- In this short Scuba 101 video, Jonathan explains the basics of what a rebreather is, and how it basically works.
In the SCUBA 101 series, Jonathan (and sometimes Todd) discuss the technology, physiology and equipment of scuba diving. These videos are designed for entertainment purposes only. They should not be considered a replacement or substitute for professional scuba training.

I don't usually comment on these things, but fill like in this case a commendation is more than warranted: straight to the point, clear explanation with visual cues, not wasting anyone's time with overtaking or tangent topics, just efficiently delivering the message. THANK YOU!
Glad you enjoyed and thanks for commenting!
This is the best explanation on a rebreather on RUclips by far,
“Beneath the Blue HQ” or “Below the Blue HQ” has a nice ring to it!
I think your onto something special but I simply really like just “Blue HQ” or even “HQ Blue”.. it’s catchy, easy, and fun..good job Chloe😊
Jonathan's Deep Blue Loveshak?
Great explanation - I'll probably recommend it in the future. The physical props really help a lot.
My favourite rebreather explanation video has been the one by Richard Harris (the Thai cave rescue guy) and he starts super simple and slowly moves into more in-depth than most explanations.
Even if you know how a rebreather works already you'll probably learn something from that one.
I like that one too. He says "imagine you are breathing into a bag." And I'm thinking...you know...a bag is a pretty easy prop to come up with....
“Please don’t build this and go into your swimming pool…. You will drown” 😂😂😂
“Think tank” very educational channel.
I like that!!
This is a great video. The incremental approach is the key here: facing a problem->solving it. Many Thanks!
Thanks!
Name it “BLUEBASE!!!” Have fun!!!
Brilliant explanation, well illustrated and easy to understand for folks that are only vaguely familiar with ccr. Greatly appreciated this video
Love the videos Jonathan!
Excellent video. Straight to the point and with great props to explain what a rebreather really is.
-LMAO 🤣 Busted Out Laughing @ 9:50 …Yeah, I Imagine You Will.
I think I learned more from this video than any thing else I’ve ever watched on RUclips… _You’re a good teacher_
Thanks!
Magnificent explanation!!
Thanks....more detail in the next video.
This is completely brilliant!
Thanks!
The Blue World Birdhouse!
Thanks for sharing this information
Thanks for this introduction. Looking forward to more on this subject.
I follow DiveTalk but haven't seen a video that explains this on an introduction level.
We are going to progress slowly. We have several more coming.
Exactly like what we use in veterinary anaesthesia. Nicely explained xxx
Excellent. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Nice vid as always!!!
Brilliant video Jonathan!!!
My favorite so far is Blue HQ!
Thanks for the intel
Thank you.. Explanation is sooo good.
You are welcome!
great explanation! Thanks 🙂
Jonathan, thank you for this fun and informative video. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@BlueWorldplus as a non-diver, I love this kind of educational stuff.
Great explanation!
Your explanation is concise and to the point!👍
I appreciate that!
Great explanation with illustration of what a rebreather is! I keep hearing the term if watching cave divers' videos and didn't quite know. It's something I would be keen to learn as I gain more dives.
I learn something new! Thank you Jonathan for the wonderful videos.
Glad you like them!
Johnathan Bird's Deep Lablueatory!
Appreciate the disclaimer 👌
🤣
Nice one, great simple introduction on how rebreathers work, there's really no clear video around on that. Looking forward more in depth videos on the subject
More to come.
Excellent video on rebreathers. I look forward to the continued series. Also looking forward to meeting and listening to you in Cozumel.
And I have to agree with the comment below... SEABASE.... very Conshelf/Sealab-ish. 🙂
Thanks for these introduction 💪 greetings from Argentina 🤗💕
Just name it "Rock bottom" 😂
well done
This explanation was awesome! You got straight to the point, didn’t try to make yourself sound like a Harvard graduate, and made the content easy to absorb.
That's my modus operandi!
I can't stand that. I'll look up quick gaming answers on RUclips that should take no more than 30 seconds, but every video that pops up is close to 10 minutes.
Brave Blue World Lab
In the spirit of KISS, Keep It Stupid Simple: Blue Base.
Which abbreviated is BB, and I don't mind spending a night in an underwater bed and breakfast 🤪
That was a wonderfully simple explanation of how a rebreather works! The props make it easy to visualize and understand. Thanks! 😁 Oh - and Blue Habitat or Blue World Habitat. 🤙
Glad it was helpful!
Blue Lab!!
I have a rebreather just like yours at home. Me and my friends love using it when taking some funny stuff.
🤣 No that's a bong!! LOL!
Base Blue!

