Those black & yellow YZs are just awesome. & the classic lettering on the seat is so simple & timeless. I can picture the new line up in the shop during the 80s. & the smell of oils & new plastics!
I purchased a 1982 YZ125 in similar cosmetic condition for $50 blown up back when I was in middle school, so around 2000 time frame. Over a period of time, I rebuilt the engine with a new top end, crankshaft, bearings, etc.....to the best of my ability as a kid, and when my dad would take me to the Yamaha store to get parts or order them off Ebay for me. I was so short, I had to stand on a 5 gallon bucket to even get on the thing. At the time, my mom wasn't too worried as she thought it'd never run, but then was PISSED the first time it fired up. I had that bike for years - cool bike and revolutionary, but just OK. At the time, I hated it because all of my buddies I would ride with had newer bikes (1990's models and newer). Eventually, everything wore out on it again - top end, water pump shaft/seal, etc. I ended up parting it out and scrapping alot of it during my college years. I may still have the frame and swingarm left over somewhere, LOL. Fun fact - with the radiator being mounted above the triple tree, the coolant flows through the steering stem. So, when the seals wear out and the steering stem develops pitting and wear, coolant will leak down into the steering stem bearings. This not only washes out the grease but also causes the bearings to heat up and seize the handlebars forward when the engine reaches temperature. Probably why the radiator(s) were moved in short order to where the are located now :)
With the coolant flowing through frame like that it would heat up the forks and change how the damping worked (not good). Plus w/the radiator in front of the triple clamps and the shock under the seat those bikes were a bit top-heavy too. lol I know, I had and raced an 82 YZ-250! :) Great engines on both the 125 and 250, but the handling wasn't the best. They moved the radiator(s) down onto the frame along w/laying the shock down and connecting it to a new linkage that ran under the swinging arm the next year for both the reasons you mentioned and to improve handling. The 1983 bikes were quite a bit better as a result.
I felt similarly about my 74 Yamaha 80, 82 kdx 80 and 81 RM 125 when I had them in the early to late 80s. My friend had brand new kx 60s every year starting in 85, and my bikes were old an clunke. Now I wish I still had all those bikes to restore and show love. Eventually I ended up with a six year old 86 CR 250 which I' have kept. To my eyes everything after an 85 is a modern bike and desirable.
Had that exact same thing happen to my '81 YZ125. Not being an engineer and still a teenager in high school, even I figured out that was a stupid place to run the coolant! Still thought it looked a lot cooler than when they moved the rad lower on the frame! One question: I always thought the '82 was when they switched the colours to red and white, moved the rad, and changed from a triangular swingarm to that style? Had a buddy who had, what I thought was an '82 in the red and white, but maybe it was an '83?
As someone who knows literally nothing about bikes, when you said, "Nothing about this bike is good" I actually said out loud, "Come on, it's still a beautiful old machine that has been taken care of." I've been watchin your videos for a while now, and if it's actually as bad as you say it is, there's literally no better place for that thing to be. You're a straight up BIKE WIZARD! The things I've seen you turn from trash into living breathing machines is wild. It inspires me to learn more about the craft. This bike, to me, is beautiful and even though it might put you back a bit more money it's so worth it to me, the viewer. I want to see this thing riiiiip out in the field so bad. I've never owned one so I live vicariously through you! Don't be let down about it brother..
Just curious What’s stopping you from getting a bike? Get ya an old street and trial. An xr or something. Best fun to be had on earth is taking for a day motorcycle riding. My worse day riding was still better than my best day working lol.
He must be joking. he keeps buying stuff missing or never inspected over and over. Waiting for the shipping container to store all the crp. He said you live you learn. You never learn
It's a rare bike,I'd go the Hole hog get the frame recoated try to find some plastics sell it for a premium. Collectors are out there and with your skills $$$
I worked at the yamaha Dealership in 82 we had and supported a race team the 125s were Grenades . We would take truck loads of bikes to events 1 bike ,1race ,10,s of spare motors per bike we literally had piles of dead ones behind the shop
Not too bad, still a good deal,, rebuild the crank put a new piston find a good power valve ,fix all little things and it will be worth way more than you put into it, really simple bike to rebuild and worth rebuilding
I owned a 1981. First year for water cooling. The 81's had no power valve and different suspension setup in the rear. My first YZ . Rebuilt motor from crank up back in 1988 when I was 19. Thanks for the throwback.
