Tom Horn: Old West Assassin

- Опубликовано: 20 сен 2024
- Tom Horn first arrived in Wyoming in 1892. He had spent most of a decade chasing Apache down in Arizona before diving headfirst into a feud known as the Pleasant Valley War. Although Tom’s actions during the feud remain unclear, he most likely fought on the side of the Tewksbury’s against their avowed enemies, the Grahams. And despite wearing the badge of a Gila County Sheriff’s deputy, Horn would participate in the lynching of at least three men. This was followed by a stint with the Pinkertons, a job that saw Tom working on the behest of the cattle barons up in Johnson County, Wyoming. Once again, Horn’s involvement is somewhat shrouded in mystery, but he is suspected of assassinating at least two men on behalf of the large ranchers. Whether or not that’s true is unknown, but Tom did help to put an end to the notorious Red Sash Gang. Next, Horn would drift south and find employment as a Range Detective at John Coble’s Iron Mountain Ranch, doing pretty much the same work he had done in Johnson County: investigating stock theft and working as an enforcer for large spreads. The only difference was that Horn had lost all faith in the judicial system by this point. Rather than waste time arresting criminals only for the courts to set them free, Tom resolved to handle business his way, and it just so happened that his way entailed a whole helluva lot of killing. Also discussed: The Apache Kid, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, the Spanish American War, Matt Rash, Isom Dart, and Black Jack Ketchum.

Glad you stuck it out
Like the sun coming up, another fantastic episode😂

@@WildWestExtravaganzaI have heard many people say that Butch Cassidy is one of the few intelligent criminals. The way I know that they wouldn't shut down in Bolivia is Butch always had at least a plan a b c and d. As a matter of fact his gang would get angry at him because he would plan for every possibility and he would spend hours and hours doing that. When he robbed the gold bullying on the railroad of all the guy Carpenter had was one of them railroad cars that Carpenter was pumping up and down to get to the sheriff. Cassidy was looking on from the distance and he said smart man that Carpenter. Butch Cassidy is never known to have killed anyone and since I like the pinkertons will never believe he died in Bolivia then that would remain true and he probably died without killing a soul. Can't say the same about Sundance kid although he didn't back shoot or anything he was involved in some murders. Cassidy told his family or the man that said he was Cassidy told his family that a man that owed their life to them identify them to try to throw the pinkertons and other people off their trail.it didn't work though the pinkertons went to Bolivia listen to the story of the shootout dismissed it out of hand and kept posters on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid. Alan Pinkerton said there's no doubt in his mind that they are still alive because Butch Cassidy would never be stuck in a house with only one way out. As I said every time he robbed a bank he annoyed his gang because he prepared for any possibility. Even before it became evident by more and more evidence that Cassidy was not killed in Bolivia and the grave belong to a German man. Even before that fact from what I know of Cassidy I like the pinkertons dismissed the Bolivia shootout out of hand.
@@WildWestExtravaganzayeah he did love telling stories which means that his account of shooting the 14 year old boy is probably just that a story. Butch Cassidy was never bothered by Tom Horn who may have been after him but he never got within sniffing distance definitely. Tom Horn is just a gunman and not very intelligent either Butch Cassidy on the other hand was a criminal but very intelligent.
Your Bronco Apache video is one of my favorites. It's amazing to think that were wild Apache in the 1920s. I wonder how much longer they might have lasted.
There's still natives living up in those mountains, not many and they are more modern mountain people than old west injun but they never left
It’s crazy to think about
😎👍🏽
It occurs to me that I have never, not once, been disappointed in your videos. Other channels post a "blah" show sometimes, but I watch because there are some really good ones mixed in. NEVER have you posted a "blah" show. Never. Thank you for that. All the work it takes, tedious leads that don't add to it... just all of it, thanks for doing this right. Keep on!
I really appreciate that thank you
Been waiting for this part to come out don’t have time to listen tonight will listen at work in the morning will go ahead and like tonight because none of your videos have ever let me down will be the fastest 35 minutes of the whole day!
Thanks! Wrapping the story up next week
Another banger from my favorite RUclips fella 💥
My man

