This is like how Apple’s charging cases worked for iPhones pre-Magsafe: They were designed as extensions to the stock battery to extend battery life beyond the phone’s rated usage time. I had one for my 6S when I had it, and again my XR when I had it. In both cases I was able to get more than two days worth of moderate to heavy usage on average with no heavy hit to the capacity of the battery over time (the packs did still introduce a minor amount of iPhone battery degradation, my 6S being at about 84% battery health and my XR being at about 83% after two-three year of usage out of each).
Exactly. You’re out having a great time, taking photos and such, and you don’t have to (stop) and charge, you just keep going until your (portable) battery pack is depleted - charge both later. It’s a stop gap move, like having an energy bar in your pocket. Also, I’m not gonna try an off-brand charger on my iPhone, only later to learn that it harmed it in some way.
This. Plus, it is by design for it to stop charging when it is exposed to high temperatures to prolong battery health. Software and hardware integration.
The 60% vs 57% battery level after the update is probably just down to the quicker charge : your phone simply used up 3 extra percentage points of battery to stay on during the extra 30 mins it took before the update.
Exactly 👌 Probably the best way to measure efficiency was to just keep the phone in the same condition and report the battery percent when the other one finished. Still impressive though.

Just out of curiosity, if you need to always have the magsafe battery pack to get you through the whole day, what was the purpose of getting the mini? The regular size has considerable longer battery life. Or is it not something you need everyday? I've heard the battery life on the mini is really bad.
@@danielxmiller I use 13 mini and my battery can stay whole day, there is a huge battery improvement between 12 and 13 mini. And if you watch battery test in youtube, you can see that there is only 1 hour screen on time between 13 and 13 mini