Joe rebuild it, its a beautiful and rare bike now, bikes like this sell for 2 grand plus here in the uk, and rebuilt and ready to ride models like this go for 3500 plus all day, rebuild it you wont lose, everythings in great condition except engine, give it the joe magic it deserves 👍🏻❤
the market for older 2t in the UK is completely different than here in the States bc you guys have organized racing for these. Older bikes here have no inherent value except for older guys who want the bike they couldn't get when they were kids.
Joe, it surprises me every time you "trust" what a seller tells you in order to get a "good deal". I would think by now, you'd tell the seller, "You do realize I am a popular RUclipsr, and thousands of people will watch this bike get evaluated. Are you certain there isn't anything you want to tell me before we complete this transaction? Because if you are lying to me, all of my subscribers will know it." Also, you know what to look for, yet you continue to get screwed by lying sellers. Take chances on provable facts, not the word of a seller.
Same applies to buying a used car from a skeevy car lot- taking chances typically lands you in trouble. Leaving an honest review of the seller will warn future customers. Dishonesty from sellers is all too common unfortunately
Yep i hear that! 87 YZ 490 here ... Bought mine off the show room floor.. still own it, no its not for sale.. & yes i am to fat & old to ride it now, but i hope my grandkid will try! That thing will make a guy look like Popeye inside 3 months....
I rode a friend's 490 in 88. A couple of years later he and another mate bought a KX500 each brand new, for about $2000 apiece AUD that is. Great motorbikes, but the green machine had the goods imo, I still loved the 490 tho
@don_ogoe1787 I'll never understand why Joe hasn't learned from his mistakes. How many times has he screwed himself by not giving these machines a quick go-over before handing over the cash? Eesh.
@stkyfngrszmooth makes out like he got screwed over but its a 81 yz 125. Probably thrashed to death back in the day an he buys it for 800 thinking that he's going to get it home throw some fuel in it an rip it like its a brand new bike from 1981.🤣
IF I HAD A VIEWERSHIP DROPPING CHANNEL...I would remove parts "before the video reveal" and make wild claims and scary thumbnail title! THEN ALL THE COMMENTS will boost my revenue on youtube!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Such ashame that peoplr lie so bad about what they are selling. YOu are a better man than me. you have such a huge platform to just humilitate these people. Yet you stay incredibly calm... Love the channel.
I have both the 125 and 250 from 1982, both restored. Even though he wasn't honest with you I think you still got a good deal, rebuilding these bikes isn't too expensive and it's a fun project, worth the effort.
That bike is similar to the one Broc Glover used to win the Supercross race at Jack Murphy Stadium in 1982. I was stationed in San Diego & and actually got a chance to go to that race.
@2vintage It was a really good race, indoor stadium. They had a raffle to win a brand new pickup truck for all the ticket holders as well, I didn't win it lol
I really would like you to make a video series on completely restoring a vintage bike like this. I mean top to bottom clean and fix everything with no concern for cost. I love watching the normal repair and sell type videos, but i think a full on project restoration would get you some new viewers.
What's worse is these type of sellers sell to folks that have little knowledge of fixing bikes so their out a ton of money on parts and labor. It just makes the used bike market look horrible when they are so deceptive like this.
With this bike I get the nasty suspicion that someone couldn't get it running, scavenged the parts he needed for a different bike and sold it as "running but with a clutch problem". That combined with the taken apart clutch guaranteed that the next buyer couldn't quickly refit the clutch and test for spark, compression etc.
If one not careful they will get fucked by everyone. Fucked by private sellers lying, fucked by dealerships with fees taxes and interest. Wish dealerships would put the actual price on the vehicle
Thanks Bro,just inherited 2 1982 yz 125-one almost complete, the other one needs tank, body, exhaust carb, and other. The nice thing is you did these videos and this helps me put together the second bike, help is so appreciated, you do great work and explain things well, may buy a manual but well see, nice work.
Easily worth $800 as is. If they're that rare and valuable.... Even if you parted it out. The condition overall is crazy good. Those bikes could throw a lot of people on their back. Even $800 is a steal.
