I had a (brown) Gen 1 Zune back in high school and the first couple of years of college, and, despite the hardware issues, the subscription model was actually a game changer. At the time, being able to download unlimited music and put it on a mobile device felt like a cheat code, and I legitimately don’t think I’ve ever been more into music than I was during that period. In a pre music streaming world, it was legitimately incredible to be able to explore new bands with no restrictions. It was such a great feature that, even though I switched back to the Apple ecosystem in like 2008 when I moved over to iPhone, I still ended up buying a separate Gen 2 Zune to listen to music on. For all of its faults, if Microsoft had found a way to better capitalize on and evolve that particular business model, who knows? Maybe we would all have Zune subscriptions instead of Spotify today.

Apple is by no means perfect, but good development and management of an ecosystem matters. I mean, 'Squirting?" That it made it out of whatever meeting room it was dreamed up in is beyond me.
The first Zune was amazing. The sharing feature was so awesome. My best friend had one too so we would share song between class. It was so cool. I had one that lasted the typical 2 years and then got the new 80 gig one (probably 2008) and it was terrible. Froze and the battery life was bad from new and got unusable quickly
SO MANY TECH PRODUCTS FAIL BECAUSE THE MAKERS DON'T FIND OUT WHAT USERS WANT. JOBS UNDERSTOOD WHAT PEOPLE WANTED. IPOD IS STILL MY FAVOURITE APPLE INVENTION. AND THEY DON'T EVEN MAKE IT NOW. I BOUGHT FOUR DIFFERENT IPODS OVER TIME. SORRY FOR ALL CAPS. EYESIGHT ISSUES.
My GF at the time had a Zune and we both liked it but it was F'd up, as mentioned, by MS. I do have to disagree that the Ipod was a comparatively "easy" experience. Same GF got me a nano with the screen, super cool looking, went to put MY burned CD's on it...Apple said "Nope" and though I was gonna buy them AGAIN. Told her sorry and asked for receipt, went to Best Buy, got me a Sansa Clip and NEVER looked at Apple again.
Wild. Even after the controversy from your last video in working with Füm, you come right back and do it again. Looks like you don't care about your fans or your viewers, which is a shame.
Back in 2006 I received a zune for birthday, compared to my 20gb iPod 4g it seemed like it could be a serious competitor for apple devices, the color screen looked very promising, the translucent black greenish color, radio and WiFi, all the automatic ID metadata additions or the albums, games, and so. It was a great device until the moment I tried to install its software, I’ve tried on 17 different all the ones PCs at home, all the ones at school and my dads office also and I can’t install it neither the incluided cd neither the software downloaded from their web despite it launched a new one practically each week. So my parents returned it to the store and I got a new iPod video, I never had any issue with iTunes, i can still sync all my iPods without any problem, even now that iTunes disappeared on the new macOS it can sync over finder’s music section
This was what I first planned on buying back then when it came to Microsoft's Zune. Thanks to this video, I was wondering what happened to the Zune and now I know. I got the iPod Touch 4th Generation on Christmas Day of 2010 as a gift and glad I got the iPod Touch instead of the Zune. I did not have to connect the iPod Touch to a computer and used WiFi instead. I used the iPod Touch for internet access and listen to music online. This video and the other video explaining the fate of the Microsoft Phone explained why both devices did not live up to the claims Microsoft had made for the Microsoft Phone and Zune devices including the technological problems. The software used for the Zune glad I did not have to deal with what sounded like a huge headache.
I remember seeing a zoom at a Chuck e cheese's slot machine .. I always knew that it was some sort of MP3 player . And I'll always curious about it. But I never got one. And after seeing this video.. I am so glad I never did . I'm getting anxiety and anger just seeing all the problems it had.. But to go through it and experience it myself first hand... I probably would have threw it and destroyed it
Thought i own an iPhone 15 Max Pro I still use Digital Audio Players (DAP) to hear music. The music on DAPs sound better than music on iPhone. I have the Hiby R5ii and the Hiby R6iii. I have the music i purchased throughout the years on them that are not susceptible to recall by the artist or company. I also do stream music because it if of even higher quality than my purchased music. Of course I also have high end earbuds and headphones. I am a novice audio file. Still use my iPhone for music in the car and at home with the high qualtiy ear/headphone. In some way the protable music player has not gone away and is enjoyed by many without the distractions of a smart phone.
