    It was used by the crew of Pan Am Flight 73 to escape the hijackers who took over the plane on the ground at Karachi airport. Without the crew, the hijackers were stuck in the plane. Seventeen hours later the commandos went in and took back the aircraft. There was loss of lives but it could have been a lot worse if they were able to get the crew to take-off with all passengers.

    I believe it was used in the first 747 crash for at least one pilot to escape and in the Pakistan Hijack for the flight crew to escape.

    When you will ever use this thing? You must get as well run to the emergency exit...a lot of t faster.

      You make a good point. The answer is that there's really only two times when you'd want to resort to this: if the fuselage is on fire (but the cockpit somehow isn't) to the extent that the cabin crew can't get to an exit (this scenario has never happened to the best of my knowledge), and secondly if a hijacking begins on the ground -- in that case, the best possible thing is for all the humans on board the plane who know how to fly the plane to GTFO of the plane as fast as possible, and without entering the hijacker-controlled passenger sections. This DID happen one time: Libya's hijacking of Pan Am 73 in 1986.

      Strangely enough, check out what happened to the PanAm crew at Tenerife. The KLM 747 put an engine through the upper deck, destroying it including part of the rear cockpit wall. The flight engineer nearly fell out of the cockpit into the destroyed cabin of the PanAm 747 and essentially had to move his seat forward to get out onto a floor. All 3 crew then left via the hatch.

      During emergencies the cockpit door often gets jammed or blocked.
      Also during terrorism.

      @@musicalaviator Actually, I don't think they left via the hatch, but through an opening. The roof of the cockpit was actually ripped off by the KLM 747.

    If this is a KLM Training Video, why are they using a Lufthansa 747-200?

      When they escape from the cockpit its from an pan-am 747. Boeing made the video. My guess is that all 747 operators had this video only with a different intro and outro to make it "custom".
      Edit: KLM has a couple of hangars big enough to house a couple of 747's for maintenance , they provided this service also to other airlines so, in this case it is also possible that it was filmed by KLM on schiphol airport using the 747's who were available. Pulling a 747 out of service purely to shoot a training film is going to be a little bit expensive.

      @Willem Ran Based on your comment, my conclusion is:
      -KLM recycled Boeing's 747 escape hatch showcase.
      -To get an actual KLM 747-300 out of service is expensive, so KLM used that Lufthansa 747-200 to save money.
      -The Lufthansa 747-200 was (probably) the only 747 available in the hangar at Schipol.

      No problem, after your comment i watched the video again and i noticed the non dutch but extremely typical german firetruck (deutz) standing in front of the lufthansa 747-300 so that rules out schiphol.. haha sorry at least we tried to solve the mystery!

    Why do they keep holding onto the handles when they reach the ground, do they spring back into the cockpit if released?

      Nope. Once the reels are extended, they cannot be reused. They hold the handles because the reels slow their descent. Without them they would crash to the ground

      They have to keep them away from the plane to allow the rest of the crew to escape without getting tangled on the ropes left by the previous members.

      @@curbowman I wonder if the crew of Pan Am 73 did this as the hijackers reportedly fired at them as they made their escape. They managed to shoot and kill two other people who were working on a nearby aircraft, so I guess they were just firing wildly onto the tarmac. Not sure I'd want to stand there holding the line during that.

    this Escape reels is futile . how many time in aviation history pilots had to use it ? most of the time the plane is fully disintegrated during the impact on the ground . what Boeing and airbus should be working on is in flight escape pods , or even better , detachable cabins with parachutes to slow them down

      Plenty of aircraft have caught fire while still on the ground.

      You're absolutely right. The main use for this isn't so much for fuselage fire (although what bill bobb said is correct, too) as it is for a hijacking that begins with the fight crew in the cockpit (and still in control of the cockpit) and the plane still on the ground.
      Google Pan Am 73 -- I think it may be the only real-world successful example.. It did work to at least keep the plane from taking off, although dozens of people still got shot to death by official Libyan state hijackers (who said all government work was dull?)

      Because most crashes occur during landing or takeoff where what you mentioned would be useless

    I was trained on the 747 at Boeing in late 1975/Spring of 76. There were no Appendix H simulators in those days, requiring some of the training and final check ride to be flown in an actual aircraft. Back on the ground at Boeing Field, the Check Airman and the resident FAA DPE congratulated me on the successful completion of my ride, but informed me that I had to jump out of the hatch in order to receive the Type Rating. Although we were trained on those devices, no one had warned me about this crazy twist. Having been terrified of heights all my life, I almost had a heart attack! When they realized the "prank" may have gone too far, they all laughed and told me this was a joke they would often pull on young and gullible idiots like me, and handed me the certificate! 😎

      that is correct, even on A350XWB and B787, these are stil in the cockpit...