I used to have one of these, but I think it was a year earlier. I bought it from a friend. He had the bike in storage for some years, and when he got it out, he just fired it up and rode it around a bit, sucking the dry rotted air filter element into the engine. I brought it to a Yamaha dealer and had them bore it out, install new piston and ring, and new rod bearings top and bottom. Got the bike back and it ran very strong! It was a blast!! Love the 2 strokes man!!!
I owned this bike in 1982. Raced it from about march of 82 through November. Such great memories. Racing in Illinois at Sparland, Bryon, Harding, Tampico. Any ex motocrossers from Illinois on this thread? I even rode this bike at the Gary Bailey Motocross School at Harding that year. Tons of pics in my collection too...great times!
What you going to do? Get a criminal record out of it? I'm the same, be round there in 10 minutes but in time, i have learnt, there is nothing you can do unless you want an assault charge.
@@GoofieNewfie69 If you like the bike the price is right and you buy at the rate he does sometimes you take chances lets face it he has the knowledge to get it running I think he will recoup his money with a collectors unit such as this one.
Hey, this is a popular channel. And I'm sure it's even more so in the 2Vintage area of Wisconsin. This is sort of putting the seller on blast, in a way. I bet a few people recognize this bike, and who it belonged to.
I suspect that your seller bought this bike from a "buddy." When he realized he was the victim of a practical joke, he decided to cut his losses and pass the joke along! The bike seems to be solid enough to merit a 90% restoration. I'm sure someone would love to have this in excellent condition. Your mad diagnostic skills have earned another subscriber.
I felt sick to my stomach as you went through this bike... Accidently dropping the sellers name right here some where, would make me feel better.. dang man I feel for you, he didnt lie about one thing the repair was over his head.. what a tough learning.....
it's his business model, he does it on purpose. he knows what to check and he knows what he is buying. the whole "seller lied to me" or "seller said it couldnt be fixed" thing is for clicks.
Every time you step down off that truck tailgate to pull a bike down the ramp, I swear I feel my own hamstring snap. Haha! Must be nice having giraffe legs. I need a second ramp to walk beside the bike.
I had this exact bike as a kid. The only brand new bike I've ever owned and only because the local Yamaha shop owener's kid dug my 1979 Honda Odyssey FL 2fiddy that I was racing at the time and the guy offered to trade me for the brand spankin' new '82 YZ 125 he had sittin' in his shop...it took me all of a nanosecond to say...."uhhhh...YES!". I was ready for another bike because although super fun racing the odyssey, it was driving..not riding..and riding is where it's at (that....and I kept snapping rear axles on the FL as there was no rear suspension on 'em back then). Loved that bike, definitely an upgrade over the '78 YZ 125 I had before, which was awesome in it's own right but was basically a light switch...zero low end and then...BAM....hold on to the screaming banshee!! The '82 with the YPVS actually had some low end grunt that came in handy because in addition to local MX, orchard and backwoods riding, I did a couple hare scrambles and actually podiumed in one in the open class on that thing. I think they only had that crazy pro-link rear end for '82. That and the vented front number plate, first year of the safety seat up on the tank, Preston-Petty looking front fender along with the anodized gold rims and shock reservoir really made that year stand out and unique.... and still looks pretty badass to this day. Cool bike and this brought back some memories. Thanks for the vid bro!
mate bought one for $250 bucks.i took for a blast down the road forgetting it zero brakes lol.coming up to a 90 degree corner. i thought shit there better not be any vehicles coming around it too so just laid it on its side and kicked away from me, had the king of all grazes down my left side and was sore for days lol
Wait until the water jacket in the steering stem starts leaking. I restored a YZ80 that I gave as a Christmas present to my nephew. It took me over a year to find the seals. Great bike once it was completed!
Man Joe it pisses me off when sellers tell you all these lies! You provide a great service here of educating and highlighting your followers to help us save time and money, and along comes these jack wipes ripping you off! This seller deserves to have his "family jewels" clamped down on by Vinny😮 for all that damn lying!
I’m going to give you some free advice. Whenever you are checking out a bike ALWAYS pull the mag cover and the pipe. You can rotate the crank with the mag flywheel and look at the piston via the exhaust port.
