Very happy for Declan, but that last decision is absolutely atrocious
PSA needs to get serious with some of its referees. That last call is absolutely absurd
Horrible final call by ref. Look how high and loose James' drop was. Not a chance that was a no-let. Incredible incompetence by the ref.
Gawad knew it was gonna be a garbage call before it was made but let the ref talk anyway. Great performance from James, garbage from the ref at the end, unfortunate for Gawad.
Good game but last call was absolute nonsense. That was a stroke to gawad.
embarrassing refereeing
It's a different decision every game... scenarios like that are what give squash its notorious inconsistency :(
Can’t wait for AI to replace all the squash referees
@@xm9047 If that ever happens tennis will be first because it's way easier to do and it has way more money to implement.
Stroke
That was a stroke. Referees on the PSA are clowns.
need AI to do refeering soon huh?
Have to see it from the front but definitely looked at least like a let (Gawad is a very clean player too).
i know a psa reff and he is a total clown of a ref and squash player. I wouldn't let him ref club squash div10.
@@fanatamon Interesting comment. I had assumed super competence would be a minimum requirement for professional match refs.
I'm hoping that was the only disturbing decision in the match? Pity for James to win on such a dubious call. And of course pity for the great Gawad, Hope he can recognise that he lost on a coin toss when he perhaps expected an easier passage.
@@gp10988AI would be trained on real referees' decisions, so it wouldn't be a game-changer
Everyone loves Dec so much I think even the refs were influenced by the crowd at the end there. It was a stroke call as the shot bounced up and wasn’t a clear winner, and what’s more the line Gawad took was the line to the ball.
But look, it is what it is, all players have had bad calls go both their way and not their way on different days, but DJ deserved this win on the merit of his play and is a class act all-round, so I for one couldn’t care less on this occasion
I understand and am happy for Dec but it's not a good look. Karim is very rarely demonstrative which shows how poor this decision was. Having said that, Gawad put himself in the position where one decision could lose him the match. Or to be more precise, Declan got himself in pole position so I guess fair play. Or not. 🤔
STROKE!!!!
I didn't really believe until that beautiful recovery at 3:47... A player who can get that back, that well, is going places!
absolute howler on match ball
No let. Where do PSA get their refs!
happy for Declan, what a joy to see him at the top of his game after so many months out, fingers crossed he stays injury-free and builds from here!
Declan is a true gentleman on & off the court. A credit to squash!
Declan is an exciting player to watch. Glad to see him back!
Think the ref needs to go to spec savers on that last shot ! I’m back in wales and I could have traveled there and still had time to get that drop shot .
that last "no let". I think that was a bad call. if go to timestamp 5:18, slow speed of video down to 0.25x and watch, Gawad was anticipating and had more than enough momentum to at least get the shot back. bad call. The very least they should do on a match point is review even if no reviews left. Ending a match on a call like that sucks. London venue was clearly in favor of their homeboy.
Ref should be able to take as many video reviews as he wants by himself after like 8th point in each set
Yes, ref didn't have to rule and could go straight to replay, which is what he should have done in this case.
Just as a gentle response to those unhappy at the final no let call - I've just done a marking course with a top ref. There is now a change of style in the way calls are given. If there is an available path, the incoming striker is expected to take it. If instead they crash into their opponent's back they can be interpreted as not making an effort to play the shot. The idea is to keep the game flowing and not have a succession of lets. Would be interested to know what all you RUclips squash viewers think.
To generalize a strikers movement going into a players back as insufficient effort is to negate the possibility that that was only line available. Declan hit the ball back to himself.
Unintentionally and bad luck on the yaw out of the front corner, but as a result the only line available to Gawad in the micro-seconds he had to react was where the ball was headed and that was into Declans back.
No Lets on lazy movements should be punished.
This wasn't one of them.
Pablo Del Rio had a fairly solid game behind the clip board, but I'd be surprised if this wasn't one of those calls he'd like a mulligan on..
No let ... that should have been a stroke
He is HIM
At least the handshake at the end was not too painful 😂
How can that be a no let mr Ref???
Que buena muñeca tiene James👌muy aguerrido
Absurd call to end the match but congrats to Declan James on a great win and career resurgence
Wtf? No let was a stroke!!!
The last call was ridiculous. It was clearly a let ball if not a stroke.