Hell yes!
Always happy to hear you tell these tales, sir
Hope you and yours are, and stay, healthy and well
Thank you, Likewise
The last US cavalry units shipped out to the Pacific in WW2 without their mounts but they took their mules. The last US cavalry mounted charge occurred shortly before in the Philippines during the Japanese invasion. Filipino troopers wielding sabers and 1911s, led by American officers defeated a Japanese infantry detachment twice their size in savage hand to hand urban street combat.
Incredible
We still have calvary.....they just mount on Blackhawks now
You’re a gem Josh! I listen to your podcast and watch your channel on You Tube. I learned a lot of new things about Tom Horn . Excellent job. Thank you and take care!
Wow, thanks!
I just cant get hype over any other channel or podcast besides yours now. I go back and listen to episodes a second time and always find a lil nug that i missed the first time. Got me wondering about The Apache Kid now and if he was part of that raid in the 20's...wrong side of 30s fanboy. I aint scared to admit.
Thanks buddy!
@@WildWestExtravaganza PRETTY INTERESTING VIDEOS
As always Josh, informative & entertaining!
Just went through Cheyenne & was thinking that Tom must of been a heck of a shot, cuz it is Always windy here!
I bet!
Keep it up Josh.
Been waiting on this episode! Thank you sir for putting this together. Great stuff man keep it up!
History and Humor....pure culture Josh.
Great story!😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for sharing your style of storytelling with us.
My pleasure!
Thanks for sharing Your research efforts with us Josh. Your narrative style has kept me eagerly anticipating every episode since the days of Bloody Beaver. Coming from a Wyoming ranching family that first homesteaded here slightly before the time
Mister Tom 🐎💩 Horn made Himself infamous here, the stories passed down through the generations made a firm impression.
Last episode i made the family opinion of this despicable individual too explicit in the comment section and the algorithm automated censorship platform ran me off. Maybe another place and time. Thanks again for everything.
Best Wishes to You, Your Family and Friends.
Best wishes to you
josh back again with a banger
Thanks man
We Joshua's are pretty cool! I listen to these while working in my garden everyday 🎉
Thanks Josh!
Any time!
Thanks for throwing in the photos Josh. I know its more work, but it sure pays off. Keep em coming brother.
#BloodyBeaversMatter
Horns murders were not just limited to Rustlers. He cast a wide loop to coin a phrase at the time, which means he wasn't very discriminating if the men he killed were actually rustlers or innocent. Horn was a bushwacker. He murdered men from cover. There were two prospectors found dead in their camp that evidence implicated Horn as the killer. One can only assume he mistook them for rustlers he was hunting. The murder he was hung for was another case of mistaken identity. The man he was hunting had left his ranch for a few days on business and his son on his way out to do chores, grabbed his father's old coat and hat. Horn shot him off his horse from the brush.
1890s Wyoming was a place dominated by powerful influencial cattleman who could simply accuse a small rancher of rustling and make him a marked man who's life was in danger. There was a tremendous amount of resentment between the poor and the rich.
Thx again! Another great episode
Gracias
Can’t wait 👌
Thanks Wes!
I'm really glad you're back and I love your history and storytelling. I do kinda miss the rolled R of the Extravaganza though ... can it come back?
I know I'm in the right place when you started talking about Tom doing a lot of packing...and I'm saying to myself...yeah I bet he was! THen you hit us with it lol....Classic.
Nice upload! Thanks Josh you never fail to entertain... BTW Semper Fi. Let it be known that the USMC STAY ready for any, and I do mean ANY, situation. I did know this little mule train factoid. Thanks for enlightening those that did not. Also Thanks to Mr. Tom Horn, lies or not he served and that counts. Leatherneck is my personal favorite ,Devil Dogs run a close second. OoRAH!
One thing that I don't think could ever be questioned, Tom Horn's loyalty to his friends.
He was certainly loyal to his bosses
@@WildWestExtravaganza Hell i reckon that makes it even more impressive when you consider it that way!
Thank you brother
Any time
As always, very nice work.
Thankyou
Peace
Many thanks!
Loved this one!
yesssss part 2 to too two
This is part 3
@@WildWestExtravaganza I realize that. my bad. was out the last week. can't believe I missed a menage a trois
Foreshadowing that cattle friends line
Thanks for mixing in jabs and jokes with these incredible stories. Great Job!
My pleasure!
Until next week. Tom did it his way.🤠🤠
