I didn't even catch that, wow I'm dense.
Because if they were just straight animals, some scenes couldn't be exaggerated enough to reach their desired reactions to specific anime tropes like the whole "MC forced to be in an embarrassing but otherwise unexplainable sexual looking situation" like with the Miyubi shower scene. So theyre hybrid (more specifically, kemonomimi) to give them a pronounced sense of humanity so that their relationships with MC can be looked at on a more natural level by viewers (because lets face it, if Ranka were to be fully wolf like the males are, her being a love interest just wouldnt fly). The males remain full fledged animals to still keep the foundation that this anime is placing MC who really hates animals, in an environment _only_ populated by animals and not just a bunch of demis, which wouldnt hold the same effect.

no they actually didn’t. In the manga the horses girl left Zebra Girl alone and her true companions were the donkeys. When she became a champion of battle card games and become a celebrity the horses call her back to the herd but she refused to return to the horses and stayed with the donkeys. That’s what actually happened.

I actually really like how later in the anime she comes back with the two donkeys playing the game with them. I think its funny how she embraces her "donkey" relations and actually accepts the other two as friends, that subverted my expectations cause I thought she wouldn't appear again, much less with the two donkeys.

This make so much sense now when I was watching some random documentary on horses and their closest relatives are just dwarf versions of horses that live in Mongolia instead of actual zebras
Well infact are they not dwraf horses, but domestecated horses got over time much bigger. The, are even the same species (even though domestecated horses came from the in the 18th centery extinct tarpan horse, not the Przewalski's horse). In the bronze age were horses not much bigger than wild horses, and were because of it to smal to ride effectivly. Acient warfare had basicly armies of warwaggons pulled by war ponnies.

I edited my comment so my replies make no sense.
First,mules are hybrids of male donkey and a female horse, not a diffrent species. And second is the Equidea family also known as the horse family, which includs horses, donkeys and zebras. And like the big cats Panthera (lion, tiger, etc) are equines also part of the same genus, Equus. But still is the anime cortect in pointing out that donkys and zebras closer to each other than horses.

The main message of the show for me is the reason humans are Earth’s dominant species. Jin-kun ate lunch with a wolf, warded off a charging mammoth, treated an endangered panda like an equal, and beat a zebra in a “Zebras aren’t horses” debate. He did all that because his human intellect and excellent judgement are worth a million animals! He has about half as many physical advantages, and yet he still beats every animal that challenges him, like a gangsta! Everyone top dog ‘til Jin-kun starts barking the truth!
There's only one person at the school more intelligent than he is, and that's Ruka. (Dolphins out-point us on raw intelligence.)
