  • November Macro Photography competition results - the video
Here they all are - quite a few Honorable Mentions and three winners (A 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd place winner). A difficult competition that would have been even harder without the help I got from Rik Littlefield, who was a huge help in going through all the entries! Watch the video to see who won what and why.
See Patreon, my website (www.allanwallsphotography.com) or Discord for some permanent rule changes that will take effect starting with the December 2022 macro competition.
If you are interested in being a guest judge for this competition in 2023, I am looking for four of you and we will work together - it will take a couple of hours and it will be great fun. You need to have a decent understanding of macro photography but you don’t need any judging experience - I’ll show you how to do it.
Got a couple of links for you - when you use one of these links to visit Amazon or Adorama, and if you then make a qualifying purchase, Amazon gives me a small payment that goes directly to paying the bills over at AWP. You don’t pay a penny extra.
No photography stuff to talk about this week, but there is some serious gear talk coming up very soon (think “bugs in flight!”) this week, but I needed a new tool - Would you like to see my new angle grinder? @
How about the Adorama deal on MF12 clones from Flashpoint - adorama.rfvk.net/c/2372132/11... only $69 a piece - that is almost $40 less than the branded ones!
    ME & MY GEAR
    (or my gear and I)
When in the studio I use the Nikon D850 as my main camera - @
It is always wearing a gorgeous black device called a 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom - my favorite video and portrait lens - @
Other cameras that are used as needed include a Nikon D7500 - @
    A Nikon D3400 for emergencies - @
    A Fujifilm XT-2, with a battery grip - @
Without any Fuji glass, I use a TS adapter from Kipon and any Nikkor lens I like - it is an awesome TS adapter - @
I use Audio Technica shotgun microphones in the studio, - @
but I also have a Pro Caster from Australian mic-maker Rode - @
who also make my DSLR microphone - @
and my wireless microphone system - @
I record all my sound separately onto the awesome Zoom H5 Digital Audio Recorder. - @
I forgot to mention my trusty GoPro Hero 8 Black, complete with the Media Mod for on the go video - amzn.to/2UScm3J & @
That is just some of the stuff I use - if you have any questions about my macro gear, or my recording equipment, just ask.
All my audio, music and sound effects comes for Epidemic Sound - I have been with them for about 3 years and they are pretty awesome - @
All the photography you see on my channel, in my videos and on my website, was done by me. I tell you that so that you know I would never blame another photographer for my photographic mediocrity. But I love taking pictures, so I do.

Wanted to thank you for the honorable Mention! Really made me feel good. Good thing I didn’t look at the entries before I posted or I might have chickened out! Congratulations to all, great stuff!

I'm sitting here eating my dinner and you said my name for 2nd place! I almost choked on my food. Thank you so much for all your kind words, Allan. What you do is amazingly inspirational. Thank you.

Just calling it as I see it! I would like to know if you have explored this kind of image further, with other subjects, maybe, but the same low key subtlety? Do you post your images on a public platform like Flickr? I would very much like to see what else you have come up with along these lines. Anyway, congratulations and keep up the amazing work. There are half a dozen regular competition entrants whose entries never fail to teach me something and are full of delightful surprises. You probably know who the other five are and it puts you in very strong company. It is photographers like you that provide the inspiration for those with less experience - all I do is show your work to them.

@@AllanWallsPhotography Thank you. I have been struggling to find many subjects lately. It's Winter here and I have the classic Winter 'artist-block'. I've just gotten into macro a few months ago. Right now I have a pretty basic set up. A Laowa 85mm 2:1, Raynox 250 and a couple extension tubes. My rail is a 40 dollar (USD) manual rail with a Cygnustech Diffuser for my Godox flash. Not to mention a 15 year old, old tripod that needs replacing. Nothing fancy at all! As I said, this is all new to me. But every time I get this amount of detail in a stacked image I get more addicted to it. I believe the blueberry was around 25 images. I would love to have a more hightech set up for some subjects, such as seeds or something of the like.
I do have a flickr acount, but I need to revamp it as I haven't used it in ages. I have a instagram account at @thebokshot that I'm also trying to revamp. In the coming year or so, I really want to step up my macro game and start studying more subjects like this. It makes me sad that fruit isn't in-season anymore. Most of the things I shoot I don't share because it's just me playing around.
Thanks again! I appreciate your words, kindness and inspiration. Don't stop what you do. It's truly great!

Your pictures are getting better and better and it is a real joy to see it happen in real time. This stuff is not as easy as it sometimes looks and I know how much work it takes to advance. Keep it up and it will only be a matter of time before you are the last one standing. I have no doubt.

It was a tremendous picture, Nils! Rik was effusive in his praise of the image and I couldn’t agree more. A well deserved place.

The winner was great. May I suggest this, instead of panning on such a great photo, which throws all that fine focus out of focus, why not step along the image, with each step being in perfect focus just as it is in the entire photo. Panning in the traditional manner throws the image out focus - stepping down the image as if taking different shots maintains the great focus of the original.

Excellent point. I am very conscious of the short attention spans of many viewers, especially this late in a long video, so I tend to animate more towards the end. But your observation is valid and I will reconsider my workflow along these lines. Thanks for pointing this out!

@@AllanWallsPhotography I find the short-attention-span-thing baffling. I love long videos and tend to find myself engaging more with longer content than the shorter things that seem to just be too rushed.

If you go to Allan's home page on RUclips, the link to his Discord page is located on the lower right corner of the page banner (pic of clouds). I don't think YT allows the posting of links in the comment section.
