- Actor Joe Flanigan got one piece of advice from SG-1 star Richard Dean Anderson ("Jack O'Neill") when he won the role of Major John Sheppard on the new spin-off series, STARGATE ATLANTIS -- and it changed everything.
Joe joins us for a long sit-down from his hotel quarantine (where he is getting reading to film SEE with Jason Momoa), and he's answering fan questions! Here he also talks about his SGA co-stars, giving David Hewlett ("Rodney McKay") a hard time, special effects on television, and what kind of smarts Sheppard has.

Good idea. Seems like it would have to come to light to the public at some point. It seems as though it would have to happen sooner or later. You get great storylines out of the cultural, economic and political impacts.

Whenever Stargate gets the go ahead for a new series, just make sure Joe is the leader.
On the show, said McKay thinks he's the smartest guy in the galaxy, and he may be RIGHT.
He'll be in there, right along with all the other original characters, or the franchise dies just like Star Wars.
Move him into command and make him hate it just as much as O'Neill. "I'm The Man. I can't be The Man." Seriously, watching ol' Jack struggle with the decision between russet and Yukon Gold potatoes...you could see his inner dialogue: "Please, kill me now." I can see Shepard doing the same thing.

Ages ago Flanigan had funding to make more SGA but the owners of intellectual property said nyet. BSG reboot was great, but I'm not pleased that it permanently altered virtually all of SF (not written by someone named MacFarlane).
It makes RDA's character even better knowing that his aversion to tech was just as much a quality of work-life decision as much as it was a character trait. That's exactly the sort of thing that I would expect Jack O'Neill to do too.

@@ruststar i love atlantis too. This fandom brought me to writing a fanfiction that has so many words ,^0^, about 30k now i guess. I love the chars. And if someone says they have no personality they didnt pay enough attention. The chars are so deep that most of it is outside canon and you have to think to see it all

I agree We Need John Sheppard back & Rodney ..their characters work great together .sheppard always seems as if he is holding back his laugh or Thinking something funny..now after seeing this interview he's happy he didn't get Rodney's lines .
I had forgotten how funny Joe is; not to mention his amazing camera charisma.
This made me want to re-binge Atlantis now.

@@ILPYou They meant Mitchell to be like a young Jack, but he really wasn't. He was okay, but there was no comparison. I always thought John Sheppard was much more like him, though with a reduced science phobia

Joe seems like such a cool, down-to-earth earth guy.
I'm 6 episodes from the end of Atlantis again... I miss that series so much, even more so than SG1. Absolutely loved the bond Sheppard and McKay formed over the run. If there is one show I'd want revived, as much as everyone wants Firefly, I'd choose SGA. And find a way to bring back Lt Ford!
only his sister used to call Rodney *Meredith...lol... its easy to get confused.
Sheperd looks still energetic and in good shape.... I wish that him and MacGyver can bring this to live.

McKay says in an episode: "Who do you think I am, McGyver?" Strangely, nobody in this universe thinks O'Neill looks like him...
Early in SG-1 they talk about McGuyvering up a solution. Camera held on RDA for a few seconds. Loved it.

Truly enjoyed this interview. I was very happy to hear, toward the end of the interview, that Joe paid David a great complement. Joe said that the cast of "Atlantis" agreed that David was their favorite journalist! The cast enjoyed, and still does, being interviewed by David. That is quite the kudo when the folks that provide us with such entertainment realize and enjoy one particular journalist. Having known David for quite a while now, and being privileged to watch him in action a few times, I thought this compliment was more than deserved and long overdue. Yes, David is a fan too, but he passion, sincerity and professionalism continue to allow us to keep Gating. Again well deserved and many thanks to Joe for bringing this to the "Gating" public.
Loved the Stargate Series, especially Stargate Atlantis. Please come back to us. I'm not getting any younger.

when did I know Stargate Atlantis was good? When John Sheppard thew McKay off the second story balcony in "Hide and Seek" LOL I replayed that scene about five times!! :-D and how can we forget the lemon in Sheppard's pocket! :-)

I dunno why they canceled Atlantis, the first season and a bit was a little rough in parts but they had really hit their stride with the episodes. Good interesting funny sifi. I wanted to know more about the ancients 😑
If I remember correctly, by the end of SGA, MGM was already in financial trouble, and they could not do two shows at the same time but had probably already started building sets and did their casting for Stargate Universe
@@LokNarash this is accurate. MGM was in the beginning stages of Bankruptcy. SGU was their last potential hope to balance them out... but people didn't like the dark nature of SGU (even though it was a very nice parallel to SG1 and SGA), which reflected back to MGM as "Well, this won't cut it." and ended going completely bankrupt as SGU S2 was wrapping up.
Joe wanted to buy the series from them to keep it going , they said no .

