Broooooo.. When Osay said "I'm from the Westcoast, fk that" I felt it in my soul..I'm from Compton and my fiance is from Uganda. I was there in June/July and experience some of the price gouging. I allowed my finance to negotiate all the deals, because she's great at it and can speak the language. I also, experience the Boda guy hating, because he heard me speaking and made a slick comment to my fiance about dating foreigners. 😂
Great conversation fellow Africans..😀.. As an older entrepreneur who has been up and down this winding path, I know too well about what's being discussed.. I remember hearing that farmers here always can't believe it when they go to the supermarkets. The prices they get for their produce are far too low but what people in general pay at the supermarkets is far too much.. According to the farmers, what they produce shouldn't be out of reach for many people the way they see it. This is the proverbial " the good, the bad and the ugly" world of business. If one can't navigate it, they get left behind.. It is the question of sink or swim situation. One doesn't have to be a street fighter to win. It is simply the question of knowing what is fair for you, and for the other person and then stick to one's guns. I am glad that as Africans we are talking about this, but I must say there's a long way to go before we realize and learn that business requires brains and courage, not some black magic or unwarranted or misguided humility.. Born and raised in Uganda it’s a vague environment to do business in Uganda and this tallies to poor leadership where they block business flourishing with high taxes and using institutions like UNBS to block some stuff not coming coz someone big is in that business

Had to laugh about the meat conversation a butcher wanted to give me a kg of fat when i explained i wanted meat he was saying i was a wiseacre in luganda then he said muzungu its ok i dint think you can manage this meat and refusee to serve me 😂 Uganda is not for the weak for sure

Business people, traders or venders sell their products at very low profit in such cases negotiation is paramount to get the best of your sales. Lastly Uganda is not place of hate like one might experience in the western world such racism it’s simply ignorance, luck of education and exposure. I’m Ugandan been living in Australia for 18 years but I miss the culture and the way people live and interact with one another in my country. I’m black American, expat currently in Kuwait, wife is Ugandan, and planning how to be in UG permanently at some point. It is not a just simple, “let me just go there”, as the system(s) of making a life are so different from the West and how things are done. I have learned and have had to adjust myself a great deaI for sure and don’t view things in the same way after so many trips to UG. You have to adjust quite a bit. Am Ugandan born with half my education, living and working in the UK. Frankly I understand 100% what these guys are saying. Like the times a close educated relative annoyingly remarks “maybe in the UK that’s how you guys do it” just to brush me off over simple stuff like a blatant contract breach scenario and to me poor business decisions, and the number of times I get workers at the airport insulting me in local dialect assuming am non Ugandan and don’t understand what they are saying…it’s like people have the attitude of “just do business for today and make it work by all means” or “just turn up to work to earn for the day” on a daily basis
I totally agree & can relate. Ugandans are hostile when they feel like you have more exposure than them. So even in workplaces they’ll spread false narratives about you & block your opportunities. It’s very sad, but the scarcity mindset here is crazy. Lovely place to live if you have passive income from somewhere else, there you can avoid all the drama
It's a dog eat dog world. Just anticipate what's gonna happen before you start transactions then give your terms and control the outcome. They'll go with your terms cause they need the deal more than you do cause there's competition.
I think since you guys have been living there for so long you forgot what it is like here in America. Been a lot fo complaining from ODJ lately. Take it from someone who lives part time her and part time there, the food, the peace, the energy there is well worth the stuff you have to put up with.

That's a mentality, we are working through these tough conditions learning and learning and every year is progress as long as you don't keep the outside mentality of wanting things to work when you want them
I think most guys from western world still have that entitlement mentality in the market. The business game is like that. Capitalism is never a fair. Capitalism is based on exploitation of man by man. U have to develop a tough muscle. Don't play by with a victim mentality. Learn the local game, keep developing yr value everyday and commercialise yr products.