The zune could have been a hit but much like Windows phone Microsoft just doesn’t know how to market their products that are not Windows. Not to mention the iPod had already been out and had five generations by the time the zune came out. Also rip to former CNET editor James Kim @ 2:43 who passed away back in 2006.
No, Microsoft's products will most likely fail. They never know what people want and make terrible products. It's not about marketing or timing. It's basically that their products sucks.
The Zune, like a lot of Microsoft's endeavors, was a victim of being a trend follower instead of a trendsetter. Microsoft are always just one step behind and can never capture the market the way Apple has. The thing that's ironic is that some could argue that the Zune actually was the superior product when you look at its features and specs, but the iPod's simplicity is what made it king. And Apple's marketing machine is WAY more powerful than Microsoft could ever dream to touch. The Apple brand and iPod had a significant cultural impact on its generation, and that's why people chose Apple even if the Zune was "the better product" on paper.
I feel like this is pretty eye opening to the iphone user's mindset in the iphone vs android debate. A lot of them will argue that apple is "just better" regardless of any argument to the contrary. Seeing this, however, makes me think that that argument started back when the ipod was legitimately just better; being more functional, user friendly, and less weird than it's largest mainstream competition. Then that sentiment naturally carried over to the first iphone, bringing us today.
The Zune software damn near brought my computer to a standstill. It literally took a couple of hours to do what I could do in minutes using anything else. And I’ll never understand why Zune couldn’t just use Windows Media Player. It was made by the same company!
first time i heard of Zune was when Bill Gates sat on stage next to Steve Jobs. i wanted to know Microsoft's take on it, but all the retail stores were out of stock. so i envisioned Zune to ve a marvelous thing. i liked the Zune logo appearing online and i did not know most of the pros and cons described here.
The Zune is and always will be one of my favourite products especially the HD it was way ahead of its time for design both hardware and software but sometimes things just dont catch on, Microsoft should have gone down the Spotify style route and having the Zune app as a music streaming service or something but eh another universe maybe
I never used a Zune and to be honest never had any interest in any MP3 players. I did however use the Zune theme for Windows XP and used it for around a decade. The device itself may have been bad but the theme was the best ever released for XP.
I had a Zune mainly because I was so anti Apple at the time, I still say if the Zune came out in even 2004, it would have been more successful. The biggest negative with the Zune for me was the battery life, it was Lousy compared to the iPod Classic.
I will tell you why it failed, because I bought it. I bought a blackberry because I didn’t think the iPhone would takeoff. I bought a Nintendo 64 because I didn’t think PlayStation would take off and I didn’t buy an iPod because I thought Zun wouldtake takeoff. Manufacturers, if I buy your product, discontinue it because it will fail
I use to be against Apple and wanted a Zune but I was against Apple because of you connect your iPod to a different computer than the original you have to format the iPod to add new songs
I’ve watched you for a few years, just unsubscribed because of the ad… Everyone is starting to sell out and lower their credibility for a few extra dollars
watching this it seems like Microsoft totally missed the mark on what made the iPod such a powerhouse. It wasn't the most technically impressive device because it didn't have to be. Why would you want your mp3 player, something that will be in your pocket 99% of the time to have all these features?

I won a Zune in some sort of online contest (2nd generation '80' model). I tried to get it to work, but I wasn't able to get a single song on it. I already had an iPod Nano, so i wasn't too motivated to get the Zune working.
Stop taling füm ads.
Just so I'm understanding the hate.. Could you explain to me what füm is?
Great content, but highly disagree with the vape ad.
It's not a vape. There is no nicotine or batteries. Also stop crying about it kid. What if it was a vape? You gonna report him over it child? Are you Christian or something? Because that sounds like something a Christian like you would say. "Vaping is a sin". LMAO you make me laugh. Get a life kid
It’s NOT A VAPE! It’s quite literally flavored air…zero nicotine. Sheesh!
Why he sweat so much?
The dog was not itching himself, he was scratching himself. You scatch an itch, you do not itch a scratch.
Man, I forgot about Zune Pass. I think I still have some of those songs saved somewhere.
