It's time to start securing our off-grid homestead. With people becoming more curious of "what's down that road, we spend some time this week putting up a gate, meeting our new neighbors, and continuing the renovations on our tiny home camper.

I wish I was younger than I am, but through some bad choices I’m a late bloomer. You are inspirational and I love watching your videos. You’ve got this!
If there is anything I have learned from years of travel and seeing ranchers here is that age is a number keep on keepin on!
Same here too
Hey I’m only 74 and currently the full time caregiver for my wife. She has Alzheimer’s and probably won’t last much longer. I’m living in Florida near her daughter and great grandchildren. I have property in the mountains 🏔 of Colorado that I get to visit each Summer for a week.
Never too old. I lost my home of 40 years to electrical fire March 2021 , lost 2 dogs, kitten and 2 hens that were being treated. 3 of my sons dogs and my girl survived, he breeds Siberian husky’s. I grabbed the first apartment that allowed dogs for my son to be released from hospital-, he got burned on his back 😢 thanking GOD he healed well and is now back to work 🙏
From in the woods to in town, my dog and I were so depressed that first winter- I bought a camper mainly to take the girls up when they were in heet, and used my time to clean up gla
Ooops. clean up glass insulation etc. 🥰😊🐾 We we’re NO longer depressed. We were HOME. Went back to the apartment last winter- same thing- depressed so we came BACK up home in April, brought more things each trip in town and AM STILL HERE 👍. There IS a temporary power meter for ripping down what’s left of my little house. Estimated at $15000 to tear down SO I’ll do it coz I don’t have that kinda money. 😳. I’m working on trying to get a wood stove that’ll fit as mine is too big, won’t fit anyways, I set my alarm fir 4:30 am and turn on a heater and it’s nice and toasty getting up to take Sorcha out to pee in the colder mornings - it’s very small- easy to heat but I MISS my wood fire. I bake, cook, have a twin tube washer spin dryer - still only on sunny days as my clothesline is my means of drying things. Beats wringing them out by hand. I got extra data on my iPhone, and brought my TV that plays DVDs, I’m happy- I’m content, LOVE the solitude the woods country offers and this is where I’ll stay ♥️🙏. I go into town the once a month when my pension comes and stock up 👍. I’ll be 65 in January so,, go for it my friend,, 🤗😊👍. Just be sure to have a phone for emergencies
You might want some reflectors on the gate posts for safety purposes. Or solar lights. In case someone comes up on it at night just a suggestion
Great suggestion! Someone else said that too :) We will be doing it asap!
Those are some very good suggestions about the gate.🎯👍
You guys are Awesome!
To share a little bit about me……I’m an older woman (61) now living full time in my 32ft Toy Hauler RV. I’ve been blessed to find a wonderful RV Park right on a lake in beautiful upper central Florida. Those of us that live in the park full time are a Family and everyone looks out for one another. So, I am safe and happy. Which is so important to me since losing my husband and mother not even a year apart very suddenly and unexpectedly. Watching the two of you build a wonderful homestead on the “Ranch” inspires me to get my butt in gear to finish/start the many projects I have planned for my RV, Me and my “Sunnie” (my four legged baby) haha….plus all the neighborhood stray cats I feed. I’m so glad you don’t allow the negative comments stop you from sharing your journey with us! Thank You for allowing us “watchers” to be a part of your life. I’ve only been watching you guys for a few months, however, in that short time I’ve grown to love both of you! Wishing you a very Happy Blessed Thanksgiving!
GOD Bless. Mel.
❤️🙏 🦃
I appreciate the "giving thanks" segment. Believe it or not, we should all be thankful for "hard work." It is a gift to be able to work at something and see the fruit of your labor. One day, it will be out of your reach, and you'll wish you were young again just so you could enjoy another day of hard work.!
Don't worry about the negative comments because the people give negative comments are jealous
Be sure to add some reflective tape to the gate so no one drives into it at night --Gotta "CYA" !!
That is such a good point! Will be doing that asap!
I miss my life in Michigan lived, played & worked hard until a ♥ attack at 45 and heart surgery at 47 had me moving to Arizona. At 59 my back is shot, my heart is good. I'm looking for land in north east Arizona where I'll have trees and lakes.
Love Lake Huron.
Digging those post holes is the first step in getting your degree. Its a P.H.D in post hole digging.I earned mine after digging a couple hundred post holes.Thats your bona fides to own the land.
The world needs more Matt and Cass’s ❤
My wife yelled “Happy Spouse Happy House!!!”
You got a wheel barrow. Good! Now you need to put up two POSTED NO TRESSPASSING signs. One on each end of the gate. As you add fence, post on that also.