I've just checked my library and it appears in true dumbass fashion I seem to lent out a book and not had it returned. Worse still I've forgotten the title. It's the story f a soldier that fought in the Indian wars and went on to be quartermaster general of the mule trains in Cuba ie Tom Horn's boss. I'm sure a historian like you will be able to find it, great source of information and a very interesting read.
Another well researched episode and very well narrated as always.
Yes u been looking in to black jack! Been wanting this one for a long Time
Fihally! caV-al-ry....not caL-va-ry...thank you!! After 49 years of hearing noted historians and hundreds of movies ,tv shows ,and documentaries mistakenly say mounted soldiers are caLvary not caValry....sheesh! Personal pet peeve!! You do great work amigo...Keep it up!!
It’s a hard word to say, when U say it fast it sounds like I’m putting the L first but I ain’t
Oh hell yes .
Bra, that thumbnail lol.
I still say you're better than Jean Shepherd. Kudos to you, man.
We need a bunch of Tom Horns today.
How come?
Hell yes!!
Love your videos, and I completely understand trying to get paid for them, but the adds are on the excessive side bro
So just a heads up, that mostly is based on your viewing habits. RUclips has a profile for each user, including their ad tolerance. The more ads they think you’ll tolerate, the more they’ll show you. For instance, sometimes I let RUclips run in the background for my daughter and I’m not always able to skip ads, so the volume of ads increased. Kind of annoying but I did recently subscribe to RUclips and it’s well worth it. No ads and I get RUclips music for free.
"Burg-u-lar-y" lol!! Love you, brother!!
I’m trying
History does have a way of repeating itself. In the intro, you said Horn got sick of catching bad guys and judges letting them go. Thats starting to happen now as well 😢
Great observation dude.
@around 10:30,the apache kid made a clean permenant getaway..??......... this is a revalation to me, a ray of white light if you will, i'd like to think his discresion in both cultures led to a long happy enough life..............................
You ever heard of a mule skinner? That’s someone who drives a team of mules and what have you. That’s what Bill Monroe, and even Dolly Parton sang about.
Yessir
If I didn't learn anything else I believe it's pretty fair to say Tom Horn didn't mind telling a lie. Thanks for the video. I've learned a lot. Mainly that it seems Tom Horn was a murderous SOB
When are you going to do one on Pancho Villa? That would be a great one to do.
Read about Sgt. Reckless, the famous horse who made 51 trips during the Korean War. She was the belle of USMC ball. She ate bacon and eggs, drank Coke.
As a left handed red head I forgive your prejudice and I won’t say it is unfounded. We are a devious bunch and are most likely up to no good.
Haha
Dang! You sound like my ex-wife! 😂
@@sandman9390 maybe I am your ex wife and I’m playing a long con to stalk you on RUclips videos. I warned you that we are devious.
@@WildWestExtravaganzaI don't know how I feel but I do know that Tom Horn was acquitted in a mock trial in 1993. There is a lot of evidence that his enemies son killed his son. Supposedly some people had overheard them talking about killing the boy. Time Warner might have gave a false confession and put a rope around his neck.
Wooooohoooooo!! My Wednesday is complete.
Tarzana, CA is named after Tarzan. The post office in Tarzana has some Tarzan comics and is named after Burroughs.
Good evening sir
Good evening
Hell yeah, brother.
I’m telling you that you need to look into the courthouse shooting in Carroll County Virginia. This happened right before the Titanic sinking and there was national news coverage but was quickly forgotten because a week later the Titanic sank.
Has some of the most country gangster one liners ever said. And the Courthouse with the bullet holes in the steps still stands in the middle of town
For some reason I wasn't notified of this episode 😕..... But at least I'm seeing it now. That said....
YEEEEEHAWWWW MF'S!!!! LETS GO!!!!
Really enjoying this series on Tom Horn, but I was curious if he and Frank Canton knew each other?
I don’t know. I’m sure they did
A true man of the west. They needed a man like Tom Horn. Keep things under control.
Steve McQueen. WoW. Any new WWEx episode is better than none. But come on Man. Where's the Epic Doc Holiday episodes a coming?
Soon

You went off topic , I would say about half was about Horn!
Oh no did I??????
Again. I have nothing more to say on the matter.
You're wrong. The Spanish American War was 15 minutes. Red sash. What is this the tombstone cowboys? Tombstone is my 2nd favorite western. My darling clementine is my absolute favorite. I'll be your. Huckleberry anytime. Phoenix and Chewbacca mom
Unlike the Red Sash gang in Wyoming, the Tombstone cowboys never actually wore red sashes
