Yeah good job you told me these 3 words.
He he boi!
Now we know why U.K’s Apple products are getting more expensive. Abusive consumer rights
I got my 4s screen replaced (design flaw software started going wonky not answering calls ) and quoted this when 4 years old .. replaced screen to new straight away. Felt like new phone. Only works on design flaws so if you drop it or take it to the bath with you you’d not get replacement and would need the Apple care.

In Germany, we actually have two different words for that. „Garantie“ is what the manufacturer can do, but does not need to. „Gewährleistung“ is what the law dictates.

@@drumfynnfun It is 2 years in Germany, but, after 6 months you have to prove that the device error is the manufactorer's fault. Only then you will get a repair or replacement. In most cases you will not be able to do that. Only the first 6 months are safe.

Great Video Daniel. Your helping inform the UK citizens of their right… Yes, Each country has its own local laws.
Here in New Zealand we call it the “Consumer Guarantees Act” or CGA for short.
This conformation really helped me. I was debating whether or not to bring in my MacBook Pro late 2016 for speaker repair, both speakers blew a few months ago and I’ve used external headphones etc for sound; I didn’t bring it in for 2 reasons, 1: it’s an extension of my arm and 2: I’m out of warranty and I can only imagine how much that would cost. Not to mention the butterfly keyboard issue. All of these issues would make you think I’d never buy another but it’s just so good, that’s the allure.
Did you end up using the The Consumer Rights Act 2015?
Good and bad are RELATIVE. 😉
Always been fairly pleased with apple. I had a MacBook Pro 2017 and the Touch Bar had some weird lamination defect, apple replaced without any fuss. also, back in the days of the iPhone 6, apple replaced that outside of warranty too. Good to know about these rights though. I would probably still get AppleCare for more expensive products for the accidental damage cover though.
I was so excited and then he said the part about it being a UK law. Damn.
Maybe your country should join the UK 🇬🇧 then, they do not have many allies recently 😉

I love UK on hearing this consumer rights law, thanks for the info sir...
I thought it was 2 years, not 6, thanks mate
Only in UK though
6 years tho, they is another catch fair usage as I had a TV fail just close to 5years and they offered so much in cash towards a new TV as I had quite a few years of usage out of it and did read about this in the consumer law act
In EU its 2 years
@@juntobeats22 i honestly thought it was an EU directive
In UK we have had consumer rights law for a long time. The video is slightly misleading / confusing. Outside the manufacturer period of 1 or 2 years, you have to prove any faults are due to the manufacturer and you have up to 6 year's from.time of purchase. If you are offered a refund, the seller can deduct a reasonable amount for the time you have used the product. Also in the UK if you pay for something on a credit card costing £100 - 30k the card company is jointly liable to cover you for faulty / unsatisfactory goods and you can take up a claim directly with them.
Those 3 words are:
"I AM POOR" 😭🙏🏻
Lol
Haha
Lol
This may be different in the UK but as far as I know you can’t request a refund unless it’s from the place of purchase so for example, you can’t go to Apple and ask for a refund under Consumer Law if you bought it from third party electronics store. You’d have to go to the store you purchased it from in order to claim a refund. Repairs or replacements are done at Apple if needed though and they may not exclusively mention Consumer Law but they wouldn’t charge you unnecessarily otherwise they could get sued if they breach the Consumer Law Rights, as would any company selling goods.
Have this exact problem with my 2018 MBP. They wound up replacing the keyboard and battery under their replacement fix for the butterfly key issue. But never really made too much of a difference 🤷🏻♂️
That's what I call a great service Daniel. I am pretty sure not enough people knew about it. Unfortunately there's no cover in my country but there might be a lot people would benefit from it in other regions. Cheers!

Another thing that works great in Portugal (probably under the Consumer Law as well) is going to an authorized Apple repair shop and saying (in case there is a defect and they refuse to repair/replace it for free) that you do not trust your Apple product and you feel endangered by its malfunction, works like a charm.
I’m confused? How does that scare them
I didn't know this! I'm in the UK! This is amazing! Thank you so much Daniel!
Consumer rights act 2015, I used this when my iPhone 7 became faulty a few years after purchase.
Didn’t work on my iPads but you did get me a new HomePod when one of mine was bricked by software update. Thanks as they got crazy expensive when discontinued them!
I got my snacks ready! Love it.
A few things missing in this video. The Consumer Rights Act says that consumers must receive products that are
1. Fit for purpose
2. As described, or as seen in a sample
3. Of satisfactory quality
Item 2 also apply to digital goods.
In this case, claiming for Apple products usually comes under "satisfactory quality" and without defect.
Within 30 days, you can ask for a full refund. This is the right to reject.
Beyond that, the seller can offer a repair or replacement before you can ask for a partial refund. This is the final right to reject.
If this final rejection is within 6 months, the seller cannot deduct anything from your refund for use of the product, i.e. you can claim a full refund.
There is no mention of a 6 year cap in the law, but a contract between the consumer and the seller can lay out the limits on claims provided that it is not unfair.

