Who doesn love an e46 m3 it is one of the all time greats
scottbradford19 thanks for commenting!
thedownshiftchannel sure. Thanks for making the video
Best shape
Best M3 by a long way
Watched this video again. It’s been a year since I watched this and now own my own e46 M3. Spectacular
Excellent work! What did you go for spec wise?
I went the titan silver smg sunroof route. While not the most sought after, it was a one owner, who lived across the street from the bmw dealership in a mansion. He was a much much older gentleman with multiple m cars in his garage. This particular had a scraped front bumper and his wife wanted it gone.
Got it rather inexpensive...I’ve just finished resealing everything in the engine bay. Refreshed all the hoses and coolant system. Subframe and bushings done. All stock minus the bushing which are Turner rcab and powerflex subframe bushings.
I was planning to stay oem but there are wheels, dinan/Koni suspension, csl headers in my garage...this car is keeping me from saving any money whatsoever....
Sounds like a great car! Get used to spending money on it it’s never ending haha! I still think for the money nothing will touch it!
I agree. You mention initially that this car can do everything. It is truly a car that is multifaceted. I keep thinking about where else I could have put the money towards something better and everything I come up with is almost always a dedicated track car, dedicated cruiser, or dedicated something. The e46 m can achieve all of it without being dedicated and still fit my infant in the back.
Congrats on marriage btw. I’m not sure I’m 100% caught up on your videos but I’m glad to see relatively recent development. I look forward to more.
@They call him dangerous Bryan congrats man! Everyday when I leave the house, even if it’s in a different car, closing the garage and seeing the rest end of this thing and the fat tires gives me a feeling of content.
your unpolished (one where ther are no false smiles and orgasms and selfie cam with hands everywhere) review is so refreshing. very informational too
Thanks a lot! The issue is a lot of people that act OTT get the views because it attracts a young audience. But we like to keep thinks real here!
lou hutchinson totally agree
I know its a financial mistake.
Still buying one tho.
It’s 100% worth it. You should
For a car that's so fickle so many people still love it, why, do you all love pain?
Theres no doubt in my mind that this is THE car I'm getting next as i know itll be cheaper than owning a 21 year old Land rover that does 17-19mpg and brakes all the god damn time.
May I add, I bought one. Pretty stock excellent example. Every time I drive it, Rev it out, slam that second gear it brings a smile to my face. What a car.
This is by far the best sounding E46 M3 I've heard, that exhaust is perfect for that car!
Thankyou dude
Class raw review, love it. I'm looking at one for my next car and I think your video has persuaded me even further to buy one. 👍🏻
Hope you find a good one they are great cars
Agreed with your honesty, mate. It's much appreciated and refreshing to hear. I'm glad you got the car you wanted!
Thanks much appreciated! I have a few changes coming but still really enjoying owning the car
Has so much more character and looks than the new rivals. Will be a timeless drive built to last. Beautiful car❤️
Marilyn Osborne thank you!
I bought my E46 M3 Coupe Manual about 3 months ago, it has the competition package with alcantara wheel and CSL steering rack. I wish mine had no sunroof, great choice. Im a fan of all stock though. Until people get behind the wheel of this car it's hard to explain the sheer joy I feel driving it! I chuckle as I listen and feel the throttle. Coilovers on mine actually helped tweek the suspension for seasons which I liked. Great video, awesome car.
Graeme Paterson thanks for the comment! The CS are really climbing in value fast! I was considering the steering rack as a mod
great video. Ive been working on a shortlist for a new car for about a year now and i've recently come to the conclusion this is the car for me. I test drove one last week and i'm in love. Agree with a lot with what you said, 18's and no sun roof etc. just trying to find one now. wish i had bought one a few years ago when they were super cheap.
Although you may have saved some money a lot were not being properly cared for a few years ago. Most are enthusiast owned now. Good luck finding the right one for you and be sure to check out the other videos!
This is one the best M3 i have ever seen. Very beautiful.
Thankyou I still own it now this was over a year ago
Fantastic insight man, good video. Wanted one of these for about 10 years+ and finally looking to get one this year, thanks for sharing your experiences and maintenance etc. Absolutely beautiful on Arc-8's and in Imola red, pretty much made up my mind that I want a red one now!
mattheww055 thanks dude the feedback is much appreciated. It’s great that you are going ahead with it after wanting one for so long you really won’t regret it at all!
I have polyurethane bushings everywhere and yes it makes an amazing difference. I got a much larger anti-sway bar setup front and back. They are both adjustable.