I remember myself back in the day, playing with the zune games that were later introduced with software updates. It was cool 😎
If I had a nickel for every time Microsoft competed with apple and failed I would’ve 2 nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird it happened twice
The one good thing to come of Zune was the theme for Windows XP. Black and orange is a great color palette.
Maybe it's partially because of it being uncommon, but am I the only one who thinks the brown color looks really good?
As a long time subscriber, if I see another vape ad in the next video, I’m gonna unsubscribe
I spent half a Christmas Day trying to get my daughter’s friend’s Zune set up - total failure
That robotic delivery of “THANKS TO FUM FOR SPONSORING THIS VIDEO” was odd.
I missed that whole zune/iPod phase. Never had one
I probably would have threw it and destroyed it
The fact that they just totally forgot about leap years really needs to be discussed lol
Microsoft sucks. That having been said, I still want a Zune for my collection. Did I mention how badly Microsoft sucks?
Microsoft only knows monopoly they literally doesn't know what fair competition is
No, Microsoft's products will most likely fail. They never know what people want and make terrible products. It's not about marketing or timing. It's basically that their products sucks.
Sheesh, squirting for a whole minute with a bro?
Zune Marketing team: “Zunect, zocial? Nah, I think squirt really has a ring to it”
The Zune, like a lot of Microsoft's endeavors, was a victim of being a trend follower instead of a trendsetter.
Is it told by a bot?
yooo missed the long videos!!
The Zune software damn near brought my computer to a standstill. It literally took a couple of hours to do what I could do in minutes using anything else.
And I’ll never understand why Zune couldn’t just use Windows Media Player. It was made by the same company!
Fum, again???? I downvoted and clicked off when I saw the advert.
so what ? your a nobody nobody cares about you
first time i heard of Zune was when Bill Gates sat on stage next to Steve Jobs. i wanted to know Microsoft's take on it, but all the retail stores were out of stock. so i envisioned Zune to ve a marvelous thing. i liked the Zune logo appearing online and i did not know most of the pros and cons described here.
The Zune is and always will be one of my favourite products especially the HD it was way ahead of its time for design both hardware and software but sometimes things just dont catch on, Microsoft should have gone down the Spotify style route and having the Zune app as a music streaming service or something but eh another universe maybe
RIP James Kim. He was my favorite CNET personality and what happened to him was horrible.
9:54 the verb of scratching an itch is scratching. Itching is why one scratches.
Had zero interest in the Zune.
I remember when Plainrock said "What the hell is this Zune doing here, ugh"
when lol
@@miaisnotmortyickroom tour
I never used a Zune and to be honest never had any interest in any MP3 players. I did however use the Zune theme for Windows XP and used it for around a decade. The device itself may have been bad but the theme was the best ever released for XP.
I had a Zune mainly because I was so anti Apple at the time, I still say if the Zune came out in even 2004, it would have been more successful. The biggest negative with the Zune for me was the battery life, it was Lousy compared to the iPod Classic.
I dislike the sponsor
I will tell you why it failed, because I bought it. I bought a blackberry because I didn’t think the iPhone would takeoff. I bought a Nintendo 64 because I didn’t think PlayStation would take off and I didn’t buy an iPod because I thought Zun wouldtake takeoff.
Manufacturers, if I buy your product, discontinue it because it will fail
Have you ever looked back at your thoughts and seen common threads in your assessments of why those things wouldn’t take off?
Genuine question!
@@iantingen I always thought that I just bet on the wrong horse when it comes to technology
I was first to adopt but syncing music out of the gate was light years behind iTunes
21:05 that fear is obsolete because of the surface line of computers
Oh yeah, I remember why I unsubscribed. Füm.
I use to be against Apple and wanted a Zune but I was against Apple because of you connect your iPod to a different computer than the original you have to format the iPod to add new songs
Rest In Peace Zune🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I’ve watched you for a few years, just unsubscribed because of the ad… Everyone is starting to sell out and lower their credibility for a few extra dollars
Watching on my ZUNE in 2025
🤦🏻♂️
watching this it seems like Microsoft totally missed the mark on what made the iPod such a powerhouse. It wasn't the most technically impressive device because it didn't have to be. Why would you want your mp3 player, something that will be in your pocket 99% of the time to have all these features?
Haven't used mine since losing the cable. Smart phones mostly made it obsolete.
