Mark Penns opinion on how people feel about Walz is basically the opposite to every other opinion I've seen, and to be honest, I think he is wrong also in my personal oipinion. I believe Walz was a much better option for VP than Shaprio. He also said he reckons calling people "Weird" as a strategy isn't going to make a difference, but it clearly already has. The guy doesn't seem to have his finger on the pulse of the younger generations vote.

Totally agree. Shapiro is very pro-Israel. Anyone on the left whos politically active knows that the mass murder underway in Gaza is a ‘base’ issue in this election. Harris needs to energise the base, not deflate it.
Picking Shapiro meant sowing discord inside the party on the horrific issue of Gaza. She didn’t need that division and she’s clever to avoid it. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Shapiro’s ethnicity.

"One of the legends of Democratic politics" might not quite be enough viewer information. Perhaps also worth mentioning Penn's 6 years spent as CEO of the notorious Burson-Marsteller PR firm, or his consultancy company's work for clients like Texaco, Ford, BP, Merck, and McDonalds. Noteworthy too that he was forced to step down as Hilary Clinton's strategist after it emerged that his work at the same time for the Colombian gov on behalf of Burson-Marsteller was a conflict of interest. Penn was reportedly very divisive within the Clinton campaign team, and by 2018 was a Fox News regular, expressing concern that the Dems were moving too much to the left.

The political pundits who like to think they know everything, who were calling for Josh Shapiro to be VP hate this VP pick with a passion, particularly the right-wing democrats (who like to call themselves”moderates”) and former republicans.
The reality is that Harris has a problem on the left. The left of the Democratic Party don’t like her because of her politics. This interviewer mentioned her performance in the 2020 presidential primaries, where she was obviously courting the left of centre vote. This was because her record is very right wing - she would be very comfortable in the Australian Liberal Party under Peter Dutton. If Harris had gone with the picks that right wing pundits like this interviewer had preferred, she may well have alienated enough voters on the left of the Democratic Party (which is located at the political centre) that Harris may have lost the election with her VP pick.

It's easy to dupe the American public regarding terms of military service. Only 1% of Americans serve on active duty and ~6% of Americans perform any service. I think only about 30% of young adults are qualified for service. Given all that, the specific terms used by service members or defined by the Department of Defense (DoD) is not necessarily what the average person would think.
Combat could mean service in a specific geographic area during a specific period of time as defined by DoD (for tax purposes*), sometime referred to as "In the box" or "down range" by service members of a certain age. It could also mean being in a combat engagement, being fired upon, firing at, hitting an IED, etc., an experience sometimes being awarded a combat service badge. This does not necessarily have to happen in a combat zone (I think), but it would make sense that it usually does.
War service for a service member is any work done under orders (written by the Dept of the Army/Navy/etc. and assigned the service member by name ) specifically stating the wartime operation of support., OEF, OIF, IFOR, SFOR, etc. For a guardsman or reservist, it will mean getting "Active Duty" orders. Those orders could station a person anywhere in the world to do that support mission. It could mean being sent to patrol streets in Bagdad, or it could mean going to Fort Anywhere in America to add personal for a task needing more people, or back filling a station so that the other personnel can go down range.
Rank at separation does not cancel the rank earned or served while on duty. Rank during duty can be the rank on the paycheck or, on occasion, be a "frocked" rank of one paygrade above what's on the paycheck. When a person has attended a rank by promotion but not held it for a specific time period before separation (time in grade - (TIG)), the retirement rank is a rank lower - or at least this is what it sounds like happened to Walz. The military branches will also do this when members transfer among active, reserve, and guard units. This retirement rank does nothing to discredit the fact that he achieved and served at a higher rank.
This is all sophistry and it will work well on an never-served audience who wants to hear it.
Equally, people use lay terms to denigrate J.D.'s combat service, and it is a disservice to J.D. and other veterans. It sounds to me that he was in a combat zone and that, to me, is combat. Whether it was his job to patrol or not, whether he had a combat specific job or not, he was in a combat zone and at higher risk of dying from enemy action. To be sure, he was carrying a loaded weapon and prepared to shot the enemy if engaged. He was at the same risk as a combat arms soldier of being ambushed, under rocket attack, or hitting an IED. Rockets and IEDs kill a lot of deployed personnel, many of them civilians, and I don't think anyone wants to claim that a Department of the Army civilian killed by a rocket did not serve in combat. You don't have to have a mission of movement to contact to be in danger in a combat zone. Saying that J.D. didn't serve in combat is wrong.
On the flip side, Walz served in a combat job, artillery, yet it sounds like he never fired a shot against the enemy, nor ever served with a combat arms unit in the combat zone. Conversely, J.D. had a combat service support job, but it was in a combat zone.
It's a whole lot of word play and to me it means far less than claiming to have grown up in a small town in the Midwest and truly having grown up in a small town in Nebraska vs claiming to have grown up in western Kentucky Appalachia and truly having grown up in the suburbs of western Ohio.
*serving one day of a month in combat zone makes the service member's pay for that month tax-free. As such, it is sought after by service members, and carefully defined by the service branches.