Like a seller is going to let you work on his bike, the rule of thumb is, if it doesnt run, it needs full rebuild. Its an old bike. If its "lightly seized" it may have been full of water for 20 years. Trusting a seller is insanity. The guys who say "It'll run!" are the real idiots. Anything ran at one time, and may run again after 3500.00 is spent. But then Ive bought probably 200 old dirtbikes in the past 8 years, there is nothing a seller wont try. Rust "doesnt matter" because the previous owner left it out in the rain, is one story. The usual thing is taking the chain off, and taking the shifter off....hoping a buyer wont be able to tell the whole thing is seized solid. Its not on last bore and worn out, "trust me". The forks wont go up and down because "they have too much air in them" Yeah, that's it!
They were screamers. Nothing could touch them on the top end. 83 they moved power down a bit to were more useable for most riders. And 83 was the sweet spot. And 84 they killed it. One of the biggest turds ever. Only way to make them fast was to get an 83 cylinder and disable the "improved" brake controlled shock dampening crap. Took them a long time to come back from 1984
This is part of the reason my 3 1979 motocrosser's are pretty much museum pieces now. The cost of parts for these now 45 year old machines has gotten ridiculous. And I only want NOS, so I now get the pleasure of just sitting and admiring them while sipping a beer. Riding a modernish dirt bike will be my way of getting that riding itch scratched.
wow. I was scanning programs and saw this thumbnail and immediately knew it was a 1982 YZ125. My first motorcycle. Great machine! I upgraded to a brand new '85 and raced that a couple years down in Dallas and Oklahoma. Good memories!
@@CJRSBKpaint is easily removable, worn out or cracked motor cases, bearing and bushing housings that are ovaled out, cracked plastics, bent frames etc are not so easily remedied. It might not look like it but from what I’ve seen so far this bike is a prime candidate for a restoration.
I have watched many of your videos and I don’t think I’ve ever heard you swear!! Classy stand up guy with ton of experience and talent I’m glad you plan on fixing the bike it’s definitely worth the effort time money to repair.
THIS WAS MY FIRST BIKE! SAME BIKE! it was also a 82! This looks like mine! My father sold it on me after my parents got divorced.. I was so upset over this bike 20 years ago... I have been looking for another one my whole life and can never find another. What a great running bike... Youre so lucky to come across one of these..
4/28/24 I worked at a strictly Yamaha dealer during this period. Our inventory couldn't keep up with the demand of the j-L series of these, primarily handmade bikes. I rode my good friends 1975 mono shock when it had less than 2 hours, Crisp. I was hooked on Yamaha till the 1989 RM 250 remake from bottom-up, I believe it was a collaboration with Hurricane Hannah. Just sold the 89 RM to a excellent mechanic, I was real picky to whom I would allow this treasure piece too be owned by. Bro, Ill keep my S/A on any usable parts for you.
Reminds me of a dishonest eBay seller I bought from once before. I've learned since then to sniff out the bad ones from the good. I'm thinking that someone slapped a bunch of parts together and sold it as running to you
Yes, they do..'people' are generally turds BUT, I'd still call the seller and remind him what an arse he is to lie about this rig...Won't make a difference but it'll make ya feel better..Wonder if there is a piston even in it..
Thanks for the video! I bought one of these '82 YZ125's "as is" - pretty cheap, didn't realize how many things could be wrong with it. Many things that can cause problems on this kind of bike (early water-cooler). Mostly engine problems - crankcases are wrecked, etc. My choice is, sell parts off it, or do a conversion. I think I will eventually end up with an air-cooled "YZ175"... I am collecting parts to install a 1982 IT175 engine now. I think I may end up with an awesome trail bike! Making "Lemonade" so to speak!
The seller just thru this motor together to sell the bike, he left the clutch out so you could not turn it over. Good thing Joe is loaded and this will not affect his bank.
Even when you figure in his losers, Joe is still making a killing on these machines. Having both the knowledge of how to fix these and the money to keep turning them over is a big-time advantage. Most people either don't want to get their hands dirty or don't have the time and money to flip as many of these as he does. Who knows, maybe his old lady has money, which would allow Joe to do what he loves. 🤷🏻♂️
@V..X.. Goddamn! I was a bike/quad/sled/personal watercraft mechanic for years. I should get back into it and try growing my channel. For that kind of money, I'm going to seriously consider it. 🤔
I think he should still record his meetings when buying them. Even if it’s secretly. Even if he blurs their face. It added to the story and when it comes to this bike it would have been awesome to see and hear the guy and just see what kind of guy lied like they did.
