i love how this video is basically you yelling "holy sHIT" at unmei for 18 minutes because i can tell you as someone who was hyperfixated on harumaki gohan _for years_ that i WAS RIGHT THERE WITH YOU, unmei kinda took over my whole life when it came out. anyway i never expected to find a video like this about his stuff, and your style of delivery n shit is just. very satisfying to listen to. i'm shocked i only just found this video

god this song makes me LOSE MY MIND!!!! also i can't believe how spot-on you were with your analysis - he recently stated that this song is about a nightmare the main character of his newest album had! i guess that just goes to show how good his music is that it can convey such a sense of desperation, darkness, and feeling trapped even to someone who hadn't read the lyrics. harumaki gohan is quite literally my favorite vocaloid producer ever and i'm glad his work is getting the recognition it deserves!! ugh he's so incredible 😩i really enjoyed your video as well!! you did a great job with it!!

wasn't expecting this kinda quality from a 213 sub channel, gg man! I felt the same about Unmei from my first hearing so I had to cover it and for once I'm not tired of a song after learning, recording and mixing it. It really is a masterpiece of a song

I think we had the same experience on opposite sides of the spectrum haha Nilfruits is one of my absolute favorite vocaloid producers, and when Chimera was announced I wasn't sure who Harumaki Gohan was. Unmei felt so different from Niru's usual style, but in a good way, and the end was absolutely shocking to me. Great video!! Thanks for talking about it!!

In harumakigohan's game, genei ap, there is a secret area titled 'Production notes'. There is a document about unmei, which states that it's Mikage's nightmare. That just made me cry :(

Blue Ending Nova is my best favorite album until now- somethin that i would constantly go back just for the sake of it. I fall hard for Sairen wa Kanata Yori and cried over Photon Blue. Photon Blue sounds like a nostalgia to me haha idk what's with Harumaki Gohan that makes me loving his works without thinking twice-- like his other contribution with other singer like EVO+, sou, Wolpis Cater, etc. hhhhhh it's fun that someone willing to talk this out, Harumaki Gohan is one of amazing Vocaloid artists! Also good luck stalking Nirukajitsu! I promise he's also good!

I just listened to this song 3days ago from a cover by IsekaiJoucho (highly reccomended btw) and wow! I instantly become a fan and been listening to this song the past 3days. I've heard of Harumaki Gohan but never really give them a try before and now i know i definetly should. Like many have said it, this song trully gave you that "This is it!" feeling, the final destination of the journey, and the looking back on the memories along the way.
This is the ultimate song for "I was born for this moment" vibe.

i'm really glad you made this video, there's something so remarkable about unmei.
from what i've seen of harumaki gohan's songs, they often have an existential/world doom kind of theme to them but usually presented in a calm and melodic way, and unmei sounded like.. a really disinfected kind of horror? the calm parts feel so technological and clean, then the bursts of dark guitar that gets quickly cut off before it overtakes the whole song, until the calm and clean façade outright bursts and it feels like the singer can no longer fool herself into thinking otherwise about her fate. such a good song, the constant calmness with turmoil just lying underneath the surface was so addicting to listen to
nilfruit's works have an orderly chaos, where flower dishes out bars of lyrics in a very harsh tone that just blends beautifully with the chaotic guitars and bgm of his work, but he also has an excellent use of silence. his music often take a pause from the chaos to make a stronger impact before heading right back into the rush.
i feel like unmei strengthened both of their talents, the lyrics definitely show a mix of harumaki's narrative storytelling and nilfruit's dialogue/vague allusions. also i didn't realize the collaboration was actually part of a larger project- i definitely have to check out the other match ups now, wonderful video and thanks for making it!

I’d recommend looking at the Japanese subtitles on the unmei video- it shows who worked on which part including the guitar solos (the part at the end is both of them playing at the same time, one on the right ear and one on the left ear) and on the lyrics. though it’s in Japanese, it’s easy to tell who’s who

For Unmei, I think it is the rhythmic repetition, especially with tritones everywhere, is supposed to be super powerful. Plus the last few measures in 4/4 is like running straight to the end after switching over from the 3/4 measures is supposed to catch you off guard. Plus a good little glitch at the end.
I thought maybe a bit of music theory discussion might be welcome here from one geek to another, even though it makes me sound like a silly grad student

I really appreciate this little breakdown. I'm not informed enough about music theory to actually hear stuff like that on my own and discuss it, but I have always found it fascinating to hear people that are more in the know show the more "scientific" side of music that I love. Thank you!

i listened to unmei when it came out but the first time i listened it didnt really click with me, it wasn't until a few days ago that i listened to it again when i was craving to listen to harumaki gohan's music that this song clicked to me especially after the lyrics came out.
i was familiar with niru kajitsu's music with the likes of kimera/wozwald which was covered by utaites in its hayday (same way i discovered hrmkghn actually, through sou's cover of dreamless dreams) but i always found their lyrics to be too... "rough" and conversational for my liking but paired with the way harumaki gohan's melancholic music comes to play here (the chorus drop reminds me of the way "secret", my favorite of futari no) ends up hammering that sense of melancholy into something deeper. whilst harumaki gohan's previous music and lyrics has that feeling of "expressing those feelings and letting it go" type of cathartis, "fate" combines niru kajitsu's revelling in the feeling of (i didnt know the best way to word this) "despair" and those feelings basically having hold on you until the very last second of the song.
i think you said it best, melty, it felt like this song was expressing the feeling of being trapped and i think that's why the song only resonated with me recently as i've been undergoing the same feeling as what's described in the music. these lyrics in the chorus particular: "It's just like my destiny, since I can't change it then I'll just let them" rings less as the usual way harumaki gohan lets the listener process their feelings and let it go and instead gives off a feeling of "giving up"/"bitter resignment" that drives home the melancholy into something more twisted and indescribable.
anyway, what i'm trying to say is: great work with the video! this is a pretty well edited video (although i'm surprised by the amount of bloopers in it) and it's my first time enjoying getting through a vocalo-p analysis video. watching this made me able to process my recently uprising harumaki gohan brainworms again into words and made me appreciate harumaki's new song better and looking forward to the other song collab in chimera (hopefully animated by studio gohan as well because this MV was beautiful). looking forward to see more work from you, melty!!
(edit: also really nice to see another harumaki gohan fan here, considering i've made basically a small edit for futari no's mv release)