If you have an iPhone 13 series I doubt you would ever need a wireless charger unless you are a VERY heavy user and won't be near an outlet all day. Battery life is so good on those phones.
I have one of these for my iPhone 13 mini, mostly for when I travel on business twice a month. It’s perfect for getting me through a full day when I’m flying and I find that I don’t even pull out my iPad unless I’m on a longer flight. I just listen to podcast or watch a downloaded film on my mighty mini (which I ❤️). It’s a really great solution. If I was going camping, I would likely want to rely on a larger battery pack for a day or two. I took my phone with me on a 12 hour escapade to Munich and it was a great benefit to have this battery. I was text and using the phone on the plane sporadically and then used the phone for all day when I got to the office in Munich. I’m very happy with this purchase.
I’ve also noticed the temperature of the pack, especially when using the phone and watching videos, is significantly less than it was at 5W before the update
Is it really? Holy cow; this morning i finally got it to update after basically a week. i usually charged wired but this entire week I charged with magsafe battery since I don’t have a macbook or an ipad. But if it really is much cooler than it was before i’ll have more confidence using it especially now with 7.5watts
Just because the form factors look the same doesn’t mean the purpose of them are the same. Apple intended this to be a battery extender. Not a portable wall outlet.. think of it like one of their battery case. It just extends the life of your internal batter when you need it. Everyone measures the the ability of this product based on how much of you battery capacity it can replenish and how fast it can do it. Instead it should be how many more ours of use did you get out of your phone by using the battery pack than if you didn’t. So if you had 20% battery left when leaving work but we’re heading out with friends if you slap it on would u be able to use your phone a lot more and a lot longer than that 20% would have allowed. This is why it’s so compact so it can stay attached to your phone. Remember the apple battery case used to. Just stick out at the bottom right where the bag safe pack attaches to your phone?
I just found out last night by accident that you can charge your wireless airpod and airpod pro cases using the Magsafe battery extender pack. Just rest the wireless airpods case on the magsafe circle ring of the battery extender pack and POOF! Charge! I would be careful with using the MagSafe battery extender as a desk charger. They have a limited amount of charge cycles just like any other lithium battery powered device.
It should be noted that the battery pack can be used as a full on 15w MagSafe charger if you plug a lightning cable to the battery pack and attach your iPhone to it.
I guess the idea is not how long or fast it’s charging but the fact that it’s a resource when you have no other options? If you’re in a situation where you can’t stop and charge, this is a perfect option, right?
My phone rocks 55W wireless charging. Sure I know there aren't any wireless charging power banks that can do those speeds, but there are normal wireless chargers that do that speed, and It is pretty impressive.
I find myself using the cable less and less… my case has a port cover that will put stress on the connection unless I use something to hold it in place… I like the cover as I work in a dusty environment so it makes the battery pack even more useful so I don’t have to worry about that cover messing up the charging port that is also the only way to physically connect the phone to a Mac
I have 2 of these! I carry one in my bag at all times and swap out with my second one every other day. Haven’t had any issues or need of more power so far, but that’s my usage. So, bottom line I’m happy!
Great review as always but I have a question. With the Anker 622, Could I charge my phone via MagSafe while at the same time charging my watch through the port?
I just purchased an Anker 622 and I can confirm you CAN'T charge through MagSafe if you are also charging via USB C cable. Hope this is helpful to someone
I'd use the battery pack as an extender rather than a power bank. I'd slap it on when the phone is full on a busy day, so it won't die before the day ends, and go out with only the phone during normal days, my phone can easily survive the day on normal use, ending with around 40% to 80% while averaging around 18% if it was used heavily and I have no access to a charger and a wall outlet. Given the fact that the battery pack adds 60% to the phone, that would mean that my phone could easily end the day with 60% or even 70% on a typical game day for me.
Just gotten the Apple MagSafe Battery pack at literally 60 bucks off sales, almost chose Anker 633 at similar price point but Apple one just more portable
I happen to come across the anker charger a couple of weeks ago. I use it at work mainly for the stand but the charging is nice so I know I will have enough at the end of the night. I watch all of my baseball teams games which is 162 each season so since I work at night, I’m typically at work during those times. I needed a stand at the very least and when I came across that anker pack, it gave me both. A charger and a stand. It’s also, slim enough and and simple to take anywhere. The quality of it is really nice as well. I would recommend the anker if anyone is looking for one.
Would be cool to have a desk / car dock that fit the battery pack, so you could leave it as a dock or take the pack with you. Other companies have tried but they didn’t do pass through / bypass charging.
I just got my magsafe today i ordered because my 12 mini won’t last all day i rather get this instead of buying a new iPhone i love the size of the 12 mini i wasn’t looking to charge to 100% just make it last little longer and i like the wireless charging or when at home charge while am using it instead of having a wire hanging i wanted to preserve my battery health with apple integration and software instead of going with third party brands
Anker pack killed my battery it was at 99% health after 2 weeks of using anker the health went down to 77%. Had to get my battery replaced I got the apple one is actually “safe” protects your battery. Anker will keep charging no matter what it will over heat your phone.
Thanks for the connect to a Mac tip, it got it updated pretty quick! I think these work well, i got one from verizon for $74 last year, it makes the mini 12 a more flexible device on the days i'm not home
I find this perfect for use on flights ✈️ I stuck a pop socket on it to use as stand to watch movies I usually end flight with more charge then when I took off and can continue to use the phone normally rest of the day without any risk of running out of power. I bought this when it first came out because this was the only one with integration with the iPhone and turns out that was the right decision over the cheaper Anker. While I really like Anker.
“The update could take up to a WEEK over MagSafe” Me, not having to wait because I use this thing every day anyways: For real tho, this thing makes my iPhone 13 pro max a true weekend warrior, with more than enough battery to take whatever I can throw at it for 2 days straight. And I’m an adhd-ridden, impulsive zoomer. Super impressive. Also, the software integration (as always, with apple) is just outta this world. The animation when putting it on, being able to see its percentage on your screen, just a god tier charger tbh.