Chicago has nothing to do with it. live in the west suburbs 45 mins away from the city with a little traffic. My cr125 looks nice and runs nice. would never fk over another person, way to stereotype.
Love the channel! Been a while from your older videos of ripping down the road in front of your house about 85mph on a 1989 CR500. Lol. Your videos are awesome! And your knowledge of these old 2 smokers is incredible. I grew up with these early 80s- mid 90s bikes and they still kick ass!
You guys are judging a kid who is sharing his hobby with the world, he never claimed to be a master mechanic nor does he have that vibe. You guys hold average people creating interesting content up against the perfection you consider yourselves to be all from the safety of your moms basements. Not to mention you are judging him for banging up a nut thats coming from a literal pile of trash someone wanted out of their back barn. He’s not Jett Lawrence’s pit crew chief, hes just some dude in his garage that enjoys inhaling old 2 stroke exhaust before opening the garage door.
Why wouldn't you get suspicious of having a lower end when he's saying it was just a clutch. Let the buyer be ware, this should resonate inside your head on every purchase.
It's not that suspicious. When needing parts for such a bike, you often have to buy extra parts to find what you need. Or sometimes you might find say a whole engine for half the price of the one small part you need out of it.
Nothing to do with dishonest sellers, but about 8 years ago I bought an 82 yz250 for $150. I never tried starting it, but it was in far better mechanical condition than this thing. It was just ugly. Ripped up seat cover. Spray painted plastics and tank. Etc. I put $100 worth of new plastic on it, a $50 seat cover and shot some hard parts with $10 worth of spray paint. I put it on craigslist for $600 and waited for the phone to ring. Then I dropped the price to $500 and waited some more. It never rang. No worries. Summer had just started and mid-ohio vintage days (the largest vintage mx swap meet in the world) was coming up! I got there Thursday after work. The guy camped out across from me saw me unloading it, came over and said "First liquid cooled yz250. Not very popular. Only made them one year then totally redesigned them. Quirky bike. Don't see too many of them around. What do you want for it?" I said, "I don't know. What do you think it's worth?" He said "I'd give you 450 for it." The event hadn't even officially started yet and I'm seeing some crazy high prices around here. So I think he's just trying to get the drop on me. I say "I appreciate the offer. But I'm gonna see if I can do a little better than that." He said "Yeah, you might. This is the place to find out." After setting up camp I took a lap around the swap meet and found some amazing deals! I picked up a nice $40 gas tank (the last piece of plastic I needed to make this thing look cherry), brand new gold aluminum handlebars for $15! A $30 gold chain and $5 grips. I mean, now this thing looked as good as ever! All things considered, I decided on a starting price of $700. I had faith that the right person was in this massive crowd, and theyd find me before the weeknd was over. Lunch time Friday came and one drunk, I mean gentleman spent a little time looking it over. "Does it run?", he asked. I told him that its got spark and compression, but I've never tried starting it (facts). "Would you take 5 for it?" I told him "You're a little early. I'm gonna give it till the end of the day, then tomorrow I'll drop it to 6. If its still here Sunday, you can take it home for 5." Not another person looked at it, the rest of the weekend. As I was packing up to leave on Sunday, I saw him walking up the row and said "It's still here!" He said "Oh yeah! Sorry man. I blew my wad. See ya next year." The guy across the isle overheard our exchange and said "Thats too bad. At least you found some more parts. So you're moving in the right direction with it." I asked him if he still wanted it for $450 and he said he only had $400 left. I said "Close enough. I'll help you load it." With that, I was lucky to literally break almost exactly even. ... and that was only because I paid so little for the bike, to begin with. ... not including my time and cleaning supplies, a few nuts and bolts that I went and got for it, storage and movement expenses. Note: If I'd accepted his $450 offer, on day 1 (ironically, the best offer I would receive), I could have profited a whopping $140 (prior to spending $90 on more parts, then being offered $50 more, only to finally settle for $50 less). Moral of the story: Understand the market and value of what you're buying, before you buy it, or you have nobody to blame but yourself. That being said, the first liquid cooled YZ's are NOT very popular in the vintage MX community, due to their quirks. Therefore, combined with a short production run, parts are not in high demand either. Hence values are relatively low. Dont take my word for it. Do an ebay search for the 1982 yz125 and filter for "sold items". Literally zero matches. People can ask "$3k all day". Doesnt mean people are paying it.

