As a Native, Cheyenne, this is one of the very few movies that give a reasonably accurate accounting of Native Americans and the Cheyenne. We were not Beggers or thieves, we are proud people, strong and self-sufficient. We were willing to share the land because we are stewards of the land but, when they kept pushing us, we fought back. Our defeat was inevitable due to superior weaponry. But she was wrong about two things about the Cheyenne, we DID have a written language as well as spoken it was just pictographic and the academics failed to understand it and their bias prevent them from acknowledging it and we are still here despite their best efforts to exterminate us. I don't live on the rez, live on 1200 acres I own and have bought piece by piece. It's just a pity they can't make more movies this one.
From the UK. I've always admired the courage and tenacity of the indigenous peoples of America and Canada. I have always felt ashamed of the way in which they were treated by the whire man - mostly through ignorance, lack of wanting to understand, and of course greed. The same people treated the blacks and the Chinese just as badly. Personally, I have no respect for Americans, and for many reasons, not the least because of what they've done in their history. I salute you Mr Willis - and your people.
@@reggriffiths5769 Might I suggest a undiased look at England history. Y'all treated your own people like garbage, the Irish, Welsh, Scots and in turn people around the world, colonizing and exploiting all you met. No one is blameless in that regard. The human capacity for cruelty and misuse knows no bounds.
I'm part native and feel that natives lost some of their pride and indepdence by depending upon the govermnet, which we know NEVER fulfills its promises. Many natives use the government handouts as an excuse to not do anything and do nothing with their life. Sad.
@@reggriffiths5769 It's very small minded of you for having no respect for any Americans. Of course your history over there is faultless right? Your people never did any wrong to other groups of people huh? It's really no surprise you feel that way because that's the way I see all people from UK. Always thinking your better than anyone else and do no wrong. No respect for the people of UK from America.
This was my now deceased Wife and my now deceased Grand Daughters favorite movies. Mine too. We're wasting sunlight. Let's go.. God Bless America, God Save The Republic.
This movie " The last of the Dogmen" and "Dances with Wolves" are my most fsvourite best movies of all time. They both give me goosebumps every time i watch them.
Berenger and Hershey's finest roles, performances. Excellent . . . I am one-quarter Seminole, but all I know is that. My real mother was 1/2, but I haven't seen her since I was 7.
I walked out of the theater from this film into a dreamworld for three days floating in its beauty. Just the possibility that they could still be somewhere...
The events; the music; the location; the actors ,; everything is so dam good!!!! it's so compelling to watch from the beginning to its fullness . I envy these indigenous Indians; wish I was one of them even in the hardest of times This movie changed the way I looked at the world as this changed and evolved . They did not take it all. Who said all natives had "a beautiful culture"? You need to crack a few books and find out that many of the native cultures were extremely violent, had slaves, and thought little of killing all males of the peoples they conquered. As a Cherokee, I think you need to disembark from the romantic notion bandwagon and walk in truth. It's a mixed bag, complicated, and ever evolving. By that I mean, that it is NOT an easy subject. And not one that can be learned overnight.
Well as a white, female of 61 years. I and my children feel the hate, from natives towards my children ,who are blond haired ,blue eyed blood native. who were never tought the truth of their culture.Because it has been hid from them. They are Mohawk blood. Their grandmother at the age of 5 had the native beat out of her and brain washed her into think she was white. She was taken away from her family. She lost her native culture as well as her family, completely. Now my children are left to learn their ancestry on their own,and most of it isn't true,as most all of you already know and rejected by the likes of " True Natives"...@@MARYREED-nh7gb
It used to be on RUclips I think on this channel, it's been replaced here recently. This is my favorite movie and I've watched it a few times a year on RUclips prolly the last 8 or 10 years now
@arnoldosura I still try to find it from time to time, still no luck. I bought the film from Google TV/Play hoping that was it... nope. Disappointing. If I find it, I'll post a link. Please do the same if you run across it.
My second time seeing this movie. It's a darn good movie. It's got pretty much everything I enjoy, horses, mountains, Indians, dogs, courage, understanding, friendship. love.
I had this movie years ago on VHS that movie was longer and had Wilford Brimley narrating it which was cut out of this one. I need to find this on DVD still A great movie.
Actually, no. Read Empire of the Summer Moon. The plains Indians took turns raiding each others villages, killing, stealing horses, making slaves of their prisoners. Virtually no white man settled west of the Mississippi river until the colt revolver was invented. A Comanche warrior on horseback could fire 12 arrows with accuracy in the time that it took to reload a single shot musket. One of the most misunderstood aspects of American history was considering the tribes to be living a sweet, passive existence. Nothing could be further from the truth.
I laugh every time when yellowwolf shows them where they are goin to stay and lewis stops and they stare eachother down because they are both hard headed 🤣
Loved the opening scene. Ridley Scott must have liked it also. He liked it so much that he used a bit of cgi and used it as the opening scene for his movie Prometheus including the music.
They must have removed scenes in this version. There are gaps from one scene to another. Then they call the complete version the 'extended version' when sold as a dvd. The story always makes better sense when left whole.
That bridge when Gates flees the pharmacy from abt 1h20 min is deffie the RAMBO 1 bridge. bridge...also this is deffie the BEST MOVIE ever made by Tom Berenger by far..!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Don't know about Rambo, but I am pretty sure it is the old coal mining bridge that is now part of pedestrian pathway along Bow River in Canmore, Alberta. Drug store even has a few signs that say Canmore Drugs and the police radio dispatch mentions Canmore Drugs. I also recognized buildings in Canmore and the very recognizable mountain peaks in the background. That same bridge was also seen in The lat of Us.

Better than Romeo and Juliet. Best "western" I ever saw in my life. Retired age 75 near Detroit. Thanks for putting it up.
The chase scene after he leaves the chemist resembles the town that Rambo was assaulted in.

The Native Americans had a beautiful culture. This country was big enough for both cultures, Its a shame our ancestors insisted on taking it all.

Find the original version with Wilfred Brimley narration... The film loses something without his voice.