From the Apple website: "At your desk and need a charge? Just plug a Lightning cable into the MagSafe Battery Pack for up to 15W of wireless charging. Short on time? With a higher than 20W power adapter, you can charge both the MagSafe Battery Pack and your iPhone even faster." It will probably eventually damage the battery pack, but if you use the pack once a week, I think it will be good.
If you plug in your phone while the battery pack is on it will charge your phone faster and will automatically charge the MagSafe charger when your phone is done charging and vice versa. Every battery loses full battery capacity over time no matter what but no it won’t necessarily damage it
Thank you for sharing how to force the update by plugging it into a MacBook. I was able to update my newly purchased device using the method you mentioned in your video and it worked.
I would have gotten this product if it could charge my 13 Pro Max to full, and if it could have charged at 15W. I miss the Smart Battery case, since it was always integrated in the case, it seamlessly switched between the iPhone battery and the phone, and that it won't ever slide off when I put it in my pocket since it is integrated in the case.
The MagSafe battery charges at 15w when plugged in and switches between the battery back and iPhone battery when plugged into either of the two. Once done charging the iPhone your iPhone charges the mag safe battery pack while still staying full percentage if it’s plugged in
When I upgrade my phone in the fall I'll probably pick one up. I finally picked up the apple battery case for my Xs last fall off ebay for 35 bucks and my phone has practically lived in it since January. Cheaper than replacing the battery in the phone that I know I'll be replacing this year.
Apple MagSafe pack has never, ever heated up, no matter what way I’ve used it. I’ve also never, ever heard anybody’s heating up as well. Ankers gets hot as a fireball after 20 minutes, and ruins the battery.
Add this battery pack to the list of stuff like the Apple TV that apple has lowered the price on. Funny how nobody seems to mention it when the price goes down even though apple typically keeps them the same, but will speak up when they’re raised.
Personally I find it better to have an external battery pack with usb-c and fast charge my phone in 30 minutes which is all I would typicality need at that point and then unplug it and not have anything attached to my phone after that.
Wireless charging is convenient but is inefficient ( wasting energy compared to cable charging ) and worse generates heat which if too hot is not good for battery longevity. Both the Apple Magsafe and the Anker generates heat, more so the Anker. I have both chargers and my experience is with the 13 Mini. Larger phone like the Pro Max probably won't be affected as much as the smaller phone. I therefore use the Magsafe or Anker charger when out all day as a back up.
Please run this test on the 13 Pro Max bc that's what I have. I'm considering getting the MagSafe Battery Pack for my 13 Pro Max or even one of the third-party alternative options like the ones that Anker, Mophie, Belkin, or other companies make
Max, you should check out the OISLE MagSafe Battery. Its literally as thin as Apples MagSafe Battery with 10mm, but instead having 11.13 Wh, it has 16.26 Wh if the specs are to believe. You can also passthrough charge the battery as well as your phone and it has a USB-C port, that not only receives but also outputs power. It's also smaller than Apples MagSafe battery. I don't know how they managed to do that. The only downside is its state of charge indicator that only shows 0-33% - 33-66% - 66-100% Oh and it's around 55€
If I update this battery pack can I get that 7.5w speed on the qi charging for older devices? Or are they still locked to the 5w Qi speed regardless of firmware?
Can you do a review on how fast it'll charge an iPhone on airplane mode? Sometimes I use my cellular apple watch with my phone on airplane mode + the MagSafe charger to get a quicker charge.
well, im using a el cheapo 10.000mA powerbank with USB-C, 2x USB-A and 1x Micro USB Input (but can also be charged via USB-C) and also 10 or 15W wireless charging Its just as versatile or more, it can even charge my 16" MacBook Pro when there is barely load with 20W (as "much" sense it makes to charge a 100Wh battery with an effectively 25Wh Powerbank) What i really miss with this powerbank since i got a new MacBook is probably 20, if not 30-50 Ah with at least 65W USB-C power output, could extend the 14-20 hours battery life of the Notebook up to easily 30-40 hours+
I keep the battery bank plugged in at home, then when I need to charge my phone, just set it down. I can pick it up and use the phone while it stays charging, and then if I need to go while I still need a charge away from the charger, just unplug the battery, and go on my way.
What if you use the Anker on the 13 Mini? Because it looks like the Anker has the width of the regular 13 which would make it very uncomfortable to use on the 13 Mini
That’s why apples has less battery capacity then the competition. They had to make sure the pack fits the mini while the 3rd party ones usually aim to fit the 13 and up not the mini
I wonder if the Mac needs to be unlocked lol I live with someone who has a Mac but they aren't home, I wonder if it's possible to just turn the Mac on and plug it in. I have two MagSafe battery packs, got them for $75 at Best Buy for a while. I use them to keep my 13 Pro at 90% almost constantly. If Anker's battery pack would stop charging at 90%, I'd get it in a heartbeat. I've used my phone about 6 hours every day or so since I got it on launch day it only just recently dropped to 99% battery health. Either it hasn't calibrated and it's a lot worse than it says, or keeping it charged at 90% is working well.
I'm just gonna wait for magsafe battery 2. Other brands have 3x the capacity with slightly bigger size. That means the apple magsafe should be able to have at least twice the capacity with the curreny size.
just bought the anker maggo battery. I like oem parts better but for around €100 the 1400mah isn’t worth it. I only bought the anker battery pack bc my samsung 10.000mah wireless powerbank its usb port is worn out. Anker’s solution costed only €60 and gives me 3x more capacity than Apple’s pack and coming from a 10.000mah powerbank I’m spoiled with easy 4x chariging of my IPhone 13 mini (2x note9 and XS Max)
theyre probably going to release a phone without a charging port because EU wants usb-c and apple will have to pay more to produce im guessing thats apple’s excuse
After 15h of waiting.. still no update.. I’ve tried the usbc cable way and also kept the bat.pack attached..no success. Still old fw :( // but i'm using Catgalina - don't like Monterey at all..
It is because the heat from the battery is due to inefficient charging. The heat is from energy being converted to heat. Direct charging from a cable is much more efficient, so energy is not wasted as heat. It is similar to gas and diesel vehicles. Gas engines are less efficient and waste energy as heat. Diesel engines are more efficient, so generate less heat.
Apple pushes mag safe so much , but the battery can’t even charge using MagSafe, v annoying I have to switch cables every time. Defeats the whole purpose
I'm not watching anymore of your videos, every time I do I end up spending money on things I don't need. Anker MagSafe charger being delivered tomorrow, and I'm not even drunk ordering.
Oh well, you get what you pay for. The Anker charger is rubbish! it took hours to charge using a 60W charger and when using the device it took 30 mins to charge ny iPhone 13 Pro Max from 68% to 73%, and it gets incredibly hot!!!!!