love that bike ... you took me back a few decades every nut/bolt you were unscrewing, I remember having done the same years ago multiple times I can't believe someone threw that together and straight faced reassured a buyer all's well .... and took his money Obviously it's why he dropped the price .... he wanted it gone After the shock there's sill a lot of good stuff there so I would rebuild to as new condition and enjoy it
The power valve search for my 92 rmx has held up the project for years. Ive also been looking for a 89 or 90 rm250 jug with power valve assembly. People want over 600 bucks for this stuff on eBay lol
You live you learn ! .............when exactly are you going to learn? Never take the sellers word on anything. There was time when you could but those days are looong gone.
I remember those days. And you're right - they're gone for good. People have no integrity anymore like they did when I was much younger. People just suck now.
I hope for the sake of sanity you contacted the seller and asked why he lied. At least put him on the spot. Send a invoice for a 200 dollar scumbag tariff
I raced back in the early 80’s and had one. My dad bought it for me on Friday and the next day Saturday I raced it and cleaned up 1-1 in the 125 Jr class, came third in a wheelie contest and then raced again the next day Sunday got a 1-1. It was a great motocross bike for sure ( a bit nose heavy) however truth be told I preferred the 1981 YZ 125 over the 82, that was a sweet 125 MX bike. Good memories seeing your bike, all the best.
I always used the same tactic when bike shopping. When it comes time to talk money, I take the cash (I try to keep it in all 20's) out of my pocket in a big wad and show it to them. 9/10 times as soon as they see it, they don't want to give it a chance to go back into my pocket so they take whatever my lowball offer is. People LOVE the look and smell of cash. 🤣
You said it was a rare bike, so no loss. Also you never lose money because you make it from RUclips with your videos and wouldn't have content without it. You're a win win all the time.
Absolutely rebuild it. You obviously have the skills, so labor isn't a cost (except for the machine shop). It sucks getting ripped off, but I still think you got a deal. As you said, the bike looks straight which you don't often see on vintage MX bikes and I love the YZ's (I had a new '78 250). I'm sure if you found a pristine '82, the seller would be asking more than 2K for it.
I googled up parts and power valves for 82 yz125 Ebay had power valves for that bike 168.00 bucks I found a shit load of parts you can still get for this bike
Bottoms line Joe is not losing out except on labor and clearly this is his passion so it a labor of love. These 82s can go for 4K. He can easily still make a profit after the rebuild.
beautiful classic, i had a red and white 82 yamaha yz80j wen i was at school, also had a very similar incident buying a Suzuki ds 80 from a swap meet few years ago, all the loose bolt etc, will be interesting to see it start up again, nice condition overall
Definitely worth restoring if the parts are available there's still definitely a market for vintage mx bikes out there. Even putting in what you figure it will cost if you decide to sell it when fixed you will probably still turn a profit on the bike. Great videos keep up the good work
I had an air cooled YZ125 when I was a teen. I don't remember what year the bike was. It was fun, fast and powerful for a skinny kid. Sorry you got screwed but at least you're making some of it up on content. Great videos.
He's gonna sell you the power valve on eBay...
In every gear 😂
😁
I was gonna say check the phone number you had on the seller against the power valve sellers on eBay…
Savage lol
😂😂😂
Start a Wall of Shame to advertise who the dishonest sellers are.
It’s $800 bike - it’s common sense and he said he bought it and could not fix it
Those black & yellow YZs are just awesome. & the classic lettering on the seat is so simple & timeless. I can picture the new line up in the shop during the 80s. & the smell of oils & new plastics!
Me too. Those were the days. Now, the smell of two-stroke in the air is super rare, with all of these blubbering fartmobile four-strokes around.
Good point about the lettering. It looks awesome

As someone who knows literally nothing about bikes, when you said, "Nothing about this bike is good" I actually said out loud, "Come on, it's still a beautiful old machine that has been taken care of." What's worse is these type of sellers sell to folks that have little knowledge of fixing bikes so their out a ton of money on parts and labor. It just makes the used bike market look horrible when they are so deceptive like this.