But I opted for coilovers instead of Springs so I could set an exact height for a 50/50 weight bias.
Ended up with a one owner o6 M3 vert. Enjoying every bit. Bought in July’18.. unfortunately my vanos failed & just did the rebuild for 2k. I think it’s worth hanging on to. Car is incredible. Your M3 is beautiful 💫
Thank you very much! I’ve done some more recent videos with it also. Good luck with yours in the future
thedownshiftchannel Very much welcome. I will subscribe & tune in. 🍻
As a 3 year E46M3 owner he’s giving a very accurate description. Be prepared for a Non stop project even with low miles (54k) temperamental motor and setup,
when running well it’s a uniquely fun experience.
Thanks! The juice is worth the squeeze but you’re right it is constant
Fantastic video. Will be purchasing an M3 hopefully by the end of this year, just shopping around for the right one. Read most of the major E46 M3 forums and learned a lot, but this video definitely adds more insight. I can't wait!!!
Really glad to be of help! Good luck finding the right one for you and be sure to sub for more e46 videos
Same here bro I love E46s I have had 4 and one of them I sold and brought back twice 😂 I currently have an M3 and a 330CI M sport love them.
J B hahah awesome! It’s just a great platform that ticks all the right boxes
thedownshiftchannel I have got a H N R suspension upgrade on mine but I didn’t shell out myself it had just been fitted by the previous owner and he did give me the Oem springs with the car. It is lower than a badgers tadger 🤭so low in fact my usual Jack won’t go anywhere near underneath so I’m having to research to find one that will. I want to repaint my callipers and do my own pad changes etc. My only complaint is the pixels in the tv/sat nav I have had one go on a previous one and this ones one there way ffs. What do you think or know about the android upgrade versions ? You can pick them up brand new off eBay for £180 which is cheaper than a second hand screen for the Oem 💁🏼♂️
J B I was looking at those as I have some dead pixels yeah! It always get sucked in by other parts like the brake kit and wheels etc
thedownshiftchannel there advertising a 7-1 Android as an updated version to the 5-1 which was everything everyone raved about on the E46 zone although I never took the bait and stayed Oem but I think 💭 I’m gonna give one a try in the summer 🤫 🤫 just in case the missus hears me we will need a new patio or dog basket or shower 🚿 or anything that is not Bmw 😂
Life gets in the way sometimes! Hahah
I love it! And it’s a manual! I love it even more! E46 is the best shape!
Thankyou! Be sure to check out the other videos on the channel!
🤣 I like how you said at the end... "I don't have plans in selling it soon!" Smart! Beautiful car indeed! 👌🏼😍
activeflak thanks much appreciated!
Well put! Bravo from a seasoned E46 M3 enthusiast!
Thanks much appreciated! Be sure to subscribe plenty more videos coming
A very eye opening insight about one of my all time fav cars. Thank you for sharing our experience.
TheJayant911 thanks a lot that’s great feedback!
Beautiful example of the great e46 M3, I owned a blue one, full spec about 5 years ago but due to kids and others advising me to get rid of it due to the vanos unit I did.
Miss that power and beautiful drive though, loved the note it made starting it up and talking it to the red line.
Yours is a beautiful red, good vid. Love your location too, really sets the car off.....
Thanks much appreciated! Glad you like the car and enjoyed watching. At least you have owned and enjoyed one For that length of time
good vid, this guy knows what he's talking about. my own thoughts: basically always do a PPI (pre purchase inspection). I don't care if it's your grandma selling you the car, just do it. if you're unwilling to cough up the money for those inspections, this isn't the car for you lol whatever price you settle at with the seller, just add $5k into your savings account because if you maintain your car properly, that's probably how much you're going to spend on it within the 1st year of purchase, especially if they haven't done the big 3.
this man has so much charisma
Very well done sir. I enjoyed that. Agreed about your GT3 comment as well.
Thanks it’s a great car I’ve covered about 25k in it already!
He said "after a couple of year you spend almost the price that you paid for the car" is the realest thing about buying a high performance used car . Because it's a continuous job keeping on top of service and upgrading
Still got the car and it was worth doing so because even at twice the price there was nothing I’d want more!
Aah, the M3. Truly a masterpiece.
Thanks for watching!
thedownshiftchannel Fastest reply ever, good to see how active you are. Keep it up.
Thanks we try to keep as active as possible!