Will it still charge my phone if I’m using it? Or do I have to not use it for it to charge it
I’ve also noticed the temperature of the pack, especially when using the phone and watching videos, is significantly less than it was at 5W before the update
It’s interesting they were able to make that much of an improvement with the exact same hardware.
Thanks
Also can you use this pack with the mag safe clear case?
I guess the idea is not how long or fast it’s charging but the fact that it’s a resource when you have no other options? If you’re in a situation where you can’t stop and charge, this is a perfect option, right?
My phone rocks 55W wireless charging.
Sure I know there aren't any wireless charging power banks that can do those speeds, but there are normal wireless chargers that do that speed, and It is pretty impressive.
huh? what phone is that?

Wow, thank you Apple for finally giving us what we were supposed to have had in the first place.
I haven’t used a cable since 2017

@@malikkelly it’s fine for me. Was insufferable at times with the iPhone X but with all the other plus/max phones after it really has been fine.
I have 2 of these! I carry one in my bag at all times and swap out with my second one every other day. Haven’t had any issues or need of more power so far, but that’s my usage. So, bottom line I’m happy!
Same asf.
2 of which ones? Two Apple packs or two Ankler packs?
Magsafe battery pack is the most misunderstood apple product of all time
one big upside about the apple one is the fact that it has the ability to be updated. that is a major feature that the others do not have
Great review as always but I have a question.
MagSafe battery pack is perfect for me - it's just there as an instant backup if needed and I need to dash out.

Thank you. I already have the Apple MagSafe Battery Pack. I appreciate your info on the improvement and how to update the firmware!