With this bike I get the nasty suspicion that someone couldn't get it running, scavenged the parts he needed for a different bike and sold it as "running but with a clutch problem".

I say "I appreciate the offer. But I'm gonna see if I can do a little better than that."
He said "Yeah, you might. This is the place to find out."
After setting up camp I took a lap around the swap meet and found some amazing deals!
"Would you take 5 for it?"
I told him "You're a little early. I'm gonna give it till the end of the day, then tomorrow I'll drop it to 6. If its still here Sunday, you can take it home for 5."
Not another person looked at it, the rest of the weekend.
As I was packing up to leave on Sunday, I saw him walking up the row and said "It's still here!" He said "Oh yeah! Sorry man. I blew my wad. See ya next year."
The guy across the isle overheard our exchange and said "Thats too bad. At least you found some more parts. So you're moving in the right direction with it." I asked him if he still wanted it for $450 and he said he only had $400 left. I said "Close enough. I'll help you load it."
With that, I was lucky to literally break almost exactly even.
... and that was only because I paid so little for the bike, to begin with.
... not including my time and cleaning supplies, a few nuts and bolts that I went and got for it, storage and movement expenses.
You took the dry shaft on this one Joe...
Happens to the best of us!
😢😊😅
He was definitely given a prostate exam with a sandpaper mitten. 😫
@@stkyfngrszmooth IF I HAD A VIEWERSHIP DROPPING CHANNEL...I would remove parts "before the video reveal" and make wild claims and scary thumbnail title!
THEN ALL THE COMMENTS will boost my revenue on youtube!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The seller didn't just stick the tip in...
Great video. Rebuild that old school bike. The plastic is amazing and the fact that it is YEAR ONE for the YPVS makes it worthwhile.
Clutch out of the bike is a dead giveaway.
I may have a donor engine. I believe it’s a 83 .
love that bike ... you took me back a few decades
every nut/bolt you were unscrewing, I remember having done the same years ago multiple times
I can't believe someone threw that together and straight faced reassured a buyer all's well .... and took his money
Obviously it's why he dropped the price .... he wanted it gone
After the shock
there's sill a lot of good stuff there
so
I would rebuild to as new condition and enjoy it
This is why people with knowledge ....... are important.
Call out the seller every time this happens. Its funny
The piston is missing? Can hear the rod flopping around. Nope, its there.
Exact same thing I thought.
Me too!!
Always do a compression test before buying
How could he ? the clutch was removed the bike couldn't be kicked over ,did you even watch the video ?
compression is easy to fix but the reason this had no compression was far worse that what it normally would be
I had 1982 YZ 125 when I was a teen, looked exactly like yours!
👍👍
Theres no way id pay more than 500 for a non runner
3:07 best part when Benny comes in and instantly went for an inspection
Dont worry bro, life will award you with something nice, keep going.
you got it for $800 knocked him down $400, when fixed excellent bike.
Is there not way more than 800 value there even without the engine?
@@stkyfngrszmooth I dont get why people would care about that, its still a lowball offer doesnt matter if the cash is visible XD
I see a lot of foreshadowing in the first 7 minutes of this video :)
Part it out! Don't fall in love with it...
I googled up parts and power valves for 82 yz125 Ebay had power valves for that bike 168.00 bucks I found a shit load of parts you can still get for this bike
Awesome video love the small laughs when you discovered the flaws, I learned a lot watching you tear this down I really want to hear that thing run!
Bottoms line Joe is not losing out except on labor and clearly this is his passion so it a labor of love. These 82s can go for 4K. He can easily still make a profit after the rebuild.
that seller should have bought the bike back. what a thief liar. you are one heck of a solid mechanic man.
beautiful classic, i had a red and white 82 yamaha yz80j wen i was at school, also had a very similar incident buying a Suzuki ds 80 from a swap meet few years ago, all the loose bolt etc, will be interesting to see it start up again, nice condition overall
Had this 125 bike growing up.. the yamaha i most remeber is the 1978 TT 500.. TI 360 ran strong too ..
That's unbelievable no power valves Joe you cannot trust what sellers say anymore feel for ya great videos li,e them class thanks👍🇬🇧
