I had a (brown) Gen 1 Zune back in high school and the first couple of years of college, and, despite the hardware issues, the subscription model was actually a game changer. At the time, being able to download unlimited music and put it on a mobile device felt like a cheat code, and I legitimately don’t think I’ve ever been more into music than I was during that period. In a pre music streaming world, it was legitimately incredible to be able to explore new bands with no restrictions. It was such a great feature that, even though I switched back to the Apple ecosystem in like 2008 when I moved over to iPhone, I still ended up buying a separate Gen 2 Zune to listen to music on. For all of its faults, if Microsoft had found a way to better capitalize on and evolve that particular business model, who knows? Maybe we would all have Zune subscriptions instead of Spotify today.
Looking at what Microsoft, knew was on the horizon with a psudo-social media app like spoify (i.e. wrapped, sharing playlists, etc.) they were away ahead of the times.. too bad people didn't see it.
Remember on iTunes you could rip a cd and get the songs on ur iPod, could zune do that? Also I remember there was a way to just download music from the internet and format it into iTunes then get it on ur iPod, did the Zune have any other way to put music on it other than buying it?
Good point there. For as much as pop culture worships 80s cassette tapes. Downloading music on a mobile device and charging that battery at night time is so much more practical than carrying around several cassette tapes and constantly rewinding them.

They didn't spend enough time testing and polishing out the bugs before releasing to the general public.

I had that second gen until 2022. It was Black and in pristine condition. I sold it on eBay for $250. Selling a 14 year old "failed" product for $250 isn't too bad...

Really wish they would bring it back with a refreshed windows mobile UI that runs natively on ARM and runs android apps natively and comes with a 128gb or 256gb ssd and relaunch the Zune Music Player app on Windows, Android, Chrome, MacOS and iOS
I have the iPod killer - the Sandisk Sansa Clip! It played OGG, APE and FLAC and all the rest. It had great sound and the battery lasted quite a long time. Most importantly: I still have it and it's still work and it's still compatible with all and any USB port available.
The Sansa Clip family (but not all models) was beloved by audiophiles and is still valued today. For a fraction of the price of an iPod, it had better sound quality and greater amplification potential.
The zune was so much better than the iPod. It had a oled screen and music subscriptions before they were common. The issue was Msoft cancels everything if it’s not successful in the first 12 months. The iPod took years to become mainstream. Microsoft never understood that

It actually had a radio tuner and I LOVED the feature where it would search for music and add it to your zune. Finally, it had WIFI SYNC before iPod ever had it! Not to mention it had an OLED screen, something people griped about iPods not having. Much like how today, we gripe about iPhones not having 120 hz screens as a standard.
Yeah, and not even just wireless syncing but after an update you could download music on it using wi-fi too, no computer needed. You did have to have Zune Pass or points in your account, but that much should be obvious. It was just so much better than iPod, but sadly the Apple culture won

Zune HD was cool in theory, and I loved playing Audiosurf with music on my Zune using the gyroscope - but it infuriated me that there were no pressable buttons on the thing besides the power and home button, so if you wanted to do something like change the volume or quickly mute a song (e.g. when someone tries to talk to you with your headphones in) you have to wake up the touch screen and tap it. Dumb... pretty sure the iPod Touch always had a physical volume rocker. If Zune HD had that it would have been great. I kept using my 80GB Zune even after getting the HD
I bought my first zune 2 years ago and i love it. I ended up buying the first gen, 2nd gen and zune hd so I could experience each. Its not a perfect device, but i enjoy its quirks and the interface is great. Its nice to go for walks with nothing but my zune. No notifications to distract me.

As someone who used a zune I can say it was a fantastic MP3 player. Not only that but it had really good games. As a thing to listen to stuff on it was one of the best I ever had until the iPhone took over.
I remember a college classmate brought a brown Zune to our weekly computer lab session. He put it back in his backpack after realizing that no one in the class was interested in it.