Does it heat up?
@@malamazo2367 I have one and it does heat up a bit; but no so much to where it’s uncomfortable to hold and use your phone.
It heats up a lot
People always ask why I like Apple. Because they are constantly updating everything. They can even update a freaking battery!
Would be cool to have a desk / car dock that fit the battery pack, so you could leave it as a dock or take the pack with you.
Other companies have tried but they didn’t do pass through / bypass charging.
I been told the 5000 benks power bank fits the iPhone 12/13 mini perfectly. Your thoughts.
That’s exactly right. Heat is the worst thing there is for these type of batteries in our phones and is the single biggest contributor to it degrading
Thanks for the connect to a Mac tip, it got it updated pretty quick! I think these work well, i got one from verizon for $74 last year, it makes the mini 12 a more flexible device on the days i'm not home
I find this perfect for use on flights ✈️
I stuck a pop socket on it to use as stand to watch movies
I usually end flight with more charge then when I took off and can continue to use the phone normally rest of the day without any risk of running out of power.
I bought this when it first came out because this was the only one with integration with the iPhone and turns out that was the right decision over the cheaper Anker. While I really like Anker.
“The update could take up to a WEEK over MagSafe”
Me, not having to wait because I use this thing every day anyways:
For real tho, this thing makes my iPhone 13 pro max a true weekend warrior, with more than enough battery to take whatever I can throw at it for 2 days straight. And I’m an adhd-ridden, impulsive zoomer. Super impressive. Also, the software integration (as always, with apple) is just outta this world. The animation when putting it on, being able to see its percentage on your screen, just a god tier charger tbh.
I have the same pack from Anker with the stand and I love it.
I have the Anker and the apple. I use the Apple to stabilize my battery and the Anker to actually charge
Won't keeping the apple battery pack constantly plugged in (when using it as a charger instead of the puck) damage the battery?
No
I'd say yes. Just like my laptop battery which sucks now.
If you keep your phone battery around at least 40-50%, there should be no damage.
From the Apple website: "At your desk and need a charge? Just plug a Lightning cable into the MagSafe Battery Pack for up to 15W of wireless charging. Short on time? With a higher than 20W power adapter, you can charge both the MagSafe Battery Pack and your iPhone even faster."
It will probably eventually damage the battery pack, but if you use the pack once a week, I think it will be good.
I was able to update my newly purchased device using the method you mentioned in your video and it worked.
i personally wouldn't get one but im glad apple made it a little better for everyone i would go with a cheaper one
Once done charging the iPhone your iPhone charges the mag safe battery pack while still staying full percentage if it’s plugged in
The only thing is it might slide off depending how tight your pockets are but the MagSafe battery pack has a pretty good grip tbh.
When I upgrade my phone in the fall I'll probably pick one up. I finally picked up the apple battery case for my Xs last fall off ebay for 35 bucks and my phone has practically lived in it since January. Cheaper than replacing the battery in the phone that I know I'll be replacing this year.
It’s only cheaper by like 30 bucks
Not really worth it
This is interesting, I bought a 15w one recently and it is super fast & not too hot. Not sure why you would buy the Apple one?
Apple MagSafe pack has never, ever heated up, no matter what way I’ve used it. I’ve also never, ever heard anybody’s heating up as well. Ankers gets hot as a fireball after 20 minutes, and ruins the battery.
Add this battery pack to the list of stuff like the Apple TV that apple has lowered the price on. Funny how nobody seems to mention it when the price goes down even though apple typically keeps them the same, but will speak up when they’re raised.
Yup I bought the Apple version because of the latest update. Previously I was not interested.
I bought two of these on the facebook market a couple of months ago for only $50 for both!! Yes! I said both. 😌
Personally I find it better to have an external battery pack with usb-c and fast charge my phone in 30 minutes which is all I would typicality need at that point and then unplug it and not have anything attached to my phone after that.
Any updates on the MagSafe battery
Using the Anker one as a desktop MagSafe charger would be good?
Do you recommend getting refurbished on Groupon for $50 or spend the extra money to get it for $70 at Walmart?
One of the best apple products I have, I don't get all the hate
Really?
Does your Anker 622 heats a lot when you use it? Mine heats a bit, should I be concerned?
Wireless charging is convenient but is inefficient ( wasting energy compared to cable charging ) and worse generates heat which if too hot is not good for battery longevity. Both the Apple Magsafe and the Anker generates heat, more so the Anker. I have both chargers and my experience is with the 13 Mini. Larger phone like the Pro Max probably won't be affected as much as the smaller phone. I therefore use the Magsafe or Anker charger when out all day as a back up.
I just updated my Magsafe battery pack. It took like 2 minutes. But I fully charged the battery pack before I updated it.
Please run this test on the 13 Pro Max bc that's what I have. I'm considering getting the MagSafe Battery Pack for my 13 Pro Max or even one of the third-party alternative options like the ones that Anker, Mophie, Belkin, or other companies make
Anker for sure
Love the thorough details in your video
I had two of these. Very handy when I travel.
The only downside is its state of charge indicator that only shows 0-33% - 33-66% - 66-100%
Oh and it's around 55€
There are reviews saying that quality is not good ( failed after several months of use etc )
It’s 5w though
Here it’s 69€
Didn’t even know you could update firmware, good info.