Great video.....filled me with fear about mine 😂😂 got the small rust spot on the rear arch, due inspection 2 and apparently it’s a good idea to get the vanos done at 80k FML
Ask Akerr definitely check the arches out! Also the Vanos sometimes you can notice a significant jump in power of the old seals were passing at all so it’s totally worth it!
Great video guys! Really informative video, looks like shes a keeper
Dank Boost thanks for checking in again!
Not really a fan of bmw' s until watching this video. It's a beautiful car and understand your reasons for getting one.
Simon West thankyou much appreciated. I really have been super happy with this car
Hi mate great review just bought myself a carbon Black manual with Sunroof. Was wondering whom carried out your rust repair on the rear end.
Enjoy
Hello mate. Congratulations on the new car. To be honest I wouldn’t recommend them based on service. Are your inner arches bad or just outer?
great video man. I can tell you take pride in your ride
Marshall West thanks much appreciated!
what do you think about the e90? the twin turbo. good platform?
The line that earned my 👍🏾 was “because I’m not a hair dresser”
The red leather just didn’t do it for me...
Love it on the 18’s! Imola red is beautiful.
Thank you! Be sure to check out the newer videos
Glad to see the Imola red! I've one in Imola red too. It's the best colour I think and a fantastic car overall. Great video, cheers!
TheGreatDimebag thanks a lot! Stick around we are working on the next video of this car
thedownshiftchannel looking forward to it mate! Keep uo the good work; Fair play to ya!
TheGreatDimebag thanks mate!
TheGreatDimebag I
Thanks for the video man. I'm torn between e92 and e46. E46 seems more of a headache now that it's close to 20 yr old. Do you think e92 is close enough in the experience?
I think the E92 is fairly equal with its issues really the key either way is to get one for the right price or pay a little more for one that’s been done already. The E92 also has issues with rod bearings and throttle actuators etc. Both are good cars but I feel like the E92 as a standard car feels more tame and sifter but with mods they can be great
Great video and very honest! I have recently bought a 2004 M3 and agree about the manual shifter. It feels a little woolly....did you change the shifter or just the gear knob/stick as I have seen both on RUclips and both apparently improve the feel and precision
Congrats on the new car. Yes it’s the E60 shifter with the F10 M5 knob and it’s way better than OEM definitely worthwhile
@@thedownshiftchannel Thanks
That sounds incredible, i still want one in the future, if not at least an e36 m3. I'd be living in bins if i had to run one of them 😂
CATALYTIC UK haha! I came close to an e36 the prices are similar now! The e46 just had a little more edge to it!
CATALYTIC UK also houses are over rated
thedownshiftchannel cant drift a house can you?
CATALYTIC UK exactly 😂
Gage Petas America got short changed with the e36 though it’s basically a 330i over there. The euro model had ITBs and was 80hp more than US.. the prices are very close in the U.K.
Great video and interesting from a fellow e46 m3 owner perspective. How much did the engine rebuild work cost you? You did the rod bearings and head gasket at the same time?
Hi thanks for watching be sure to subscribe more m3 videos coming! Yes both at the same time king race bearings, arp hardware, cometic headgasket and updated oil pump. £2500
8:46 your comment re the raw feeling of the car. I have a neighbour who has a nissan leaf (excuse my language) and he cannot understand why I drive an 18yo E46. He thinks his l**f is wonderful and so he's been badgering me to drive it for some time now. A while ago, I gave in and took it for a drive. After weeping unashamedly for some time after driving it, I took my old 328 for a drive and thanked my lucky stars that my kids have begun driving internal combustion before electric becomes the universal standard. It was a bitter sweet day ;-).
Awesome! Make sure you get your kids into rusty old BMWs they will never be able to afford drugs that way!
@@thedownshiftchannel Hahaha, true, but BMWs don't rust here in N.Z. I'm shocked when I see the underside of cars in the U.K.
One more tip. Our injectors are very finicky. When I say finicky I mean they need to be scrupulously clean to put out max power.
I routinely run some sort of extra detergent in my fuel like Techron or Berrymans Chemtool B12.
At the same time, I run a fuel lubricant that's very inexpensive called Marvel Mystery Oil. I add eight ounces at every fill-up. That keeps the fuel pump lubricated, and moving Parts in the fuel injectors lubricated.
These two seemingly minor things make a huge difference in performance of the S54 motor. It makes my mid-range and top-end stronger. It makes my idle better. It cleans out all the oil in the intake system and much of carbon in the intake valves.