My incentive was that I really hated Apple and thought the iPod interface was moronic (I still do), and the Zune was just a much more logical approach to a mass storage based mp3 player. Yes there were other players on the market, and I had several Sandisk Sansas and Creative MuVos or whatever, but those were cheap flash-based ones with tiny displays. Zune was amazing for watching movies on... yeah the resolution was the same as the iPod but you didn't have to squint. I put entire seasons of Family Guy on there and would watch it in school

Never had any of the issues listed in this video. The Zune was great. Ahead of its time in many ways. I got rid of mine a couple years ago and hadn't used for a long time. I was amazed at how well it aged. The interface is fantastic.
Apple is by no means perfect, but good development and management of an ecosystem matters. I mean, 'Squirting?" That it made it out of whatever meeting room it was dreamed up in is beyond me.
I feel like this is pretty eye opening to the iphone user's mindset in the iphone vs android debate. A lot of them will argue that apple is "just better" regardless of any argument to the contrary. Seeing this, however, makes me think that that argument started back when the ipod was legitimately just better; being more functional, user friendly, and less weird than it's largest mainstream competition. Then that sentiment naturally carried over to the first iphone, bringing us today.
The zune could have been a hit but much like Windows phone Microsoft just doesn’t know how to market their products that are not Windows. In July 2009, I bought a refurb 2nd Gen Zune 80Gb. I bought it just to see how good or bad it was. It seemed decent, but I was already in the Apple universe and so I didn't use it much. After a couple of years I pulled it out of storage to find that the battery had swelled up and split the case apart. I really liked the Zune branding. It had a lot of potential to grow, but MSFT could only skate to where the puck was, and not to where it was going to be.
I wish I still had my zune. I had an iPod first but the interface was so much better on the zune. The click wheel was infuriating for me and I enjoyed the customization the zune offered. It certainly wasn’t perfect and the iPhone killed it. But at the time you would have to pay me to trade in my Zune for an iPod.

Before that first friend could figure out how to transfer a single song without wiping his entire iPod, we'd transfered our respective Zune collections while still retaining all our data. Back then when the Zune and the iPod were out, I went with the iriver. The iriver was such a cool device, it had a little haptic scroll pad, rechargeable battery, I can't remember how many songs it held though.
I had a friend who had the Zune and since we were in the same band we would add songs to our iPods to go home and learn to play at shows. I asked him why he had a ZUNE instead of the iPod because he always had to bring his laptop just to add music to the Zune (might as well just use the laptop). He said "I didn't buy it...I won it at a giveaway, there is no way I would buy this hunk of junk! The words Hunk of Junk inspired an original song by the same name about a guy who buys all the latest electronics and discards them in a pile once they fall out of fashion!
If we're talking like-for-like generation, you needed a computer to transfer files to iPod just the same. And, the Zune software was far more useful, supported more file types, including mp4, and didn't have insane built-in copyright protections. The Zune could actually share songs wirelessly, albeit limited to 3 replays.
I won a Zune in some sort of online contest (2nd generation '80' model). I tried to get it to work, but I wasn't able to get a single song on it. I already had an iPod Nano, so i wasn't too motivated to get the Zune working.

Man I remember that! And how sleep it looked on that nice OLED screen! People complained about how easy it was to scratch and break the glass screens on iPods but the Zunes were built so much better!

As someone who used a zune I can say it was a fantastic MP3 player. Not only that but it had really good games. As a thing to listen to stuff on it was one of the best I ever had until the iPhone took over.
It had one of the best mobile DACs in existence at the time.

The Zune was released way too late and didn’t bring anything game-changing. For a consumer, there was no incentive to buy a Zune instead of an iPod.
There were also other mp3 players on the market. Those who could afford one had already bought something by the time the Zune came out.

My incentive was that I really hated Apple and thought the iPod interface was moronic (I still do), and the Zune was just a much more logical approach to a mass storage based mp3 player.
Yes there were other players on the market, and I had several Sandisk Sansas and Creative MuVos or whatever, but those were cheap flash-based ones with tiny displays. Zune was amazing for watching movies on... yeah the resolution was the same as the iPod but you didn't have to squint. I put entire seasons of Family Guy on there and would watch it in school
@@baronvonslambert You could have bought a high quality MP3 player from any of the 20 other companies that were not Microsoft selling them. Zune literally came out years after Creative, SanDisk, Toshiba, HP, etc. all released high-quality music players with color screens.

Never had any of the issues listed in this video. The Zune was great. Ahead of its time in many ways. I got rid of mine a couple years ago and hadn't used for a long time. I was amazed at how well it aged. The interface is fantastic.

