      @@fanatamon Interesting comment. I had assumed super competence would be a minimum requirement for professional match refs.
      I'm hoping that was the only disturbing decision in the match? Pity for James to win on such a dubious call. And of course pity for the great Gawad, Hope he can recognise that he lost on a coin toss when he perhaps expected an easier passage.

    Everyone loves Dec so much I think even the refs were influenced by the crowd at the end there. It was a stroke call as the shot bounced up and wasn’t a clear winner, and what’s more the line Gawad took was the line to the ball.
    But look, it is what it is, all players have had bad calls go both their way and not their way on different days, but DJ deserved this win on the merit of his play and is a class act all-round, so I for one couldn’t care less on this occasion

    • @philgarrett5498
      @philgarrett5498 10 месяцев назад +7

      I understand and am happy for Dec but it's not a good look. Karim is very rarely demonstrative which shows how poor this decision was. Having said that, Gawad put himself in the position where one decision could lose him the match. Or to be more precise, Declan got himself in pole position so I guess fair play. Or not. 🤔

  • @Fernandez218
    @Fernandez218 10 месяцев назад +3

    that last "no let". I think that was a bad call. if go to timestamp 5:18, slow speed of video down to 0.25x and watch, Gawad was anticipating and had more than enough momentum to at least get the shot back. bad call. The very least they should do on a match point is review even if no reviews left. Ending a match on a call like that sucks. London venue was clearly in favor of their homeboy.

    • @Mike-er2ih
      @Mike-er2ih 10 месяцев назад +1

      Ref should be able to take as many video reviews as he wants by himself after like 8th point in each set

      Yes, ref didn't have to rule and could go straight to replay, which is what he should have done in this case.

  • @michaeljoc
    @michaeljoc 10 месяцев назад +1

    Just as a gentle response to those unhappy at the final no let call - I've just done a marking course with a top ref. There is now a change of style in the way calls are given. If there is an available path, the incoming striker is expected to take it. If instead they crash into their opponent's back they can be interpreted as not making an effort to play the shot. The idea is to keep the game flowing and not have a succession of lets. Would be interested to know what all you RUclips squash viewers think.

    • @terrymanuatu6808
      @terrymanuatu6808 10 месяцев назад

      To generalize a strikers movement going into a players back as insufficient effort is to negate the possibility that that was only line available. Declan hit the ball back to himself.
      Unintentionally and bad luck on the yaw out of the front corner, but as a result the only line available to Gawad in the micro-seconds he had to react was where the ball was headed and that was into Declans back.
      No Lets on lazy movements should be punished.
      This wasn't one of them.
      Pablo Del Rio had a fairly solid game behind the clip board, but I'd be surprised if this wasn't one of those calls he'd like a mulligan on..

  • @SergeiFedorov77

    I mean, great match and effort by both players but honestly, the last "no let" was an incorrect decision. Squash has a great chance at showing off it's entertainment value in the coming Olympics -28 but if the refs don't rise up to the level of the players the newcomer audience will be so confused and probably not as attracted to squash as they would be otherwise. The refereeing is inconsistent and doesn't make sense in so many matches we see throughout the tournaments and is clearly what is dragging down this wonderful sport at the moment.

    • @jackieking1522
      @jackieking1522 10 месяцев назад

      Not so sure.... boxing, gymnastics and heaps of other "games" have long had obviously corrupt refs.... doesn't stop the crowds coming back.
      (I would have given a "Let" on the basis that Gawad hitting a winner from that position was unlikely. But what would a D grader know?)

    I guess the problem was Gawad's movement. He went so fast to James' body, that looked like he was trying to get a cheap stroke. The ref should have focused on the ball. It did got out of the wall. So it was a stroke situation. It happens. Declan played super well. Great atmosphere. Gawad is still a legend. Move on guys.