@@clintonbyers930 Whenever I rewatch the entire thing, I usually stop with SG-1, because the later episodes just don't cut it for me. Atlantis works from start to finish. It can ruin a lot to overstay your welcome.

sg1 et atlantis ont toujours, pour moi, fait parties de ces series qui te donnent l impression de les vivre avec eux au moment ou tu les regarde. qui te font sentir que ce sont des amis que tu rejoint dans la galaxie. et l alchimie que tu sens entre les acteurs/personnages est palpable et communicative.tu est triste avec eux,joyeux avec eux. merci ,merci aux acteurs formidables qui ont su embellir un peu nos vies avec ces series qui nous manquent tant. mon seul regret est de ne pas pouvoir les remercier de vive voix. faites que stargate de disparaisse pas.
It’s fascinating that RDA gave both of them(Rodney and Shepherd) the same advice and one followed it and the one that didn’t paid for it.

Stargate: We don't have the money to blow up a planet.
Also Stargate: Blows up the replicator homeworld full on screen, and then again from the Atlantis database. That's TWICE
And after that, they haven an episode where everyone is stuck in a room and nothing happens.
Or course you'll notice that the entirty of that episode outside the one shot of the asuran city, the one shot of the flying city and the scene of the replicators being destroyed, everything took place in preexisting Atlantis sets with pre existing ancient costumes. We all remember the. Intro of the asurans really well but that introductory episode was like a step above a bottle episode. It was a money saver. Most likely for the following episode that did an extensive amount of on location work for Weir's dream sequence episode.

Stargate Atlantis, one of my fave shows ever, have the box set, what a cast!!!! Loved SG1 as well.
I miss Sheppard (Actor John Flanagan) and his Team Teyla, Rodney n Ronan, and the Wraiths "Todd n Steve" particularly. Stargate Atlantis needed 3 or more Seasons to come full circle for me, even though it did ended. Great Actor✨s and like to see a Re-union "please" of the STARGATE Franchise into a Major Movie film. Soon.
Just imagine, though Atlantis left pegasus, they cast a new show set several years later where Atlantis(After a huge international incident because of the city itself) finally with a fairly full population living there, 3 ZPMs, and with the full support of a now public stargate program brings a fleet of BC-304 class ships to help finally wage a real war against the Wraith :D With Brig. General Shepard now in charge.
His beard says 60 years, the rest says 40 years (idk if his hair is dyed). And he is 53, so that kinda fits.
The temples always go first. Of course it's dyed.
@@jamesh8862 Idk where you get your info from, but my hair on my head is still black as when i was in my teens, but my goatee has about 50-60 hairs of grey in it. And no I don't dye my hair.
I'm 40 and my beard starts turning grey/white like his... I hate it.

When the show ended or got canceled, and was replaced with wrestling, I cut the cord. Every now and then I will watch a episode on line. I really liked SGA, and some episodes were really good. One of my favorites episodes, Duet, sea 2 episode 4.
Atlantis is my favorite, I am in my 18th time of watching the whole series of Atlantis. Joe is fantastic, he and Rodney are great. Actually, I love all them in Atlantis. God bless and keep them safe.
Loved Stargate.. but SA was in many ways, even better.. Every actor and character were excellent.. Rodney ‘of course’ was brilliant..

Near every Scifi show since has their comic relief Smith type character.

Can you imagine a continuation of Stargate Atlantis set years in the future with the original actors? Eh, Jason Momoa won't come since he's a big shot now so probably he won't accept, but the rest....it about makes me want to cry T_T It would be soooooo awesome! SGU had so much potential... but it ended up being bad. 90% soap opera, 5% maybe-something-fun-is-finally-going-to-happen, and 5% what-got-us-to-fall-in-love-with-stargate-series.
I tried to like SGU. Watched all the episodes but aside from the name, it was nothing like the Stargate we've come to know and love. I feel like they tried to be like BSG... but with less action and more blah blah blah.

I got lost there myself for Meredith same confusion as Joe. In fairness it was probably that just one episode her sister called him that and it has never been teased as much after. Rick had the same advise to David on the plane. David and Joe could have never click any better with their great portrayals. Thanks..

Weir stated Rodney destroyed 3/4’s and he corrected her and said it was closer to 5/6’s but that it was not an exact science. Hope there is something in the pipeline for the franchise.