Ordered an ‘03. Ended up being an ‘03.5. Still have it. A/C and rear end seals have been the only mechanical issues. Headliner is about to need replacing, door armrest paint has crackled, and some of the stitching in the rear seat has failed.
Nice. If well cared for they are great cars
Thanks for a very objective and informative video!I've noticed that you decided not to change the stock airbox.I'm thinking about going for the Eventuri intake kit. They say that it's the only one that makes serious power!Have you heard about it and if so what are your thoughts?Best regards from Thessaloniki Greece!
Thanks for checking the video out. We have plenty more if you would like to subscribe!
I personally would use the CSL style airbox as it does increase power and response but the eventuri is the next best option. I wouldn’t touch anything else though as many options don’t seem to work as well as stock.
For the best gain for the money a 4.10 differential is the best mod but it will up the revs on highway driving
Excellent video. You're right about the driver involvement, you would need a 997 GT3 to get the same visceral experience. The engine won the International Engine of the Year award outright in 2001 and the 3-4L category from 2001-2006. It's a masterpiece!
1seipai I would really love to try a CSL just to see if it could justify saving some weight with mine! And the expensive intake
thedownshiftchannel Yes the CSL is great with the weight saving. If only it was sold with a manual.
It would be really cool in a manual! The SMG works well on the track so I do understand BMW decision but a good driver with a manual would be just as fast
This guy sounds like he needs a hug.
Thanks for sharing your experience with this car. Great video
Thankyou! A year on from that I’m still enjoying the car. Got lots of new parts for it for upcoming videos!
@@thedownshiftchannel Good to hear! Will keep an eye out for the new vids ;> The E46 is the only car I've ever gravitated towards, even over other supercars. It has a very unique and timeless design.
Thankyou it was certainly in my top 5 cars I wanted to own so I’m really happy to have done it!
Fucking mint M3 and loving the new intro too!
Thanks man! Much appreciated
Another 🔥 video! Love this car
carscarscarscarscars thanks much appreciated
holy shit, having a m3 and living in that house.. the dream
Living in the bins...
Cool, good and clear vid. I just LOVE that color. Mine is carbon black, but I would trade it for the red any day!🔥👌
Thanks I really wanted this colour or Laguna seca blue when looking. Carbon black looks great in different lighting but so hard to keep clean
thedownshiftchannel Yep, you’re totally right! I clean it every week...even when I drive it just once a week. The paint is almost coming of from all the washing...🔥😂
Nahh, just kidding. Most of the times I only spray (with carshampoo) it off.
Keep it up. Ciao!👍
I am not a hairdresser either but, damn I do love my Black exterior with Red interior :)
Haha this was more a joke aimed at a friend it’s a good look really it just wasn’t a good car I looked at.
See a downshift video hit the play button!
randomdude12 you smart. You loyal
What made you chose the E46 over the E92
M3? A newer car, while more expensive, would have less time/age based repairs
soopa doopa the e92 actually requires the same level of maintenance with the rod bearings etc. I do like the e92 however as a standard car it’s a little less involved with it being a little heavier and more comfortable however with the right mods and weight saving they are great too
I’ve gone and bought one. It’s a run around for a year before I go buy a house, that’s what I told myself. Trouble is I love it and can’t bear to part with it.
I still have mine and can’t bring myself to let it go after 5 years
@@thedownshiftchannel Glad I know my future then! Thought the car is already on 160k miles. Let us know if you’re ever around East Yorkshire for a run
@@DavidS-Videos will do!
i brought quite expensive one at start of year individual velvet blue 61,000 miles. straight away i spent 6 grand on f80 brake set up and full resto underneath, powerdercoat, bushes and boot floor done. bottom end already been done. I have a 813bhp rs c8. and a van so m3 goes in garage. low miles and hopefully not have to spend so much on it lol, I like the red colour of yours looks awesome not keen on the front diffuser though, looks plonked on outta place, never keen on black grills on these...keep oem plus keeps value .
Enjoy your car it sounds like a good one
ive been lusting after an e46 m3 for years after having my 330 years ago. I think your maintenance issues / costs have put me off, think I will just need to admire from affar instead of getting one myself. Think I will get a m240 next as new enough to not have issues but similar size to an e46. great video though, always wanted a passenger ride in one of these but never had a chance!
