  • Winter is the perfect time for reflection and planning. Join me for a walk around my property as I share some dreams/plans for the future: expanding our raised-bed garden, keeping egg-laying chickens, raising backyard meat rabbits, and clearing some land to create pasture. Along the way, I'll share some of my favorite homesteading books.
    Books that have guided me:
Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon with Mary G. Enig
The Grow System by Marjory Wildcraft
Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew
The Barefoot Beekeeper by Philip Chandler
Managing the Top Bar Hive by Philip Chandler
The Small-Scale Poultry Flock by Harvey Ussery

I’m excited to be here in the beginning to watch your progress. My husband bought me the “Nourishing Traditions”book for Christmas. I have read some of it and tried a few recipes. Soaking the flour for pancakes made them so delicious.
    Have a great week!

Thanks! You'll hopefully see some good progress over the next few months; I'm ready to get to work. I haven't made soaked-flour pancakes yet (we've been on a waffle kick in my house). I'll have to give that a try.

Thanks for this video. It's really difficult knowing which voices to listen to in regards to eating well, growing food, etc., and it's helpful to be given a list of books to use as a good starting point. Keep up the good work!

Hi Marta. So exciting to plan everything out right? I like the spot you picked for the beds in back. The sun will be higher and there will be more light. The edge wow what to do. Can you put a fence to keep it safe? I’d be afraid I’d forget it’s there and fall. I used to raise meat rabbits years ago when I was in high school. I want to do it again but my hubby is squeamish about eating them! I tell him it tastes just like chicken 😊. We just got permission from the city to have chickens and I would love to but they want us to do an application and it includes getting permission from all the neighbors that border your yard. And I can think of one for sure who will say no 😢. Thanks for the video!

Needing permission from neighbors sounds tricky. I'm guessing they can't be bribed with some farm-fresh eggs? 😆 My area is fairly suburban, but I happen to be on a strip of properties zoned as agricultural land, so there's a lot of freedom in terms of keeping animals/livestock. That's great that you had rabbits in high school! Keeping rabbits will be a new world for me...I'm squeamish about butchering, but my husband promised he'll be responsible for that part.
Yes, I think you're right that we might need a fence next to the drop-off. So far, our kids haven't had any accidents with the edge, but I'm constantly conscious of it.
