. It should take up most of a piece of paper. Please cut out the pattern and tape it together, then try your hood in it, before making the leather hood.
To resize the hood protector pattern, open the pattern in any basic photo editing software, and pull the corner of the image down to whatever size you need. Remember to tape and test the resized pattern before attempting to make the hood protector.
What you’ll need to make this hood protector:

    Materials:
6-8 oz leather, or any thick, stiff leather
Thread; I used artificial sinew, waxed dental floss works great

Is there somewhere I can go to found out how and why this was created to begin with. How it was found out that this would even work.

***** You'll have to reach back centuries, if not millennia. Falconry is an ancient sport, with different roots found all over the world. I believe the earliest work in any European language was created in the 15th or 17th century? It's similar to putting blinders on a horse, or covering the head of an unruly animal like a rabbit. Out of sight, out of mind.

Very interesting to know. I'm surprised the hawk or bird would allow you to put something over their eyes. The unknown would scare me.
Thank you for answering my question. It just didn't seem logical.

Could you please proved the dimensions of the leather? I see no measurements on the pattern.

Can I ask what these hoods are for. I don't understand why you would cover a birds eyes so they can't see. I've searched for an answer and can't find one, only how to make one. I would be interested in reading about the reasoning.

Linda, you're correct, the hoods are for covering the bird's eyes so that they cannot see. Raptors operate chiefly off of sight, when they can't see they basically "shut down" until their vision is restored. This phenomenon is useful when harnessed, as it allows falconers to control the stimuli their bird receives. In other words, you can keep your bird calm for transport, you can prevent your bird from panicking in the face of certain circumstances like, for instance, around other raptors or new dogs, and you can keep your hawk from bating if you need to carry it any distance. Hoods are very useful.