Jack Naylor the best bet would be to find one that’s had the maintenance done and snap it up! The best thing is e46 prices are starting to appreciate so vs an m240 which will depreciate it’s actually a better buy
I also downsize from 19 inch to a square 18 inch setup. But your wheels look much nicer than mine. Mine are kind of boring looking made by a company called D-force(18lbs each) I love the looks of your wheels.
Deplorable Dave thanks for watching Dave! I have now opted for Bilstein coilovers and will be making a video fitting them and reviewing them soon
@@thedownshiftchannel
Bilstein is a solid Choice. Nothing wrong with Komi yellow shocks and Eibach springs but you really can't do any kind of balancing to get the car even for proper weight distribution.
E46 M3 is all about being balanced. And coilovers are essential for achieving ideal balance.
You'll actually find the ride comfort to be quite good with your Bilstein's. It may seem harsh at first but give them time to break in. Also you will need to adjust them at least two times because the Springs will settle . Try adjusting him a little high initially over your target measurements and eventually they will settle closer to what you wanted to end up with.
I suggest you don't go too low. This is very important. My car is looks plenty low but it's at the prescribed height that most of us run on the track and even on the street.
Measure from the center of your wheel to the top of your Fender in the front should be 13.5 in. The measurement in the rear should be 13.0 inches. That results in a level chassis at as close to a 50/50 weight distribution without doing an actual expensive corner balance with digital scales.
But some people object to is that the front and rear fenders will not be matching as far as clearance on each tire. That's just the way the car is built.
Too many people match the look aesthetically but that results in extreme weight bias on the front tires and completely upsets the handling of the M3. Do not fall into that trap. Judging by what you said in this video I don't think you will. You will go for what gives you the best handling. Go ahead and do some research and you'll find out that my numbers are correct.
I used to track my car all the time and would routinely beat much more expensive cars with greater horsepower because how well it handled. And I have the convertible model which is much heavier and it was still a beast on the track because of all how I had it set up. Well, that and about $30,000 worth of modifications. LOL.
Car is naturally aspirated and only 300 horsepower to the rear wheel. I spent very little searching for horsepower and spent most of the money and breaks and increased handling. I replaced a lot of the Lem BMW stuff with high-end items from Turner Motorsports anf other companies.
Don't apologize for overthinking. I gave every modification I did very careful thought (and research) and ended up with the brilliant car that I own today.
You are doing the same thing and that is the correct path.
You are well on your way to having an extremely well sorted out extremely good-looking E46 M3 never sell it.
i have a 330i love it a lot and plan on getting the m3 just something about the e46 so beautiful feels great, wonder what its like to drive a m3 😍
Awesome! I had a 325 also they are still great cars the m3 is just like an enhanced version, way more grip way more power and more revs etc
It is a beauty !! And the color as well !!! Can you give information about the exhaust it sounds much better than others. Thanks.
Hi it’s the agency power rear section with OEM centre section
The paint job is just too perfect.....
Thanks it looks better on camera it has stone chips irl
That color😍😍😍
I noticed your drivers side wiper arm has a little bend in it. When I bought mine it also had that. It looked weird so I got another one and the wiper wasn't effictive. It would skip a few spot on the windscreen and over 70mph it didn't sit on the windscreen well at all. Is this your story too?
Mine work fine and I’d honestly not noticed but I currently have another one so I will check both and compare
"cause I'm not a hair dresser"
Sly meme
He looks like a hairdresser and even sounds like a hairdresser he can't lie or deny it 😂😂😂😂
Liking your car ocd man , my kinda guy 😂👍🏻
Sammy CFC it’s a good and bad thing at times
imola red is such a goddamn pretty color
Thanks! It’s haven’t to have more paintwork done again but it’s worth it!
nice guy, bit slow paced review
car looks nice though
wat tires? 265/35/18?
csuxak47 thanks. It’s a 265/35/18 Michelin Pilot sport 4
Personally I think that the e46 M3 looks best 100% stock. With that said, those wheels are well suited to the car and I too think that 18s look better than 19s at times. Also agree the staggered setup, although cool is a bit unnecessary in terms of performance. You have a nice example. Only thing I'm not lovin is that carbon lip.
KingRichard thanks much appreciated. Be sure to stick around for more videos. The best thing is all the mods done are easily reversed without damaging the original car
In a year and a half your channel as done well ....mines on 34 subs haha 😂😂 only been pushing it since 2018 properly tho ....keep up the good videos iv just smashed the subscribe button 👍
Rev & Redline thanks much appreciated! Good luck with pushing your channel forward just don’t forget to enjoy it because that’s the most important part
Rev & Redline awesome that’s what it’s all about
Totally agree with all you have to say. Owner of a 2004 M3 myself, didn't realize how big of a money pit the car was going to be when I first got it... totally worth every penny though! Really can't think of another car that could replace it with same amount of money. My 2014 370z is fun, but it's just not the same feeling... VQ37VHR is not the S54B32!