I love it how we talk about consumer rights like it’s a thing that was hidden somewhere in the cave. I’m still glad that you mention it for other people to take advantage of it if Apple doesn’t wanna cooperate

As far as I can find, the US doesn’t seem to have a comparable consumer law. :(
You gotta pull yourself up by your bootstraps!
I had an issue with an iPhone in US several months ago and while Apple kept running remote diagnostics and capturing data at the end they just kept telling me that they did not know what was going on and then gave me a silent treatment. Meanwhile the phone kept burning through mobile data like there was no tomorrow. Phone was under warranty when I reported the issue too. So consumers in US are much more screwed as they are at the good graces of Apple. I had to stop using the phone as I didn't know (and neither did Apple after over months of diagnostics) what was causing mobile data leaks. I felt like I was being suckered by sending gigs of data using cellular while I was still connected to WiFi. Bizarre and inexcusable.
If they did, that’s almost 1/3 billion people. Guaranteed that there would be so much fraud that most companies would go to court and probably beat the customer lol.
Merchantability. That's the key word in the US.
you can blame the republicans for that!
I’ve got two iPad Pro. One 10.5 and one original 12.9 Pro both of which have developed white spot this month! I’m going to use your advice. The 10.5 especially should have been recalled. Just been very unlucky with the white spot on the 12.9.
Thank you, this is so helpful! I wish I've known this when I found out about the defect in my iPhone 6s plus camera (as well as the battery that kept freezing and dying in France in the cold between November to April!!!). They only said the warranty already expired and wanted me to pay for it!!! It was an awful experience with Apple.
My question is:
Do we have to go to the store where we bought the device from?

For the fellow danish audiance, “consumer law” is the english word for “reklamationsret” and is also 2 years.
Not sure if it was mentioned but apple world wide warranty and apple care is covering your product in the whole world as long as there is an Apple store or a Premium reseller / service provider. Where the consumer law can only be used in the country it was purchased, so don’t go buying all your items in UK if you don’t live nearby hoping for a 6 year warranty, unless you wanna travel back to UK for the repair. Apple once replaced the screen on my MacBook for free outside of Warranty under Consumer Law Rights. I was pretty surprised because Apple were the ones that told me about Consumer Law Rights. BUT they claimed that Consumer Law Rights was only valid for 2 years. I'm in UK btw
In UK, it is 2years bro..
In Australia we have a thing in consumer law called statutory warranty. Unfortunately Apple has a tendency to disregard it which has burnt me three times - faulty 17” PowerBook, one of those 15” MacBook Pros with the dodgy Nvidia graphics card and most recently a USB C MacBook with a non-functional Power/USB C port.
Apple has really gone down hill in terms of customer relations since Steve Jobs died.
I actually received the best warrenty money can buy regarding Apple... I DON'T buy their Over rated - Over priced crap! Been dealing with computers since CPM was the operating system!
if the keyboard is connected by usb then the usb a specs calls for 500 mah current limit (that is why some newer macs may complain not enough power despite devices working perfectly on other older macs)
it could be possible that a surface mount tantilum capacitor has shorted or a usb pin has bent and has shorted.
i know about the capacitor shorting because in a louis rossman video an array of tantilum capacitors on the backlight power rail caused the macbook's backlight to not turn on.
after desoldering the capacitors the backlight came on though was unprotected or giving off interference.
Can you use consumer law rights for iPhone battery drop to 78% after three years with no damages at all?
A lot depends on how friendly your Apple Store is. I’ve gotten several free repairs when I shouldn’t just because they were being nice. For instance, my wife dropped a 6-month old iPhone in the toilet, and we told them that. They replaced it anyway even though they had no obligation to do so. I took in an iMac for warranty repair on a bad drive but asked for them to fix my cracked screen. They told me it would be $75 to fix the screen, but when I came to pick it up, they told me they decided to fix it for free. Sometimes you just get lucky.
You must be the luckiest guy in the world 😂 I’ve been charged nearly full price with applecare+ for issues like a small scratch on the back of a phone meanwhile just wanted a front screen fix