Exactly :) That is the plan our friend Blayne is actually hand making our no trespassing sign ! Sign with Runaway ranch flair haha
I would also deploy a few game cameras in strategic places... @@RunawayMattCass
Nice to have friendly neighbors. The added help not to mention security that offers is a bonus to off grid living.
Y’all are an inspiration for many! Love your energy and enthusiasm. Keep the videos coming !
We are working hard and having people like you here watching! Means the world :) Thank you. Cant wait to show this place transform!
We have been homesteading for 11 years now and moved during the pandemic to the mountains of VA. Homesteading is hard work but so rewarding and we started new twice 😂 plus we are doing complete reno on our house down to studs. Love the energy and positivity of Matt and especially Cass (you rock girl). We watch and enjoy every video. You guys are doing great and the right way, slow and as you can afford. Age is just a number. I am 57, just learned how to redo plumbing, electrical and framing this year. Loving every minute of it. Peace and love to you both!
You are sooo sweet! I love hearing and learning from people who have experience with this lifestyle like you! We are learning everyday and it is so good for us both mentally and physically. Some days are tuff and some days you are just on top of the world and both are part of the process. We are so happy you are here with us on this journey. Thank you! See you on the next one 😊
I’m goodness you are so Amazing! You got friend and neighbor, I would love to be part of your little community. I can’t wait to start my homestead. Keep up your good work. That’s right ignore those haters. I love you guy! Can’t wait for the next video
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
We love you too :) Keep being rad! And thanks for the support and love. We feel overwhelmed with love on here right now! See you on the next one.
Hello from West Tennessee! Susan and I really love the work and content yall bring especially the way you handle difficult and uncertain situations. We send u much love and good thought's. Please tell us where we can send a Christmas card.... TY and Happy Off grid living .... neighbors
You guys are the best! Thank you so much :) DM us personally and we would love to receive an xmas card :) Cheers friends
That is so cool you have neighbors you Already know. I’m to late to be your neighbor 😢
hahah :) Just picking our neighbors was pretty awesome!
😊
Boy if I was younger......still might do things but we'll see.....blessings to all for being who you are in christ.
Thanks so much for watching! See you on the next one
A solar gate opener is a great idea, especially when it’s bad weather. And it adds a little more security.
Gratitude is the most important thing you can do! It changes your life! So glad it was GOOD neighbors that moved next door!!! Lol looks great!
You're a good afternoon you guys hope you guys have a wonderful day keep up hope you guys are having fun out there just be careful and I hope you get everything done that you need to get done today and God bless you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Love the gate you did a great job and so glad that you have friends for Neighbors
It is going to be so awesome to share this with them as well! So happy to have you here lydia!
I've dug up a lot of "dry" concrete pours and most had dry powder. If you have the time always pre-mix the concrete. If you want 😊 it is your post. Looking good though.
Thanks for the advise! When we do the next one we will definitely consider that :)
When we put posts up my husband used a big cardboard tube to put the cement and post in. It was about 3-4’ long.
Digging holes are a lot of work. I hated doing mine twice. Can't wait to see what you guys do next.
I always use the handle end of the shovel to mix it in the hole in lifts of 6" or so.
Don't let the negative people get you down this old world has was too many of them these days
Thanks Terry! Couldn’t agree more :) We are keeping on keeping on here doing what sets our souls on fire!
So cool to have your friends next door!
A literal dream for us :)
I remember when I was young so much energy I enjoy your videos and you are thankful what you have
The gate is looking good. I would not cut off the top of the post. I would mount a cheap solar light on it.
Hi from Australia,i am 78 this month and we had the 70's,and did similar exciting things and what you are doing is just great.all success and happiness love to you Tez
peoples thoughts about you don't matter they don't have to watch. just keep being you and do what you want. they don't live your life or pay your bills. I can't wait to see your homested grow.
Happy Thanksgiving Matt and Cass. I couldn't for the life of me think of why anybody would leave you guys negative comments. You guys are great
Don't cut the post, mount a solar light on top and it will give light if you come or go during the night so you can see to unlock.
We will be doing lights and cameras up at the front :)
Awesome job all around. I grew up in middle TN around Dale Hollow Lake. Live in FL now. You're in a beautiful area. Keep doing what makes you happy.
LOVE that area so much! Dale Hollow is special!
A no trespassing sign locked and loaded will be more effective
Great job putting the gate up
Cream color would look good on upper cabinets would go good with your backsplash
an idea for cheap baracades andother construction. Check with your local electric company for used poles. Many will give them away, andthe posts are great for pole barn construction, 2 posts on each side of your gate will prevent drive arounds
Y'all are great, happy, cool, interesting how could anyone say anything negative. Some people smh!?!?!?
haha :) Thanks Jane! We keep the haters on the back burner and connect with those sharing similar journeys or supporting us!
Put some big rocks on the side of the gate so people can't drive threw on sides
First time watching your video I found it just randomly. Love your content. Looking forward for your next one.