Apple is by no means perfect, but good development and management of an ecosystem matters. I mean, 'Squirting?" That it made it out of whatever meeting room it was dreamed up in is beyond me.
I feel like this is pretty eye opening to the iphone user's mindset in the iphone vs android debate. A lot of them will argue that apple is "just better" regardless of any argument to the contrary. Seeing this, however, makes me think that that argument started back when the ipod was legitimately just better; being more functional, user friendly, and less weird than it's largest mainstream competition. Then that sentiment naturally carried over to the first iphone, bringing us today.

The zune could have been a hit but much like Windows phone Microsoft just doesn’t know how to market their products that are not Windows. Not to mention the iPod had already been out and had five generations by the time the zune came out.

No, Microsoft's products will most likely fail. They never know what people want and make terrible products. It's not about marketing or timing. It's basically that their products sucks.
In July 2009, I bought a refurb 2nd Gen Zune 80Gb. I bought it just to see how good or bad it was. It seemed decent, but I was already in the Apple universe and so I didn't use it much. After a couple of years I pulled it out of storage to find that the battery had swelled up and split the case apart. I really liked the Zune branding. It had a lot of potential to grow, but MSFT could only skate to where the puck was, and not to where it was going to be.
I wish I still had my zune. I had an iPod first but the interface was so much better on the zune. The click wheel was infuriating for me and I enjoyed the customization the zune offered.
It certainly wasn’t perfect and the iPhone killed it. But at the time you would have to pay me to trade in my Zune for an iPod.

I remember one of my friends asking if I could put a particular song on his iPod. Another friend and myself brought over our Zunes to swap music. Before that first friend could figure out how to transfer a single song without wiping his entire iPod, we'd transfered our respective Zune collections while still retaining all our data. Then, we just laughed at how much of a pain iTunes was.

I bought a Zune when it originally came out and I liked it very much, once the iPhone 3G came out I just wanted one device so I switched. After the iPhone 4 I didn’t have a cell phone for years but when I came back I got into Windows Mobile until it was discontinued and went back to iPhone.

I had a Zune (mine was red) and I looooooved it! The software was better, the device was better, and I thought it would be successful. If it hadn’t been stolen I’d still have it.

I had a Zune for so long. it lasted longer then any of my iPods. My dad only got rid of his because the software stopped working like... 5 years ago also it was so much easier to. livewire music on a Zune then it was to do it on apple LOL

I used to have a Zune. I got one in 2011, as my birthday present, but it fell into disuse the following year when I got an IPad, and it ultimately bit the dust 2 years after that when the battery swelled while charging.
EXCELLENT DEVICE JUST WAITED TO LONG TO RELEASE IT FOR IT TO BE A MAINSTEAM SUCCESS. loved the design of all the models and player ui fyi never paid for albums so never had an issue there. limewire,frostwire we're king.

Back then when the Zune and the iPod were out, I went with the iriver. The iriver was such a cool device, it had a little haptic scroll pad, rechargeable battery, I can't remember how many songs it held though.

I thought about buying a Zune because it had way more storage than an iPod. You didn't even mention that fact.
In the end I bought neither.
I had a friend who had the Zune and since we were in the same band we would add songs to our iPods to go home and learn to play at shows. I asked him why he had a ZUNE instead of the iPod because he always had to bring his laptop just to add music to the Zune (might as well just use the laptop). He said "I didn't buy it...I won it at a giveaway, there is no way I would buy this hunk of junk! The words Hunk of Junk inspired an original song by the same name about a guy who buys all the latest electronics and discards them in a pile once they fall out of fashion!

You did not need a computer to add songs to a zune especially in the later models.
If we're talking like-for-like generation, you needed a computer to transfer files to iPod just the same. And, the Zune software was far more useful, supported more file types, including mp4, and didn't have insane built-in copyright protections.
The Zune could actually share songs wirelessly, albeit limited to 3 replays.
Interesting that Apple never tried the social angle until Ping many years later...
Microsoft just got lucky and had monopoly in PC, nothing they have done was ever that great.

I won a Zune in some sort of online contest (2nd generation '80' model). I tried to get it to work, but I wasn't able to get a single song on it. I already had an iPod Nano, so i wasn't too motivated to get the Zune working.
I had the Zen. And loved it.