Did you happen to have your RACP repaired/reinforced by Redish? Super lucky to live in the UK... im in midwest USA and don't think the shop I'm taking it to is going to do nearly the quality of work and attention to detail as these guys.
My next car to add to the collection is a 997 Turbo... funny thing you said 997 GT3, seems like we have very similar taste. What's your opinion of M2 or 1 Series M? Like the body styles and sizes, but I just don't think I can get used to turbos... they are fun but just really, not the same kind of power delivery! I've an Audi A4 Avant 2.0T FSI with APR stage tune 1... 303 ft lbs torque in AWD audi wagon is hella fun, but still is not nearly as fun as the E46 M3... best M3 ever made!!
Thanks for the comment really appreciate you took the time to watch and write it!
The 997 is a great platform it will make a nice addition! The boot floor on mine was changed under warranty for the later one however it will crack still no doubt. Redish would be the place to go if possible but we have a few other people really clued up with the process too!
As far as the 1m and M2 go they are the right size and I think out of the newer bmw it’s the ones to have but totally agree on the turbo thing it takes away some of the purity that makes the car so special
Wow crazy u were able to get it replaced under warranty... no idea what work was done on mine from previous owner for subframe problems.
Btw, where did you get your carbon fiber lip? I've seen a few online but just want to make sure I'm purchasing quality and from a good seller. Really modernizes the car's front end and gives it a more aggressive, meaner stance/look. Mine came with a cheap, poorly overpainted plastic lip installed... instantly ripped it out the moment I got home lmao.
The previous owner was an ex BMW employee so managed to get the boot floor done and new wings under warranty just before it ran out.
The lip is from eBay although last time I looked I couldn’t find it again. There is a type 1 and type 2 and I could only find the larger version now
Thanks for quick replies back! Ebay is definitely where I've been looking, glad to have a confirmation of a successful buy on there. Perfect.. its videos like these that reinforce the notion of just how legendary and awesome this car is to own, even in 2018 among so many newer models running around.. I always get a nice laugh and a big grin on my face each time I pull up to the driveway after work, just in awe of something from 2004, still such a blast to drive over a decade later. Drives just damn perfect. Thanks again for everything, great video, I'm sub'd!
I'm so lazy, I need to finish my Dual VANOS rebuild DIY video and get it uploaded... help out somehow and put my fair share into the community ;)
Cool vid, cool car. I went the Z4M Coupe route, s54 as well. E46 M3 and Z4MC are both very nice in my opinion (but not the Z4M cabrio, that's a hairdresser's ride, sorry if I hurt anyone :-)
Z4m coupe is a very cool car and a great chassis good choice!
I like the wheels i thought they were m sport competition pack at first glance they make it look like a 1 series M super nice
Benjamin Prohm thanks they do share a similar design to those and the csl wheels also. Thanks for watching
Is this your daily driver? How much you spending a week on fuel if you dont mind me asking?
Yes it is it’s roughly &50 for £200 if driven average mixed driving.
We are close on the timeline.
I bought mine E46 M3 in september 2017, so now i'm little over 1 year into ownership. have driven it for 20k km's.
Spend about 7k€ on maintenance, but I'm loving every second of this car. (mine though is worth close to 40k, due to low milage)
Mine is Carbonblack and it has a sunroof (sry) :D
mine is completly standard on the lovely 19's.
I'm not to sure about suspension upgrades, because I think the OEM suspension is already really good.
I am going to change my Diff very soon, to a 3:91 ratio. (little more pull, little less to speed) you might want to consider that upgrade.
Awesome thanks for checking the video out. I’ve since decided to start gathering some parts and bought some Bilstein PSS10 coilovers and a Purple rag steering rack and solid coupler. The diff would be the next thing on the list it’s by far the best bang for buck in terms of acceleration! Sunroofs usually cause me issues with me being tall and spoiled a few cars for me so it’s become a personal issue haha!
thedownshiftchannel Yeah the stearing rack would be the second upgrade on my list. Shortening the steering response is a worthwhile upgrade!