The Blue Base!
2009 was the first introduction to rebreather, ccr course AP Inspiration, Previously I had dived double12L and double18L hogarthian setup. When you can't use your lungs for lift control Silence, gone were the sounds of the open circuit regulator. Bottles fillings "cheapness" compared to 12L or 18L douples using trimix.
No question that a rebreather starts to make a lot of sense with trimix!
i dont know nothing about diving but oxygen is important to us well explained
This is a very cool demonstration, thank you very much, Jonathan. Hope, you'll go into details, because I am interested in getting one. By the way, why did you pick this particular one? Did you check other models? Thanks
Your rebreather should be based on the type of diving you do. If you are in cold deep water off a rocking boat it would be different than a shallow warm water reef dive.
Very informative, thank you!
Also name suggestion: Bluelab 2023
Cartoon reference in there lol.
Name it "Blue Videos compilation "
Very well explained..never knew body did not use all the oxygen it takes in each breath.
The Bird house!
I’d love to learn how to use a rebreather. It’s such a mind blowing piece of tech. Too bad they are crazy expensive. As for the name might I suggest the SeaNest?
The "Blue Screen Room"
Hope we will have more rescue stores from edd on this channel.
There’s a Seabase i know of and it’s this diving center down in the Florida keys for Boy Scouts and it’s incredible. I went there when I was a senior in high school and it got me hooked on diving for life! I believe the full name is Florida Seabase.

Hey Johnathan! Wonder if you still use your Kraken double hose? I’m in the market and heard Bryan, from VDHose passed last year and no longer in production sadly. I’m hoping to find a regulator somewhere out there one day. Thanks for all the videos and love the “plus”Channel.
Email me and I can direct you to someone who can help.
@@BlueWorldplus thank you! I’ll find your email on your website
@blueworld_plus And you should call it Base- Ment built by NOAA… haha
I sent the email, wondering if it was received. I’m out on the boat and service is spotty.

I was very confused about The pop bottle used as a “scrubber” - until you mentioned, possibly for The 2nd or 3rd Time ! That there wasn’t any scrubbling material actually in it ( ! ? )
Great video very informative. How much of an advantage does a rebreather give you over open circuit? How many more extra minutes will the diver get ?
hours
Very interesting guys, thanks.
We will be covering that in the next episode!! Stay tuned!
@@BlueWorldplus You're undersea lab should be called " the blue dolphin".
How often do you have to replace the scrubber kitty litter?
As a rule of thumb....a pound of scrubber material lasts about an hour. So, a rebreather with a scubber canister that holds three pounds can go three hours, then you replace the material. Those numbers are kind of worst case though...a big guy working hard makes more CO2 than a small guy not working that hard. Real world tests have shown that the average diver gets more like 90 minutes per pound, but it varies from person to person.

Blue World Station
Has anyone suggested you call your HQ Blue waffle? I'm gonna be that guy.
You remind me of Robin Williams, thank you
Think tank
fantastic. on average how much does a rebreather extend your time underwater?
In most cases it is based on the amount of CO2 absorbent in the canisters. Most run a minimum of 4 hours.
We are going to do a follow up video to talk about that! I have four videos planned on "rebreather basics." And I think getting Mike Young to talk about rebreather design, would be awesome!
Thought of a name idea: The Bluebird or The Blue Bird.
Jonathan’s: Bluedome, blue-habitat, Aqualab,
Bird Nest
The blue room? 😅 nice video and very easy to pick up
Thanks! 😃
Deep blue world
Blue screen. :)
Jonathan you can come to the KISS factory to shoot your in depth version. I have lots of proper props!!!
OOOOh! Now that sounds fun!!! We will definitely come down!

How deep can you use a rebreather before you need a different breathe gas mixture?
Well, that depends on many factors, but as a general rule, its the same as open circuit. With more depth comes complications from too much nitrogen.
Are the hoses ribbed on the inside?
Yes. The good part of that is that they can trap small amounts of water, the bad part is that its hard to get them dry later!
Blue Lab
Can we talk to Noah about how the light rays on the background don't make any sense? :D
Deep blue base
Is there no scrubber that only scrubs the Carbon instead of CO2?
There is no carbon in there!
@@BlueWorldplus CO2. CARBONdioxide. Remove CARBON, you get O2 aka oxygen. That's what i meant.
Noah's blue world Ark
Blue Ark= Bark!
When is your next dolphin episode?
Soon!!
Will i ever scuba dive, probably not.
Will i ever cave dive or deep dive, no.
Will i ever use a rebreather, no.
Will i watch this entire video and enjoy it, yes.

Blue Shark Tank??? Bakana, my sharky, says shark should be in it somewhere...
Interesting seeing the chemical note about the sorb too. Looks quite basic (alkaline, not simple), which makes sense as CO2 dissolved is mildly acidic. Plus used sorb might make baking powder... (do not touch that stuff with your bare hands btw because NaOH in solid form is very ouch!!!)
Back in the day, I had a friend who spread the used sorb on his lawn once a year. If you have acidic soil, it's just the thing.
Why did several of the diving depth record holders use standard scuba gear instead of a rebreather? Wouldn't their task be way easier with a rebreather?
There are advantages and disadvantages of both.