But I think this only applies to NEW products with the original owner (and receipt) and will not apply to the UK secondhand shops or secondhand sales (even with the original receipt changing hands). But I also believe that if for example here in the UK we had Maplin a few years back go out of business and in cases like that it then becomes the responsibility of the manufacturer

Only Florida has consumer laws
That's true, except if you have American Express credit card; you usually get a little more warranty on your product (about a year). Though I had a faulty Dell laptop that had logic board issues, and after a replacement AND having to go as far as contacting *Michael Dell* through some foundation he was working at (Dell originally gave me a run around) I got a new laptop... Which shortly after was discontinued... And now that laptop has sleep/wake issues. Do not buy Dell laptops!
@@cameronbosch1213 Several credit cards now offer an additional warranty (my Visa does). Check with your credit card company to see if they do.
@@ArmandGirard I am aware, but after about a year, American Express wouldn't help me, which led to a whole s**tshow, which is still ongoing, as each laptop I get sent as a replacement has something wrong out of the box (sleep issues, electrical logic board issues, etc.)

Here in NZ, the Consumer Guarantees Act states that goods and services must last an acceptable period of time based on price and quality regardless of "warranty". Because of this, many businesses lie about the law to sell extended warranties.
Yep and it’s incredibly anoying even in some cases i have been dismissed even though I am within my rights.
Customer: Consumer Law Rights
Apple: Why do I hear boss music?
Does this include warranty on a battery, eg a battery they replaced in 2018 for my MBP 2015?
Nice it works in Australia as well but it kinda complicated
They still have to respect the law for you to benefit from it lol. In my country, its 2 years as well but as soon as you claim your consumer rights, they will smile, take your item for "repair", wait 30 days (the maximum allowed by law for repairs) and return it to you with obvious water damage, claiming you did it. Happened to my sister with her phone from a major service provider. Now your only option is to take it to court, which costs money/time/mental health and most people just won't bother. So there is that. Better be polite when claiming your rights, because it may backfire in your face even in "normal" countries like the UK. And even then, it may not work out.... People are pigs. Actually, that is offensive to the poor pigs.
These laws need to be tightened even further.

As an ex 🍎 employee. This is true. This is indeed only relevant if you bought your product directly from Apple. Consumer law only applies to the retailer you consumed from. Also, doesn’t count when you damaged your own machine ofc. We would actually inform customers of this right upon purchase but people basically forget 80% of the conversation lol.
Basically no other retailer than the 🍎 store complied tho, resulting in a lot of people disappointed anyway. So buying directly at Apple might be a good idea anyways.
Hey I'm currently trying to get mine replaced hopefully. When I approach the Store what do I have to say in order for them to get me a replacement of a refund? Since you worked at apple, id appreciate if you could help me out :)
@@Itsme-if1en if you've encountered an issue that is not your own fault, and the item needs to be replaced but is "out of warranty" you can say: "based on the non-conformity clause under European consumer law I think a product of this price should at least last X amount of years and therefore it doesn't conform to the expectations I may realistically hold from a product in this price range." - chances are the employee would go to their supervisor, asking for an "overwrite" so that they are allowed to service or replace your product outside of the standard warranty period. This applies ONLY when you bought it directly at Apple!! Good luck :)
Very helpful if you in the uk well before I spent 10 minutes you could have said that it’s only for uk in the beginning of this video so I wasn’t sitting there waiting
Does it work also if someone's else bought it and gave it to you as present?
I already knew this, even when speaking to apple support they didn't appear to be aware of my countries consumer laws - Britain. So had to be passed onto senior management. But it was a broken ipad after having it 7 months, and as soon as they accepted the law my replacement arrived within 24 hours of shipping it. I hope American's have similar protections, as I know EU countries have excellent consumer laws.

Apple might follow the law but won't train its staff to know what consumers are entitled to and enforce those standards. Apple is not alone in this but it is clear that brands rather sell you a repair or new product then do what's right.
Be a Karen and call consumer service. Sometimes being a Karen is OK. Consumer service will call the Store and have them comply. That's what I did.

This happen to me with a 2 yr old MacBook Pro with a sudden screen failure. Out of warranty yes but here in New Zealand the consumer rights dictates “an expected amount of time a product will last” and 2 yrs of life is far to short. Apple replaced the screen free of charge and the inspection fee.