Haha, I’m with you guys on the timeline.😅 I’ve bought mine in november 2017. But can you tell me what all that maintenance was about? Because I’ve bought mine also for almost €40k with 52.000 km’s. And it’s now at 68.000 with one big service, that’s it. So should I worry, or...?!🙈
@@PureDriveTV that all depends on how you drive it :) I bought mine on 81.000 km's and it's now on 102.000km's. (when you get close to 100.00km's, thats when big parts start to wear out sometimes.) I had to swap my gearbox because I had a noisy bearing in it, so that was already €4.500,-. Also my Diff was worn out, this you can check by the 'play' on the right rear wheel axle, many vid's about this on RUclips, most of the times you will see oil on the outside of the housing as well, failing seals. this sets you back for about €1.500,-. I also had to swap my centre axle bearing, the rubber around the bearing can 'break', this happend to me as well. but thats rather cheap, about € 200,-.
things I haven't done yet, but I'm counting on doing is of course the bearing shells of the crankshaft and maybe VANOS.
If you take it to the track you should also add the well known Sub-frame cracking issue to the list, but I if you never go to the tracks, this might never occur.
These are the big things.
keep in mind;
This car needs to warm up after a cold start, so keep your eye on your oil temp meter, don't floor it as long as your oil temp is below 80 degrees Celcius. Most people only think about the engine temperaturen, but the Oil's in the gearbox and in the differential also need to warm up to work properly. (thats one of the reason why the manual gearboxes shift so hard when cold, specially into second gear).
small things is that I burn up a set of rear wheels every 10.000 km's :) those 255's aren't cheap either.
thats about it for me.
enjoy your ride,
it will probably be irreplaceable.
Southpaw Sir Thanks for the good and clear answer! I think I should be fine for a while...😁👌
I’m also looking to buy a 1M next year...but have to save up a lot first!🥴😅
Cheers!
Awesome video, I’ve got a vert e46 m3 and slowly wanting to do bits to it but like you say it is expensive!
Thank you! Enjoy it the maintenance is the important part and you can save for the mods!
Totally agree it would take something way more expensive to tick the same boxes
BOOSTBLOG thanks! Unless a lottery win comes along it may be around a while longer
thedownshiftchannel hopefully the channel will get bigger and you can keep this and get more cars
WOW !! beautiful..
Roxanne Wal thanks!
cool preview, very honest. I have one in carbonschwarz and this is just an amazing car !!! but hard to find in a good shape...
Thank you! And thanks for watching! Be sure to subscribe if you want to see more
What wheels are on this car? Are you running a square setup?
Daniel Hussey hi thanks for watching, apex arc 8 18x9,5 square... there is a video on them if you want to check it out
Love Imola I have an Alpine White E46 M3 as well.
Imperatore7777 very nice they are so rare!
thedownshiftchannel Yes indeed it took a long time to find one!
Imperatore7777 I have a black on black one but Imola is so nice.
Ameer Khan thanks dude
Yeah really love Imola on the E46.
Nice car, best colour IMO. What's your view on the E90 330i M-Sport?
Bald Guy thanks! The 330i is a good car they seem to respond fairly well to tuning too for an NA car!
Do you mind telling us what you've spent on various maintenance and repairs?
The engine work was around £2500 but I did extra with the oil pump etc bodywork around 1000 as the front wings and boot floor was warranty work so didn’t cost. The rest was modifications really
@@thedownshiftchannel Thanks, that's not as bad as I was expecting compared to something like a Porsche rebuild.
A full rebuild would be maybe 3500-4000 but yes not quite Porsche money
Is the e46 m3 a lot more reliable than the e92 335i? I had an e92 335 also very unreliable
Michael Broski the m3 is generally much more reliable than the 335i although still expensive to maintain
Gorgeous M3! IMHO the current height is just right, please don't lower it :D Have you considered a carbon boot lip ?
Thanks I was only planning to go about 10mm lower anyway but I am happy with how it looks. If I was to change I would go with the CSL boot. Thanks for watching
Also that sounds amazing
Awesome car 😍 Love the sound of a high powered NA. Where is it possible to get a #DownShiftChannel window sticker?
Philip Aston thanks Phillip! It’s a shame NA is slowly disappearing barring really high end cars! We are hoping to make the stickers available on a site once we get setup! Currently we have sent a few out on request if you have us on Facebook or Instagram get in touch in a few weeks time when we are home!
thedownshiftchannel Thanks guys 👌🏼 I think it would look good on my little Clio RS200. All the best and keep up the great videos
Philip Aston thanks much appreciated! Nice car you have!
