I honestly think the use of Kaai Yuki is the part that ties it all together to complete the mood.
The sniffly-sounding voicebank is very good at portraying a depressed mood that isn't overtly sad. It perfectly captures the stuffed-sinus tremble of someone who can feel just enough to be on the verge of tears, as if their subconscious is telling their body that they're sad, but they're too emotionally numb to actually relieve that tension by crying.
That's how the voice never sounds particularly excited, no matter how intense the song gets.

This was really well put! The stoplight comparison actually really helps put it into perspective in an accessible and easy to understand way--you just kinda *get* it. I have respect for channels that go deep into music theory but I frequently find myself overwhelmed, so when people are able to just find ways to appeal to what just inherently makes sense to me as a listener I'm much more engaged. Another aspect of this song that I love is how it contrasts these moods of melancholy and almost a sense of anxiety with the powerful resolution and catharsis that the choruses bring. That somber, tense, brooding atmosphere just contrasts so nicely with those drops and suits the anguish of the lyrical content.
Also? I'd totally watch a video on that fallout boy album. I have things I like about the album but there's also stuff about it where it's like... there's *something* bugging me here but I don't know what. (But I think a big one is the general lack of cohesiveness and just overall being all over the place)

Found this video while searching on reddit, good stuff.
As someone who likes all of inabakumori's songs, his "red light green light" style really clicks with me (I personally call them fake outs because of listening to songs like NON-USE) because a pause of silence can create a lot more impact. I've composed music before I had heard of inabakumori, but he definitely is one of my main inspirations in music now. With almost all of inabakumori's songs, I sense intensity (the exceptions being his newer songs: ex. Hello Marina and Post Shelter) and a couple (or many) drops of sadness/sorrow (with Hello Marina and Post Shelter, a feeling of hope replaces that).
One thing I love about Lagtrain is that each chorus something new is added. Example is the slight difference in the two parts of the second chorus (4:14): the second part (4:30) of the chorus adds a guitar that plays in the right ear, which the choruses before that didn't have. I often find these small differences through multiple listens of the song, which makes inabakumori's music all the more enjoying to listen to because this adding of new musical layers makes the song complex, but also keeps it simple due to the base still being there.

My favorite part of Lagtrain is the melody to the chorus because it's catchy and because (Opinion part) I think that part where she sings the end of the chorus and it leads back to the instrumental, the melody she sang there made it feel like she missed the train, it sounds something like "Now, I'll just have to watch every train until my ride comes again", it sounds like the chords changed to minor

I first heard Lagtrain two days ago and just stumbled upon this video while watching random meme edits of the song (as one does).
I'm going to pretend that I understood more than 10% of what you said and wholeheartedly agree. In any case, you've earned another subscriber.
Keep up the good work, my dude!

I mean, lag train feels like an actual train. The down moments are stations, then the chorus is the travel.

I kinda love how that feeling, that entire listening experience has been put into words, because frankly, I didn't have them for how this song well and truly hooked myself and so many others. Thanks, tho, I now have "Big Red" followed by "HUMUNGOUS GREEN" as mental concepts, now

I always find these song analysis’ to be so enjoying cause no one does it and when they do, it’s a perfect detail-to-detail and explanation that is so compelling to agree and even more compelling to enjoy the song. That or just someone’s genuine joy with a song, but in this case it’s both!

I think it's worth mentioning that her character disgn breaks expectations because her character disgn is clearly based on the emotionless kuudere archetype and the beginning part of her sleeping adds to that kuudere feel by being cute but not expressive a large part of the kuudere appeal then suddenly when the Instruments come in and song really begins to start she starts moving in way that's very expressive not like a stiff emotionless and robotic manner that you'd expect from her disgn and beginning the beginning with only thing keeping to that emotionless thing is her face but this actually adds to expressiveness in a way by making her movement even more noticeable meanwhile giving this rather unique duality with her disgn and the animation.

i can’t believe i’m two years late to this video, but i am also late to lagtrain as well :( i wish i was earlier to lagtrain so i could have watched this video sooner, because it has changed the way i listen to music
i first listened to lagtrain a few months ago when a cover artist i like sang it, and fell in love, then i watched this video
i never knew how to put it into words but the push/pull analogy sums it up perfectly, the song is such catharsis and now i’ve been able to explain why i like so many of the songs i like
i was listening to devils manner and realize a similar thing is done there as well, and it made me think back to this video
thank you for sharing your thoughts and insight on this 🙇

changing up the flow at the end up of a 4-bar phrase to lead into the next phrase is actually VERY common in music