The most underrated feature of this pack is there’s no button you need to press to “start charging iphone”
you can also check its charge through a widget
That works with 3rd party mag charger as well.. With faster charge and more power..

Will this work through a tech 21 case?
Your review on the Apple power bank is off. It a battery extension. You have to keep it on the entire day to maintain your battery.
Can you plug AirPod Pros into an iPad to force the update?
Honestly none of the "MagSafe" battery packs are worth it. You lose about 40% of the charge, and that's the best case scenario.
Software update for a Battery Pack... Only Apple?
Can you do a review on how fast it'll charge an iPhone on airplane mode? Sometimes I use my cellular apple watch with my phone on airplane mode + the MagSafe charger to get a quicker charge.
I’ve heard the Anker 622 though gets wildly hot for a lot of users, and doesn’t that pose possible greater degrading of the iPhone’s battery?
The Anker Magsafe battery pack made my 13 Mini hot , it is not good for the longevity of the phone battery
Can you charge the battery with a regular qi wireless charger?
mine still doesnt have the update…. the tipps dont work for me.. i got 2 magsafe powerbanks and both havent updated yet
I like mine, I mainly use it on phone heavy days, which can be a few times a month!
well, im using a el cheapo 10.000mA powerbank with USB-C, 2x USB-A and 1x Micro USB Input (but can also be charged via USB-C) and also 10 or 15W wireless charging
Its just as versatile or more, it can even charge my 16" MacBook Pro when there is barely load with 20W (as "much" sense it makes to charge a 100Wh battery with an effectively 25Wh Powerbank)
What i really miss with this powerbank since i got a new MacBook is probably 20, if not 30-50 Ah with at least 65W USB-C power output, could extend the 14-20 hours battery life of the Notebook up to easily 30-40 hours+
I keep the battery bank plugged in at home, then when I need to charge my phone, just set it down. I can pick it up and use the phone while it stays charging, and then if I need to go while I still need a charge away from the charger, just unplug the battery, and go on my way.
You don’t get updates with the other non-Apple devices… I’ll stick with the Apple Magsafe one…
Do we know for a fact it does pass through charging and doesn’t just charge the pack and have the pack charge the phone normally?

Great video. I wish RUclips could do something about the scam bots though.
What if you use the Anker on the 13 Mini? Because it looks like the Anker has the width of the regular 13 which would make it very uncomfortable to use on the 13 Mini
Dm👆
I have a 13 Pro Max. The need for an auxiliary battery is completely gone now.
I'm just gonna wait for magsafe battery 2. Other brands have 3x the capacity with slightly bigger size. That means the apple magsafe should be able to have at least twice the capacity with the curreny size.
Mine doesn’t update. I’ve left it connected to a Mac and an iPad for hours and connected to the iPhone for days. Still on version 2.0.whatever…
just bought the anker maggo battery.

Great review. Anker will always be a better choice!
Apple pushes mag safe so much , but the battery can’t even charge using MagSafe, v annoying I have to switch cables every time. Defeats the whole purpose