That last no let decision was atrocious, stroke to Gawad all day long. Well done Declan. The Brits in the crowd went ape.......lol
Lamentable no let cuando es Stroke clarisimo.. Esto pasa cuando juengan en casa los Ingleses, ademas no se vio solo en este partido si no en muchos.. a Iker pajares lo roban descaradamente tb
Robbed. Reff has a video ref use it. Flippen match ball! Stroke all day long! Great match.
Last no let decision was the worst I’ve ever seen. Stink.
Hands up! This is a robbery
I’d like to see, displayed by the score, how many reviews each player has.
Whats happening ref straight up stroke 100% were you not watching?
Why does this 1080p look like 480p?
Time to go to the optimitrist :P
Clear cut STROKE at match ball. Referee should be investigated !!! Decision is atrocious ! Hurts the sport. Just because James is British ?!! What a sham !!
I mean, great match and effort by both players but honestly, the last "no let" was an incorrect decision. Squash has a great chance at showing off it's entertainment value in the coming Olympics -28 but if the refs don't rise up to the level of the players the newcomer audience will be so confused and probably not as attracted to squash as they would be otherwise. The refereeing is inconsistent and doesn't make sense in so many matches we see throughout the tournaments and is clearly what is dragging down this wonderful sport at the moment.
Not so sure.... boxing, gymnastics and heaps of other "games" have long had obviously corrupt refs.... doesn't stop the crowds coming back.
(I would have given a "Let" on the basis that Gawad hitting a winner from that position was unlikely. But what would a D grader know?)
No wonder Declan James was on his knees at the end. He’s just beaten a ‘Gawad ‘of Squash .
Final decision harsh to say the least. Nevertheless kudos to the tall man for some fantastic positive play.
These refs are giving no lets when these are strokes and at the most critical parts of the match. Same thing happened in the Elshorbaghy vs Makin match. Terrible refereeing
The Return Of The Dec … or … The Way Of The Exploding Dec
Reminds me of the matches between Gawad and Simon…
Declan played very well but the last call was junk. Sorry.
Who was the referee? Is there an assessor to review their performance?
I have the feeling that the refs on the PSA tour are trying to be stand up comedians with those kind of decisions hahahahaha such a disgrace for the sport.
Couldn’t be any worse.
PSA still way off with its refereeing - this is what happens when you constantly keep fixing that which ain't broken
Great to see Declan back, playing some great squash!!
Buzzing for James but shame he won it on such a poor decision. In what world is that a no let? A let would have been harsh.
when James went up 4-3 in the first...it was over
The quality of the squash referee is also miserable.
I guess the problem was Gawad's movement. He went so fast to James' body, that looked like he was trying to get a cheap stroke. The ref should have focused on the ball. It did got out of the wall. So it was a stroke situation. It happens. Declan played super well. Great atmosphere. Gawad is still a legend. Move on guys.
Nosens
There are few players that I admire more than Gawad... that being said, I am incredibly happy to see Declan playing so well and winning this match.
😂 Good joke. 'winning' with absolut ridiculous decisions
@@MarciOlii How many more biased calls were there?
Oof, terrible note to end on, such a bad call. Looked good over all up to that.
Home referee.😂
No let? What the actual f?
Don’t you hate these clips that show winning rallies by only one player?
BS decision on match ball.
absolutely a let in the end, disgraceful decision!
Happy for Declan .
yahooh!
Bonkers. Stroke all day.
Great crowd
These old referees back at again. Making ridiculous calls to end a match. Just replace them with AI by now. They are just awful. James moved into Gawads line and his drop was awful. More stroke than a no let.
Loved the crowd enthusiasm though!
I like the idea of AI refs
Yeah that's how it works guys. You just shout AI and it works😂
A pity for the tournament as Gawad really pulls in the crowds and is great to watch. A big win for James though.
No win. It was just a gift
Stroooooooooke
Ridiculous refereeing!
Match point not a Stroke if you watch where Gawad's racket was and where the was. Good call.
Come on, Declan!!!💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
I love Karim one of the best players of the last 10 years, so great to watch, but can we change his name to ‘calamari’, because he’s such a weak starter? Match ball looked a no-let all day. Line was in front of DJ and he played the man (but could be wrong if they showed the overhead view…)
Thanks for saying pretty much how I feel🤗.