Nice M Sir, All the best
Ronnie Galloway thabkyou sir!
How tall are you. I’m 6’5 and thinking about getting one. Just trying to see how I stack off.
Anthony Swanson hi I’m 6’4 and I don’t run the seat right back and have more than enough space. I really struggle with Japanese cars and the like but fortunately Germans are tall!
thedownshiftchannel awesome and thanks for the response
Anthony Swanson no problem at all thanks for watching
What's the style of the wheels? They look similar to style 127, but aren't the same thing.
Lukas Buteliauskas APEX ARC-8 et35 and 12mm spacer on the rear
Awesome! Thanks alot man :) Also, do you ever 'get used' to the power of the car in the sense that you don't think "damn it's fast" anymore? Because with the modern day cars having so much power, it's easy to get used to higher standards in acceleration etc. So like with my 328ci (which I drive on holiday back in my home country) during the first drive I'm always pleasantly surprised by the speed, but that dwindles quickly. So with yours, do you ever feel like you want more power?
Lukas Buteliauskas no problem at all! I think 90% of cars you become desensitised to the straight line speed. However carrying speed and power out of corners is where this car comes to its own
Yea I can see that. Maybe you'd be in a better spot to compare e46 M3 vs non M, but I slapped some Bilstein B14 coilovers on mine and while the ride on the street became harsher, on track it's insane how much better it is. On the street on reg suspension you think it handles fine, then you go to the track and it feels like a boat. With coils it transforms the car completely, coupled with semi slick tyres it's hands down the best investment I've made to my car probably :) I mention this because you pondered on suspension, it depends how you use the car though.
Also, where did you buy the wheels from in the UK, I'm seeing alot of ads from the US, not many UK links. The going rate seems to be about 300 dollars each.
Rear subframe, rod bearings, vanos, head gasket Bmw designed a car for 2yr lease.
real isrealite the subframe mounts are the only real issue. The rod bearings are a serviceable part on all high revving engines and many have lasted 100k+ without issue. The head gasket can be a result of misuse although it was revised to attempt to prevent that. Considering when it was produced it’s specific output was up there with exotics of the period and it was way more reliable. It did win international engine of the year. also 3-4litre class every year it was in production
Great looking car ✌️
What is the exact measurement of you tire + wheel size , i know you mentioned wheel size 18” square, can you please tire size 265/45/18 or 255/50/18 ..etc, thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks! It’s 18x9.5 et35 front et23 rear (35 with 12mm spacer to allow the wheels to be swapped front to back) tyres are 265/35/18
Man I can barely hear this guy talking. Sweet m3 though. Mines is 100% stock and silver in manual...drives amazing at 153k miles
Thanks for watching. Noted on the audio however we have changed camera and mic since this video
What tire size are you running on your square setup?
Marlon De Jesus with the square setup the car has a lot more front end grip so when pushed to the limit it doesn’t understeer as cars are designed to
Oh and 265/35/18 and 18x9.5 et35 and 22
IMOLARED
What is the exact exhaust setup on this car?
Agency power rear section with standard centre section
@@thedownshiftchannel Yeah, you guys in Europe got the best center section .. we have the cats on our headers it’s pure garbage. No headers on this car?
@@ES-REDROT euro headers are very difficult to improve on so the cost is not worth it. We just have a section between the headers and centre with two cats
nice summary - very similar reasons for why I bought my E46 M3. I've just ordered the agency power axle-back exhaust so looking forward to installing it and seeing how it sounds. See more detail at - wheelwell com/john-solo/1muf/2003-bmw-m3
John P awesome enjoy that! They sound great
smart car, love it
kronoCSGO thanks much appreciated
How wide are those ARC-8's?
jjami14 18x9.5 et35 and 12mm spacer oh rear
What's the name of that gorgeous house in the background? Thanks
Grey Towers hall
@@thedownshiftchannel cheers mate
No problem!
Car looks dope as fuck 😍
Thanks appreciate that!
bro i love the car and cheers on your attempt but just some constructive criticism, your voice tone and mannerism seems like you can't be asked. i feel it, but i doubt it works for the mass market. keep at it bro!
Thanks. We’ve had comments from both sides of the table on this video and obviously it’s hard to please all but generally our audience isn’t younger children like a lot of channels so we don’t try to over hype things. Although this video could have been improved with a little bit more emphasis on that