So happy to have you here on this journey with us now! Welcome to the Runaway Fam :)
Hater's will be hater's! Y'all are doing great keep on doing y'all's thing 👍👍👍👍
Happy Thanksgiving to you all. Wishing you many blessings with all the awesome trimmings that go with the holidays,
Amazing work. Great update on the runaway ranch! You’re in it.
Success is not measured by the amount of money you put in something it's measured by the happiness it brings you all you have is time enjoy the process of the whole thing 😊❤
Happy Thanksgiving Matt and Cass!!! I love you guys!!! It's been such a great year and one thing I'm thankful for is finding your channel. You are an inspiration!!! Keep up the great work and have a wonderful holiday season!!! I can't wait to see what 2024 brings to the ranch!!!
Looks great guys. Y'all have a good start at a prepper community. I'm from Northwest, TN. around Paris & Kentucky lake area. I don't see how anyone can leave negative comments, you guys are doing great. Keep on keepin' on❤
Appreciate that love so much :) Such a pretty area up there!
Glad you mentioned the production side of things cause you are doing great with all the tech stuff that sometimes goes un-championed. The recording sound quality, soundtracks, lighting, and B roll stuff really make for a great overall experience!!
It takes alot to produce these videos and we like to share a bit behind the scenes of it all sometimes :) Thanks for the endless support!
Awesome job thanks for sharing the beauty in your lives.
Thank you for supporting us and sharing this all with us:)
Hope everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and a safe trip.
What a great video! I'm thankful for both of you. Watching you for the past 3 years has been a blast. Thank you for taking the time to make videos of your life.
Great job guys glad to see you guys have some friends with you
The gate looks great! Glad you have your friends nearby now - many hands make light work. ❤ the kitchen backsplash looks. Happy Fall!
Happy fall friend :) Feels good to have our friends so close by !
I just wanted to say thank you for sharing
The Gate is a great idea. I put a No Trespassing sign on mine. So many homesteaders now have pee pews so it is a real deterrent for uninvited guests !! Get ya 4-5 chickens, a Rooster and 2 Turkey Hens and A Gobbler. That way they can breed. Get a couple of Silkie Hens as they always go broody and make great incubators. I have ducks too - very sustainable. My Runner Ducks lay eggs year round with an occasional Moult. I have one Doe goat and one Buck that usually breed in October and kid in March. They are mini Nubians - no so small - but after the kids are 8 weeks old, we sell em and I start hand milking. We are in the woods of N Central FL in a cabin. Only 2 acres - moved here 8 years ago at ages 56 & 57 - designed this small cypress log cabin - but not off grid. Yet -as we all may be off grid when the SH*T hits the fan. Watch out for bears and other predators. And watch out for those few bad people. Wishing you all the best!!
Pro tip...get a spud bar when digging like that....poke then dig and bail....just SO much easier!
What the heck is there to be negative about on your channel??? I think you guys are great! Keep shrugging off negative comments.❤
Gate looks great. Look forward to more videos.
You should have painted the back splash area black to hide all the seams.
I really enjoy watching you.I wish you all the best.
Great video guys looking to travel very soon!
Thank you so much and ah so exciting!!!
I Love your channel ❣️. Keep up the great work!!! East TN is so much prettier than where I live in west TN.
Thanks so much Vickie! One thing I have learned from traveling is see the beauty where you are. It makes life so much better :) See you next week!
Great job to you both nothing better than the satisfaction making something with your own hands. Now that you have friends I am sure you'll be working on a big community garden in the spring. Love watching all progress. Coming from Cape Cod
Great choice on the gate.
Good stuff!
Thanks! We are cruising right along here at the Runaway Ranch haha
Ignore the negative and think of things that are hopeful, beautiful and inspirational. This life you’re building together is a wonderful blessing! Thank you for sharing your skills, your process and your tips. You’ve no idea how much all of your efforts help others seeking similar paths.
Great scenery around your place. Loved the drone shot of the forest including the horizon off in the distance.
Have a good Thanksgiving
You too!
Awesome video the gate is awesome happy thanksgiving god bless both of you more videos thank you
Have a beautiful holiday! Enjoy and we will see you on the next one!
Great video Matt and Cass
Love From Chile SA ,You Young Fokes are the Future of the World.
Looking great!
Later you might want to put an automatic gate opener on your gate. Try purchasing one called " The Mule " . The cost is just a little more but you will not have to change it once or twice a year like cheaper ones. Also silicon all plastic areas make use it have a drain place for water even if you have to drill a hole in the bottom area so water can get out. It doesn't take much money to add a small battery and solar panel to power the gate.
Ah to be young again. I’m 64.5, but getting ready to at least semi retire. Still reasonably healthy. And getting ready to down size, and simplify. Can’t wait to start my big adventure too. Love you guys. Your attitude is infectious.