i made a super long theory/analysis of this song and i decided throw it here because...
idk why not lol (also i call the long-haired girl destiny for the sake of time)
credit to this guy in the comments of rachie's melty land nightmare cover for helping me with this theory!!
Mikage has many flaws, but her main flaw that the album is about is her terrible habit of creating alternate versions of herself to show in front of others, which she calls “shadows”. This has gotten so bad that her true self is now a completely separate entity from her, always watching from afar, unable to do anything. But there is one more personality that has become a different entity from Mikage herself. The reckless and adventurous side of her that is always willing to take risks - Destiny. Mikage had neglected Destiny from the very moment she began her shadow obsession, terrified of taking risks. This is revealed in the lyrics, “Having a good-for-nothing son must be difficult, so never making any decisions for them is a way to disown them without saying so, huh,” which are spoken by Mikage. Through never making any decisions for her, she indirectly “disowned” Destiny, who she created. She grew to hate this part of her, shunning it away out of fear of getting herself or others hurt, or just making mistakes in general.
And because she did this, Destiny, too, became her own person.
However, instead of living in the same place as Mikage’s true self - which likely didn’t exist yet at the time, as this was the very beginning of Mikage’s downward spiral - she lived on an Empty Sekai-esque dream planet made from Mikage’s subconscious. (i'm not explaining what dream planets are again btw just go on the wiki. yes there's a harumaki gohan wiki) It was desolate and void of life, as Mikage made no effort to even interact with this side of herself. Destiny, of course, wasn’t very happy. I mean, imagine being stuck HERE for 2-3 years! I wouldn’t be happy either! However, at some point, she learned how to fashion the strange bone-like objects scattered around the planet into various things, such as pinwheels, mugs, and campfires, and this inspired her to begin construction on an aircraft to help her escape.
But remember, this is a dream planet. Meaning that people can go there when they sleep. And that’s where Unmei begins.
One fateful night, Mikage herself was transported to this planet in her sleep. And there, she saw someone who she thought she would never have to think about again - Destiny. She was sitting on her plane, reading a blueprint that she made. As long as she was there, Mikage strangely found herself wanting to do what was right - letting this part of herself become one with her. Yet at the same time, she didn’t want to. She was full of self-loathing, and making steps towards becoming her own person again was terrifying. She hated her true self. Not only that, but the main reason she was doing this was because she didn’t want to understand her own feelings. If she got better, then she would be forced to deal with her emotions. And yet, at least trying to let Destiny back into her personality was the right thing to do. So, reluctantly, she greeted Destiny and offered to help with her escape.
    Destiny was not pleased.
For her entire (admittedly short) life, Mikage had done nothing but neglect Destiny and destroy herself, and all Destiny could do was watch. Even if she tried to come out, Mikage would always stop her. Now she was abandoned on a terrible planet, all alone, and it was all Mikage’s fault. She died because she knew the filth of living too well. Mikage had no right to help her, and no say in the matter of Destiny becoming one with her. She told Mikage that, unfortunately for her, she didn’t belong to anyone’s personality anymore, and therefore Mikage could not make decisions for her.
But Mikage was desperate. So they ended up working together anyway, as much as neither actually wanted to.
Immediately, they fought. Mikage warned Destiny to read the warnings carefully so that she wouldn’t regret it later (ironic, considering what this album is about), but Destiny responded by burning them out of spite. The “safety zone” was crawling with lifeless clones of Mikage, and Destiny would rather be on her awful planet than there. At the same time, however, Destiny noticed how nervous this was making Mikage. There had to be some kind of compromise. So in an attempt to get to know each other better, Destiny had the two of them do a johari window together. Unfortunately, Mikage being Mikage, this didn’t work. Zero progress was being made.
The two hated each other, but the only way to become one was to learn to love each other. And this is the point where the PV goes crazy. This part, the whole blood and guts thing, is Mikage imagining what would happen if she allowed Destiny to do whatever she pleased in her headspace. Pure pain and suffering that would inevitably lead to a horrible death.
Mikage was terrified, but she had to go on. She can’t change destiny, after all.
The two just continued to argue. But eventually, through their forced, yet genuine, care for each other, the inevitable happened - Destiny became one with Mikage. But Mikage had no idea what to do. What would happen now that this reckless side of herself had control over some of her actions? And what kind of emotions would she be forced to deal with? Well, the lyrics seem to imply that Destiny will make Mikage conquer her worst pains - rightfully so. All this lead to Mikage having a panic attack, which jolted her awake.
Now that Mikage and Destiny were one, Destiny was going to make sure that Mikage healed - no matter what it took.
(also about you saying that unmei is like a nightmare - harumaki gohan actually confirmed that it's one of mikage's nightmares in gen'ei ap - empty heart so i thought i'd mention that because you were right on the money!)