You guys are awesome!!!!
I have recently started following you two; such a fresh perspective from a young couple living off the land! Happy Thanksgiving 🍁🍂❤️
Love you guys 🇯🇲💯
Whiskey diesel put up trail cans and caught a neighbor with sticky fingers. It would be a nice extra step to hide one looking at the gate.
This video came into my recommendation and I watched it and I loved it. 😍
I've been following you guys for awhile now and good to see your progress. Working towards the same thing and still looking for land myself.
Awesome job and video God Bless you and your family
I have a static home in the 🇬🇧 I hated how the fridge freezer looked.so white against everything else. So i painted it with frenchic paint. It looked amazing and has lasted for 4 years , and it still looks great. In caravans, everything is paint able 😊
Hello!' IM loving your back splash. The color is hip.The gate looks real nice. Good job. But most of all have a Happy Thanksgiving😊
My wife and I have been enjoying your journey with your property (the ups and downs). It is a learning experience. You have provided us with some knowledge of things we hadn't even thought ot (or we would've made the same mistakes). Thanks for your sharing attitude. We love you both, and am SO glad that you are pioneering in Tennessee (and on RUclips). You'll always get haters, but know that there are more people rooting for you, than those who aren't.
Thank you so much.
Nothing but LOVE from me! I enjoy your content and I'm still pissed about the tiny house issue, that whole thing was heartbreaking to say the less... Happy Thanksgiving Matt & Cass!
Have a beautiful holiday friend! Eat and be Merry :) See you on the next one!
WELCOME TO YOUR FRIENDS CONGRATS ON YOUR GATE HAPPY THANKSGIVING❤
Happy Thanksgiving-remember every step is a step.
Such good advice! Sooo much to always do it is good to take a step back and appreciate it all!
Look at you girls work!!!
Nice work....on everything! love the video thank you
Happy Thanksgiving! The place is looking good!
Just came across your channel look forward to watching you guys fix and build your homestead good luck. I lived with in Tellico Plains Tennessee for eight years with my ex. Tennessee is a beautiful place to live.
It would be interesting if you took a break from the current format and did a dedicated "sit down" Vid on "Mindset" - we don't talk about that much in the community. Josh and Carolyn at Homesteading Family have done two videos, and City Prepping touched slightly on it in his video on Hope the other day. He also pointed out that we don't talk about Mental Health in the community. I do think this time of the year, is a time for reflection, where we have been?, where we are now?, and well where is this going?? Looking back over notes, and plans, etc.. and laying new groundwork towards upcoming projects. But it all comes down to - MINDSET and I too have my moments - where I need to wrap my head around things that lay some what questionable before me. BTW - I am in Bama south of you, and likely west of you as well. Off in my own little world. It is just me, and the chickens. We are doing our best at the moment. Oh and you need chickens - just my two cents.
I am looking at the OUPES line, but just finished my solar for now with 800 watts - into a 3072 WH battery that feeds my 1000w (2400wh Sol gen) and all is well so far temperatures will be a real issue. from 120 F to 14 F range. This will be interesting to manage as the weight of this stuff, means it can not be moved. Would love to have the OUPES 5K at some point. It will be interesting to see your Diesel Heat Video, but the price of Diesel really does not put it high on my list of potentials.
The property is looking great 🤙
Thank you :) One step at a time!
You guys are doing a great job keep doing what you are doing. I really love watching your videos ❤
Love love love the Moab Brewery!!! Lived in Moab for 3.5 months about seven years ago. Was in there quite a bit 😃. Nice to have beautiful friends and neighbors. Progress is awesome! Happy Thanksgiving 🦃. 🐾🙏🏻✌🏻 Slàinte Mhath 🥃
YESS! We love that little brewery :) Progress is little by little but it feels damn good! Have a great holiday
@@RunawayMattCass thank you.
Both of you are classy !! HAPPY THANKSGIVING
Love the green backsplash!!
Craigslist Detroit I was just calling here if we still have everything is going to be safe have a good year
It’s my new favorite program .
Happy Thanksgiving to you both❤🦃🍗🙂
You are so inspirational and I love your videos .
Haters are actually your biggest fans ! They help your channel grow. Keep putting out your content. Love ❤️, peace and happiness 😊
Great videos guy's.
Looks just like my gate! I use a SpeeCo Genuine Two Way Lockable Gate Latch with a lock . It was low cost and shuts very easy and convenient.
It is not my intention to add to your "to do" list but think about developing a trail around your property so you can get out and take a break from the work. We only have 9 acres of wooded property but I have a 1/2 mile trail cut out that goes from corner to corner. When the projects get over whelming or you just need a break, it is a nice little walk. Your friends can have a trail on their property and they can be joined for a longer trail!
Awesome job, good work.
